Abstract:In recent years, Bi3+ activated phosphors have received a lot of attention from researchers; however, the performance and application areas of phosphors are yet to be developed. In this work, a series of CaScBO4(CSBO):xBi3+ phosphors were successfully prepared using a high-temperature solid-state method. Under UV excitation, blue light emission was achieved at 430 nm with a quantum yield of 91%, and at 423 K, the emission intensity retained 82.8% of the original intensity at 298 K. By crystal field engineering, the substitution of Sr2+ at the Ca2+ site enhances the temperature stability of the material, and at 423 K, 473 K and 573 K, the samples maintain 104%, 103% and 85% of the emission intensity at room temperature, respectively. It indicates that the cation substitution causes the increase in the oxygen vacancy concentration, and the oxygen vacancy defect compensates the energy lost in electrons at high temperature, producing resistance to anti-TQ performance. Finally, a blue-violet LED was fabricated by using the phosphor and an ultraviolet LED chip, and white LEDs (CCT = 4683 K, Ra = 89.7) were obtained by co-packaging this phosphor with commercial phosphors and a UV chip. Importantly, the great potential of this phosphor in the field of plant lighting and biocontrol can be demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Bi3+-activated Ca2LuZrScAl2GeO12 (CLZSAG) phosphor with a garnet structure was prepared by the high temperature solid-state method. There are two kinds of luminescent centers in CLZSAG:Bi3+ phosphor, which give a blue emission under 365 nm excitation and a rare near-ultraviolet emission with a narrow band (FWHM=34 nm) under 290 nm excitation. The combination of structure and luminescence reveals that the Bi3+ ions occupy the sites of the LuO8 and ScO6 polyhedrons with different local coordination environments, leading to the two different luminescence behaviors. In addition, the prepared phosphors also have excellent thermostability (I423 K/298 K = 80%), and high quantum efficiency of 72% and 60% under 290 and 365 nm excitation, respectively. Since the absorption band of the phosphor in the UV-visible region can match well with the commercial 365 nm chips, a high-performance WLED device with a high color rendering index (Ra=98.5) and low correlated color temperature (CCT=4455 K) was obtained by combining commercial phosphors Lu-YAG:Ce3+, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ and samples of CLZSAG:Bi3+ phosphor with 365 nm chips. Our results demonstrate the CLZSAG:Bi3+ has great potential application in WLED device.

Abstract:Developing innovative efficient phosphors featured with a narrow-band emission is essential for present white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) towards high-performance liquid-crystal display (LCD) backlights applications, especially for Bi3+-activated phosphors. Herein, we synthesized a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) excitable narrow-band blue-emitting Ba3Lu2B6O15:Bi3+ (BLB:Bi3+) phosphor. It exhibits a narrow band emission (full-width at half maximum, FWHM = 35.5 nm), high color purity of 97.76%, surprisingly high internal quantum efficiency (IQE) which reached up to 90.6%, excellent thermal stability (85%@150 degrees C of the integrated emission intensity at room temperature) and reversibility and high consistency. The outstanding photoluminescence properties of Bi3+ are attributed to a highly symmetrical crystal field environment and tightly connected polyhedral network of Ba3Lu2B6O15. In addition, the energy level scheme is constructed from the calculated electronic structure to explore the difference in luminescence stability of Ce and Bi doped BLB phosphors. The pc-wLED device fabricated using commercial green beta-Sialon:Eu2+, red K2SiF6:Mn4+, and as-prepared blue BLB:Bi3+ phosphor on a 365 nm n-UV chip covered 90.06% of the color space of National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard, suggesting great potential for industrial applications as LCD backlighting.

Abstract:For white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), comparing with the method of yellow-emitting Y3Al5O12: Ce3+ phosphor pumped by a blue LED chip, tricolor phosphors combined with near-ultraviolet (n-UV) LED chip have been regarded as a better candidate to improve the output-light performances and avoid the severe blue-light hazard. Yet, the high-grade phosphors with strong absorption in the n-UV region, high efficiency and thermal stability are extremely scarce. Inspired by mineral prototype strategy and substitution engineering, a novel Eu2+-doped Na3KMg6ZnP6O24 phosphor has been desired and developed for the first time. Its crystal structure, luminescent properties, potential application for WLEDs and cathodoluminescent properties have been studied systematically. The phosphor shows strong response to the irradiation of n-UV light and emits bright blue light peaking at 444 nm with a FWHM of 53 nm. The optimal Na3KMg6ZnP6O24: 0.02Eu2+ sample has a high quantum efficiency of 90.2%. Interestingly, the phosphor displays zero-thermal quenching behavior, which is extremely required for high-power WLEDs. The fabricated WLED lamp can exhibit superior electroluminescence properties by using the as-prepared Na3KMg6ZnP6O24: Eu2+ phosphor as a blue-emitting component. Furthermore, the phosphor can generate stable blue light under the bombardment of electron beam. All the results suggest that the obtained phosphor can be promising in developing both WLEDs and FEDs. This work provides a new insight to desire novel luminescent materials with excellent performances.

Abstract:Bi3+ doped Ca12Al14O32Cl2 series were successfully synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction method and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with cubic space group I-43d were obtained by XRD refinement as a=12.0183(3)Å and V (cell volume)=1735.93(1)Å3. The resulting phosphors absorb ultraviolet (UV) light (240–400nm) and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 400–600nm with maximum intensity at 483nm. The Commission Internationale de 1’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are about x=0.185, y=0.306. Thus, the novel light blue-emitting phosphor Ca12Al14O32Cl2:Bi3+ could be potentially applied in UV white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Thermal quenching is still a pivotal challenge for phosphor materials in white light emitting diodes lighting applications. Herein, we propose an effective strategy to design a near zero-thermal-quenching green emission in zero-thermal-expanding Zn4B6O13 host based on unique 3D isotropic cage structure. The integrated emission intensity of Zn4B6O13:Mn2+ could maintain 103% of initial intensity at 150 degrees C and 98% at 250 degrees C under blue light excitation. During the low-frequency vibrations, the unchanged bonds and angles induce the zero thermal expansion, and the unaffected lattice and coordination environment contribute the nearly unchanged emission intensity during the heating process. In addition, an efficient self-reduction of activators in the studied system is ascribed to vacancy and interstitial oxygen defects act as donors to provide electrons. This work initiates a novel strategy to construct thermally-stable and self-reductive phosphors for multiple optical applications.

Abstract:The design of phosphors simultaneously having excellent quantum efficiency, ultra-narrow emission band and zero thermal quenching is yet a big challenge. Herein, we report a blue-emitting K2SrBa(PO4)2:xEu2+ phosphor with ultra-narrow emission peaked at 425 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 37 nm (2088 cm−1), high color purity (0.93), together with superior thermal stability and quantum efficiency. This phosphor displays an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 75.3%, exceeding those of blue phosphors reported thus far. It also has excellent thermal stability showing near zero thermal quenching up to 300 °C, retaining 102%, 100% and 96% of its initial integrated emission intensity at 75, 200 and 300 °C, respectively. Rietveld refinements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Eu2+ ions preferentially occupy the Sr/Ba sites, rather than the K sites, of the host structure, contributing to the superior photoluminescence properties. The as-developed phosphors can be potentially applied in the phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) for applications such as high-power lighting and backlight display.

Preparation and Luminescence Properties of Broadband Orange-Emitting Persistent ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ Phosphor

Abstract:This article describes a new kind of afterglow material, ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+, which was synthesized through a high-temperature solid-phase method. Its crystal structure, photoluminescent characteristics, and afterglow characteristics were studied and analyzed. Upon excitation at 344 nm, ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ exhibits broadband emission with a central wavelength located at 571 nm (fwhm = 172.98 nm). The sample exhibits an internal quantum efficiency of 65.1%. The bright yellow persistent luminescence of the ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ sample was observed after 365 nm irradiation. Thermoluminescence spectroscopy revealed four primary traps within ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+, with depths of 0.676, 0.794, 0.882, and 0.972 eV. The traps located at energy levels of 0.676 and 0.794 eV were identified as the key contributors to the sample's afterglow. Finally, the ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ sample was combined with a UV-LED chip to fabricate a high-power warm white-light-emitting diode (WLED) device, indicating the potential application prospect of ScBaZn3GaO7:Bi3+ phosphor in single-phase warm WLEDs.
The pure-phase Ba3−xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+ green phosphor: synthesis, photoluminescence and thermal properties

Abstract:The promising green oxynitride phosphor, Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+, was synthesized at 1350 degrees C for 5 hours under a reducing N-2/H-2 (5%) atmosphere via the solid-state reaction method. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of the pure phase of Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+. With an increase in x, the emission spectra shift from 525 nm to 536 nm under near-UV (n-UV) excitation. Accordingly, we propose the underlying mechanisms for the red-shift of the emission spectra by adjusting the cation composition in the host. The influence of the size mismatch on the thermal quenching is also observed. The as-prepared green phosphor exhibits great thermal quenching property, with the remaining 83% of the initial emission intensity measured at 150 degrees C. The quantum efficiency is measured to be 35.2%. All the results indicate that the Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+ can be a good candidate phosphor applicable to n-UV light-emitting diodes for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:The narrow band phosphors with excellent thermal stability have received growing attention from academic and industrial researchers. In this work, a novel Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor was prepared via solid phase reaction. Their crystal structure, phase composition, morphology and optical performance containing photoluminescence (PL) emission, PL excitation and temperature-dependence PL spectra were systematically analyzed. Compared with commercial BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ blue phosphor, the as-obtained Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor displays a narrower band blue emission (λem = 440 nm) with a full width at half maximum of 32 nm under the near ultraviolet light excitation and an excellent thermal stability for 83.3% of the initial intensity at 150 °C. The quantum yield of the Ba4.98Eu0.02SiO4Cl6 phosphors was estimated to be as high as 57.2%. Finally, a LED device coupling UV-chip (400 nm) with Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+, (Sr, Ba)2SiO4: Eu2+, (Sr, Ca)AlSiN3: Eu2+ phosphors display attractive optical performance with LE = 45 lm/W, CCT = 3407 K and Ra = 94. Therefore, there are good reasons for believing that the Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor will be a market prospect phosphor for the application of lighting and display.
Narrow-Band Deep-Blue Emission and Superior Thermal Stability of Fluoroaluminate Phosphor Based on Tungsten Bronze-Type Mineral Structure

Abstract:Screening novel narrow-band phosphors inspired by natural mineral structures is urgently demanded for improving the performance of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes. In this work, a novel narrow-band deep-blue-emitting tungsten bronze-type KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor with superior thermal stability is successfully synthesized. Structural analysis shows that the representative KCaAl2F9:0.013Eu2+ phosphor crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group C2221 with a rigid network. The rigid [AlF6]3- octahedrons are linked together by sharing corners to build endless [AlF6]3-∞ chains, further stacking with each other in a highly cross-linked way to establish the rigid network of the KCaAl2F9 host. Benefiting from the rigid microenvironment, the developed phosphor not only shows a narrow-band deep-blue emission with a full width at half maximum of 45 nm and a high color purity of 92%, but it also exhibits the superior thermal stability with an emission loss of only 10% at 423 K, demonstrating its application potential in bridging the deep-blue spectral cavity toward sunlight-like full-spectrum lighting. In addition, the concentration/temperature quenching behaviors of KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor are systematically investigated. By revealing the specific structure-property relationship of tungsten bronze-type KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor, the present study provides a significant guide for identifying the novel narrow-band deep-blue-emitting component applicable to full-spectrum warm white light-emitting diode devices.

Abstract:Bi3+ has gained increasing attention due to its abundant reserves, adjustable luminous colour and high chemical stability, therefore, Bi3+-activated luminescent materials have already been extensively applied in various fields. Herein, a novel blue-emitting CaNaSb2O6F:Bi3+ (CNSOF:Bi3+) phosphor with a pyrochlore-type structure with the space group Fd3̄m (277) was successfully synthesized. It exhibits a broad absorption band in the n-UV region (290-390 nm) and an ideal blue emission band centered at 441 nm. Interestingly, the wide emission peak of CNSOF:Bi3+ shows strongly temperature-dependent fluorescence properties and good thermal degradation resistance in the cycle temperature range from 298 K to 473 K, and the relative sensitivity is calculated to reach the maximum value of 2.34% K-1 at 423 K. Besides, the phosphor is different from a traditional optical temperature sensing material which shows the emission peak of trivalent rare earth ions. The wide emission peak makes the instrument insensitive to the peak shift, which dramatically reduces the requirement of the instrument, and the emission peak does not shift with the temperature to enhance the measurement stability, thus saving the cost. These results indicate that the CNSOF:Bi3+ blue emitting phosphor has potential applications in temperature sensing.

Abstract:In order to obtain white light, based on near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip needs highly efficient red, green and blue phosphor. The popular commercial blue phosphor is BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ (BAM:Eu2+). However, BAM:Eu2+ is unstable at high temperature and the excitation band of BAM:Eu2+ couldn't match well with n-UV (380–420 nm) chips. Therefore, the development of new blue phosphor is important. In our work, a novel Eu2+ doped Na2HfSi2O7 phosphor is successfully synthesized through the high-temperature solid-state method. Na2HfSi2O7:Eu2+ shows a strong wide absorption band peaking at 397 nm, covering the spectral scope from 250 to 450 nm on account of the 4f7 → 4f65 d1 transitions of Eu2+ ions. Under the optical excitation, The phosphor exhibits an asymmetric narrow-band emission centered at 460 nm with FWHM of 54 nm. Owing to the characteristics of wide-excitation and narrow-band emission, Na2HfSi2O7:Eu2+ is a promising candidate for n-UV WLED.

Strategy for developing thermal-quenching-resistant emitting and super-long persistent luminescence in BaGa2O4:Bi3+

Abstract:We report a novel orange-emitting phosphor BaGa2O4:0.02Bi(3+) with ultra-broadband emission and a large Stokes shift (1.88 eV). Its crystal structure, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, thermoluminescence (TL) spectra and long persistent luminescence (LPL) were investigated. The Bi3+ emission centers located at different six-membered rings are responsible for the asymmetric broadband PL spectra peaking at 638 nm. The integrated PL intensity of the phosphor at 200 degrees C still maintains 93.6%, 88.1% and 174.0% of the one at room temperature upon 310, 325 and 365 nm excitation due to the compensating emission losses of the phosphor with increasing temperature. Also, commendable LPL can be observed by the naked eye for 7 days and detected using a spectrofluorometer for 25 days in the dark after the stoppage of the 254 nm excitation. Both the unusual resistance to thermal quenching and super long LPL properties rely on the capture and release processes of the charge carriers in the traps. Finally, a white light emitting diode (WLED) with high Ra(>90) was obtained by combining the BaGa2O4:0.02Bi(3+) phosphor with a UV-LED chip. Our concept of exploiting phosphors may open a gateway for discovering new multifunctional phosphors with excellent PL and LPL properties.

Abstract:Cs2SnCl6 perovskite has recently attracted attention as a promising optoelectronic material owing to its better stability and reduced toxicity than its lead counterparts. However, its luminescence performance hardly satisfies the requirements. Hence, a series of Bi3+-doped Cs2SnCl6 (Cs2SnCl6:Bi3+) with enhanced luminescence were synthesized by a solution-phase route. The results show that the initial concentration of Sn2+ can adjust the nucleation density and the quality of the crystal nucleus growth, which will affect the Bi3+ doping amount, crystal morphology, and photophysical properties of Cs2SnCl6:Bi3+. Cs2SnCl6:Bi3+ shows excellent stability in the atmosphere with a photoluminescence (PL) of around 456 nm and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 31%. The luminescence performance results from [BiSn4+ 3+ + VCl] defects caused by the Bi3+ doping. The blue LED based on the Cs2SnCl6:Bi3+ phosphor exhibits a long life of about 120 h and a Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.14, 0.11). This work demonstrates a strategy for Bi-doped perovskites with good stability. This investigation will facilitate the development of Cs2SnCl6:Bi3+ for blue LED applications.
Bismuth Activated Blue Phosphor with High Absorption Efficiency for White LEDs

Abstract:Trivalent bismuth (Bi3+) activated blue-emitting materials have attracted considerable attention because they effectively avoid the reabsorption demerits compared to traditional rare earth activators. Unfortunately, these materials are often plagued by mismatch to the near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip and short blue emission peak as well as low n-UV absorption efficiency. In this work, we successfully designed a blue-emitting phosphor SrZnSO:Bi3+ with a wide n-UV excitation band ranging from 310 to 400 nm and an ideal blue emission band centered at 460 nm. Furthermore, SrZnSO:0.03Bi(3+) phosphor exhibits an extraordinary absorption efficiency of 73.21% ascribed to the intense absorption of the matrix and Bi3+ in the n-UV region. The relationship between the excitation peak position of Bi3+-related phosphors and the size of the poly-hedron were also summarized. A white light-emitting diode (WLED) was fabricated using a 370 nm n-UV chip, the composition-optimized sample SrZnSO:0.03Bi(3+) and the commercial phosphors. Interestingly, the temperature-sensitive luminescence behavior is beneficial to the performance improvement of the WLED. The WLED demonstrates a warm white light whose Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates are (0.3817, 0.3885), outstanding color rendering index of 93.4 and low correlated color temperature of 4051 K at current of 80 mA. The study suggests that SrZnSO:Bi3+ blue emitting phosphor has great potential in LED-based applications. Also inspires researchers to explore Bi3+-related phosphors with low energy excitation band and high absorption efficiency to develop high-quality n-UV pumped WLEDs. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V.
