Abstract:•The abnormal cracking of polycarbonate plates used in the gearbox oil level gauge for high-speed train was systematically studied and analyzed.•The failure cause of the polycarbonate plates with the middle horizontal crack was found the environmental stress cracking and thermal fatigue.•The failure cause of the polycarbonate plates with the inclined crack was the forced installation.
