Abstract:Process design and control are closely related to each other in chemical engineering activities. Traditionally, process design and control system design are carried out in sequence. However, the integration of process design and control (IPDC) can bring greater economic benefits and process dynamic performance than traditional sequential design methods. This is true, particularly for modern chemical processes, in which various process units become more interacting and compact owing to the widespread use of heat integration and recycled streams, and the resulted impacts between process design and control begin to significantly influence both the capital and operational costs. Recently, considerable studies about the IPDC for chemical processes have been reported in published literature. The purpose of the paper is to survey the applications of optimization-based integrating process design and control for chemical processes. Firstly, attention has been focused on the applications of IPDC to different process units, for example, chemical reactors and separation columns. Then, the survey is extended to the applications of IPDC to plant-wide chemical processes. Finally, the future research challenges in the application of IPDC to chemical processes have been briefly discussed.

Abstract:Advanced manufacturing uses emerging technologies to critically enhance not only the economic competitiveness of individual manufacturers but also the sustainability of the whole industrial sector. New materials and technologies require new manufacturing processes and novel analytical models for process controls and parameter optimization regarding cost, reliability, quality, product flexibility, energy consumption, and fossil carbon emissions. The successful adoption of advanced manufacturing for sustainability can only be realized by following a systematic approach from concept development, product design and manufacturing to product delivery and service as well as in forward and reverse supply chain management. This special volume reports on progress of advanced manufacturing on sustainability improvements along the whole life cycle and covers the six themes: 1. Design theory and methodology for sustainability with advanced manufacturing; 2. Energy efficiency assessment and control of mechanical manufacturing systems; 3. Parameter optimization for advanced manufacturing and remanufacturing; 4. Low fossil-carbon process planning and production scheduling; 5. Integration of supply-chain innovations and advanced manufacturing; 6. Sustainable innovation for product-service systems. In addition, this SV introductory article, highlights future research directions, such as the need for energy consumption and emission data for advanced manufacturing processes, optimization models and control schemes, supply chain innovations, and product-service integration.

Abstract:This Virtual Special Issue (VSI) was proposed on par with the fascinating and exponentially growing development of smart enabling technologies, such as Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical System (CPS), Cloud Computing (CC), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data Analytics (BDA), Digital Twin (DT), etc, which have greatly advanced the development of sustainable smart manufacturing throughout the lifecycle. The VSI addressed issues that were not properly or even incorrectly addressed in the existing literature. The authors of this VSI sought to introduce new knowledge and debates to lead the research directions to new paths. The editorial team invited well-established researchers in this area and received about 40 highly qualified submissions, out of which 12 were accepted after standard peer-review procedure of the Journal of Cleaner Production, which covered the three main themes defined in the “Call-for-Papers”. The contributing authors were from Brazil, China, Finland, Pakistan, Sweden, USA (in alphabetical order). The coordinators of this VSI are confident that the contents of this VSI will advance the science of digitalisation and will help society to make real progress towards sustainable societies.

Abstract:The central theme of this Special Issue is emerging opportunities and future directions in automation for green manufacturing, where information technology based modeling, analysis, control and optimization are the focus areas. The purpose is to show the state-of-the-art research and applications in the general area of automation in green manufacturing, by bringing together researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry, to address the significant advancement, expose the unsolved challenges, present the critical needs for integration with new technologies, and provide visions for future research and development. This Special Issue presents original, significant and visionary automation papers describing scientific models, methods and technologies with both solid theoretical development and practical importance that improve process, efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability in green manufacturing. The contributions in this Special Issue can be divided into the following categories in green manufacturing: renewable energy products and systems; energy savings in manufacturing processes and systems; remanufacturing system design; and emission reduction in supply chain management. Specifically, the following papers are included in this Special Issue. The first category addresses renewable energy source, which includes manufacturing and operation of alternative energy products, such as batteries for electric vehicles, and system design to support manufacturing activities using renewable energy sources, such as electricity generated by wind turbines and solar panels. The second category focuses on energy savings in manufacturing, such as operational control and robot scheduling to minimize energy consumptions in production, optimal design of facility and production to reduce energy cost. The third category extends the study to remanufacturing, which plays a significant role to achieve sustainability and multiple life cycles. This includes remanufac- uring system analysis, design and optimization, such as strategies for recycling, reassembly, etc. Finally, the last category considers supply chain management, within which multiple firms work together to reduce negative environmental impact.

Abstract:Nowadays, issues on population, environment and resource have become the world’s attentive focus. Sustainable development has been widely accepted around the world. As one of the biggest waste generator and resources consumer, manufacturing industry is facing more challenges as well as opportunities. In order to reduce both resource consuming and waste discharging effectively, traditionally manufacturing mode should be improved. Newly emerged creative technologies and strategies, including green design, green manufacturing and cleaner production, are regarded as the radical resolvent for current environment and resource issues and they will be the only way in the future that manufacturing will evolve. In this paper, a serial of research on green design/manufacturing and cleaner product theoretically and practically was presented. These creative technology and strategy will give strong support to ‘green’ the whole electromechanical designing and manufacturing processes.

Abstract:Sustainable chemistry for renewable energy generation and green synthesis is a timely research topic with the vision to provide present needs without compromising future generations. In the era of Industry 4.0, sustainable chemistry and process are undergoing a drastic transformation from continuous flow system toward the next level of operations, such as cooperating and coordinating machine, self-decision-making system, autonomous and automatic problem solver by integrating artificial intelligence, data and hardware in the cyber-physical systems. Due to the lack of convergence between the physical and cyber spaces, the open-loop systems are facing challenges such as data isolation, slow cycle time, and insufficient resources management. Emerging researches have been devoted to accelerating these cycles, reducing the time between multistep processes and real-time characterization via additive manufacturing, in-/on-line monitoring, and artificial intelligence. The final goal is to concurrently propose process recipes, flow synthesis, and molecules characterization in sustainable chemical processes, with each step transmitting and receiving data simultaneously. This process is known as ‘closing the loop’, which will potentially create a future lab with highly integrated systems, and generate a service-orientated platform for end-to-end synchronization and self-evolving, inverse molecular design, and automatic science discovery. This perspective provides a methodical approach for understanding cyber and physical systems individually, enabled by artificial intelligence and additive manufacturing, respectively, in combination with in-/on-line monitoring. Moreover, the future perspective and key challenges for the development of the closed-loop system in sustainable chemistry and process are discussed.

Abstract:Economic growth and the development of global markets have been coupled with energy use, which have caused an increase in global energy demand and created pressure on the supply of energy resources. This special volume section reports advances being made towards sustainable cleaner production and sustainable energy options. The section presents a selection of papers that show leading examples of the application of sustainable management, green production, and renewable energy. An overview framework is proposed to categorise the papers and to show key actors, factors and technologies for resource efficiency, cleaner production and sustainable energy. The themes covered by the papers include drivers of such sustainable practices. Five of these papers focus on the role of technology, regulatory framework, and customers' efforts in fostering the development and adoption of greener technologies. Another group of seven papers gives examples of on how to use green chemistry and cleaner energy sources such as biomass to foster transition to sustainable production. The last paper addresses the effect of environmental practices on firm's performance. The special volume section highlights the importance of multidisciplinary approaches that integrate social and technological perspectives to solve current sustainability problems and to promote the development of sustainable energy and sustainable production.

Abstract:Machine tools as indispensable tools for manufacturing products are typical high-energy, high-carbon manufacturing systems due to their larger mass, longer life cycles and huge resources and energy consumption. The current research trend of sustainable machine tools aims to reduce cost, energy consumption and increase sustainability without compromising their functionality, usability, productivity, accuracy, etc. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews about what are the key technologies for sustainable machine tools design. Thus, a comprehensive literature review of machine tool design for sustainability is needed in order to make clear how to design and evaluate sustainable machine tools from the viewpoint of life cycle sustainability analysis. The aim of this paper is to review the sustainable design and assessment aspects of machine tool design from partial goals to integrated aims according to whole sustainability dimensions such as the environment, economy and society, as well as involving key techniques in different life cycle stages. Recent research and study on improving directly or indirectly sustainability performance of machine tools according to focus points could be summarized as: design optimization of components such as lightweight using topology and bionic methods; structure design with modular design and layout; reducing cutting fluids and lubricant oil by employing minimum quantity lubrication, dry and cryogenic machining; reducing energy consumption; waste reduction by reusing, remanufacturing and recycling; sustainability assessment i.e., energy model, life cycle cost and life cycle social benefit. This paper assists designers and manufacturers to improve sustainability of machine tools by specific optimization measures in their activities.

Abstract:Significant progress in the area of simultaneous design and control for chemical processes has been achieved and various methodologies have been put forward to address this issue over the last several decades. These methods can be classified in two categories (1) controllability indicator-based frameworks that are capable of screening alternative designs, and (2) optimization-based frameworks that integrate the process design and control system design. The major objective is to give an up-to-date review of the state-of-the-art and progress in the challenging area of optimization-based simultaneous design and control. First, motivations and significances of simultaneous design and control are illustrated. Second, a general classification of existing methodologies of optimization-based simultaneous design and control is outlined. Subsequently, the mathematical formulations and relevant theoretical solution algorithms, their merits, strengths and shortcomings are highlighted. Last, based on the recent advances in this field, challenges and future research directions are discussed briefly. An attempt is made with the help of this review article to stimulate further research and disseminate the simultaneous design methods to challenging problem areas. In particular, the application of optimization-based simultaneous design and control methods to large-scale systems with highly inherent nonlinear dynamics often the case in industrial chemical processes remains a challenging task and yet to be solved.
