Abstract:For white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), comparing with the method of yellow-emitting Y3Al5O12: Ce3+ phosphor pumped by a blue LED chip, tricolor phosphors combined with near-ultraviolet (n-UV) LED chip have been regarded as a better candidate to improve the output-light performances and avoid the severe blue-light hazard. Yet, the high-grade phosphors with strong absorption in the n-UV region, high efficiency and thermal stability are extremely scarce. Inspired by mineral prototype strategy and substitution engineering, a novel Eu2+-doped Na3KMg6ZnP6O24 phosphor has been desired and developed for the first time. Its crystal structure, luminescent properties, potential application for WLEDs and cathodoluminescent properties have been studied systematically. The phosphor shows strong response to the irradiation of n-UV light and emits bright blue light peaking at 444 nm with a FWHM of 53 nm. The optimal Na3KMg6ZnP6O24: 0.02Eu2+ sample has a high quantum efficiency of 90.2%. Interestingly, the phosphor displays zero-thermal quenching behavior, which is extremely required for high-power WLEDs. The fabricated WLED lamp can exhibit superior electroluminescence properties by using the as-prepared Na3KMg6ZnP6O24: Eu2+ phosphor as a blue-emitting component. Furthermore, the phosphor can generate stable blue light under the bombardment of electron beam. All the results suggest that the obtained phosphor can be promising in developing both WLEDs and FEDs. This work provides a new insight to desire novel luminescent materials with excellent performances.

Abstract:The design of phosphors simultaneously having excellent quantum efficiency, ultra-narrow emission band and zero thermal quenching is yet a big challenge. Herein, we report a blue-emitting K2SrBa(PO4)2:xEu2+ phosphor with ultra-narrow emission peaked at 425 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 37 nm (2088 cm−1), high color purity (0.93), together with superior thermal stability and quantum efficiency. This phosphor displays an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 75.3%, exceeding those of blue phosphors reported thus far. It also has excellent thermal stability showing near zero thermal quenching up to 300 °C, retaining 102%, 100% and 96% of its initial integrated emission intensity at 75, 200 and 300 °C, respectively. Rietveld refinements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the Eu2+ ions preferentially occupy the Sr/Ba sites, rather than the K sites, of the host structure, contributing to the superior photoluminescence properties. The as-developed phosphors can be potentially applied in the phosphor-converted white light emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) for applications such as high-power lighting and backlight display.

Abstract:In order to obtain white light, based on near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip needs highly efficient red, green and blue phosphor. The popular commercial blue phosphor is BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ (BAM:Eu2+). However, BAM:Eu2+ is unstable at high temperature and the excitation band of BAM:Eu2+ couldn't match well with n-UV (380–420 nm) chips. Therefore, the development of new blue phosphor is important. In our work, a novel Eu2+ doped Na2HfSi2O7 phosphor is successfully synthesized through the high-temperature solid-state method. Na2HfSi2O7:Eu2+ shows a strong wide absorption band peaking at 397 nm, covering the spectral scope from 250 to 450 nm on account of the 4f7 → 4f65 d1 transitions of Eu2+ ions. Under the optical excitation, The phosphor exhibits an asymmetric narrow-band emission centered at 460 nm with FWHM of 54 nm. Owing to the characteristics of wide-excitation and narrow-band emission, Na2HfSi2O7:Eu2+ is a promising candidate for n-UV WLED.

Abstract:Human-centric lighting can reduce the proportion of harmful short-wave blue light, relieve visual fatigue, and regulate the normal physiological rhythm of human beings. However, the development of healthy lighting is stringently restricted because few blue phosphors can be efficiently pumped by violet LED chip (395 nm ~ 405 nm). Herein, we have developed a blue-emitting phosphor Sr 1.91 Mg 0.66 Al 22.33 O 36 : Eu 2+ with high internal quantum efficiency under 395 nm excitation, which contains more cyan and less blue components. Surprisingly, the material shows zero-thermal-quenching even when the temperature is as high as 200 o C. The defects related thermal quenching mechanism was demonstrated through thermoluminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Moreover, the phosphors exhibit good long-term stability when they exposed to air for 2.5 years. Finally, a blue light weakened warm white light-emitting diode (WLED) has been achieved by packaging commercial phosphors and Sr 1.91 Mg 0.66 Al 22.33 O 36 : Eu 2+ on a 395 nm LED chip, with a low correlated color temperature of 3919 K and high color index of 90.2. All results indicate that the Sr 1.91 Mg 0.66 Al 22.33 O 36 : Eu 2+ phosphor has the ability to promote sustainable and human-centered lighting.

Abstract:In recent years, Bi3+ activated phosphors have received a lot of attention from researchers; however, the performance and application areas of phosphors are yet to be developed. In this work, a series of CaScBO4(CSBO):xBi3+ phosphors were successfully prepared using a high-temperature solid-state method. Under UV excitation, blue light emission was achieved at 430 nm with a quantum yield of 91%, and at 423 K, the emission intensity retained 82.8% of the original intensity at 298 K. By crystal field engineering, the substitution of Sr2+ at the Ca2+ site enhances the temperature stability of the material, and at 423 K, 473 K and 573 K, the samples maintain 104%, 103% and 85% of the emission intensity at room temperature, respectively. It indicates that the cation substitution causes the increase in the oxygen vacancy concentration, and the oxygen vacancy defect compensates the energy lost in electrons at high temperature, producing resistance to anti-TQ performance. Finally, a blue-violet LED was fabricated by using the phosphor and an ultraviolet LED chip, and white LEDs (CCT = 4683 K, Ra = 89.7) were obtained by co-packaging this phosphor with commercial phosphors and a UV chip. Importantly, the great potential of this phosphor in the field of plant lighting and biocontrol can be demonstrated.
Narrow-Band Deep-Blue Emission and Superior Thermal Stability of Fluoroaluminate Phosphor Based on Tungsten Bronze-Type Mineral Structure

Abstract:Screening novel narrow-band phosphors inspired by natural mineral structures is urgently demanded for improving the performance of phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes. In this work, a novel narrow-band deep-blue-emitting tungsten bronze-type KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor with superior thermal stability is successfully synthesized. Structural analysis shows that the representative KCaAl2F9:0.013Eu2+ phosphor crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group C2221 with a rigid network. The rigid [AlF6]3- octahedrons are linked together by sharing corners to build endless [AlF6]3-∞ chains, further stacking with each other in a highly cross-linked way to establish the rigid network of the KCaAl2F9 host. Benefiting from the rigid microenvironment, the developed phosphor not only shows a narrow-band deep-blue emission with a full width at half maximum of 45 nm and a high color purity of 92%, but it also exhibits the superior thermal stability with an emission loss of only 10% at 423 K, demonstrating its application potential in bridging the deep-blue spectral cavity toward sunlight-like full-spectrum lighting. In addition, the concentration/temperature quenching behaviors of KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor are systematically investigated. By revealing the specific structure-property relationship of tungsten bronze-type KCaAl2F9:Eu2+ phosphor, the present study provides a significant guide for identifying the novel narrow-band deep-blue-emitting component applicable to full-spectrum warm white light-emitting diode devices.

Abstract:The blue-emitting phosphor is one of the trichromatic phosphors essential for the development of near-ultraviolet (nUV) pumped phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs). Efficiency and thermal stability are two critical factors for the potential application of phosphors in solid-state lighting. In this work, we report a highly efficient blue-emitting phosphor, α-Sr 2 SiO 4 :0.02Ce 3+ /0.02K + (emission peak at 425 nm) with superior thermally enhanced photoluminescence properties. The Rietveld refinement results suggest that Ce 3+ preferentially occupies the nine-fold coordinated Sr2 site only whereas K + occupies both Sr1 and Sr2 sites in the host structure. Its emission intensity gradually increases with increasing temperature and retains 120% of its room-temperature peak intensity at 250 °C. Besides, its luminescence spectral peak does not shift at elevated temperatures. Under nUV irradiation, the phosphor is highly luminous with an excellent internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 91.7%. The abnormal thermal quenching phenomenon can be ascribed to the defect energy levels introduced by defect engineering using an aliovalent doping strategy of Ce 3+ and K + in the α-Sr 2 SiO 4 host structure. The as-fabricated WLED prototypes demonstrated the great potential of the highly efficient blue-emitting phosphor with superior thermal stability for solid-state lighting applications.

Abstract:For the commercial application of the Eu3+-activated red phosphors in NUV (∼365 nm)-excited phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-wLED), the serious obstacle is that they cannot be efficiently excited by ∼365 nm. To deal with the trouble, we employed the energy transfer between Dy3+ sensitizer excited by ∼365 nm and Eu3+ activator, and a color-tunable phosphor Na3Ca4(TeO3)(PO4)3 (NCTP):Dy3+,Eu3+ was prepared via a fast microwave-assisted solid-state reaction. Under the 363 nm excitation, the luminous color is adjusted to red owing to the Dy3+→Eu3+ energy transfer with high efficiency, which is controlled by the dipole–dipole interaction. Moreover, the introduction of Dy3+ sensitizers in NCTP:Eu3+ enhances the structural rigidity, resulting in high luminescence thermostability. The luminescent intensity at 423 K remains 90.7% of that at 298 K. Notably, the 365 nm chip-excited pc-wLED device assembled with NCTP:0.09Dy3+,0.4Eu3+, commercial blue BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+, and green (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors emits warm-white light (0.3657,0.3725) with the ultra-high R a (94.9) and low CCT (4399 K). This work offers a feasible Dy3+→Eu3+ energy transfer path for the development of efficient Eu3+-activated red phosphor towards ultra-high color rendering pc-wLED.

Abstract:Highly efficient green/yellowish‐orange phosphors with low thermal quenching behavior are urgently required to improve the luminescence efficiency, color stability, and color rendering of phosphor‐converted white light emitting diodes (w‐LEDs). Herein, a novel green Cs2BaP2O7:0.01Eu2+ phosphor with high luminescence efficiency (82.7%) and thermal quenching behavior (92.5% at 423 K) is reported. Besides, a further luminescence improvement in the quantum yield (98.9%) and thermal quenching resistance (120% at 448 K) is successfully achieved in green/yellowish‐orange color‐tunable Cs2MP2O7:0.01Eu2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors. Surprisingly, these green/yellowish‐orange Cs2MP2O7:0.01Eu2+ (M = Ba, Sr, and Ca) phosphors even have a prior advantage over the commercial green β‐SiAlON:Eu2+ and yellow YAG:Ce3+ phosphors. The corresponding spectral adjustment and thermal stability mechanisms are revealed, related to the optimization of local lattice symmetry. The prototype w‐LEDs exhibit warm white light with CIE color coordinate at (0.337, 0.322). The color rendering index, corrected color temperature, and luminescence efficiency can reach 92.6, 4044 K, and 152.56 lm W−1, respectively. In general, the as‐reported green/yellowish‐orange Eu2+‐doped pyrophosphate phosphors are promising candidates in the future high‐quality w‐LEDs applications. The proposal of local lattice symmetry modulation can provide a new approach to exploit novel phosphors with excellent thermal quenching resistance.
Ultra-narrow band blue-emitting Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphors with excellent thermal stability

Abstract:The narrow band phosphors with excellent thermal stability have received growing attention from academic and industrial researchers. In this work, a novel Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor was prepared via solid phase reaction. Their crystal structure, phase composition, morphology and optical performance containing photoluminescence (PL) emission, PL excitation and temperature-dependence PL spectra were systematically analyzed. Compared with commercial BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+ blue phosphor, the as-obtained Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor displays a narrower band blue emission (λem = 440 nm) with a full width at half maximum of 32 nm under the near ultraviolet light excitation and an excellent thermal stability for 83.3% of the initial intensity at 150 °C. The quantum yield of the Ba4.98Eu0.02SiO4Cl6 phosphors was estimated to be as high as 57.2%. Finally, a LED device coupling UV-chip (400 nm) with Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+, (Sr, Ba)2SiO4: Eu2+, (Sr, Ca)AlSiN3: Eu2+ phosphors display attractive optical performance with LE = 45 lm/W, CCT = 3407 K and Ra = 94. Therefore, there are good reasons for believing that the Ba5SiO4Cl6: Eu2+ phosphor will be a market prospect phosphor for the application of lighting and display.

Abstract:In the pursuit of high efficiency and wide color gamut in displays, there is still an urgent demand for high-performing narrow-band green-emitting phosphors. Inspired by a mineral UCr4C4-type structure with a highly condensed framework, a novel narrow-band green-emitting Na3K5(Li3SiO4)8:Eu2+ (NKLSO:Eu2+) phosphor is designed. This phosphor exhibits a green emission peaking at 525 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 43 nm. The narrow-band emission is associated with the highly symmetric sites for Eu2+. Benefiting from its high structural rigidity, this NKLSO:Eu2+ phosphor shows a very low photoluminescence (PL) thermal quenching, maintaining 96%@150 °C integrated PL intensity of the original PL intensity. Moreover, by incorporating a small amount of Al3+ into the lattice, the internal quantum efficiency (QE) and external QE of this phosphor is enhanced from 70 to ∼100% and 21 to 38%, respectively. The as-fabricated wLED-1 (InGaN chip@blue, NKLSO:1.25% Eu2+@green, KSiF6:Mn4+@red) shows a wide color gamut (106% NTSC), demonstrating vivid photographs when used in a projector. The as-fabricated wLED-4 (BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+@blue, NKLSO:1.25% Eu2+@green, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+@red) presents a low correlated color temperature of 5390 K and a high color rendering index (Ra) of 86.9. These results show that narrow-band green-emitting NKLSO:Eu2+ has potential applications in both backlight displays and solid-state lighting.

Abstract:During the process of developing commercial chips, the phosphors with single broadband emission are indispensable. In this report, a new ternary phosphate phosphor Na3Ba2Ca(PO4)3:Eu2+ has been successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state reaction (HSSR) method, which shows broad emitting band in the range of 350–600 nm centered at 436 nm (FWHM ∼ 72.3 nm). The crystal structure of the Na3Ba2Ca(PO4)3 and Eu2+ doped Na3Ba2Ca(PO4)3 were determined by the Rietveld method, indicating the trigonal system with P31c space group. The selective two-site occupancy tendency of Eu2+ ions at Ba1O9 and Ca2O8 sites in the matrix was comprehensively revealed according to the split peaks (433 nm and 469 nm) at 298 K and 11 K, computational validation and fluorescence lifetime analysis of photoluminescence spectrum. Impressively, the optimal Na3Ba2Ca(PO4)3:0.02Eu2+ phosphor exhibits appropriate spectrum resemblance (SR) indexes (58.5% and 72.2%), proper thermostability (78.6%) and excellent chromaticity stability (Δx = 8.68 × 10−6 and Δy = 3.64 × 10−5). Besides, the phosphor prepared by HSSR owns the higher internal quantum efficiency of 62.1% in comparison with that synthesized by polymerizable complex (PC) method. The new phosphor can serve as a potential broadband and blue-emitting phosphor for the application of solid-state lighting and plant growth.

Abstract:Abandoning the traditional trial‐and‐error method, a cation substitution strategy is employed to modulate the local crystal field of Eu2+ ions and tailor cyan phosphors with high quantum efficiency and thermal stability. This high‐performance cyan phosphor can be used for full‐spectrum illumination and fingerprint detection. Traditional lighting methods have environmental and efficiency drawbacks. These methods are gradually being overshadowed by light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) because of their superior color rendering and energy efficiency. In this study, color‐tunable NaBa2(Ba/Sr/Ca)Si2O7F:Eu2+ phosphors are successfully designed by modulating the local crystal field environment through homodominant‐group cation substitution, thereby allowing for a spectral shift from blue to bright cyan. Detailed structural analysis of the samples demonstrated the synthesis of high‐quality solid‐solution materials. A comprehensive examination of the phosphor crystal structure, photoluminescence properties, and fluorescence lifetime reveal that the cyan phosphor possesses a remarkable internal quantum efficiency (IQE = 93%) and low thermal quenching characteristics (I423 K/I303 K = 84%). The results illustrate the critical role of Eu2+‐activated cyan phosphors in reducing the spectral gap to attain a natural white‐light spectrum, which is indispensable for achieving high color fidelity. The practical application of cyan phosphors in the fabrication of high‐performance white LED (WLED) (Ra = 96.8) and fingerprint detection is validated, demonstrating their extensive utility in enhancing visual accuracy and identification.

Abstract:Due to the complicated production process and reabsorption problem, the development and application for white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are affected. A combination of cyan and red phosphors with near-ultraviolet (n-UV) LED chip has been proposed to solve these problems. Its key is developing cyan phosphor with broad emission band and excellent performances. In this work, we have developed a broadband cyan-emitting phosphor RbBa2(PO3)5: Eu2+ (RBP: Eu2+) by a solid-state method. The phase purity, crystal structure, luminescence properties and their relationship were investigated systematically. The RBP: Eu2+ phosphor can yield asymmetric broadband cyan emission upon 350 nm light excitation, which is ascribed to the occupation of Eu2+ for both the Ba1 and Ba2 sites. The measurement of temperature-dependent luminescence implies that the phosphor remains 89.5% of the initial value at 150 °C, which is much better than the commercial Ba2SiO4: Eu2+ phosphor. Furthermore, a WLED device has been obtained by composing the RBP: 0.01Eu2+ and CaAlSiN3: Eu2+ phosphors with a 365 nm LED chip. The emitted white light can show fabulous performances with the color coordinates of (0.3792, 0.3359), correlated color temperature of 3841 K and CRI of 90.8. The results suggest the RBP: Eu2+ phosphor to be a promising candidate for high-power WLEDs.

Abstract:Bi3+ has gained increasing attention due to its abundant reserves, adjustable luminous colour and high chemical stability, therefore, Bi3+-activated luminescent materials have already been extensively applied in various fields. Herein, a novel blue-emitting CaNaSb2O6F:Bi3+ (CNSOF:Bi3+) phosphor with a pyrochlore-type structure with the space group Fd3̄m (277) was successfully synthesized. It exhibits a broad absorption band in the n-UV region (290-390 nm) and an ideal blue emission band centered at 441 nm. Interestingly, the wide emission peak of CNSOF:Bi3+ shows strongly temperature-dependent fluorescence properties and good thermal degradation resistance in the cycle temperature range from 298 K to 473 K, and the relative sensitivity is calculated to reach the maximum value of 2.34% K-1 at 423 K. Besides, the phosphor is different from a traditional optical temperature sensing material which shows the emission peak of trivalent rare earth ions. The wide emission peak makes the instrument insensitive to the peak shift, which dramatically reduces the requirement of the instrument, and the emission peak does not shift with the temperature to enhance the measurement stability, thus saving the cost. These results indicate that the CNSOF:Bi3+ blue emitting phosphor has potential applications in temperature sensing.
