Abstract:Rationale The double-spike technique is widely used in stable metal isotope measurements to correct for instrumental fractionation, and this method has achieved prominence for chromium (Cr) isotope measurements in the past decade or so. For this method to work, precise calibration of the double spike was thought to be indispensable. However, the effect of carrying out this precise calibration has not been fully evaluated. Moreover, other factors that can affect the accuracy of Cr isotope measurements using the double spike have also not been thoroughly evaluated. Methods First using theoretical calculation, we assessed whether precise knowledge of the measured mass fractionation of the double spike is necessary. We then developed a double-spike method for measuring the Cr stable isotopic composition using multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). We tested the key factors that can affect the accuracy of Cr isotope measurements. Results By theoretical calculation we found that the uncorrected instrumental mass fractionation of the double spike will not result in any systematic bias on the measurements of delta Cr-53 values in the sample, provided that the double spike, standard and sample are measured on the same instrument and with the same cup configuration. Incorporating this result, with our new method, the presence of Fe and Ti (up to 5% wt of the Cr concentration in the sample) can be fully corrected. The long-term reproducibility of an internal standard was +/- 0.04 parts per thousand (2SD), and the external reproducibility on the delta Cr-53 difference between our internal standard and the NIST Standard Reference Material 3112a was -0.07 +/- 0.05 parts per thousand. The delta Cr-53 values for a set of USGS geological reference materials including basalt (BHVO-1,2; BIR-1; GSR-3), mica schist (SDC-1), diabase (W-2-a), peridotite (PCC-1) and dunite (DTS-2) were measured, with our results for BHVO-2 and BIR-1 being consistent with previously reported values. Conclusions We have shown that precise knowledge of the measured mass fractionation of the double spike is not necessary during spike calibration and thus the calibration procedure is simplified. We can apply our new Cr isotope method to a range of geological rock samples with a wide range of variation in the chemical composition.

Abstract:The precise determination of Cd isotope ratios via multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) has made the widespread application of Cd isotopes possible. However, previous studies are complicated by the chemical purification method and molecular interferences from Zn (e.g.(ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-36, (ZnAr+)-Zn-68-Ar-38, and (ZnAr+)-Zn-66-Ar-40 on Cd-106(+), (ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-38 and (ZnAr+)-Zn-68-Ar-40 on Cd-108(+), (ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-40 on Cd-110(+)). Separation of Zn from Cd requires the usage of a toxic reagent (HBr) and is also complicated by the relatively high procedural Zn blank especially when only a very small amount of Cd is available. Here we present a high-precision Cd isotope measurement method using double spike MC-ICP-MS, which avoids the molecular interferences from Zn introduced by both sample and chemical purification. A Cd-111-Cd-113 double spike pair optimized for the Cd-111, Cd-112, Cd-113, and Cd-114 inversion was used to correct for the mass bias. Elemental doping experiments suggest that the measured Cd isotope data were not significantly affected when the measured solution has, Zn/Cd < 10(3), Pd/Cd < 10(2), Fe/Cd < 10(-2), In/Cd < 10(-3), Sn/Cd < 10(-1), Zr/Cd < 10(-2), Nb/Cd < 10(-1), Mo/Cd < 10(-2), Ru/Cd < 10(-2), Ga/Cd < 10(-2), Ge/Cd < 10(-2), Se/Cd < 10(-1), and As/Cd < 10(-1). We thus modified the chemical purification method by removing the HBr step and eluting Zn and Cd together. The minimum requirement of sample size for precise measurement of stable Cd isotope ratios was tested to be as low as 10 ng. The measurements of pure Cd solutions (BAM I012 Cd and HPS Cd) give a long-term intermediate precision for delta Cd-114/110 relative to NIST SRM 3108 of 0.05 parts per thousand. We further validated our method by measuring different reference materials covering a relatively wide range of Zn/Cd (similar to 9 to 1239), the results of which agree within uncertainty with previous studies. Our study thus provides an efficient and precise way to determine stable Cd isotope ratios of geological samples with relatively low Cd concentrations.
Measurement of zinc stable isotope ratios in biogeochemical matrices by double-spike MC-ICPMS and determination of the isotope ratio pool available for plants from soil

Abstract:Analysis of naturally occurring isotopic variations is a promising tool for investigating Zn transport and cycling in geological and biological settings. Here, we present the recently installed double-spike (DS) technique at the MAGIC laboratories at Imperial College London. The procedure improves on previous published DS methods in terms of ease of measurement and precisions obtained. The analytical method involves addition of a 64Zn–67Zn double-spike to the samples prior to digestion, separation of Zn from the sample matrix by ion exchange chromatography, and isotopic analysis by multiple-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method were validated by analyses of several in-house and international elemental reference materials. Multiple analyses of pure Zn standard solutions consistently yielded a reproducibility of about ±0.05‰ (2 SD) for δ66Zn, and comparable precisions were obtained for analyses of geological and biological materials. Highly fractionated Zn standards analyzed by DS and standard sample bracketing yield slightly varying results, which probably originate from repetitive fractionation events during manufacture of the standards. However, the δ66Zn values (all reported relative to JMC Lyon Zn) for two less fractionated in-house Zn standard solutions, Imperial Zn (0.10 ± 0.08‰: 2 SD) and London Zn (0.08 ± 0.04‰), are within uncertainties to data reported with different mass spectrometric techniques and instruments. Two standard reference materials, blend ore BCR 027 and ryegrass BCR 281, were also measured, and the δ66Zn were found to be 0.25 ± 0.06‰ (2 SD) and 0.40 ± 0.09‰, respectively. Taken together, these standard measurements ascertain that the double-spike methodology is suitable for accurate and precise Zn isotope analyses of a wide range of natural samples. The newly installed technique was consequently applied to soil samples and soil leachates to investigate the isotopic signature of plant available Zn. High‐Precision Measurement of Stable Cr Isotopes in Geological Reference Materials by a Double‐Spike TIMS Method

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) isotopes have been widely used in various fields of Earth and planetary sciences. However, high‐precision measurements of Cr stable isotope ratios are still challenged by difficulties in purifying Cr and organic matter interference from resin using double‐spike thermal ionisation mass spectrometry. In this study, an improved and easily operated two‐column chemical separation procedure using AG50W‐X12 (200–400 mesh) resin is introduced. This resin has a higher cross‐linking density than AG50W‐X8, and this higher density generates better separation efficiency and higher saturation. Organic matter from the resin is a common cause of inhibition of the emission of Cr during analysis by TIMS. Here, perchloric and nitric acids were utilised to eliminate organic matter interference. The Cr isotope ratios of samples with lower Cr contents could be measured precisely by TIMS. The long‐term intermediate measurement precision of δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 for BHVO‐2 is better than ± 0.031‰ (2s) over one year. Replicated digestions and measurements of geological reference materials (OKUM, MUH‐1, JP‐1, BHVO‐1, BHVO‐2, AGV‐2 and GSP‐2) yield δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 results ranging from −0.129‰ to −0.032‰. The Cr isotope ratios of geological reference materials are consistent with the δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 values reported by previous studies, and the measurement uncertainty (± 0.031‰, 2s) is significantly improved.
High-precision, mass dependent Si isotope measurements via the critical mixture double-spiking technique

Abstract:We have developed a new method for measuring mass dependent Si isotope fractionation via critical mixture double-spiking. Samples are required to be spiked before column chemistry to guarantee full equilibrium between sample and double-spike (29Si-30Si spike). An iterative addition of the double-spike to the sample, usually 2-4 times, is needed to generate a solution very close to the critically spiked mixture. We use a double-pass cyclonic quartz spray chamber, as it gives the highest signal-to-noise. In conjunction with 6 μg/ml Si solution to yield intense Si isotope beams, this setup results in ~25 V (with 1011 resistor) signal on 28Si+, while on-peak noise is less than 0.06 V. In a typical sample analysis of eight repeat measurements, the 2s.e. of the mean is approximately ±0.030‰ (δ30/28Si), consuming about 13 μg Si in total. Over a 16 month period the reproducibility of this mean value is ±0.030‰ (2s.d., δ30/28Si), which is 2 to 8 times better than the long-term reproducibility of traditional Si isotope measurement methods (~ ±0.1‰,2s.d., δ30/28Si). This agreement between the short term and long-term statistics illustrate that the data sample the same population over the short and long terms, i.e., there is no scatter on timescale of 16 months additional to that we observe over twenty hours (the typical timescale in one analytical session). Thus, for any set of n repeats, including n > 8, their 2s.e. should prove a useful metric of the reproducibility of their mean. Three international geological reference materials and a Si isotope reference material, diatomite, were characterised via the critical mixture double-spiking technique. Our results for BHVO-2 (−0.276±0.011‰, 2s.e., n = 94, δ30/28Si), BIR-1 (−0.321±0.025‰, 2s.e., n = 27), JP-1 (−0.273±0.030‰, 2s.e., n = 19) and diatomite (1.244±0.025‰, 2s.e., n = 20) are consistent with literature data but much more precise.

Abstract:Absolute isotopic ratios are required for isobaric interference corrections, spike calibrations, and isotopic analysis by external normalization methods. However, high-precision natural isotopic abundance data are lacking for many elements, particularly those with less than four isotopes or having isobaric isotopes with other elements. In this study, we developed a method for absolute isotope ratio analysis, which integrates the concept of the double-spike method with isotopic analysis of element pairs that have isobaric isotopes. Using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), the isotopic composition of a sample can be derived by measuring a series of mixtures of the sample and a spike element that has an isobaric isotope with the element being analyzed. We applied this method to five pairs of elements (Ca-Ti, V-Ti, Cr-Ti, Ni-Zn, and In-Sn) and obtained the absolute isotopic ratios for Ca, V, Cr, Ni, and In, as well as the relative Ca isotopic composition. By simultaneous measurement of Ti and Ca isotopes, a quantitative relationship between the instrumental mass fractionation factors and element masses was developed. After correcting for the difference in instrumental mass fractionation factors, the obtained absolute ratios agree well with the literature data and have per mil level accuracy. This method has considerable potential in measuring the absolute isotopic ratios of elements that have isobaric isotope with other elements. Such precisely determined absolute isotopic ratios and the relationship between the instrumental mass fractionation factors and elemental masses will improve isobaric interference corrections, particularly when chemical purification is imperfect or during laser ablation analysis.
High-precision stable isotope measurements of tungsten and molybdenum in single sample aliquots combined with optimized separation for mixed double spikes

Abstract:A key driver to develop stable tungsten (W) isotope geochemistry is its unique relationship with molybdenum (Mo). Here, we establish a combined double-spike (DS) methods for W (180W-184W spike) and Mo (97Mo-100Mo spike) to perform simple, efficient, and robust isotope measurements of these two chemically analogous elements in single sample aliquots. Based on the previous column chemistry, we optimized two-stage anion-exchange procedures to remove matrix elements, particularly the critical interferences of Ta and Hf on 180W, and to collect sharply separated W and Mo fractions. The obtained recoveries are quantitative for both elements, and their purities are sufficiently high to achieve high-precision measurements comparable to previous DS measurements of individual elements. The reproducibility of our isotope measurements for in-house standard solutions (2SD) were ±0.02‰ for δ186W and ±0.03‰ for δ98Mo. We applied our method to 27 geological reference materials including 10 igneous rocks (AGV-2, JA-3, JR-1, JB-1, JB-1a, JB-2, JB-3, W-2a, TDB-1, WGB-1), 9 sediments (Nod-A-1, Nod-P-1, JMn-1; JMS-1, JMS-2, CRM7302-a, HISS-1, MESS-4, PAC-3), and 8 sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks (SDC-1, SDO-1, SBC-1, SCO-1, SCO-2; JSL-1, JSL-2, IOC-1) to produce a comprehensive data set. The data set confirmed the accuracy of our measurements and expands the reference materials available for interlaboratory comparisons of δ186W and δ98Mo. The data set also indicates potential pitfalls in sample preparations for particular sample types, and shows several variations of W and Mo isotopes possibly related to low-/high-temperature geochemical processes. Our new method, plus the reference data set, will facilitate the development of stable isotope geochemistry for W and Mo.

Abstract:This study presents high-precision W isotopic measurement results using the W-180-W-183 double spike technique with MC-ICP-MS. The effects of isobaric and polyatomic interferences on W isotopic measurements were evaluated. The delta W-186/184 values were not significantly affected when the solution had Hf/W <= 3 x 10(-4), Ta/W <= 1, Os/W <= 0.06, Ce/W <= 0.0075, Nd/W <= 3.5 and Sm/W <= 5. The intermediate measurement precisions of both standard solutions (NIST SRM 3163 and Alfa Aesar W) and geological reference materials (NOD-A-1) were better than +/- 0.024 parts per thousand (2s). We also obtained a precision of 0.026 parts per thousand for a minimum sample loading mass of 5 ng, allowing the analysis of samples with low W contents. Replicated measurements of geological reference materials (AGV-2, BCR-2, BHVO-2, GSP-2, RGM-1, SDC-1, NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1) yielded delta W-186/184 values ranging from 0.017 parts per thousand to 0.144 parts per thousand. The delta W-186/184 values of two major tungsten ore minerals (scheelite and wolframite) were reported and compared herein. Scheelites had systematically slightly heavier W isotopic compositions than wolframites, which may reflect differences in the crystal structure. The resolvable variations of stable/mass-dependent W isotopic compositions in rocks and ore minerals make W isotopes a novel tool for studying hydrothermal mineralisation processes and the W cycle of geological reservoirs.
Double Spike-Standard Addition Technique and Its Application in Measuring Isotopes

Abstract:Double spike (DS) method has been extensively used in determining stable isotope ratios of many elements. However, challenges remain in obtaining high-precision isotope data for ultra-trace elements owing to the limitations of instrumental signal-to-noise ratios and the systematics of precision of DS-based measurements. Here, the DS-standard addition (SA) (DSSA) technique is proposed to improve measurements of isotope compositions of ultra-trace elements in natural samples. According to the U-shaped relationship between DS measurement uncertainty and the spike/sample ratio, theoretical equations and an error propagation model (EPM) were constructed comprehensively. In our method, a spiked secondary standard solution with a high, precisely known spike/sample ratio is mixed with samples such that the mixtures have spike/sample ratios within the optimal range. The abundances of the samples relative to the added standards (sample fraction; fspl) and the samples' isotope ratios can then be obtained exactly using a standard DS data reduction routine and the isotope binary mixing model. The accuracy and precision of the DSSA approach were verified by measurements of cadmium and molybdenum isotopes at as low as 5 ng levels. Compared with traditional DS measurements, the sample size for isotope analysis is reduced to 1/6-1/5 of the original with no loss of measurement precision. The optimal mixing range fspl = 0.15-0.5 is recommended. The DSSA method can be extended to isotope measurement of more than 33 elements where the DS method is applicable, especially for the ultra-trace elements such as platinum group and rare earth element isotopes.
High precision potassium isotope analysis of geological samples using MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid development of multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry（MC-ICP-MS）, the analytical precision of potassium（K） isotopes has been greatly improved, which in turn has promoted their development as potential geochemical tracers in processes involving continental weathering, crust-mantle interaction, and so on. Until now, the cumbersome and time-consuming process of sample pretreatments and the poor analytical accuracy caused by argon hydrides interference are still the biggest obstacles to the wide application of K isotopes. After completely dissolving the samples with hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid, purification of K from major matrix was performed on a customized quartz ion exchange column packed with ～2.7 mL of AG50W-X8 cation exchange resin（BioRad TM,200～400 mesh） using 0.5 mol/L HNO 3 as the eluent. This one-step procedure can effectively separate K from Li, Na, Ti, Mg, Mn, Al and Ca, except for Cr, in most of the geological samples. To find the appropriate method for high-precision stable K isotopic measurements, for minimizing the ArH + yield and improving the stability of the instrument, three methods were compared here（the high-resolution mode, high-resolution mode with continuous acquisition measurement run mode, and the low-resolution mode with a method designed to eliminate ArH + interference）. The low-resolution mode has the advantages of low cost, high stability, and high precision（long-term precision at about 0.08‰ for our laboratory）. When used to measure the K isotopic composition of a series of international geological reference materials, the results are consistent with previous values within analytical precision, indicating the reliability of this method. The K isotopic composition of a set of Chinese national rock standard materials is determined here. The measured values of K isotopes can provide a reference for the data comparison between different laboratories in future.
Optimization of analytical conditions for precise and accurate isotope analyses of Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn by MC-ICPMS

Abstract:Analytical advances in Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) over the past decade have led to rapid growth in studies utilizing non-traditional stable isotopes. There are substantial analytical challenges for achieving precise and accurate measurements of these isotopes that limit their applications in geoscience where natural isotopic variations are generally small. Here, we evaluate experimental factors that may affect the accuracy and repeatability of isotopic measurements of selected stable metal isotopes (Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) on a Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS to provide optimized analytical protocols for acquiring high quality data. Our results suggest that the repeatability level (2SD) that is readily obtainable for delta Li-7 is +/- 0.09 parts per thousand to +/- 0.24 parts per thousand, for delta Mg-26 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Fe-56 is +/- 0.05 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Cu-65 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, and for delta Zn-66 is +/- 0.02 parts per thousand to +/- 0.04 parts per thousand. Instrumental mass bias for these isotope systems can be corrected adequately using the standard-sample bracketing method but it requires that target elements are of high purity, a close match in analyte concentrations between samples and bracketing standards, and preparation of all running solutions using the same concentration of nitric acid. Overall, the Nu Plasma II is well suited for precise and accurate analyses of the isotopes studied here, and the optimal results were obtained using a 'wet' plasma operating at a normal radio-frequency (RF) power.

Abstract:Cadmium isotope analyses are applied for research in planetary, Earth, environmental and life sciences. However, there is still a lack of efficient methods for the separation of the trace element Cd from the different types of samples that are of interest for isotopic analyses. This study presents new and improved Cd separation and purification techniques for meteorite, diverse terrestrial and seawater samples prior to Cd isotope measurements by multiple collector ICP-MS using the double spike approach for mass bias correction. The first separation stage for meteorites and terrestrial samples employs an existing anion exchange chromatography method that uses AG MP-1M resin, whilst AG 1-X8 and Nobias Chelate PA-1 resins were applied for the initial isolation of Cd from small and large seawater samples, respectively. Teflon microcolumns and AG MP-1M anion exchange resin was then employed for further Cd purification of all sample types. The methods consistently isolate Cd from matrix elements more efficiently than previous protocols, whilst achieving consistently high Cd recoveries, of >95% for meteorite and terrestrial samples and >80% for seawater samples, combined with low procedural blanks of <0.08 ng. The performance of the new protocols is demonstrated by repeated Cd isotope analyses of well-characterized geological and biological reference materials, which produced data that are in excellent agreement with results that were obtained with previous, more laborious separation methods. Furthermore, precise Cd isotope compositions (δ 114 Cd) are presented for the Murchison meteorite and, for the first time, the ordinary chondrite GRO 95504. Finally, analyses of seven seawater samples, with Cd concentrations between 0.25 and 0.91 nmol kg -1 using sample volumes of up to 2 L, generated results consistent with those of previous studies. Overall, the new methods thus enable unbiased δ 114 Cd measurements for diverse sample types with a 2SD precision of better than ±0.07‰, even for samples with 10 ng or less of natural Cd.

Abstract:Herein, we present a new method for determining the Ca isotopic composition of geological samples. To eliminate matrix elements from Ca, a column chromatography method was developed using a N,N,N'N' tetraoctyl-1,5-diglycolamide (TODGA) resin. The Ca isotopic compositions were measured by a multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) without collision cell equipment, especially that direct measurement to 44Ca/40Ca can be achieved. To mitigate the interference from 40Ar during 40Ca measurement, the cold plasma technique was used to suppress the Ar+ generation, resulting in a background Ar+ intensity of <300 mV, in contrast to the conventional hot plasma conditions, which typically yield thousands of volts for Ar+ intensities. Given the potential for a concentration mismatch between the sample and bracketed standard solutions to cause an intensive shift in measured Ca isotopic compositions, a correction for the [Ca] match is needed. To avoid matrix effects arising from residue matrix elements, it is crucial to limit the concentrations below 1% of Ca for most matrix elements (including Al, Mg, K, Na, and Sr) and below 1‰ for Fe. Notably, the tolerance of residue Sr is effectively improved compared to measurements with CC-MC-ICP-MS and traditional Hot-plasma-SSB-MC-ICP-MS methods with the conventional hot plasma technique, thereby lowering the complexity of column chemistry. The measured δ44/40Ca, δ44/42Ca, and ε40Ca values for eight reference materials agree well with previously reported values within analytical uncertainties. This method demonstrates long-term precision is better than 0.10‰ (two standard deviations) for both δ values (i.e., δ44/40Ca and δ44/42Ca). We anticipate that the proposed method will benefit the growth of the Ca isotope data set and foster an increase in the application of Ca isotope in Earth science studies.

Abstract:Biological reference materials with well-characterised stable isotope compositions are lacking in the field of ‘isotope biochemistry’, which seeks to understand bodily processes that rely on essential metals by determining metal stable isotope ratios. Here, we present Zn stable isotope data for six biological reference materials with certified trace metal concentrations: fish muscle, bovine muscle, pig kidney, human hair, human blood serum and human urine. Replicate analyses of multiple aliquots of each material achieved reproducibilities (2sd) of 0.04–0.13‰ for δ66/64Zn (which denotes the deviation of the 66Zn/64Zn ratio of a sample from a pure Zn reference material in parts per 1000). This implies only very minor isotopic heterogeneities within the samples, rendering them suitable as quality control materials for Zn isotope analyses. This endorsement is reinforced by (i) the close agreement of our Zn isotope data for two of the samples (bovine muscle and human blood serum) to previously published results for different batches of the same material and (ii) the similarity of the isotopic data for the samples (δ66/64Zn ≈ –0.8 to 0.0‰) to previously published Zn isotope results for similar biological materials. Further tests revealed that the applied Zn separation procedure is sufficiently effective to enable accurate data acquisition even at low mass resolving power (M/ΔM ≈ 400), as measurements and analyses conducted at much higher mass resolution (M/ΔM ≈ 8500) delivered essentially identical results.

Abstract:Stable Sn isotopes are emerging tracers for understanding the cycling of tin on Earth. Cassiterite, the most important Sn-bearing mineral in nature, commonly contains complex zoning and intergrowth textures that record the Sn mineralization history. Thus, in situ analysis of Sn isotopes in cassiterite could provide a powerful tool for deciphering Sn mineralization. In this study, we developed a method for in situ Sn isotopic analysis of cassiterite based on a nanosecond laser ablation system and a Nu 1700 Sapphire multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ns-LA-MC-ICP-MS). The laser ablation isotopic analyses were made by sample-standard bracketing with elemental doping of Sb introduced by solution nebulization. A newly developed large and homogeneous natural cassiterite crystal (lab ID: #cas17) was used as the matrix-matched bracketing standard for laser ablation analyses. To report in situ Sn isotope data with reference to the international Sn isotope reference material NIST 3161a, a simple and reliable method was developed to decompose cassiterite for precise and accurate Sn isotope analysis by solution nebulization MC-ICP-MS, and the delta Sn-122/118(3161a) of cassiterite "#cas17" was determined to be 0.36 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand. Based on a series of tests of different parameters (fluence, spot size, frequency, He gas flow rate, and ablation mode), the optimized analytical condition was found to be a 1 mu m s(-1) line scan with a laser spot size of 13 mu m and a laser fluence of 13.5 J cm(-2), firing at 5 Hz, in a He carrier gas flow at 760 ml min(-1). Under these conditions, the intermediate precision of the in situ Sn isotope analytical method was better than +/- 0.12 parts per thousand in delta Sn-122/118. Matrix effects from the trace elements of the natural cassiterite on measured Sn isotopic ratios were insignificant. The in situ Sn isotope analytical method was applied to different cassiterite samples, which yielded a range of 0.98 parts per thousand in delta Sn-122/118 among and within these cassiterite samples, and the laser ablation results were confirmed by the solution nebulization (SN) MC-ICP-MS analyses after dissolution. Our new method provides an efficient and effective approach for determining the Sn isotopic composition of cassiterite and could be applied to studies of Sn ore deposits.
