Abstract:In this study, a series of copper species supported on TiO2 catalysts were synthesized. With respect to the CuO/TiO2 catalyst, around 75% NOx was reduced between 200 and 250 degrees C and a negative deNO(x) efficiency was achieved above 350 degrees C. The existence of plentiful reactive surface oxygen species favored the activation of NOx and NH3, thus leading to satisfactory activity levels at lower temperatures. Due to this, NH3 over-oxidized to NOx was also facilitated and the portion of NH3 reducing NOx to N-2 or N2O in the reactions showed a downward trend as temperature increased, which explained the decreasing high-temperature NOx removal efficiency of this sample. For CuSO4/TiO2 and SO2-treated CuO/TiO2 catalysts, the generation of plentiful strong acid sites at the expense of the reactive surface oxygen species suppressed the activation of NH3 and NOx to some extent at lower temperatures and also negatively affected the over-oxidation of NH3 to NOx at elevated temperatures, which explained the changes in the operating temperature window to a high temperature region.

Mechanistic Insights into the Enhanced Low-Temperature Activity of Cu-SSZ-13 by MnOx-CeO2 Modification for Standard SCR Reaction and Fast SCR Reactions

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 has been commercially utilized as NH3-SCR catalyst for diesel vehicles, yet its performance is hindered at low-temperatures and further inhibited by NO2. These issues could be mitigated by MnOx-CeO2 modification, but the specific roles of MnOx and CeO2 remained unclear. Through a combination of characterization methods, TPD/TPSR and DRIFTS, a promotional mechanism was proposed. In the standard SCR reaction, MnOx and CeO2 modification facilitated NO oxidative activation by reducible Mn species and active oxygen species, promoting the L-H pathway by nitrite/nitrate species reacting with adsorbed NH3 species. MnOx modification proved particularly effective for NO oxidative activation, generating monodentate nitrate and nitrite as active intermediates, thereby contributing to the superior low-temperature activity. Although the MnOx and CeO2 modification also reduced high-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13, the MnOx-CeO2 modification maintained high-temperature activity of Cu-SSZ-13 owing to the synergistic interaction between MnOx and CeO2 on Cu-SSZ-13. In the fast SCR reaction, MnOx modification promoted the reduction of NH4NO3 and inhibited N2O release by producing bidentate nitrate and monodentate nitrate, and CeO2 modification enhanced the reactivity and instability of NH4NO3, mitigating NH4NO3 inhibition on NO reduction. This work provided an improved understanding of the standard SCR and fast SCR reactions of Cu-SSZ-13-based catalysts at low temperatures.
Enhanced hydrothermal stability of Cu-SSZ-13 by compositing with Cu-SAPO-34 in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with ammonia

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 is a highly active catalyst to remove NOx in the emission of diesel-powered engine. However, the enhancement of its stability in high-temperature (HT) hydrothermal conditions is a well-known challenge in application. This work presents a simple strategy to significantly improve its hydrothermal stability under HT hydrothermal condition by mechanically mixing another CHA type zeolite, Cu-SAPO-34. Both the two zeolites are synthesized via one-pot method, mixed in different ratios, and treated in 10% H2O/air at 750 °C for 16 h. The mixed samples are characterized before and after the hydrothermal treatment, and tested in NH3-SCR from 150 to 550 °C. The results show the activity of the hydrothermally treated catalysts increases with the increase of the amount of Cu-SAPO-34 up to 50 wt% in the mixed sample. The hydrothermal stability of Cu-SSZ-13 is obviously enhanced by mixing with Cu-SAPO-34. The dealumination is suppressed during the hydrothermal treatment; the framework and the isolated Cu2+ sites are largely maintained in Cu-SSZ-13. This is attributed to the interaction between the two CHA zeolites during the hydrothermal treatment. We propose the delivery of extra-framework P species from Cu-SAPO-34 to Cu-SSZ-13 is critical to enhance the HT hydrothermal stability.

In-situ One-Pot Synthesis of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 Catalysts with Highly Efficient NH3-SCR Catalytic Performance as Well as Superior H2O/SO2 Tolerability

Abstract:Series of Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalysts with variable Ti content were prepared via convenient in-situ one-pot synthesizing strategy. Systematic evaluations of the NH 3 -SCR catalytic performance over the obtained catalysts were conducted. Results show that Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 with appropriate Ti content (in the current work Ti 0.81 /Cu 2.15 -SSZ-13) could serve as capable candidate for NH 3 -SCR application, as it exhibits highly efficient catalytic activity with expanded operation temperature window width from 140 to 540 °C, nearly 100% N 2 selectivity, as well as superior tolerability against water vapor and SO 2 . Further structural/physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the obtained Ti/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts possess well-crystallized characteristic chabazite (CHA) structure. Isolated Cu 2+ and monomeric Ti 4+ are recognized as the primary active species, as the former mainly contributes to SCR reaction at low temperatures, while the latter are conducive for improving the high temperature SCR activity. Ti over doping would result in partial destruction of the zeolite structure, occupation of Cu 2+ cation sites and formation of surface aggregated TiO x , thus leading to unsatisfactory NH 3 -SCR performances. Moreover, formation of agglomerated CuO x species during hydrothermal ageing and blockage of surface active sites by sulfate species formed during SO 2 pretreatment are considered responsible for activity deterioration in the tolerability tests.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 has been evidenced to perform well during low temperature range while Fe-SSZ-13 exhibits high NOx conversion at relative high temperatures in standard selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3. Considering the respective advantages of Cu and Fe species, we attempt to combine these two elements to overcome single metal deficiency and to construct a more efficient catalyst for NH3-SCR over a broader temperature window. A series of Fe-Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were prepared by ion exchange method on the basis of one-pot synthesized CuSSZ-13. The influence of concentrations of Fe(NO3)3 and exchanging time was considered in the preparing process, and the obtained catalysts were applied to test activity under standard SCR reaction. The superior performance with a moderate Fe/Cu ratio of 1.29 could be attributed to the co-effect of multiple active species, namely Cu(OH)+ and Fe(OH)2+ as well as oligomeric iron. The dominant Cu(OH)+ species in Fe-Cu-SSZ-13-1.29 may account for the excellent low temperature (< 200 oC) performance, while isolated Cu2+ and abundance of Fe ion monomers/oligomer species may be active at higher temperatures. Larger Fe2O3 particles descend the NOx elimination either by blocking the pores in zeolites or increasing the NH3 oxidation ability at high temperature. In-situ DRIFTS studies showed several important intermediates (ad-NO2, NO+, NO3- , NO2- , Cu(Fe)-NH3, NH4NO3), and both nitrite and nitrate route are proposed to be the standard SCR reaction mechanism at low temperatures.
Study on the Performance of the Zr-Modified Cu-SSZ-13 Catalyst for Low-Temperature NH3-SCR

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 and Zr-modified Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Zr/Cu mass ratios were prepared by ion-exchange and impregnation methods, respectively. The NH3-SCR performance tests were performed using the catalyst performance evaluation device to investigate the effects of different Zr/Cu mass ratios on the catalyst ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR) performance. X-ray diffraction, ICP-OES, BET, NH3 temperature-programed desorption (NH3-TPD), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) were used to characterize the catalysts. The results show that the prepared Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst had good catalytic activity. Zr introduction was carried out on this basis. The results showed that proper Zr doping improved the catalytic activity at low temperatures and widened the high-temperature stage, with an optimal activity stage at a Zr/Cu mass ratio of 0.2. The NO x conversion efficiency was close to 100% at 200 °C and over 80% at 450 °C. The active species were well dispersed on the catalyst surface, and the metal modification did not change the crystal structure of the zeolite. The NH3-TPD results showed that the Zr-modified catalyst had more abundant acid sites, and the H2-TPR results indicated that the Cu species on the catalyst had excellent reducibility at low temperatures. The interaction between Cu and Zr could regulate the Cu+ and Cu2+ proportion on the catalyst surface, which facilitated the increase in the Cu+ for fast SCR reaction at low temperatures. With abundant acid sites and both SCR reactions following the Eley-Rideal (E-R) and Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism on the catalyst surface at a low temperature of 150 °C, more abundant acid sites and reaction paths created favorable conditions for NH3-SCR reactions at low temperatures.

Abstract:Bimetallic oxide composite catalyst was designed for the urea-based SCR process. ● Surface chemical state and typical microstructure of catalyst was determined. ● Reaction route was improved based on intermediates and active site identification. ● TiO2@Al2O3 presents an obvious promotion for urea hydrolysis. As a promising option to provide gaseous NH3 for SCR system, catalytic urea hydrolysis has aroused great attention, and improving surface area and activity of catalysis are the crucial issues to be solved for efficient urea hydrolysis. Therefore, a composite metal oxide (TiO2@Al2O3) catalyst was prepared by a simple hydrothermal method, with mesoporous alumina (γ-Al2O3) as substrate. The results verify the mesoporous structure and submicron cluster of TiO2@Al2O3, with exposed crystal faces of (101) and (400) for TiO2 and γ-Al2O3, respectively. The electronegativity difference of Ti4+ and Al3+ changes the charge distribution scheme around the interface, which provides abundant acid/base sites to boost the urea hydrolysis. Consequently, for an optimal proportioning with nano TiO2 content at 10 wt.%, the hydrolysis efficiency can reach up to 35.2 % at 100 °C in 2 h, increasing by ~7.1 % than that of the blank experiment. 13C NMR spectrum measurements provide the impossible intermediate species during urea hydrolysis. Theoretical calculations are performed to clarify the efficient H2O decomposition at the interface of TiO2@Al2O3. The result offers a favorable technology for energy-efficiency urea hydrolysis.

Abstract:Based on the homemade flow reaction test platform, the thermolysis and hydrolysis process of urea and its byproducts on the Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst was studied, and the formation rule of gas-phase products in the thermolysis and hydrolysis process was systematically studied. The results show that Cu-SSZ-13 and H-SSZ-13 catalysts have a catalytic hydrolysis effect on urea as well as a slight catalytic thermolysis effect. The intermediate product isocyanate acid is mainly adsorbed on Si and Al active sites of Cu-SSZ-13, while the Cu active site does have an effect on the hydrolysis of HNCO. As a result, the overall decomposition of urea is improved by the Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst, especially at low temperature. Therefore, the Si/Al ratio of the Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst should be reasonably planned in order to make urea decompose completely and reduce the risk of urea deposition.

The combined analysis of various energy spectra techniques unveils that Y ions are mainly located in the six-membered rings (6MRs) of chabazite framework and have a strong interaction with Cu cations in 8MRs, resulting in the remarkable low-temperature NOx abatement efficiency and hydrothermal stability. Mechanism studies reveal that the interplay between Y and Cu not only enhances the electron transfer from Cu to Y ions that favors the ammonia solvation process and reduces the reaction barrier, but also inhibits the aggregation of Cu sites. This work paves the way for next generation of advanced NH3-SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Improving the low-temperature (650 °C) and high water vapor (10 vol.%). In this study, CeZrOx-Cu/SSZ-13 (CZ/CSZ) coupled catalysts were synthesized to construct additional active sites for NO oxidation on the CSZ surface, thus improving the low-temperature NOx conversion through synergistic interaction. The results reveal that when the CSZ and CZ mass ratio is 1:3, the NOx conversion at 150 °C is improved by 11% after hydrothermal treatment at 800 °C for 16 h. The coupled CZ oxidizes NO at low temperatures and generates abundant HONO species on CZ/3CSZ. These HONO species formed on CZ transfer to CSZ and rapidly react with BAS-NH3 to produce easily decomposable NH4NO2. This efficient synergistic mechanism circumvented the rate-limitation caused by Cu species, thus enhancing the low-temperature activity. Additionally, the coupled CZ obviously reduces the amount of H2O adsorption on CZ/3CSZ and effectively mitigates the damage of Si-OH-Al sites by H2O molecules during the hydrothermal treatment. The improved structural stability enables the maintenance of isolated Cu2+ and stable acid sites, ensuring the rapid response of synergistic reactions, ultimately resulting in a significantly enhanced in the low-temperature SCR activity even after the hydrothermal treatment. This work would provide a novel strategy for designing the next generation of commercial NH3-SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with similar Si/Al and Cu/Al ratios were prepared by aqueous solution ion-exchange (Cu-SSZ-13-I) and one-pot synthesis (Cu-SSZ-13-O) methods. NH3-SCR tests, XRD, BET, SEM, HRTEM, EPR, H-2-TPR, NH3-TPD, NO + O-2-TPD, in situ DRIFTS, and kinetic tests were performed for the catalytic measurement, bulk characterization and mechanism estimation. The NH3-SCR results indicated that Cu-SSZ-13-O showed higher DeNO(x) activity than Cu-SSZ-13-I in the absence or presence of H2O across the entire temperature range. The results of EPR, H-2-TPR and NO + O-2-TPD showed that more Cu2+ ions existed in Cu-SSZ-13-O, which mainly accounts for the Lewis acid sites and the majority of the NOx adsorption or activation. The DRIFTS results showed that NH3 on Lewis acid sites was more active than that on Bronsted acid sites in the NH3-SCR reaction. Furthermore, the DRIFTS results also indicated that mono-dentate nitrates are the most active nitrate species. Compared with Cu-SSZ-13-I, Cu-SSZ-13-O showed stronger Lewis acid site strengths and had more abundant monodentate nitrate species. Therefore, the NH3-SCR reaction proceeded more easily over Cu-SSZ-13-O in comparison with Cu-SSZ-13-I. This could be the key factor that explains the more excellent low-temperature SCR activity of Cu-SSZ-13-O. In addition, at low reaction temperatures, Cu-SSZ-13-O was less affected by pore (i.e., intracrystalline) diffusion limitations.
A Facile and Controllable in Situ Sulfation Strategy for CuCeZr Catalyst for NH3-SCR

Abstract:The Cu-based transition-metal-oxide catalysts were widely applied for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), but limited in practical application because of the inferior catalytic performance at high temperatures. To counter this issue, we designed a facile in situ strategy to obtain sulfated CuCeZr catalysts, on which the sulfation degree could be precisely controlled without any further post-treatment. The sulfated CuCeZr catalysts not only show broader SCR reaction temperature window and promoted N-2 selectivity, but also demonstrate satisfactory tolerance to H2O and SO2. The outcomes indicate that stronger surface acidity, weaker reducibility and excellent stability for adsorbing NH3 on the sulfated CuCeZr catalysts greatly suppress the undesired excessive oxidation of NH3 at high temperatures, which enhance the high-temperature activity and N-2 selectivity. Furthermore, the transient in situ DRIFT and steady-state kinetic studies reveal that both unsulfated and sulfated catalysts mainly follow the Eley-Rideal mechanism.

Abstract:Series of Fe/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with different Fe loading content were synthesized by simple one-pot strategy. The obtained catalysts were subjected to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 and were characterized by various techniques. The results show that Fe0.63/Cu1.50-SSZ-13 catalyst with proper Fe content exhibits excellent catalytic activity with widest operation temperature window from 160 to 580°C, excellent hydrothermal stability as well as good resistance to sulfur poisoning when compared with Cu-SSZ-13, signifying its great potential for practical applications. Further characterizations reveal that the synthesized Fe/Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts present typical chabazite (CHA) structure with good crystallinity, while isolated Cu2+ and monomeric Fe3+ are revealed as the predominant copper and iron species. At low temperatures, isolated Cu2+ species act as primary active sites for SCR reaction, while monomeric Fe3+ species provide sufficient active sites for sustain the SCR activity at high temperature. Moreover, Fe over doping would lead to the damage of zeolite structure, destruction of isolated Cu2+ site, as well as the formation of highly oxidizing Fe2O3, thus causing deterioration of catalytic performances.

Abstract:The effect of Mn impregnation on the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3) activity of in situ synthesized Cu-SSZ-13 was investigated in this work. The optimal amount of Mn was 5 wt.%, and NOx conversion was improved by more than 20% over a temperature range of 120 °C to 150 °C. SEM (scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), N2 adsorption-desorption, H2-TPR (temperature programmed reduction of H2), NH3-TPD (temperature programmed desorption of NH3) and in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) experiments were conducted to investigate the changes in the zeolite structure, active sites, acid sites and reaction mechanism. The impregnated MnOx species caused a decline in the crystallinity of Cu-SSZ-13 but markedly improved the redox ability. Nitrate and nitrite species were observed in the Mn-modified Cu-SSZ-13, and the formation of these species was thought to cause the observed increase in low-temperature NH3-SCR activity. The results show that the addition of Mn is a promising method for promoting the low-temperature catalytic activity of Cu-SSZ-13.

Abstract:Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst has excellent performance for removing NOx. In this study, the in-situ interzeolite transformation (IZT) method was proposed to prepare Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst. The coal fly ash-derived zeolite acted as a raw material rather than the chemical silicon and aluminum source. A series of catalysts were prepared using the in-situ IZT method with different ratios of the two template agents. The NO conversion of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts was above 90% within the temperature range of 200-700 °C, whereas the N2 selectivity was maintained at about 100%. The as-synthesized catalysts had higher conversion rates for Si and Al, higher copper loading and more isolated Cu2+. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction mechanisms of Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst prepared using the in-situ IZT method followed both the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism and the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, though it was mainly based on the E-R reaction. In this study, the Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts were synthesized using coal fly ash based zeolite in one step. This study further improved the synthesis process route from coal based solid waste to SCR catalyst, shortened the preparation cycle, and improved catalyst performance.

Abstract:To reveal the role of SO3 poisoning in Cu/SSZ-13 NH3-SCR catalysts, fresh and sulfated Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts were prepared in the presence or absence of SO3 flux. The deactivation mechanism is probed by the changes of structural, copper species, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity. The variations concentrate on the changes of copper species as the Chabazite (CHA) framework of Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts could keep intact at high ratios of SO3/SOx. The thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) results reveal that the copper sulfate formed during sulfation and the amounts of sulfate species increased with an increase in the SO3/SOx ratio. In contrast to the changing trend of copper sulfate, temperature program reduction (H2-TPR), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results manifest that, since the number of active copper ions declines with an increase of the SO3/SOx ratio, the active sites transform to these inactive species during sulfation. Due to the combination of NH3-SCR activity and the kinetic tests, it is shown that the decreased number of active sites is responsible for the declined SCR activity at low temperature. As Cu/SSZ-13 catalysts show excellent acid-resistance ability, our study reveals that the Cu/SSZ-13 catalyst is a good candidate for NOx elimination, especially when SO3 exists.

Abstract:In this paper, Cu-exchanged SSZ-13, SAPO-18, and SAPO-34 were synthesized via a novel green and sustainable solid-state ion-exchange (SSIE) route with excellent NH3-SCR activities, which could simplify the preparation process and reduce the wastewater production in comparison to conventional aqueous ion-exchange route. The results also proved that Cu-exchanged zeolites synthesized by SSIE technology presented higher Cu ion-exchange (IE) levels and better SCR activities than those prepared via the traditional incipient impregnation route. In the case of SSIE, the usage of NH4-form substrates could achieve more Cu2+ ions and fewer CuOx than those H-form substrates since the formation of Cu(NH3)x2+ intermediate could promote the Cu2+ mobility to facilitate Cu2+ occupying IE sites, which was favorable for the SCR reaction. The combined DFT data confirmed the SSIE reaction energy barriers between Cu(NO3)2 and the NH4-form substrates were almost identical, whereas the higher reaction energy was required for H-form substrates. In-situ DRIFTS results manifested the labile species like NH4+, –NH2, NO2–, NO3–, NO2, etc were the reaction intermediates over the catalysts prepared from NH4-form substrates. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood ("L-H") and Eley-Rideal ("E-R") mechanisms contributed collectively over both Cu-SSZ-13 and Cu-SAPO-18 in the SCR reaction, however, the "L-H" mechanism dominated over Cu-SAPO-34.
