Abstract:Sulfur-containing dynamic polymers had attracted significant attention due to their unique chemical structures with high reversibility. Utilizating sulfur, an inexpensive industrial waste product, to synthesize dynamic polysulfide polymers through reverse vulcanization has been a notable approach. However, this method required high temperatures and resulted in the release of unpleasant oders. In this study, we presented a robust method for the preparation of sulfur-rich polymers with dynamic polysulfide bonds from elemental sulfur and inexpensive epoxide monomers via a one-pot strategy at the mild room temperature. Different types of polysulfide molecules and polymers were synthesized by reacting various epoxide compounds with sulfur, along with the investigation of their structures and dynamic behaviors. It was noteworthy that the obatined polymers prepared from m-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-N,N-bis(2,3-epoxypropyl)aniline and elemental sulfur exhibit multiple dynamic behaviors, including polysulfide metathesis and polysulfide-thiol exchange, enabling their rapid stress relaxation, self-healing, reprocessing and degradable properties of the cross-linked polymer. More importantly, the hydroxyl groups at the side chains from epoxide ring opening exhibited potential transesterification. This work provided a facile strategy for designing dynamic sulfur-rich polymers via a mild synthesis route.

Abstract:The alternating copolymerization of one-carbon (C1) building blocks including carbon dioxide (CO2) and its sulfur analogues of carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) with epoxides afford new copolymers, namely polycarbonates and polythiocarbonates, with tailored chain structures and properties. This review mainly focuses on the recent advances in C1-involved copolymerization via heterogeneous catalysis of zinc-cobalt(III) double metal cyanide complex [Zn–Co(III) DMCC] catalyst. The chemistry of zinc-hydroxyl bond of Zn–Co(III) DMCC is responsible to the copolymerization of these C1 monomers with epoxides through the formation of C–O (S) bond. The syntheses of CO2-based copolymers with various topologies are also reviewed in detail. The utilization of CO2, COS and CS2 as monomers for polymer synthesis have significant contributions to the sustainable use of renewable resources.

Abstract:Elemental sulfur, a waste product of the oil refinement process, represents a promising raw material for the synthesis of degradable polymers. We show that simple lithium alkoxides facilitate the polymerisation of elemental sulfur S8 with industrially relevant propylene oxide (PO) and CS2 (a base chemical sourced from waste S8 itself) to give poly(monothiocarbonate-alt-Sx) in which x can be controlled by the amount of supplied sulfur. The in-situ generation of thiolate intermediates obtained by a rearrangement, which follows CS2 and PO incorporation, allows to combine S8 and epoxides into one polymer sequence that would otherwise not be possible. Mechanistic investigations reveal that alkyl oligosulfide intermediates from S8 ring opening and sulfur chain length equilibration represent the better nucleophiles for inserting the next PO if compared to the trithiocarbonates obtained from the competing CS2 addition, which causes the sequence selectivity. The polymers can be crosslinked in-situ with multifunctional thiols to yield reprocessable and degradable networks. Our report demonstrates how mechanistic understanding allows to combine intrinsically incompatible building blocks for sulfur waste utilisation.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:The development of sulfur-rich polymers derived from elementary sulfur provides an innovative approach to industrial waste valorization. Despite significant advancements in polymerization techniques and promising applications beyond traditional polymers, polysulfide networks are still primarily stabilized by diene crosslinkers, forming robust C–S bonds that hinder the degradation of sulfur-based polymers. In this study, the anionic ring-opening copolymerization of chemically homologous S8 and cyclic disulfides was explored to yield robust sulfur-rich copolymers with high molecular weight. The incorporation of polysulfide segments not only efficiently activated the crosslinked networks for excellent reprocessability and mechanical adaptability but also endowed the resulting copolymer with high optical transparency in the near-infrared region. More importantly, the dynamic disulfide crosslinking sites promoted the chemical closed-loop recyclability of the polysulfide networks via reversible S–S cleavage. This innovative inverse vulcanization strategy based on dynamic disulfide crosslinkers offers a promising pathway for the advanced applications and upcycling of high-performance sulfur-rich polymers.

Abstract:The development of a controlled and reliable method to construct well-defined sulfur-containing polymers has sparked great interest in polymer science. Herein, we present the trial on the copolymerization of isothiocyanates with episulfides in the presence of organic onium salts, which provides direct access to a class of sulfur-rich polymers. This methodology has combined advantages of simple operation, no metals, mild conditions (25–100 °C), controlled polymerization performance (Mn > 105 g mol–1, Đ < 1.3), and high reactivity (turnover frequency over 1000 h–1). Abstract:It has been a challenge to synthesize thiol-functionalized polyacetylenes because of the poisoning effect of mercapto group on the early transition-metal catalysts. Rhodium complexes such as [Rh(cod)Cl](2) can catalyze the polymerizations but the products are insoluble and intractable. In this work, we tackled this challenge. Sulfur-containing polyacetylenes with macroscopic processability were successfully synthesized by separating thiol pendant from polyene backbone with a flexible spacer (in PI), capping free mercapto group with acetyl or alkyl group (in P2 or P3), and using a zwitterionic complex Rh+[eta(6)-C6H5(nbd)B-(C6H5)(3)] as catalyst. The soluble polymers were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, PL, and TGA analyses. Due to the specific interactions between thiol group and zinc cation, ZnO nanoparticles were chemisorbed onto the surfaces of polymer films, as verified by AFM analysis. Polymer P2 and ZnO nanoparticles could be readily hybridized by simply mixing the two components in an organic solvent such as chloroform, THF, or DMF. SEM images revealed that the morphology of the film cast from the solution of the P2/ZnO hybrid was dominated by well-dispersed nanoparticles and smooth surface.

Abstract:Sulfur, which is generated from the waste byproducts in the oil and gas refinery industry, is an abundant, cheap, stable, and readily available source in the world. However, the utilization of excessive amounts of sulfur is mostly limited, and developing novel methods for sulfur conversion is still a global concern. Here, we report a facile one-step conversion from elemental sulfur to functional poly(O-thiocarbamate)s through a multicomponent polymerization of sulfur, diols, and diisocyanides, which possesses a series of advantages such as mild condition (55 degrees C), short reaction time (1 h), 100% atom economy, and transition-metal free in the catalyst system. Seven poly(O-thiocarbamate)s are constructed with high yields (up to 95%), large molecular weight (up to 53100 of M-w), good solubility in organic solvents, and completely new polymer structures. The poly(O-thiocarbamate)s possess a high refractive index above 1.7 from 600 to 1700 nm by adjusting the sulfur content. By incorporating tetraphenylethene (TPE) moieties into the polymer structure, the poly(O-thiocarbamate)s can also be designed as fluorescent sensors to detect harmful metal cation of Hg2+ in a turn-on mode with high sensitivity (LOD = 32 nM) and excellent selectivity (over interference cations of Pb2+, Au3+, Ag+). Different from the previous reports, the exact coordination structure is first identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which is revealed in a tetracoordination fashion (two sulfur and two chloride) using a model coordination compound.

Abstract:With increasing global sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, it is crucial to utilize emitted SO2 in the manufacture of industrially valuable products, such as thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers. Herein, we developed a novel TPU elastomer with a polysulfite oligomer, derived from the copolymerization of SO2 and propylene oxide (PO) as the soft segments (SSs). When the SS molecular weight was kept constant, the increase in hard segment (HS) content enhanced tensile strength but reduced stretchability. Meanwhile, when HS content was constant, both the tensile strength and stretchability decreased with increasing SS molecular weight. Furthermore, distinct micro-phase separation, moderately intense hydrogen-bonding interactions, and better crystallinity enhanced the mechanical properties of the elastomers. Notably, SO2-based TPU elastomers exhibited superior mechanical properties to those of poly(propylene oxide)-based TPU elastomers obtained via the same route. Therefore, the use of SO2-based oligomer diols in TPU elastomer construction enhances mechanical properties and provides a method for SO2 utilization.

Abstract:Using carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) as sulfur‐containing and one‐carbon feedstocks to make value‐added products is paramount for both pure and applied chemistry and environmental science. One of the practical strategies is to copolymerize these bulk chemicals with epoxides to produce sulfur‐containing polymers. This approach contributes to improving the sustainability of polymer manufacturing, provides highly desired functional polymer materials, and has attracted much attention. However, these copolymerizations invariably exhibit the intensely complicated chemistry of O/S exchange reaction, leading to sulfur‐containing polymers with diverse architectures. As the understanding of O/S exchange continues to deepen, recent efforts have guided significant advances in the synthesis of CS2‐ and COS‐based polymers. This review examines the O/S exchange chemistry and summarizes the recent progress in this field to promote the further advance of synthesizing sulfur‐containing polymers from CS2 and COS.

Abstract:Converting elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich polymers provides a sustainable strategy to replace fossil-fuel-based plastics. However, the low ring strain of eight-membered rings, i.e., S8 monomers, compromises their ring-opening polymerization (ROP) due to lack of an enthalpic driving force and as a consequence, poly(sulfur) is inherently unstable. Here we report that copolymerization with cyclic disulfides, e.g., 1,2-dithiolanes, can enable a simple and energy-saving way to convert elementary sulfur into sulfur-rich thermoplastics. The key strategy is to combine two types of ROP — both mediated by disulfide bond exchange — to tackle the thermodynamic instability of poly(sulfur). Meanwhile, the readily modifiable sidechain of the cyclic disulfides provides chemical space to engineer the mechanical properties and dynamic functions over a large range, e.g., self-repairing ability and degradability. Thus, this simple and robust system is expected to be a starting point for the organic transformation of inorganic sulfur toward sulfur-rich functional and green plastics.

Metal-free Access to Precise Synthesis of Sulfur-containing Polymers

Abstract:Sulfur-containing polymers are important functional materials and can be used as optical, anti-corrosion and antifouling materials. Using C1 monomers (i.e. carbonyl sulfide (COS), carbon disulfide (CS2)) to copolymerize with epoxides have been rapidly developed in very recent years. Recently, Xing-Hong Zhang et al. reported a metal-free living copolymerization of COS with epoxides via the cooperative catalysis of organic Lewis pairs including organic bases and thioureas as hydrogen-bond donors, afforded poly(monothiocarbonate)s with 100% alternating degree, > 99% tail-to-head content, high molecular weight (up to 9.84 x 10(5)) and narrow molecular weight distributions (1.13 - 1.23). The turnover frequencies (TOFs) of the catalyst are as high as 112 h(-1) at 25 degrees C. Kinetic and mechanistic results suggest that the supramolecular specific recognition of thiourea to epoxide and base to COS promoted the copolymerization cooperatively. The synthesis of sulfur-containing polymer developed by Xing-Hong and co-workers is very promising to the utilization of C1 monomers derived from the use of oil and coal.

Abstract:Polymeric sulfur generated from thermal ROP forms a semi crystalline, intractable solid with poor mechanical properties and is not easy to melt and resists solid processing. Stabilization of diradical polymeric sulfur form can be achieved by reaction with dienes which stabilizes the polymeric sulfur (depolymerization of polymeric sulfur by polymerization with diene co-monomer). The present work demonstrates how the physical properties of the sulfur based copolymer can be tuned by varying the vinylic and allylic modifier. These particular new structurally modified sulfur based copolymers could act as efficient polymer binders for making concrete materials.

Abstract:Functionalized PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles bearing sulfonic groups on the surface were successfully synthesized via emulsion copolymerization using a polymerizable emulsifier a olefin solfonate (AOS). As demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, well-defined core-shell PS/SiO2 composite nanoparticles with a diameter of 50 nm were obtained. Sulfonic groups introduced onto the surface of the composite nanoparticles were quantified by FTIR, and can be controlled to some extent via a two-stage procedure.

Abstract:The synthesis of poly(thioether), a highly desired sulfur-containing polymer, is still a key challenge. Herein, we report a simple and facile approach to poly(thioether)s by closed-system one-pot reaction of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and epoxides. This route underwent the coupling reaction of COS with epoxides, followed by decarboxylative ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the generated mixed cyclic thiocarbonates with releasing of CO2 and a little bit of COS. Organic base was used as catalyst and initiator in the two steps, respectively. The oxygen/sulfur exchange reaction was driven by successive regioselective elementary reactions and spontaneous releasing of CO2 (COS), leading to the sulfur atom of COS transferring to poly(thioether)s, which was well demonstrated by DFT studies. This work provides an easyto-handle, metal-free route to poly(thioether)s bearing diverse structures by using readily available chemicals.
Synthesis, characterization, curing, thermophysical and mechanical properties of ethylene dichloride-based polysulfide polymers

Abstract:Good resistance to the solvent and excellent adhesion to many substrates are the significant features of polysulfide polymers. They are known to have extensive applications as sealants, adhesives and coatings. In this research, a series of polysulfide polymers of linear organic monomer (ethylene dichloride) and sodium-based aqueous monomers are synthesized using interfacial polymerization and zinc oxide (ZnO) is used as a curing agent. The curing process of the synthesized polymers is studied using a rheometer at 160 °C. The cured and uncured samples are characterized by Fourier-transform infrared, Raman, XRD, DSC, Shore A and tensile tests. XRD results showed that cured samples possessed complete amorphous behavior whereas in the non-cured samples the structure shifts to the amorphous phase by increasing the sulfur content. The study of mechanical properties showed that with increasing sulfur content, the elastic modulus and elongation at break were increased. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature and crosslinking density were increased with increasing sulfur content whereas hardness was decreased. Besides, Thermogravimetric analysis results showed that in the cured samples the thermal stability was increased with increasing sulfur content. Also, all samples were resistant to benzine, gasoline, white spirit, engine oil and brake-fluid.
