Abstract:Despite extensive research on the photoluminescent properties of Bi3+ ions, the origins of their emission and excitation bands remain elusive. Herein, we present a comprehensive analysis of the photoluminescent properties of Bi3+-activated LuXnGaO4 (Xn = Mg, Zn), elucidating the underlying factors governing the intra-ionic and extra-ionic electronic transitions. By integrating crystal structure data and spectroscopic data analysis with semi-empirical formula calculations, the origins of excitation and emission states were elucidated. Moreover, the impact of alterations in chemical surroundings on the luminescence of Bi3+ was investigated. LuXnGaO4:Bi3+ phosphors both exhibit three excitation peaks in near ultraviolet region and display a broadband yellow emission. However, the luminous behavior of LuMgGaO4:Bi3+ and LuZnGaO4:Bi3+ differs due to variations in bandgap, bond length and neighboring atoms. It is anticipated that the investigation of Bi3+-activated gallates presents a promising avenue for advancing wide-band and long-wavelength emitting phosphors.

Upon the ultraviolet light excitation, SrLaGa3O7:Bi3+ phosphors yield broadband emission in 380-600 nm relating to the 3P1 & RARR;1S0 transitions of Bi3+. The full width of the half-maximum of emission band reaches ~130 nm. Tunable light was achieved by adjusting the content of Bi3+ or changing the excitation wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, cyan BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction method at 1400 °C. The crystal structure, elemental composition and optical properties were characterized and studied. The results of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy indicate the successful synthesis of BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors with the pure phase. The BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors show wide band emission corresponding to the 3P1→1S0 transition of Bi3+ when excited at 328 nm.

Abstract:A series of Bi3+ ion doped Ln2O3 (Ln = Lu, Gd, La) phosphors have been prepared through a simple urea-based precipitation method. The 1S0 → 3P1 transition position shift of Bi3+ ion has been investigated in Bi3+-doped Ln2O3 phosphors. This is caused by difference of covalency and coordination number. The 1S0 → 3P1 transition of Bi3+ ion in Gd2O3 crystal shifts to lower energy position than that in Lu2O3 crystal for the same site due to the larger radius of Gd3+ ion compared to Lu3+ ion. However, the 1S0 → 3P1 transition of Bi3+ ion shifts to higher energy position owing to the increase of coordination number from cubic phase Lu2O3 and Gd2O3 crystals to hexagonal phase La2O3 crystal. Our work provides a reference to achieve various photoluminesence performances of Bi3+ ion doped oxides.

Abstract:In this work, a tunable luminescence color from yellow to orange of photoluminescence (PL), long persistent luminescence (LPL), and photostimulated luminescence (PSL) is successfully achieved in BaGa2O4:Bi3+ phosphors with the introduction of Sr2+ ions as secondary cations. It is confirmed that broad-band emissions located at 500 and 600 nm originate from the occupation of Bi3+ ions at different lattice sites in the BaGa2O4 host matrix. The replacement of Sr2+ for Ba2+ ions makes the emission red-shift from 600 to 650 nm; moreover, two additional emissions appeare at 743 and 810 nm due to the occupational preference of Bi3+ ions at Ga3+ sites. Furthermore, the doped Sr2+ ions promote the reconstruction of the trapping centers, which conduces to the fundamental improvement of the optical storage capacity behavior of Bi3+-doped phosphors. Abstract:A series of Bi3+ based blue long afterglow phosphor Ca14Ga10Zn6O35:Bi3+ were successfully synthesized via solid state reaction method. Under ultraviolet excitation of the samples, a blue emission originated from 3P1 -> 1S0 transition of Bi3+engendered a broadband from 380 to 600 nm with peak at around 432 nm. The peak positions of the emission curves have experienced a slight red shift from 432 to 442 nm when the concentrations of Bi3+ were increased from 0.1 % to 1.5 %. After excitation stopped, the persistent luminescence from Bi3+ ions could last more than half an hour. The afterglow duration times were shortened remarkably with the increasing concentration of Bi3+, from several thousand seconds to several hundred seconds, along with decreased afterglow intensity. With the alkaline metals Li+ and Na+ co-doped to provide charge compensation, the emission intensity of Bi3+ ions was increased, together with compensated by the shortened persistent time. A series of thermoluminescence glow curves of 0.1 % Bi3+ doped sample were measured with different delay times to detect the population dynamics of traps. With the systematical experimental results, a reasonable model was proposed to illuminate the mechanism of the emission and persistent phenomenon of this promising novel Bi3+ based blue long afterglow phosphor.

Abstract:In this study, a novel blue-emitting phosphors, Gd7O6(BO3) (PO4)2: Bi3+, has been successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method, and first-principles calculations, microscopic structures, and optical properties of these phosphors were studied. The bandgap and density of states in both the undoped and doped states by implementing the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package were also investigated. The obtained results indicated that the introduction of Bi3+ dopants led to a reduction in the bandgap value, as ascertained through data analysis. Based on the spectroscopic analysis, it can be inferred that the material A manifests a Stoke shift of 10,073 cm−1 and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 87 nm. The thermal stability of the spectrum indicates a slight blue shift with increasing temperature, accompanied by a small increase in FWHM. Based on the fluorescence lifetime analysis, it has been revealed that there is a reduction in the fluorescence lifetime with the escalation of the doping concentration. The CIE diagram displays that all the samples at different concentrations are placed in the blue region and primarily converge at a single point.

Abstract:This article describes a new kind of afterglow material, ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+, which was synthesized through a high-temperature solid-phase method. Its crystal structure, photoluminescent characteristics, and afterglow characteristics were studied and analyzed. Upon excitation at 344 nm, ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ exhibits broadband emission with a central wavelength located at 571 nm (fwhm = 172.98 nm). The sample exhibits an internal quantum efficiency of 65.1%. The bright yellow persistent luminescence of the ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ sample was observed after 365 nm irradiation. Thermoluminescence spectroscopy revealed four primary traps within ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+, with depths of 0.676, 0.794, 0.882, and 0.972 eV. The traps located at energy levels of 0.676 and 0.794 eV were identified as the key contributors to the sample's afterglow. Finally, the ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ sample was combined with a UV-LED chip to fabricate a high-power warm white-light-emitting diode (WLED) device, indicating the potential application prospect of ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ phosphor in single-phase warm WLEDs.

Abstract:In this research, a series of La1- x B3O6: xDy3+ phosphors were synthesized for white light-emitting diode applications using the high-temperature solid-state method. The LaB3O6 structure and XRD of prepared samples were analyzed. Under 350 nm excitation, La1- x B3O6: xDy3+ phosphors can emit white light consist of blue (4F9/2→6H15/2) and yellow (4F9/2→6H13/2) light. The optimal doping concentration of Dy3+ is 0.02. The typical sample La0.98B3O6: 0.02Dy3+ with excellent thermal stability (integral emission intensity maintained at 51% of that at room temperature) was confirmed, and the activation energy was calculated to be 0.203 eV. The CIE coordinates of La0.98B3O6: 0.02Dy3+ is calculated as (0.313, 0.339), which is close to ideal white light. The research results indicate that La1- x B3O6: xDy3+ phosphors are promising candidate w-LEDs excited by ultraviolet light.

Abstract:We report a new Ba2Ga2GeO7:Bi3+ phosphor with broad emission almost covers the entire visible area generated from different bismuth emission centers in crystalline structure. The two peaks' positions are invariably located at 497 and 611 nm which were independently excited by 365 and 387 nm excitation sources. As the emission tightly relies on the excitation source in an extremely wide range (260-470 nm), the emission color can be easily manipulated from cyan to red. The WLEDs devices with R-a = 90.40 and 91.98 were fabricated by employing Ba2Ga2GeO7:0.012Bi(3+) as a red component phosphor. Through analyzing, we found P2 (Ga/Ge) sites tend to form vacancies in the sintering process. When bismuth concentration is set fixed, the luminescent intensity is quite dependent on the quantity of Ga or Ge vacancies which are beneficial to form Bi3+ emission centers and provide a fresh idea for structural micromodulation. Our results also provide new insights for understanding the roles of the vacancy played in phosphors.

Abstract:The blue-green emitting La2MgZr1-x SnxO6: 0.02Bi3+ (x = 0–1, abbreviated as LMZ: Bi3+, xSn4+) phosphors with a double-perovskite structure were prepared through a conventional high-temperature solid-state method. A complex ionic substitution phenomenon of selective occupation of Bi3+ in the host of LMZ was observed with Sn4+ doping which was explained on the basis of Rietveld refinement, density functional theory (DFT) calculation and UV–vis spectroscopy results. Fluorescence spectrum analysis showed that LMZ: 0.02Bi3+ emitted a broad green light band with a range of 375–650 nm. With the increase of the Sn4+ concentration replacing Zr4+, the intensity of green light was firstly enhanced and then gradually decreases until disappeared. The emission peak of blue light appears near 400 nm and then its intensity gradually increased. Through Gaussian deconvolution and fluorescence decay curve, it was found that there were two luminescence centers in LMZ: 0.02Bi3+, and three luminescence centers in LMZ: 0.02Bi3+,0.6Sn4+, respectively, which were determined by the Van Uitert empirical formula combined with the energy level splitting theory. The above results demonstrate that how to tune emission color by the substitution of B-site in double perovskite phosphors, which is attractive for future applications.

Abstract:A series of Eu3+/Bi3+ single and co-doped La2MgSnO6 phosphors are synthesized by the solid-state method. The crystal structure, optical properties, energy transfer processes, and thermal stability of phosphors are investigated systematically. Under 331 nm excitation, both the orange-red emission of Eu3+ ions ranging from 500 to 750 nm and the blue emission band centered at 403 nm are observed in the La2MgSnO6:Eu3+, Bi3+ samples. With the doping concentration of Eu3+ changing, the emission of La2MgSnO6:Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphors can be adjusted from blue (0.219, 0.350) to orange-red light (0.644, 0.341) in chromaticity coordinate. Furthermore, the security ink prepared by phosphors can be effectively used for encryption writing and anti-counterfeit marking. Additionally, the latent fingerprint developed using La2MgSnO6: Eu3+, Bi3+ phosphor demonstrates excellent contrast and sensitivity.

Abstract:For phosphor-converted white LEDs (pc-WLEDs) based on UV chips, it is essential to search for highly efficient phosphors that have broadly tunable emissions and minimal excitation in the visible range. This would allow the designer of pc-WLEDs to select the desirable emission wavelength and, thereby, fabricate the device with color perception comfortable for the human eye. Conventional rare earth schemes, for instance Ce3+ or Eu2+ doped phosphors, can be tuned in emission wavelengths, but they cannot overcome the severe intrinsic excitation in the range from blue to green. We report here that Bi3+, the valence of which is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectra, exhibits almost no excitation in the visible range and has an extremely broad emission covering the full visible spectral range with internal quantum efficiency up to 75% when substituted into the solid solution compounds (Y,Lu,Sc) VO4:Bi. When the crystal field around Bi3+ is tuned by gradual substitution of smaller lanthanide ions for larger lanthanide ions in solid solution, the emission peak position can be modulated linearly between 566 nm and 635 nm due to the susceptibility of bismuth naked 6s electrons to the local environment. In accordance with Rietveld refining results, static and transient photoluminescence spectra reveal the existence of a single type of Bi3+ emission center in the sample, and energy transfer from VO43- group to Bi3+ upon excitation into the charge transfer state of VO43- groups. The mechanism of concentration quenching of Bi3+ emission occurs possibly due to dipole-quadrupole rather than exchange interactions. This work shows the potential application of bismuth doped samples in UV converted pc-WLEDs.

Abstract:Series of Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+-doped SrLa2Sc2O7:Bi3+ (SLSO: Bi3+) were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state method, and the energy transfer of Bi3+→Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+ was observed. Under ultraviolet radiation, a 550 nm emission peak was observed, which is attributed to Bi3+ occupying the Sr2+/La3+ sites. Additionally, the other peaks were found to be 615, 707, and 980 nm, which are assigned to the Re3+ (Eu3+ and Yb3+) and Mn4+ occupying two different cationic sites. An obvious energy transfer (ET) from Bi3+ to Eu3+/Mn4+/Yb3+ was observed, and the tunable color, emitting from yellow to red, was obtained; the ET efficiency was about 86.2%, 78.6%, and 27.5% in SLSO, respectively. We found that the large overlap area between the emission spectrum of the sensitizer and the excitation spectrum of the activator could produce efficient energy transfer, which provided the idea for designing experiments in the future for some highly efficient energy transfer processes.
