Abstract:This paper deals with the effects of exposure in simulated seawater sea-sand concrete (SWSSC) environment on the tensile fatigue damage mechanisms and fatigue performance of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) rebars. Static tensile tests and tension-tension fatigue tests of reference rebars were performed under various stress levels (1.0, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7 and 0.6) with a constant stress ratio of 0.1. Fatigue tests of corroded CFRP rebars after their exposure to simulated SWSSC pore solution at 55°C for 42, 63 and 84 days, respectively, were also performed under the stress level of 0.5. Tensile failure modes and fatigue damage mechanisms corresponding to various stress levels were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the reference and exposed CFRP rebars. Furthermore, the relations between the fatigue life expectancy and their underlying fatigue damage mechanisms were carefully analysed. Then benchmark S-N curve of CFRP reference rebars were obtained. To predict the fatigue performance of corroded CFRP rebars, an effective stress level method was proposed to evaluate the residual fatigue life based on the benchmark S-N curve. The predicted results have good correlations with the experimental data.
