Abstract:Stable Sn isotopes are emerging tracers for understanding the cycling of tin on Earth. Cassiterite, the most important Sn-bearing mineral in nature, commonly contains complex zoning and intergrowth textures that record the Sn mineralization history. Thus, in situ analysis of Sn isotopes in cassiterite could provide a powerful tool for deciphering Sn mineralization. In this study, we developed a method for in situ Sn isotopic analysis of cassiterite based on a nanosecond laser ablation system and a Nu 1700 Sapphire multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ns-LA-MC-ICP-MS). The laser ablation isotopic analyses were made by sample-standard bracketing with elemental doping of Sb introduced by solution nebulization. A newly developed large and homogeneous natural cassiterite crystal (lab ID: #cas17) was used as the matrix-matched bracketing standard for laser ablation analyses. To report in situ Sn isotope data with reference to the international Sn isotope reference material NIST 3161a, a simple and reliable method was developed to decompose cassiterite for precise and accurate Sn isotope analysis by solution nebulization MC-ICP-MS, and the delta Sn-122/118(3161a) of cassiterite "#cas17" was determined to be 0.36 +/- 0.02 parts per thousand. Based on a series of tests of different parameters (fluence, spot size, frequency, He gas flow rate, and ablation mode), the optimized analytical condition was found to be a 1 mu m s(-1) line scan with a laser spot size of 13 mu m and a laser fluence of 13.5 J cm(-2), firing at 5 Hz, in a He carrier gas flow at 760 ml min(-1). Under these conditions, the intermediate precision of the in situ Sn isotope analytical method was better than +/- 0.12 parts per thousand in delta Sn-122/118. Matrix effects from the trace elements of the natural cassiterite on measured Sn isotopic ratios were insignificant. The in situ Sn isotope analytical method was applied to different cassiterite samples, which yielded a range of 0.98 parts per thousand in delta Sn-122/118 among and within these cassiterite samples, and the laser ablation results were confirmed by the solution nebulization (SN) MC-ICP-MS analyses after dissolution. Our new method provides an efficient and effective approach for determining the Sn isotopic composition of cassiterite and could be applied to studies of Sn ore deposits.

Abstract:We report the laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios for cassiterite of a known age and demonstrate that the Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios can be measured accurately and reproducibly with adequate precision for cassiterite with Hf contents around 100 mu g g(-1). Although cassiterite only has minor rare earth elements (REEs), corrections for Yb and Lu interferences are required as they may affect the determination of the Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios. Among the investigated samples, Rond-A has a homogeneous Hf isotopic composition. We recommend cassiterite sample Rond-A as a primary reference material for in situ Hf isotope analysis. The Kard sample has a homogeneous Hf isotopic composition and is suitable as a primary reference material once its Hf isotopic composition has been confirmed by solution-based MC-ICP-MS. Samples BB#7, 19MP, and 19GX showed minor variations in their Hf isotopic compositions and, therefore, can only be used as secondary reference materials.

Abstract:Cassiterite is the main ore mineral of Sn deposits, and may be used to date tin mineralization processes/processes. Both isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometer (ID-TIMS) and laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-MC-ICP-MS) have been applied to cassiterite U–Pb dating. Here we show that cassiterite U–Pb dating results using LA-ICP-MS are comparable to those using LA-MC-ICP-MS. Our results also show that Tera–Wasserburg U–Pb intercept age is far better than the previously used 206Pb/207Pb versus 238U/207Pb “isochron” age because the latter weighted data points with low proportions of common Pb more heavily, such that introducing larger errors. Moreover, 206Pbi/207Pb changes with age and 238U/207Pb ratios, such that yields results younger than the real ages with larger errors. Samples with multiple common Pb sources are difficult to date. Nevertheless, multiple common Pb in cassiterite are often associated with fluid inclusions that may be identified and avoided. The precisions of cassiterite U–Pb ages are not as good as zircon ages, but they provide direct dating on the mineralization processes/processes. Therefore, coupled studies on zircon and cassiterite dating may provide constraints on the relation between magmatism±hydrothermal activities and mineralization.
Cassiterite oxygen isotopes in magmatic-hydrothermal systems: in situ microanalysis, fractionation factor, and applications

Abstract:Tin and tungsten are important metals for the industrializing society. Deciphering the origin and evolution of hydrothermal fluids responsible for their formation is critical to underpin genetic models of ore formation. Traditional approaches obtain isotopic information mainly from bulk analysis of both ore and gangue minerals, or less frequently from in situ analysis of gangue minerals, which either bear inherited complexities and uncertainties or are indirect constraints. Hence, directly obtaining isotopic information from ore minerals such as cassiterite by in situ techniques is warranted. However, this has been hampered by challenges from both analytical and applicational aspects. In this study, we first demonstrate a lack of crystallographic orientation effects during cassiterite ion microprobe oxygen isotope analysis. Along with our newly developed matrix-matched reference material, the Yongde-Cst, which has a recommended δ18O value of 1.36 ± 0.16‰ (VSMOW) as defined by gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometry, in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite now is possible. We further refine the oxygen isotope fractionation (1000 ln α) for quartz-cassiterite by first-principles calculations, which is given by the equation of 1.259 × 106/T2 + 8.15 × 103/T − 4.72 (T is temperature in Kelvin). The 1000 ln α for quartz-cassiterite has a sensitive response to temperature, and makes cassiterite-quartz an excellent mineral pair in oxygen isotope thermometry, as described by the equation of T (℃) = 2427 × (δ18Oqtz − δ18Ocst)−0.4326 − 492.4. Using the well-established 1000 ln α of quartz-water, 1000 ln α of cassiterite-water is derived as 2.941 × 106/T2 − 11.45 × 103/T + 4.72 (T in Kelvin), which shows a weak response to temperature. This makes cassiterite an ideal mineral from which to derive δ18O of fluids as robust temperature estimates are no longer a prerequisite. We have applied oxygen isotope analysis to cassiterite samples from six Sn(-W) deposits in China. The results show considerable variability in δ18O values both within a single deposit and among studied deposits. Combining the δ18O of cassiterite samples and the equilibrium oxygen isotope fractionation, we find that the δ18O values of ore-forming fluids show a strong magmatic affinity with variable but mostly no to low degree involvements (~0-10%) of meteoric water, hence our results invite a reassessment on the extent and role of meteoric water in Sn-W mineralization. This study demonstrates that in situ oxygen isotope analysis of cassiterite is a promising tool to refine sources of ore-forming fluids, and to decode hydrothermal dynamics controlling tin and tungsten mineralization.

Improved in situ Sr isotopic analysis by a 257 nm femtosecond laser in combination with the addition of nitrogen for geological minerals

Abstract:In situ Sr isotope analysis of geological materials by laser ablation multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) is a powerful tracer technique for tracking magmatic source components and geological processes. However, the accuracy and precision of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio are limited in the analysis of natural minerals because of the low-Sr concentration, the isobaric interference or small grains with complex textural contexts, especially for transparent minerals such as feldspars. In this study, analytical results demonstrated that ablation rates in fs laser ablation were consistent for various samples (0.08–0.11μm per pulse), but those in ns laser ablation were obviously material properties-dependent, such as the rates of 0.026μm per pulse and 0.144μm per pulse for feldspar and pyrite, respectively. In addition, at similar energy fluences, the sensitivities of Sr in feldspars analyzed by the fs laser were 3.4 times higher than those analyzed by the ns laser due to the higher ablation efficiency of the fs pulse. These advantages of the fs laser not only offer the benefit of eliminating or weakening the matrix effect during the laser ablation processes but also help to improve the analytical precision for transparent minerals. We also demonstrated that the isobaric interferences of calcium dimers and argides (CaAr++CaCa+) and Kr+ were dramatically reduced by factors of 6.5–11.7 and 5–12.5 in the presence of 6–12mlmin−1N2, respectively. Furthermore, with the addition of N2 (12mlmin−1), the sensitivity of Rb was inhibited, resulting in a decrease of 1.47 times in Rb/Sr signal ratios. Due to the effect of suppressing interferences by adding N2, both the stability and accuracy of the 87Sr/86Sr and 84Sr/86Sr ratios show improvement, especially for the Rb-rich feldspars.

Abstract:In cassiterite, tin is associated with metals (titanium, niobium, tantalum, indium, tungsten, iron, manganese, mercury). Knowledge of mineral chemistry and trace-element distribution is essential for: the understanding of ore formation, the exploration phase, the feasibility of ore treatment, and disposal/treatment of tailings after the exploitation phase. However, the availability of analytical methods make these characterisations difficult. We present a multitechnical approach to chemical and structural data that includes scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based imaging and microanalysis techniques such as: secondary and backscattered electrons, cathodoluminescence (CL), electron probe microanalyser (EPMA), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and confocal Raman-imaging integrated in a SEM (RISE). The presented results show the complementarity of the used analytical techniques. SEM, CL, EBSD, EPMA provide information from the interaction of an electron beam with minerals, leading to atomistic information about their composition, whereas RISE, Raman spectroscopy and imaging completes the studies with information about molecular vibrations, which are sensitive to structural modifications of the minerals. The correlation of Raman bands with the presence/absence of Nb, Ta, Fe (heterovalent substitution) and Ti (homovalent substitution) is established at a submicrometric scale. Combination of the different techniques makes it possible to establish a direct link between chemical and crystallographic data of cassiterite.
A Non-Matrix-Matched Calibration Method for In Situ Major and Trace Element Analysis of Scheelite by Nanosecond LA-ICP-MS

Abstract:In this work, a reliable and robust in situ non-matrix-matched calibration method is proposed for element composition determination in scheelite samples. With external calibration against the silicate glass standard reference material NIST SRM 610, the concentrations of both major elements (Ca and W) and trace elements (Si, Fe, Mo, Y, rare earth elements, etc.) in scheelite are determined using an ArF 193 nm excimer nanosecond laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS). Here, the ablation was performed by hole drilling under a helium (He) environment using a laser spot size of 35 μm and a laser repetition of 5 Hz, and the aerosols were then transported to a quadrupole ICP-MS by a mixture of He and make-up gas argon (Ar) with a total gas flow rate of 1.6 L/min. Results showed that there was no apparent matrix effect between the NIST SRM 610 and scheelite by this proposed method. With internal standardization against W, the obtained concentrations of CaO and WO3 were found to yield an average matrix CaO/WO3 mass fraction ratio of 0.245 (2σ = 0.003, n = 19), which agreed well with the value of 0.243 (2σ = 0.002, n = 15) from electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Furthermore, the accuracy of trace element analyses with this proposed non-matrix-matched calibration in situ method was evaluated by comparing the concentration results with those from bulk analysis by solution nebulizer ICP-MS (SN-ICP-MS). It was found that the quantification results from LA-ICP-MS and SN-ICP-MS were comparable, in particular showing a relative concentration bias of the total ∑REE+Y contents of less than 2%. This confirmed that scheelites can be accurately analyzed in situ by LA-ICP-MS without matrix-matched calibration standards. By using this developed in situ method, the element compositions in a series of scheelite samples from different W-associated deposits in China were successfully quantified, promising further genetic process investigation and associated geologic activities of the polymetallic resources.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are widely used as important geochemical tracers in earth and planetary sciences. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) techniques have been routinely used for the determination of REE concentrations in various minerals. Nevertheless, it is challenging to determine ultra-low REE contents (down to ng g-1). Cassiterite with ng level REE contents shows false positive Gd and Tb anomalies in various datasets obtained by LA-ICP-MS. Herein, a novel analytical protocol for accurate determination of ultra-trace REE by LA-ICP-MS/MS is developed using oxygen as reaction gas in mass shift mode, which avoids analytical artifacts caused by polyatomic interferences. Its application to cassiterite effectively eliminates Gd and Tb false positive anomalies. Both laser and solution cassiterite results have been used to testify the robustness of our protocol. The accuracy and precision of our approach, tested using the glass reference materials NIST 612 and NIST 614, is better than 10%. Our method can greatly facilitate analysis of other geological, archeological, environmental materials with large amounts of tin in the matrix that disturbs REE measurement.

Abstract:Vesuvianite is a common accessory mineral that usually occurs in metamorphosed and metasomatised, argillaceous carbonate rocks ( i.e. , skarn rocks) and as a late crystallising phase in igneous rocks such as nepheline syenites. Vesuvianite is a Ca-rich mineral that preferentially incorporates Sr and light rare earth elements (LREEs). Given that vesuvianite is susceptible to alteration and commonly contains inclusions, in situ laser ablation analysis is the preferred approach for measuring its Sr–Nd isotopic compositions. The use of matrix-matched and homogeneous reference materials is a prerequisite for laser ablation isotope analyses. Two in-house vesuvianite standards M6635 and M659 were used for external correction during in situ laser ablation analysis for Sr and Nd isotopic compositions, respectively. In this paper, we apply in situ Sr and Sm–Nd isotope analyses for 11 vesuvianite samples (M6635, M784, M1377, M660, M1439, M1450, M6601, 13MDL176, Wilui, Hazlov, and Goodall) from different locations. The obtained Sr and Sm–Nd isotopic compositions for these vesuvianite samples are consistent with those obtained by solution-based methods using MC-ICP-MS, which demonstrates the robustness of our analytical methods. We recommend that samples M6635, M784, M1377, and M1450 are suitable vesuvianite reference materials for in situ Sr isotope analyses, and sample M659 is a potential vesuvianite reference material for in situ Sm–Nd isotope analyses.

High Precision In-Situ Pb Isotopic Analysis of Sulfide Minerals by Femtosecond Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-situ microanalysis of Pb isotopic compositions in sulfide minerals is carried out by using femtosecond laser-ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(fs LA-MC-ICP-MS).High-temperature-activated carbon was used to filter Hg contained in the carrier gas,which reduced the Hg background signal by 48%and also lowered the detection limit of the analysis.Fractionation and mass discrimination effects existing in the ICP-MS analytical processes were corrected using an internal reference Tl in conjunction with an external reference NIST SRM 610.The proposed method was used to analyze the Pb isotopic compositions of chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite from the Dulong Sn-Zn-In polymetallic ore district.The results showed that in this ore district,the sulfide minerals and different grains of the same sulfide mineral show a large variation in Pb content up to 1000-fold.The studied pyrites show relatively higher Pb contents and homogeneous Pb isotopic compositions,whereas the sphalerites have low Pb contents but most variable Pb isotopic compositions.It is suggested that the large variation of Pb isotopic composition may reflect a late hydrothermal superimposition on the primary sulfide formation.In addition,radiogenic Pb accumulated by radioactive decay of trace amounts of U over time in the host minerals may also be one of the causes for the large variation range of Pb content and Pb isotopic composition of those low-Pb sphalerites.Chalcopyrite and sphalerite grains with Pb content greater than 10 ppm presented a consistent Pb isotopic distribution,whereas all the sulfide grains with Pb content greater than 100 ppm had consistent Pb isotopic composition within 2s measurement uncertainties.The in-situ analysis of Pb isotopic composition agreed well with the results obtained by conventional chemical methods within2s measurement uncertainties,indicating that the data obtained by fs LA-MC-ICP-MS are reliable.Additionally,this study indicates that the Pb isotopic composition could truthfully record the source of ore-forming minerals only for sulfide minerals with high Pb content.On the contrary,the Pb isotopic composition of low-Pb sulfide minerals may be affected by trace amounts of U in the host minerals that may lead to a highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratio.Alternatively,it is also possible that late fluid metasomatic overprinting may alter the Pb isotopic compositions.
Examining Fingerprint Trace Elements in Cassiterite: Implications for Primary Tin Deposit Exploration

Abstract:In this study, a machine learning method and a piece of cassiterite trace element composition data were used to find fingerprint trace elements that distinguish different tin (Sn) mineralization types and build tools for exploring primary Sn deposit exploration. The trace element dataset of cassiterite from the granite-related Sn metallogenic system was built using the following two approaches: (1) by analyzing the cassiterite samples from nine Sn deposits in Myanmar using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and (2) collecting published data. The resulting dataset contains 661 records of 12 trace elements in cassiterite from 4 mineralization types: pegmatite, greisen, quartz-vein, and skarn. The spider diagrams of trace elements and the principal component analysis indicate that cassiterite samples from the same one mineralization type are clustered together and have unique geochemical characteristics. Using recursive feature elimination with cross -validation and simulation, tantalum (Ta), niobium (Nb), manganese (Mn), hafnium (Hf), iron (Fe), scandium (Sc) and Sc/Ta, Sc/Hf, and Sc/Mn were selected as the fingerprint elements and ratios, respectively. The cluster distribution in the biplots of the fingerprint elements and ratios indicates that these fingerprints are sensitive to the mineralization type. The distribution in the biplots also reveals that there is an evolutionary sequence of magmatic-hydrothermal fluids from pegmatite to skarn at the cassiterite crystallization environment. This data -driven study improves our understanding of the isomorphism between Sn and ions with similar charge and ionic radii in cassiterite from different hydrothermal environments. The complementary relationships between va-nadium (V), Nb, and Ta are also identified. The element V is preferred to form a charge balance pair with Sc in cassiterite from skarn, whereas Ta and Nb are preferred to constitute a charge balance pair in cassiterite from the quartz-vein, pegmatite, and greisen. Our findings demonstrate that trace element compositions of detrital cassiterite grains from stream sediments can be used as an exploration tool to discover concealed primary Sn deposits and to evaluate the economic value based on the grade-tonnage model in the preliminary stage of mineral exploration.
Constraints on tin mineralization events by cassiterite LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating

Abstract:Cassiterite is the dominant ore mineral in most tin deposits and an associated mineral in some tungsten and VMS deposits. It has a detectable U content and it generally remains stable and is not easily affected by late hydrothermal events. Thus, the U-Pb age of cassiterite may help constrain the timing of tin mineralization. Both isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometer (ID-TIMS) and laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LA-MC-ICP-MS) have been applied to cassiterite U-Pb dating. Here we show that cassiterite U-Pb dating results using LA-ICP-MS are comparable to those using LA-MC-ICP-MS. Herein, three cassiterite samples are analyzed by in-situ LA-ICP-MS method. Dating of two cassiterite samples from Rutongo Nb-Ta-Sn and Gatumba Ta-Sn rare metal deposits in Central Africa gives U-Pb ages of 957 +/- 21 Ma and 998 +/- 10 Ma, respectively, which agree well with the zircon U-Pb age of the parental G4 granite and represent the timing of rare metal mineralization event. One cassiterite collected from the Piaotang W-Sn deposit in the Nanling Range of South China gives an precise timing constraint on mineralization (159.5 +/- 1.5 Ma), which is also consistent with the published zircon U-Pb age of parental granite and Ar-40-Ar-39 age of cassiterite.

Abstract:In this paper, a high sensitivity method for measurements of Nd isotopes as NdO+, on a TIMS using a single W filament with TaF5 as an ion emitter is presented. Although analyzing Nd isotopes as oxides (NdO+) is a well known technique, this is the first report to analyze Nd isotopic compositions as oxides using W filaments and the TaF5 emitter. When 0.5–1 ng loads of a Neodymium isotopic reference reagent, JNdi-1, were measured using this method, the ion yields were found to be mostly in excess of 15% and could be as high as 32%. Internal precision on 143Nd/144Nd could be better than 10 ppm (2SE) for 1 ng JNdi-1 loads and better than 15 ppm (2SE) for 0.5 ng JNdi-1 loads; thirteen replicates of 0.5–1 ng JNdi-1 loads yielded a 143Nd/144Nd value of 0.512112 ± 0.000028 (2SD). Compared with the previously reported NdO+ measurement method using the Re (or W) filaments + Silica-gel + H3PO4 loading techniques, this method has advantages including higher sensitivity, a more stable ion beam, and no need for oxygen gas to be bled into the ion source chamber. Sm isotopes were analyzed as Sm+ using the W filaments and the TaF5 emitter, and high sensitivity and good ion beam stability were also obtained. Several international rock reference materials, including an ultramafic rock reference material USGS PCC-1 that contains very low amounts of Sm and Nd, were analyzed with full column chemistry and the TaF5 method, and the results of Sm, Nd concentrations and Nd isotopic data are in good agreement with the reported values. Combined with a highly efficient and low-blank column chemistry to separate Nd from Sm, Ce, and Pr, this method holds potential to analyze Sm, Nd concentrations and Nd isotopic compositions of highly depleted peridotites; very small aliquots of minerals such as garnets; extra-terrestrial materials of limited sample size; and environmental samples that contain very low quantities of Sm and Nd.

Abstract:Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and laser ablation (LA) are widely used to study the trace element composition of minerals, including silicates; nevertheless, methodological activities in this area aimed at increasing the sensitivity and locality and reducing composition error, remain relevant. The paper describes methodological approaches for studying the trace element composition of a number of silicate minerals using NexION 300S quadrupole ICP-MS with an NWR 213 LA attachment, obtained on standard synthetic glasses NIST SRM 612 and 610, as well as a number of interlaboratory zircon standards Mud Tank, GJ-1, 91500, Plesovice, Temora-2 and clinopyroxene samples 1636 and 1780 from clinopyroxenite of the Nizhniy Tagil massif (Urals). Presented here are the metrological characteristics of the analysis technique (the accuracy in the determination of elements from Li to U) and variations in sensitivity for different elements, obtained with a crater diameter of 13, 20, 25, 50 and 100 microns. The MS sensitivity drift analysis has been performed through an 8-hour analytical session; a comparison has been made between the results obtained and the literature data; a satisfactory agreement of the results has been observed. The analytical errors allow the use of methods for conducting research in solving various geochemical problems.
Pulsed exsolution of magmatic ore-forming fluids in tin-tungsten systems: a SIMS cassiterite oxygen isotope record

Abstract:Utilizing in situ oxygen isotope analysis, we demonstrate the potential of cassiterite as a robust recorder of fluid source and evolution. Cassiterite is an ore mineral, and its mineral–water oxygen isotope fractionation factor is only weakly temperature-dependent. Unlike most explored gangue minerals such as quartz, cassiterite can provide a direct and robust archive of ore-forming fluids, e.g., fluid oxygen isotope composition (δ18O values). Core and rim domains of a representative cassiterite crystal from the Piaotang tin-tungsten (Sn-W) deposit, China, are characterized by contrasting δ18O values. Cassiterite δ18O values are –2.14 ± 0.41 ‰ for the core and 2.36 ± 0.36 ‰ for the rim, which equate to fluid δ18O values of ~ 4.1 ‰ (core) and ~ 8.6 ‰ (rim). Additionally, the cassiterite rim is enriched in niobium (Nb) and tantalum (Ta) compared to the mineral core. The δ18O, and Nb and Ta data are interpreted to reflect core to rim crystallization from distinct pulses of magmatic-hydrothermal fluids that possessed a discrete oxygen isotopic, and Nb and Ta composition. Such a pulsed process could be a common feature for Sn-W deposits, and is critical to the formation of giant deposits with high metal grades. Involvement of meteoric water associated with the first mineralization stage reaches ~ 33%, but is limited (~ 7%) in the second (main) mineralization stage. Therefore, cooling induced by fluid mixing may not be necessary for tin deposition, and our new findings invite a reassessment of the role of meteoric water in other Sn-W deposits. Our petrologic modelling shows that fluids exsolved from a 10 – 15 km3 parental granitic magma can yield the Sn-W endowments recorded at Piaotang. Further, during magma fractionation, Sn and W are preferentially transferred into fluids compared to Nb and Ta. As a consequence, fluid chemistry is the primary factor controlling metal endowment and zoning in W-Sn deposits, as observed at Piaotang, and explains the predominant magmatic origin of Nb–Ta deposits.

Abstract:A technique using isotope-ratio-monitoring gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (irmGCMS) and excimer laser fluorination for in situ oxygen isotope analysis of silicates is described. The irmGCMS and oxygen extraction line is connected by a newly developed interface, reducing the time for a single analysis to less than 10 min. The precision obtained for δ18O is similar to what has been reported for excimer laser fluorination using dual inlet systems. δ18O values of two olivine standards had 1σ precision of ±0.14‰ (n=19 and n=10) and that of Dörentrup quartz had ±0.17‰. Eleven analyses of a large zircon crystal had a precision of ±0.12‰. However, between 300 and 600 nmol oxygen was liberated for a single analysis, equivalent to cylindrical laser holes 250 to 350 μm in diameter and depth. In the future it will be feasible to measure the isotope ratio of cylindrical volumes 150 μm in diameter simply by reducing the volume of the extraction line. While this is still significantly larger than what is possible with ion probes, the ratios obtained by excimer laser-irmGCMS are highly accurate and precise without correction. The value of this technique for in situ oxygen isotope measurements is demonstrated with two rock slabs from metamorphic rocks of the Dabie–Sulu ultra-high-pressure belt, China.
Non‐destructive quantitative analysis of melt inclusions in extraterrestrial samples: Case study of chassignite via nanoscale X‐ray computed tomography

Abstract:Estimation of the composition of planetary rocks and minerals is crucial for understanding their formation processes. In this study, we present the application of X‐ray nano‐computed tomography (nano‐XCT) for non‐destructive three‐dimensional (3‐D) phase analysis and estimation of phase abundances in rare Martian meteorite samples, specifically chassignite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2737. We determined the most suitable laser power for minimizing artifacts and maximizing phase contrast. By utilizing nano‐XCT, we successfully identified and segmented primary phases in the bulk meteorite sample. Additionally, we were able to locate and segment crystallized silicate melt inclusions within the meteorite. The phase abundances in bulk NWA 2737 and within melt inclusions calculated using nano‐XCT were in good agreement with previous studies that used thin section calculations, demonstrating the reliability of nano‐XCT as a non‐destructive alternative for estimating bulk phase abundances in rare samples. This study develops a benchmarking protocol and demonstrates the efficacy of nano‐XCT as a non‐destructive technique for generating an overview of phase distribution and assemblages of melt inclusions within rare samples. Future research can benefit from combining non‐destructive 3‐D phase assemblage estimations with non‐destructive 3‐D chemical analysis techniques to achieve a fully non‐destructive parental magma composition estimation of rare cumulate samples.

Abstract:Rationale A novel laser ablation‐isotope ratio mass spectrometry (LA‐IRMS) method for in situ analysis of sulfur isotopes in sulfides has been developed. Instead of the in situ reaction applied by the traditional laser microprobe, the analyte gas preparation in this method is separated temporally and spatially from the LA, resulting in improved precision and accuracy. Methods Our LA‐IRMS system combines an ultraviolet LA system, an elemental analyzer (EA), a custom‐built cryogenic concentration system, a continuous‐flow interface, and an IRMS. The sulfide aerosol particles generated from LA were transferred by a helium carrier gas from the ablation cell into the reaction tube and were then converted into SO 2 . Subsequently, SO 2 was enriched in two cold traps and was finally introduced into the ion source of the IRMS through the continuous‐flow interface. Results We measured three synthetic and four natural sulfide reference materials to test the performance of this method. Precisions of ±0.25‰–±0.48‰ and ±0.32‰–±0.64‰ (1SD, n = 5) for δ 34 S values of synthetic and natural sulfide standards can be obtained for spot sizes ranging from 64 to 80 μm. Measured values and their recommended values showed a good linear relationship ( R 2 within 0.998 and 0.9995) with the slope of approaching unity (within 1.0509 and 1.1313). Conclusions Data from the measurement of reference materials showed that the precision and accuracy of our method were satisfactory. This method is a powerful tool for in situ sulfur isotope measurement of sulfides and can be further applied to in situ carbon and oxygen isotope analyses.
