Abstract:The ethane contained in wet shale gas is usually used to produce ethylene through the steam cracking process. In parallel, the partial oxidation (PDX) of methane is the most important method to produce acetylene. In this paper, the feasibility of the PDX process of ethane was first explored. The reaction pathway analysis showed that the exothermal oxidation and endothermic pyrolysis reactions were highly coupled, which limited the yield of C-2 species (C2H2 + C2H4). To overcome this problem, a new process named partially decoupling process (PDP) was proposed to physically separate the heat supply and pyrolysis reactions in a jet-in-cross-flow (JICF) reactor. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with a detailed reaction mechanism, the modified Gill 3.0, was applied to simulate the complex interaction between turbulent mixing and reactions. The results showed that a high combined yield of ethylene and acetylene (69%) could be obtained. The operating and reactor structural parameters were further optimized based on the CFD simulations. The maximum yield of C-2 products was found less sensitive to the mixing in the ethane PDP than in the methane PDP, making it easier to scale up the reactor for the ethane PDP.

Abstract:With increasing amount of unconventional natural gas, the production of ethane, propane and other low alkanes continues to increase. In our previous works, a partially decoupled process (PDP) was proposed for conversion of ethane based on numerical simulations, which showed higher acetylene and ethylene selectivities than the original partial oxidation process. In the current work, the PDP of ethane for producing acetylene and ethylene was studied experimentally to verify the PDP concept. In the PDP of ethane, coke-oven gas or other cheap gas combusts with stoichiometric oxygen as heat carrier, and ethane is mixed with the heat carrier and undergoes pyrolysis at high temperatures. The jet-in-cross-flow (JICF) reactor was designed and manufactured to realize the PDP. A positioning device of 0.1 mm accuracy and a mass spectrometer were used to measure the spatial profiles of the species concentrations. The maximum combined yield (52.7%) of acetylene and ethylene was obtained even at the condition of heat loss, confirming that the PDP of ethane was advantageous over the partial oxidation process and at least comparable to the steam cracking process.

Abstract:The partial oxidation (POX) of methane is one of the most important processes to produce acetylene and syngas. The reaction pathway analysis using a detailed chemical mechanism (modified GRI 3.0) showed that the exothermal oxidation and endothermic pyrolysis reactions were highly coupled in the original PDX process, which limited the yield of acetylene. A new process that physically separated the heat supply and pyrolysis reactions was proposed to increase the acetylene yield. The maximum yield of acetylene was enhanced from 33% to 52% in the theoretical calculations assuming inert and instantaneous Mixing. A jet-in cross-flow (JICF) reactor Was designed to realize this new process. The. computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method coupled with the modified GRI 3.0 was applied to simulate the complex interaction between turbulent mixing and reactions. The results showed that a high acetylene yield of 41% Could be obtained in the JICF reactor. The optimization of the reactor indicated that the optimum number of jets was 8, and the optimal mixing ratio was 0:566 for maximum acetylene yield. The maximum acetylene yield significantly decreased in a larger reactor, and mixing enhancement was the main way to further improve the acetylne yield.

Abstract:The effects of methanol cofeeding on reaction performances and reaction pathways for light olefin production from butene were investigated. Reactions under different conditions were carried out, and the kinetics of butene consumption was established using the integration method. On the basis of the kinetic study, the reaction pathways for butene conversion changed due to the cofeeding and much higher conversion of butene was found in the cofeeding reaction than that of the butene cracking when extrapolation to space time was 0, indicating that conversion of butene was promoted when methanol joined the reaction due to the coreaction of butene and methanol. The reaction activity was improved due the cofeeding, leading to significant improvements in reaction performances for light olefin production from butene, especially under conditions of high WHSV and low concentration of butene or on stream treated catalysts. The results indicated that the cofeeding reaction was a feasible way to raise throughput and cope with hydrothermal deactivation for feeds with low butene concentrations.

Abstract:Ethane in unconventional natural gas was mainly used as the feedstock of the steam cracking process. In our previous work, a new ethane conversion process named partially decoupled process (PDP) was proposed and investigated by experiments and numerical simulations. In the ethane PDP, coke oven gas or other cheap gas combusts with stoichiometric oxygen as heat carrier, and ethane is mixed with the heat carrier and cracked at a high temperature. In this work, a new type of reactor named Forward-Impinging-Back (FIB) reactor was proposed for a better scale-up performance and investigated by CFD simulations coupled with a detailed reaction mechanism. The simulation results showed that a maximum C-2(C2H2 + C2H4) yield of 65.6% was obtained for the ethane PDP in a FIB reactor. The FIB reactor and Jet-In-Cross-Flow (JICF) reactor of small diameter had similar performance. When the reactor diameter increased from 30 mm to 390 mm, the C-2 yield maintained at 64% in the FIB reactor, but decreased from 64.4% to 43.8% in JICF reactor.

Abstract:The partial oxidation of hydrocarbons is an important technical route to produce acetylene for chemical industry.The partial oxidation reactor is the key to high acetylene yields.This work is an experimental and numerical study on the use of a methane flame to produce acetylene.A lab scale partial oxidation reactor was used to produce ultra fuel-rich premixed jet flames.The axial temperature and species concentration profiles were measured for different equivalence ratios and preheating temperatures,and these were compared to numerical results from Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)simulations that used the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes Probability Density Function(RANS-PDF)approach coupled with detailed chemical mechanisms.The Leeds 1.5,GRI 3.0 and San Diego mechanisms were used to investigate the effect of the detailed chemical mechanisms.The effects of equivalence ratio and preheating temperature on acetylene production were experimentally and numerically studied.The experimental validations indicated that the present numerical simulation provided reliable prediction on the partial oxidation of methane.Using this simulation method the optimal equivalence ratio for acetylene production was determined to be 3.6.Increasing preheating temperature improved acetylene production and shortened greatly the ignition delay time.So the increase of preheating temperature had to be limited to avoid uncontrolled ignition in the mixing chamber and the pyrolysis of methane in the preheater.

Abstract:The partial oxidation (POX) of natural gas is the main approach to produce acetylene. This process involves fuel-rich turbulent combustion, millisecond mixing and rapid quenching cooling, which are difficult to study by experiments and empirical macrokinetics. This work reported numerical simulations of the POX reactor by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with detailed chemistry. The GRI 3.0 and San Diego mechanisms were used. A modification was made to GRI 3.0 based on sensitive analysis and comparison with experimental data. With the modified GRI 3.0, the CFD simulation results agreed well with the industrial data. The influence of the reactant preheating temperature and equivalence ratio, which are most important operating parameters, was studied. The results showed that an optimum equivalence ratio exists for maximum acetylene yield. The increase of preheating temperature enhanced the acetylene yield and decreased the corresponding optimum equivalence ratio. The effect of adding C2H6 was also studied to explore the feasibility of using wet shale gas as feedstock of POX.

Abstract:The non-catalytic partial oxidation of methane to acetylene was simulated with Curran detailed reaction mechanism using CHEMKIN software. Under the industrial relevant operating conditions of preheating temperature 873 K and oxygen/methane molar ratio 0.55, the simulated maximum acetylene concentration was 7.6%(mol), in agreement with the industrial data. The effects of operation parameters, such as oxygen/methane molar ratio, preheating temperature and reaction time, on the ignition delay time and species concentrations, were investigated. The simulation results show that there is an optimal oxygen/methane molar ratio to get the maximum acetylene concentration at a given preheating temperature. The maximum acetylene concentration can be notably enhanced by increasing the preheating temperature: the maximum acetylene concentration was 7.8%(mol) at preheating temperature 823 K, and was 8.4%(mol) at preheating temperature 1023 K. The acetylene concentration deceased rapidly after reaching its maximum, therefore the product mixture must be quickly quenched at the position of maximum acetylene concentration to get a maximum acetylene yield.

Abstract:The partial oxidation (POX) of natural gas to produce acetylene was studied using detailed chemistry simulation to determine the influences of adding H2, C2H6 and C3H8 to the CH4 feed. Four detailed chemistry mechanisms, codenamed GRI 3.0, GRI 486, Petersen, and Curran, for describing the POX of natural gas under fuel-rich conditions were evaluated by comparing calculated results with ignition delay time and homogeneous oxidation data. The Curran mechanism gave the best performance, and was further used to examine the influences brought about by changes in the natural gas composition due to the addition of H2, C2H6 and C3H8. The addition of H2, C2H6 and C3H8 reduced the consumption of natural gas per ton of acetylene produced, and would enhance the economy of the POX process and help use up excess H2, C2H6 and C3H8 from other processes in chemical plants. For natural gases that contain small amounts of higher hydrocarbons, the adding of H2, C2H6 and C3H8 significantly decreased the ignition delay time, and the residence time of the feed in the mixing zone has to be reduced when adding these species to avoid uncontrolled combustion.

Abstract:Wet shale gas contains relatively high concentrations of heavier hydrocarbons. In industry, the cryogenic separation process is used to separate methane and heavier hydrocarbons for the downstream conversion. In this work, the feasibility of direct application of wet gas in the partial oxidation (PDX) process was studied. Flat flame experiments of methane with addition of ethane and propane were conducted using a McKenna reactor. The results showed that the mole fractions of acetylene and CO increased by 15% and 25% when using wet gas as the feedstock. Four detailed chemical mechanisms were verified, and the Curran and modified GRI 3.0 mechanisms gave good predictions of the PDX of wet gas. The modified GRI 3.0 was further used in the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a 3-jet reactor at industrial conditions. The results showed that in the wet gas PDX process a higher C2H2 yield was obtained, and the optimal equivalence ratio slightly increased from 4.0 to 4.07 and the optimal quenching position moved from 0.4 to 0.45 m compared with the methane PDX process.

Abstract:The non-catalytic partial oxidation of methane under fuel-rich conditions was studied in a nozzle type reactor. The influences of preheating temperature, molar ratio of oxygen to CH4 and ethane and propane addition on the process were studied. The axial concentration profiles of species were measured with a mass spectrometer using a sampling probe that could be moved along the length of the reactor. The molar fraction of acetylene had a maximum value along axial distance, and increasing oxygen ratio led to decreasing of acetylene selectivity. Increasing the preheating temperature is favorable to acetylene production and the concentration of acetylene Was 4.52% when preheating temperature reached 620°C. Addition of ethane and propane resulted in the same amount of acetylene with less methane consumption. In the experimental conditions the axial distance of maximum acetylene molar fraction was kept in 80 mm unchanged.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation of acetylene is an important process for both ethylene purification and ethylene production from acetylene in the industry. Herein, we proposed liquid phase acetylene hydrogenation for high feed concentrations of C2H2 2 H 2 (8 %) and CO (20 %), which is used to produce ethylene as a subsequent process of partial oxidation of natural gas. The experiments were carried out in a stirred tank reactor using N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent and PdAg/SiO2 2 as catalyst. The liquid phase process obtained a much higher selectivity to ethylene (92 %) with only 8 % selectivity to green oil (GO) and C4, 4 , compared to 71 % ethylene selectivity in gas phase hydrogenation. Furthermore, in the liquid phase ethylene selectivity increased with increasing acetylene conversion, especially in the conversion range of 80-100 %. We developed a model incorporating reaction kinetics, mass transfer and reactor model to predict the acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity in liquid phase hydrogenation. The calculation results indicated that hydrogenation in the liquid phase operated at a lower acetylene concentration and a higher H2/C2H2 2 /C 2 H 2 ratio, especially under high acetylene conversions. This explains why the liquid phase hydrogenation of acetylene has a much higher selectivity to ethylene than the gas phase process.

Abstract:Partial combustion of natural gas is of great popularity in coproducing acetylene and syngas. Instead of macrokinetics, detailed chemistry modeling is performed to describe fuel-rich methane and ethane flames by using two typical combustion mechanisms: GRI-Mech 3.0 and Curran mechanism. A large uncertainty is found in the rate coefficient of C2H2 + OH CH2CO + H in GRI-Mech 3.0. A more chemically sound rate coefficient expression is proposed and GRI-Mech 3.0 and Curran mechanism are optimized for predicting acetylene profiles in the laminar premixed flames. Major species profiles in the flames are also calculated and compared with experimental data in the literature. The industrial partial combustion process is reasonably predicted by using the new rate coefficient within the framework of GRI-Mech 3.0. The optimum equivalence ratio is determined for attaining the maximum acetylene yield.

Abstract:Partial oxidation of methane in a unidirectional flow porous reactor is studied numerically. A number of partial oxidation mechanisms affecting H-2 and CO yields are comparatively analyzed using kinetic modeling for a range of rich and ultrarich equivalence ratios, residence times, and preset reactor temperatures. Temperature profiles, hydrogen yields, and methane conversion ratios are predicted for various equivalence ratios using two-temperature filtration combustion model with selected detailed chemical mechanism. The simulation results show that the hydrogen yield has two obvious sections: the ignition section and stream reforming section. The hydrogen yield increases with temperature and equivalence ratio increase. The two-temperature model results show a good qualitative agreement with the experimental results especially for the maximum solid temperature and hydrogen production. The wave starts to propagate downstream at phi > 1.5. The maximum solid temperature decreases from 1760 K to 1665 K as the equivalence ratio increases from 1.5 to 3.0. The H-2 yield is higher and methane conversion ratio is lower for high equivalence ratios, the thermal efficiency increases with the equivalence ratio increase. The H2 conversion ratio and H-2 energy efficiency reach their maximum values at phi = 2.25, while CO conversion ratio and syngas energy efficiency reach maximum values at phi = 2.0. The results obtained for a unidirectional flow reactor are important for model validation and predictive modeling of a reciprocal flow reactor.
Experimental Study on the Ethane-Reburning Process at Several Air/Fuel Equivalence Ratios and High Temperatures

Abstract:An investigation of the ethane-reburning process was performed using an electrically heated test rig with a non-intrusive multi-point sampling system. The concentration profiles of CH4, H-2, C2H2, O-2, CO, CO2, NO, HCN, and NO + HCN at several air/fuel equivalence ratios were measured at various elevated temperatures. The experimental results show that, at high temperatures, the weakly reducing atmospheres associated with air/fuel equivalence ratios in the range of 0.96-0.99 are suitable for the reduction of NO to N-2. Under these conditions, C2H2 is able to act as the main reducing component in the ethane-reburning process.

Abstract:The oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene (ODHE) by Pt-based catalysts is a complex reaction involving endothermic dehydrogenation reactions occurring in gas and exothermic oxidation reactions occurring on the catalyst surface. It is a challenge to figure out its reaction mechanism. Kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) method was employed to analyze 82 possible elementary reactions on Pt/Al 2 O 3 . The path of CH 3 -CH 3 *→CH 3 -CH 2 *→CH 3 -CH*→C 2 H 4 * on the catalyst surface and the cracking of ethane in the gas phase were the main pathways for ethylene formation, which both needed heat supply. The step of C*+O*→CO* was the main oxidation path providing heat, with C* from C-C bond breaking or dehydrogenation of CH x species. The result was used to establish a particle-resolved fixed-bed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. The autothermal equilibrium was achieved at an inlet temperature of 773 K, a flow rate of 2 m/s, and a molar ratio (C 2 H 6 :O 2 ) of 3:1. Besides, the oxidation reaction was enhanced by increasing the inlet molar ratio, which meant that the C* species increased. The inlet velocity strengthened the heat transfer and a higher inlet velocity resulted in a lower bed temperature. The multi-scale simulation results can provide a reference for the design of an ethylene industrial reactor. Abstract:The oxidation of ethylene (C2H4) was performed in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at the equivalence ratios (Φ) of 0.5, 1.0, and 3.0, within the temperature range of 650–1000 K, at 12.0 atm. Six C1-C3 hydrocarbons and four oxygenated species were identified and quantified by using online GC and GC-MS. Among them, acrolein, propanal, and epoxypropane were newly detected compared to previous oxidation studies of C2H4. A detailed kinetic model involving 125 species and 671 reactions was developed, and its predictions were found to be in reasonable agreement with the measured data. Generally, the peak concentrations of hydrocarbons and oxygenated species tend to increase with the increase of Φ, while the inorganic substances exhibit contrary tendencies. Rate-of-production analysis indicates that C2H4 consumption is generally governed by the addition of H-atom and OH radicals, which mostly transform to C2H5 under rich conditions and to CH2CH2OH under lean condition. Sensitivity analysis reveals that the reactions H2O2(+M) 2OH(+M) and CH2O + O2 HCO + HO2 are the most promoting and inhibiting reactions for C2H4 consumption, respectively. By comparing the results of 1.0-59.2 atm, it can be found that the increase of pressure leads to the reduction of the initial reaction temperature. Under higher pressure, the reaction temperature interval of C2H4 shifts towards a lower temperature. The current mechanism could reproduce the literature-reported ignition delay times and laminar flame velocities under wide pressures. The results will enrich the understanding of the high-pressure oxidation of C2H4 and serve as a foundation for developing large hydrocarbon fuel models.

Abstract:The present study aims to increase the selectivity of C 2 H 2 in the partial oxidation process of methane, employing design of experiments (DOE) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Central composite design is used to design tests, and analysis of variance is performed to evaluate the percentage of contribution of operating factors on system performance. The operating factors considered in the analysis are preheating temperature, O 2 /CH 4 ratio, and inlet velocity. The system responses are selectivity of C 2 H 2 and conversion of CH 4 . Furthermore, an optimization method using response surface methodology is utilized to determine the optimal values of operating factors that lead to the best system performance. The findings indicate that increasing the preheating temperature and O 2 /CH 4 ratio boosts the selectivity of C 2 H 2 and reduces the methane conversion percentage, while increasing the inlet velocity has the opposite effect. The optimization method indicates that the maximum selectivity of C 2 H 2 is achieved with conversion of CH 4 of 95% under optimal conditions, namely preheating temperature of 1151.13 K, inlet velocity of 222.8 m/s, and O 2 /CH 4 ratio of 0.59.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for describing the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) carried out in fixed-bed reactors for olefin production. Initially, a single pellet model was developed and implemented to describe the heat and mass transfer within the pellet and between the gaseous and solid phases. Subsequently, sensitivity analyses were performed to assess the impact of pellet arrangement and feed conditions on the heat and mass transfer rates, subsequently affecting concentration and temperature profiles. As indicated by the simulations, a high ethylene content could be obtained with the increase in the CH4/O2 ratio, aligning well with previous experimental studies. Furthermore, it was observed that pellet arrangement can significantly affect the reactor performance. Additionally, the behavior of temperature and concentration in the gaseous and solid phases can be very different, such that pseudo-homogeneous modeling approaches should not be assumed a priori. Finally, the simulated temperature differences between the gaseous and solid phases were very substantial and above 100 °C, indicating the occurrence of catalyst auto-ignition behavior.

Abstract:Abstract The direct conversion of low alkane such as ethane into high-value-added chemicals has remained a great challenge since the development of natural gas utilization. Herein, we achieve an efficient one-step conversion of ethane to C 2 oxygenates on a Rh 1 /AC-SNI catalyst under a mild condition, which delivers a turnover frequency as high as 158.5 h −1 . 18 O isotope-GC–MS shows that the formation of ethanol and acetaldehyde follows two distinct pathways, where oxygen and water directly participate in the formation of ethanol and acetaldehyde, respectively. In situ formed intermediate species of oxygen radicals, hydroxyl radicals, vinyl groups, and ethyl groups are captured by laser desorption ionization/time of flight mass spectrometer. Density functional theory calculation shows that the activation barrier of the rate-determining step for acetaldehyde formation is much lower than that of ethanol, leading to the higher selectivity of acetaldehyde in all the products.
