Abstract:By employing the 3D concrete printing (3DCP) technique, modern structures can be built with lower costs, lower construction waste, and higher efficiency. Considering the brittle failure modes of 3DCP, a significant difference in properties between the fiber and the host cementitious composite may cause delamination. A functionally graded material can be used to overcome this by distributing fibers according to the loads they are to bear. In this study, copper-coated short discontinuous fibers are used to examine the effect on the flexural strength of the 3D printed mortar. The results show that the flexural strength of 3D printed mortar increased by 31.05% without any decrease in the corresponding compressive strength when adding fibers up to 1.00%. Short discontinuous fibers present potential in developing 3D printed functionally graded cementitious composite.
