Abstract:The shift of the emission band to longer wavelength (yellow-orange) of the Ba2MgSi2−xAlxO7: 0.1Eu2+ phosphor under the 350–450nm excitation range has been achieved by adding the codoping element (Mn2+) in the host. The single-host silicate phosphor for WLED, Ba2MgSi2−xAlxO7: 0.1Eu2+, 0.1Mn2+ was prepared by high-temperature solid-state reaction. It was found experimentally that, its three-color emission peaks are situated at 623, 501 and 438nm, respectively, under excitation of 350–450nm irradiation. The emission peaks at 438 and 501nm originate from the transition 5d to 4f of Eu2+ ions that occupy the two Ba2+ sites in the crystal of Ba2MgSi2−x AlxO7, while the 623nm emission is attributed to the energy transfer from Eu2+ ions to Mn2+ ions. The white light can be obtained by mixing the three emission colors of blue (438nm), green (501nm) and red (623nm) in the single host. When the concentrations of the Al3+, Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions were 0.4, 0.1 and 0.1mol, respectively, the sample presented intense white emission. The addition of Al ion to the host leads to a substantial change of intensity ratio between blue and green emissions. White light could be obtained by combining this phosphor with 405nm light-emitting diodes. The near-ultraviolet GaN-based Ba2MgSi1.7 Al0.3O7: 0.1Eu2+, 0.1Mn2+ LED achieves good color rendering of over 85.

Abstract:Sr3SiO5: Ce3+, Li+ phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. By co-doping Ba2+ into them, the emission band of the phosphors showed a red shifts with a broad emission band peaking at 590nm. The InGaN-based 0.35Ba2+ co-doped Sr3SiO5: 0.018Ce3+, 0.018Li+ LED presented white emitting and color rendering index of 88.
The pure-phase Ba3−xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+ green phosphor: synthesis, photoluminescence and thermal properties

Abstract:The promising green oxynitride phosphor, Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+, was synthesized at 1350 degrees C for 5 hours under a reducing N-2/H-2 (5%) atmosphere via the solid-state reaction method. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of the pure phase of Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+. With an increase in x, the emission spectra shift from 525 nm to 536 nm under near-UV (n-UV) excitation. Accordingly, we propose the underlying mechanisms for the red-shift of the emission spectra by adjusting the cation composition in the host. The influence of the size mismatch on the thermal quenching is also observed. The as-prepared green phosphor exhibits great thermal quenching property, with the remaining 83% of the initial emission intensity measured at 150 degrees C. The quantum efficiency is measured to be 35.2%. All the results indicate that the Ba3-xCaxSi6O12N2:Eu2+ can be a good candidate phosphor applicable to n-UV light-emitting diodes for solid-state lighting.
SrLaGa3O7:Bi3+/Eu3+/Tb3+: A novel trichromatic phosphor for WLEDs

Abstract:In order to improve the properties of white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), a number of phosphors have been investigated. In this study, a variety of SLGO phosphors doped with Bi3+/Eu3+, Bi3+/Tb3+, and Bi3+/Eu3+/Tb3+ ions were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure, site occupancy of the SLGO host, and the phase composition of the synthesized phosphors were discussed. The optical properties of the synthesized phosphors were characterized by UV–vis, PLE and PL techniques. The relative PL mechanisms and energy transfer (ET) processes (Bi3+→Eu3+, Bi3+→Tb3+ and Tb3+→Eu3+) were discussed in detail. In addition, the CIE chromaticity coordinates of these phosphors were calculated. Tunable PL has been achieved througth adjusting the concentrations of three doping ions and ET process. The ET process was verified by the fluorescence lifetime test. The thermal stability of the phosphor was also studied and discussed. Finally, a WLED device was fabricated by combining the SLGO:Bi3+/Tb3+/Eu3+ phosphor with a 275 nm LED chip, and the electroluminescence was measured. The values of CCT and CRI were 5263 K and 78, respectively. The results demonstrate that the synthesized phopshors have potential applications in the field of WLEDs.

Cathodoluminescence Properties of Ba3Si6O9N4:Eu2+ Phosphors

Abstract:Ba3-xSi6O9N4:xEu(2+) (0.03 <= x <= 0.10) phosphors were successfully synthesized by a solid state reaction method. Under electron beam excitation, the cathodoluminescence intensity reached a maximum at x = 0.07. The corresponding emission spectrum peaked at similar to 493 nm (full-width at half maximum approximate to 46 nm) with CIE coordinate of (0.101, 0.418). The results show that Ba2.93Si6O9N4:0.07Eu(2+) phosphor exhibits high brightness, high color purity, and a higher thermal stability compared to the commercial green Topstar, LMS520B phosphor, which indicates that it could be a candidate for field-emission displays (FEDs). Abstract:Bi3+ doped Ca12Al14O32Cl2 series were successfully synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction method and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with cubic space group I-43d were obtained by XRD refinement as a=12.0183(3)Å and V (cell volume)=1735.93(1)Å3. The resulting phosphors absorb ultraviolet (UV) light (240–400nm) and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 400–600nm with maximum intensity at 483nm. The Commission Internationale de 1’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are about x=0.185, y=0.306. Thus, the novel light blue-emitting phosphor Ca12Al14O32Cl2:Bi3+ could be potentially applied in UV white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Solid-state phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) are the leading trend of the lighting industry in the 21st century. To pursue high quality WLED lighting, the development of highly efficient phosphors with tunable luminescence has become a hot research topic. Herein, we reported for the first time on Bi3+/Eu3+-doped Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8 phosphors that exhibited tunable emission and high energy transfer efficiency of 89.90% from Bi3+ to Eu3+. The phase purity, microstructure, electronic structure and photoluminescence properties of these phosphors were studied in detail. Bi3+ and Eu3+ were effectively doped in Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8 with an optical bandgap of 3.81 eV. The band structure and density of states were quantitatively evaluated by density functional theory simulation. At an excitation wavelength of 342 nm, the Bi3+-doped phosphor achieved yellow-green emission. By alloying Eu3+ into Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8:Bi3+, the luminescence gradually turned red due to the energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+. Moreover, the activation energy of the prepared phosphor was 0.1897 eV, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. Eventually, by combining Li3Ba2Y3(WO4)8:4%Bi3+,4%Eu3+ and a blue-emitting BAM:Eu2+ phosphor with a 365 nm ultraviolet chip, a WLED device with a high colour rendering index (Ra) of 78.7, chromaticity coordinates of (0.3401, 0.3131) and correlated colour temperature of 5080 K was successfully achieved. This work provided new insights into the design and development of color-tunable phosphors for white LEDs.

Abstract:The increasing demand for full-visible-spectrum lighting has prompted the development of novel phosphors with multicolor emission. Trivalent Bi 3+ -activated phosphors, known for their tunable emission without spectral reabsorption phenomena, hold great potential for n-UV LED applications. A better understanding of the Bi 3+ luminescence and valence transformation is significant. In this study, a bismuth-activated blue emitting phosphor Lu 2 SrAl 4 SiO 12 :Bi 3+ (LSAS:Bi 3+ ) with a garnet structure was successfully designed and synthesized via the high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure, electronic structure, and luminescence properties together with their relation are fully illustrated. The energy diagram of LSAS:Bi 3+ was assigned through theoretical calculations and spectral analysis. Furthermore, we analyzed the luminescence of Bi 2+ induced by electron beam excitation, demonstrating the transformation of Bi 3+ in the LSAS matrix. This finding enhances the understanding of the luminescence properties of bismuth-activated phosphors. The WLED device with full-visible-spectrum was obtained based on LSAS:Bi 3+ with an n-UV chip and green and red phosphors. This study not only provides insights into the structure–performance relationship of bismuth-activated phosphors but also expands their potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Developing single‐phase white emitting phosphors are meaningful but challenging in white light‐emitting diode (WLED) applications. Here, Ba2ZnWO6:0.006Bi3+ phosphor is reported, where Ba2+/Zn2+ sites are occupied by Bi3+ ions via crystal lattice engineering, leading to ultrabroadband white emissions (400−800 nm) and high absorption in the nearly ultraviolet band (350−400 nm), which in total presents great potential for applications in single‐phase warm WLEDs.Single‐phase white luminescence phosphors are emerging for potential phosphor‐converted white light‐emitting diodes (pc‐WLEDs) and alternatives to trichromatic phosphor blends. In this work, Ba2ZnWO6:Bi3+ phosphors are prepared by a high‐temperature solid‐state reaction method and the luminescent properties are investigated. The broadband excitation from 250 to 400 nm is perfectly matched with the emission of nearly ultraviolet (n‐UV) InGaN chip, which ultrabroadband emission band (full width at half maximum = 217 nm) can cover a wider luminescence region. Li+/Na+/K+ codoping is more desirable for the ultrabroadband emission of Ba2ZnWO6:0.006Bi3+ due to the charge compensation and rationally designed lattice distortion while improving the thermal stability of the phosphor. Furthermore, tunable emissions can be achieved either by changing the content of doped ions or the excitation wavelength due to the different occupation of Ba2+ and Zn2+ sites by Bi3+ ions. Finally, single‐phase warm WLED ((x, y) = (0.4170, 0.4035)) devices with a correlated color temperature of 3329 K and color rendering index of Ra = 75.3 are successfully prepared using Ba2ZnWO6:0.006Bi3+, 0.03Na+ phosphor, and 365 nm InGaN chips. These results indicate that Ba2ZnWO6:Bi3+ has excellent potential as phosphor for n‐UV pc‐WLEDs and provides new ideas for the application of ultrabroadband emitting phosphors in WLEDs.

Abstract:A series of novel red-emitting BaLiZn3(BO3)(3):Eu3+ phosphors were synthesized through the high temperature solid state reaction method. The phase composition, crystal structure, morphology and photoluminescence property of the BaLiZn3(BO3)3:Eu3+ samples were systematically investigated. The phosphor can be efficiently excited by the near ultraviolet light (NUV) of 396 nm and blue light of 466 nm, and give out red light emission at 618 nm corresponding to the electric dipole transition (5D0/7F2). The optimal doping concentration of Eu3+ ions in BaLiZn3(BO3)(3) is determined to be about 3 mol%, and the concentration-quenching phenomenon arise from the electric dipole-dipole interaction. The temperature dependent luminescence behavior of BaLiZn3(BO3)(3):0.03Eu(3+) phosphor exhibits its good thermal stability, and the activation energy for thermal quenching characteristics is calculated to be 0.1844 eV. The decay lifetime of the BaLiZn3(BO3)(3):0.03Eu(3+) is measured to be 1.88 ms. These results suggest that the (3+):Eu3+ phosphors have the potential application as a red component in white light emitting diodes (WLEDs) with NUV or blue chips.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Bi3+-activated Ca2LuZrScAl2GeO12 (CLZSAG) phosphor with a garnet structure was prepared by the high temperature solid-state method. There are two kinds of luminescent centers in CLZSAG:Bi3+ phosphor, which give a blue emission under 365 nm excitation and a rare near-ultraviolet emission with a narrow band (FWHM=34 nm) under 290 nm excitation. The combination of structure and luminescence reveals that the Bi3+ ions occupy the sites of the LuO8 and ScO6 polyhedrons with different local coordination environments, leading to the two different luminescence behaviors. In addition, the prepared phosphors also have excellent thermostability (I423 K/298 K = 80%), and high quantum efficiency of 72% and 60% under 290 and 365 nm excitation, respectively. Since the absorption band of the phosphor in the UV-visible region can match well with the commercial 365 nm chips, a high-performance WLED device with a high color rendering index (Ra=98.5) and low correlated color temperature (CCT=4455 K) was obtained by combining commercial phosphors Lu-YAG:Ce3+, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ and samples of CLZSAG:Bi3+ phosphor with 365 nm chips. Our results demonstrate the CLZSAG:Bi3+ has great potential application in WLED device.

Abstract:A novel single-phased tunable emitting phosphor Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Bi3+, Eu3+ (BLSO: Bi3+, Eu3+) was successfully prepared via a simple solid-state approach. The main excitation peaks range from 320 to 400 nm of BLSO: Bi3+ were identified by photoluminescence characterization, indicating BLSO:Bi3+ viable for ultraviolet (UV) excitation. Emission spectra show that Bi3+ occupies at least two nonequivalent sites in BLSO host, and display broad emission peaks at 410 and 490 nm when excited by UV light, respectively. As red emitting center Eu3+ was introduced into BLSO: Bi3+, significant energy transfer (ET) occurs from Bi3+ to Eu3+ through a dipoledipole mechanism. The ET efficiency reaches 97.57%. By varying the doped ratio of Bi3+ and Eu3+, tunable light and white emission can be easily realized. Results indicate that BLSO:Bi3+, Eu3+ is a potential tunable emission phosphor in UV excited W-LEDs.
Strategy for developing thermal-quenching-resistant emitting and super-long persistent luminescence in BaGa2O4:Bi3+

Abstract:We report a novel orange-emitting phosphor BaGa2O4:0.02Bi(3+) with ultra-broadband emission and a large Stokes shift (1.88 eV). Its crystal structure, photoluminescence (PL) spectra, thermoluminescence (TL) spectra and long persistent luminescence (LPL) were investigated. The Bi3+ emission centers located at different six-membered rings are responsible for the asymmetric broadband PL spectra peaking at 638 nm. The integrated PL intensity of the phosphor at 200 degrees C still maintains 93.6%, 88.1% and 174.0% of the one at room temperature upon 310, 325 and 365 nm excitation due to the compensating emission losses of the phosphor with increasing temperature. Also, commendable LPL can be observed by the naked eye for 7 days and detected using a spectrofluorometer for 25 days in the dark after the stoppage of the 254 nm excitation. Both the unusual resistance to thermal quenching and super long LPL properties rely on the capture and release processes of the charge carriers in the traps. Finally, a white light emitting diode (WLED) with high Ra(>90) was obtained by combining the BaGa2O4:0.02Bi(3+) phosphor with a UV-LED chip. Our concept of exploiting phosphors may open a gateway for discovering new multifunctional phosphors with excellent PL and LPL properties.

Abstract:Single-component white phosphor is highly desirable to obtain efficient and stable white light-emitting diodes (w-LED). In this paper, a series of Bi3+, Tb3+, and Eu3+ doped Ca3LuAl3B4O15 (CLAB) luminescent materials were successfully prepared. The structure, morphology, and optical properties of samples were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electronic microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. The synthesized phosphor exhibits strong blue band emission from Bi3+ and intense characteristics line emission from Tb3+ and Eu3+ under ultraviolet (UV) light excitation. The emission color can fine be adjusted by changing the doping content of the three activators. The warm white light of CLAB:0.5%Bi3+,2%Tb3+,0.75%Eu3+ with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.3728,0.3166), a CCT of 3671 K, and a Ra index of 87 could be realized under UV light excitation. The fabricated w-LED by combining UV chip with CLAB:0.5%Bi3+,2%Tb3+,0.75%Eu3+ shows excellent thermal stability after high-temperature aging test, implying its promising application in single-phosphor-converted warm w-LEDs.

Abstract:A novel deep‐blue phosphor SrGa2B2O7: Bi3+, K+ has low proportions of emission in the solar spectrum, high quantum yield, and negative thermal quenching behavior. It has excellent luminescent performance and stability and can be well applied to white LED. Luminescent materials with emissions at specific wavelengths, which have a relatively lower proportion of emissions in the solar spectrum, have great prospects for use in production and daily life. In this study, SrGaB2O7 deep‐blue phosphors doped with Bi3+ are synthesized, it has 430 nm deep‐blue emissions and a low proportion of emissions relative to 470–660 nm visible light in the solar spectrum. By co‐doping with alkali metal ions to compensate for the charge, the emission intensities and absolute quantum yields of the phosphors can be effectively improved. The SrGaB2O7:0.01Bi3+, 0.01K+ deep‐blue phosphor has a high quantum yield of 85% and negative thermal quenching properties. Moreover, the SrGaB2O7:0.01Bi3+, 0.01K+ deep‐blue phosphor can be packaged with different potting adhesives to form light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), exhibiting excellent luminescent performances and promising application prospects.

Abstract:The cyan SrLaGa3O7:Bi3+ phosphors were prepared via the solid state sintering processes at 1400 °C. The optical performance was characterized and researched based on the theory calculation and experimental results. The phase and constitution of the prepared SrLaGa3O7:Bi3+ phosphors were ascertained by the X-ray diffraction and elemental composition analyses. The theory calculations were carried out based on the state density function. Upon the ultraviolet light excitation, SrLaGa3O7:Bi3+ phosphors yield broadband emission in 380–600 nm relating to the 3P1→1S0 transitions of Bi3+. The full width of the half-maximum of emission band reaches ∼130 nm. Tunable light was achieved by adjusting the content of Bi3+ or changing the excitation wavelength.

Abstract:In this paper, cyan BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors were synthesized by solid-state reaction method at 1400 °C. The crystal structure, elemental composition and optical properties were characterized and studied. The results of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy indicate the successful synthesis of BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors with the pure phase. The BaLaGa3O7: Bi3+ phosphors show wide band emission corresponding to the 3P1→1S0 transition of Bi3+ when excited at 328 nm.

Abstract:In this work, a series of broad-band green phosphors SrLaScO 4 : x Bi 3+ ( x = 0–0.1) were synthesized using the traditional solid-state method, and the luminescence was effectively enhanced via multi cationic partial substitution strategy. The SrLaScO 4 : x Bi 3+ phosphors all exhibit a wide emission band with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 115–148 nm in the range of 450–700 nm upon excitation at 333 nm, effectively filling the cyan gap and peaking at 505 nm. It is proved that the observed luminescence originates from both the 3 P 1 state of Bi 3+ in [(Sr/La)O 8 ] site and the Bi 3+ - to - Sc 3+ metal to metal charge transfer (MMCT) state. The optimal concentration of Bi 3+ doped SrLaScO 4 phosphor is 1 at%, and the concentration quenching mechanism is the dipole-dipole interaction. Remarkably, the luminescence intensity of the phosphor is 198.4 % increased by partially replacing Sr 2+ ions with Mg 2+ . Due to the good matching of the excitation wavelength of the phosphor with the near-UV chip, a high-quality WLED device with color stability and high color rendering index ( Ra = 92.1) was prepared by combining commercial phosphor with SrLaScO 4 :0.01Bi 3+ phosphor. We anticipate that this work can provide new ideas for finding high-performance phosphors for high color rendering index pc-WLED.
