Abstract:Li-rich cathode material Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 is an important candidate material for Li-ion batteries. However, due to its low initial coulombic efficiency, poor cycle performance and rate performance, its development has been limited. In order to stabilize the crystal structure and improve the electrochemical performance, CeO2 was coated on the surface of Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 by surface engineering strategy while doping trace amount of Ce. The results show that this modification method greatly reduced the Li/Ni mixing level in the material and mitigated the oxygen loss, which was beneficial to improve the electrochemical performance of the material. As expected, the initial cycle coulombic efficiency of the modified sample (4wt % - CeO2) increased by 27.5% at 1 C, and the discharge capacity increased by 28.4% after 50 charge-discharge cycles at 0.2 C in the voltage range of 2.0 V to 4.8 V. In particular, the discharge specific capacity increased by 90.4% at a high rate of 10 C. This strongly proves that the strategy has great prospects in improving the electrochemical performance of Li-ion battery electrode materials.

Abstract:To enhance the cyclic stability and high rate performance of the advanced Lithium-rich and manganese-based layered structure cathode materials, the Li1.20[Mn0.54-x Ni0.13Co0.13Ce x ] O2 (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03) were synthesized by partially substituting Mn4+ with different amounts of Ce3+ via the traditional co-precipitation method. The effect of Ce3+ doping on the crystal structure, particles morphology and electrochemical properties of the Li1.20[Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13]O2 was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), galvanostatic charge-discharge tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement. The XRD, SEM and EDS results demonstrated that the cathodes after Ce3+ doping delivered the larger crystal lattice parameters, the lower cation mixing between Ni2+ and Li+ and the smaller size of cathode particles. Therefore, the superior rate capacity and cyclic performance were obtained for the Ce3+ doped cathodes. Particularly, the Li1.20[Mn0.52Ni0.13Co0.13Ce0.02]O2 demonstrated the optimal electrochemical properties, which delivered a high discharge capacity of 136.7 mAhg-1 at 5C high rate and a high capacity retention of 91.2% at 2C rate after 100 cycles. While the pristine cathode only exhibited a discharge capacity of 92.8 mAhg-1 at 5C rate, 43.9 mAhg-1 smaller than that of the Li1.20[Mn0.52Ni0.13Co0.13Ce0.02]O2. In addition, it retained a discharge capacity of 112.3 mAhg-1 with a capacity retention of only 81.5% after 100 cycles at 2C rate. The larger capacity retention and superior rate performance of Ce3+ doped cathodes could be ascribed to the fast Li+ diffusing speed, the high cation ordering and lower charge transfer resistance during cycling.

Abstract:Structural and interfacial instabilities hinder the large-scale application of Ni-rich layered LiNi1-xCoxMnyO2 (x + y ≤ 0.4) cathode materials to electric vehicle (EV). Therefore, this manuscript introduces synergistic modification of Ce doping and CeO2 coating to enhance electrochemical performance of LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode material. Ce doping improves the inner structure stability, reduces the cation mixing, and extends the lithium ion diffusion pathway due to high bond dissociation energy of Ce–O and large rad radius of cerium ion. CeO2 coating layer protects the cathode/electrolyte interface from side reactions. The testing results of SEM, XPS, etc. prove that Ce doping and coating are introduced into LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 cathode material successfully. Ce doping and coating modification enhance cycling performance. The capacity retention of modified sample is 93.3% at 1 C rate between 2.8 and 4.3 V after 100 cycles. The synergistic effects of cerium doping and ceria coating modification on the electrochemical performance and structural stability could be extended to develop high capacity cathode.

Collaboratively enhancing electrochemical properties of LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 through doping and coating of quadrivalent elements

Abstract:Ni-rich layered oxides (Ni ≥ 80%) with high energy density have become a mainstream cathode material for Li-ion batteries. However, irreversible phase transitions and interface instability are deep-seated challenges in commercializing Ni-rich materials. This study used a collaborative modification strategy involving doping and coating with quadrivalent elements to construct Ni-rich materials. In particular, introducing tetravalent Zr makes the valence change of Ni (2+ to 4+) more accessible to complete spontaneously during the charging and discharging processes, which significantly suppresses the cationic mixing and irreversible phase transition (H2 ↔ H3). Combining the strategy of constructing CeO 2 coatings on the surface and interfacial spinel-like phases improves the Li + diffusion kinetics and interfacial stability. Simultaneously, part of the strongly oxidizing four-valence Ce 4+ diffuses to the surface layer, further increasing the average valence state of Ni. Therefore, LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM)-Zr@Ce achieves 78.5% outstanding retention at 1.0C after 200 cycles within 3.0–4.3 V compared to unmodified NCM with 41.4% retention. The improved cyclic stability can be attributed to the collaborative modification strategy of the quadrivalent elements, which provides an effective synergistic modification strategy for developing high-performance Li-ion battery cathode materials.

Abstract:Ni-rich cathodes exhibit appealing properties, such as high capacity density, low cost, and prominent energy density. However, the inferior ionic conductivity and bulk structural degradation become bottlenecks for Ni-rich cathodes and severely limit their commercial utilization. Traditional coating and doping methods suffer fatal drawbacks in functioning as a unit and cannot radically promote material performance to meet the needs of Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we successfully devised an ingenious and facile synthetic method to establish Ni-rich oxides with a La2Zr2O7 coating and Zr doping. The coating layer improves the ion diffusion kinetics and enhances Li-ion transportation while Zr doping effectively suppresses the phase transition of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode. Owing to the synergetic effect of Zr doping and La2Zr2O7 coating, the modified material shows prominent initial discharge capacity of 184.7 mAh g−1 at 5 °C and maintains 177.5 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at 1 °C. Overall, the proposed feasible electrode design method can have a far-reaching impact on further fabrication of advanced cathodes for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:With the rapid popularization of new energy vehicles, the demands for high energy density power batteries and related cathode materials are becoming increasingly urgent. Layered Li–Ni–Co–Mn–O cathode materials are attracting much attention because of their high specific capacity; however, their cycling and high voltage performance need to be further improved. Herein, single crystal structure LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials, prepared using a multiple-step calcination process, are further controllably doped with fluorine to improve the Li storage performance. Fluorine doping not only improves the crystal space but also increases the Co3+ and lattice oxygen content, therefore promoting the lithium ion diffusion and crystal structure stability of layered LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2. With an appropriate amount of fluorine doping, the LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 single crystal material demonstrates a remarkable specific capacity of 202.7 mAh g−1 (0.1C) and a high capacity retention of 86.6% after 100 cycles (1.0C), higher than the control sample and promising for application in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A layered Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 cathode is coated with a CePO4 layer via a simple precipitation method. The pristine and CePO4-coated Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results indicate that CePO4 has been uniformly coated on the Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2. Charge-discharge tests show that the CePO4-coated Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 has an obviously enhanced electrochemical performance compared with the pristine sample: the initial coulombic efficiency from 88.26% to 92.19%, rate capability from 6 to 110 mA h g(-1) at 10 degrees C, high-temperature performance from 59.5 to 219.6 mA h g(-1) at 55 degrees C after 20 cycles, and low-temperature performance from 128.3 to 246.7 mA h g(-1) at -20 degrees C. According to the analysis from dc impedance and electrochemical impedance spectra, the improvements on the electrochemical performance are mainly because the coated CePO4 layer can reduce side reactions of Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 with the electrolyte, and thus form the cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) layer with enhanced Li+ diffusion. In addition, the CePO4 layer significantly improves the thermal stability of the coexisting systems of the charged cathode with the electrolyte. Therefore, CePO4 coating will be a promising approach to improve the electrochemical performance and thermal stability of Li-rich layered oxide cathode materials.

Abstract:LiNixCoyMn1−x-yO2 (NCM) (x ≥ 0.5) have received more and more attention due to high energy density, which have been widely utilized in the fields of mobile electronic equipment and new energy vehicles. Nevertheless, these materials suffer severe capacity attenuation and inferior rate performance, hindering their commercialization. In this work, we design an effective strategy: co-modification of Nb doping and LiBO2 coating (NB-NCM) to stabilize the internal structure, reduce cation mixing, alleviate external side reactions and improve electrochemical performance. Material characterizations and electrochemical measurements were operated to comprehensively value the effect of co-modification on the structure, topography and electrochemical properties of NCM materials. As a result, Nb is doped into the bulk of the material and the surface of particle is uniformly coated with LiBO2. In addition, for the NB-NCM electrode, the discharge capacity retained 90.90% at 0.5 C rate after 50 cycles, which proves that co-modification is an effective method to stabilize structure and enhance electrochemical performance.

Abstract:LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 is a widely used commercial cathode material in the fields of consumer electronics and electric vehicles. However, its energy density still falls short of the standard and needs to be improved. The most effective method is to increase the cut-off voltage, but this will result in a drop in capacity. In this study, a LiF layer is coated on the surface of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 via an in situ method. It is found that the LiF layer may protect materials from side reactions with electrolytes, improve the interfacial stability, and enhance the cyclic performance. The bare sample shows relatively poor cycling stability, with capacity retention rates of 65.9% (0.2 C) and 12.8% (5 C) after 100 cycles, while 1% LiF-coated NCM has higher cycling stability with capacity retention rates of 83.4% (0.2 C) and 73.3% (5 C) after 100 cycles, respectively. Our findings suggest that a LiF surface layer could be a useful means of boosting the electrochemical performance of NCM cathode materials.

Abstract:Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) is one of the dominant cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. Here a simple, efficient and scalable surface doping technique is successfully demonstrated, which can be readily used in mass production of cathode materials. For the first time neodymium oxide (Nd2O3) has been employed as the surface doping agent. The Nd-doped NMC shows greatly improved cycling and rate performance, and the enhanced cycling stability has been demonstrated in full pouch cells, with a 17.5% increase in capacity retention after 300 cycles. Fewer cracks have been observed in the doped NMC after cycling, andin situX-ray diffraction reveals the suppressed lattice collapse by Nd doping. Greatly suppressed surface phase change has been confirmed by HR-TEM and EELS. The result suggests great promise in using this dry doping technique to enhance the electrochemical performance of NMC cathodes.

Abstract:The powders of layered structured LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode material are synthesized by a thermal polymerization method in the temperatures range from 750 degrees C to 950 degrees C in air and oxygen. It is found that the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 powder sintered in oxygen has significantly decreased degree of cationic mixing. The discharge capacities of the samples sintered in oxygen are higher than those of the samples sintered in air. The sample sintered at 900 degrees C in oxygen has the highest ratio of I-003/I-104 and the highest initial discharge capacities of 200 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 0.1C in the voltage range of 2.8-4.5 V. In order to improve the cycling stability of the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrode, a series of Zr-doped LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrodes (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3-xZrxO2, x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05) are also prepared. The LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3-xZrxO2 electrodes show much enhanced cycling performance compared to the un-doped LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3-xZrxO2 electrode, The LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.29Zr0.01O2 electrode exhibits the best electrochemical performance with the capacity retention of 93.92% after 100 cycles at 0.2C in the voltage range of 2.8-4.5 V, while the un-doped LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 electrode exhibits capacity retention of only 83.33% after 100 cycles. The LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.29Zr0.01O2 electrode also shows obvious improved rate capability relative to that of the un-doped electrode. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials are promising for energy storage applications ascribed to the high-energy density but suffer from inferior structural stability and cyclic performance, especially under high-rate conditions. In this study, we designed self-assembled hollow microspheres with multifunctional interfacial cerium modification to provide optimized crystal robustness and oxygen defects, thus strengthening Li + insertion/extraction kinetics and suppressing oxygen release. In particular, the synthetic condition to generate regular hollow microspheres and appropriate amount of cerium to modify the cathode were investigated in detail. As a result, Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 (LMNCO) with 3% cerium content (molar ratio to transition metals) achieved 291.4 mAh·g −1 discharge capacity at 0.1 C within 2.0–4.8 V and maintained a capacity of 189.3 mAh·g −1 with favorable cycle stability at 5 C. The combination of morphology design and surface modification enhanced the interfacial stability and electrochemical properties of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode material effectively, which demonstrated great practical significance in the development of high-rate lithium ion batteries.

LiNbO3 Coating and F- Doping Stabilize the Crystal Structure and Ameliorate the Interface of LiNi0.88Co0.06Mn0.03Al0.03O2 to Improve the Electrochemical Properties and Safety Capability

Abstract:Ni-rich layered materials Li[NixCoyMnzAl1-x-y-z]O2 (x > 0.8) are regarded as the competitive cathode for practical applications in lithium-ion batteries owing to the large discharging capacity. Nevertheless, the strong oxidation activity, the poor structure, and the thermal stability at the electrode-electrolyte interface would lead to much trouble, for example, inferior electrochemical properties and acute safety issues. To ameliorate the above problems, this work reports a strategy for the double modification of F- doping and LiNbO3 covering in LiNi0.88Co0.06Mn0.03Al0.03O2 cathode via using high-temperature calcining and ball-milling technology. As a result, the cathodes after F- doping and LiNbO3 covering not only demonstrate a more stabilized crystal structure and particle interface but also reduce the release of high-activity oxygen species to ameliorate the thermal runaway. The electrochemical tests show that the LiNbO3-F--modified cathode displays a superior rate capability of 159.3 mAh g-1 at 10.0 C and has the predominant capability retention of 92.1% in the 200th cycle at 25 °C, much superior than those (125.4 mAh g-1 and 84.0%) of bare cathode. Thus, the F- doped and LiNbO3-coated Ni-rich oxides could be a promising cathode to realize the high capacity and a stabilized interface.
Effect of Mn Doping on the Structure and Electrochemical Performance of LiNi0.7Co0.3O2

Abstract:The precursor of LiNi0.7Co0.3-xMnxO2(0≤x≤0.15) was synthesized by sol-gel method.XRD,XPS,SEM and galvanostatic chargedischarge methods were used to study the structure and electrochemical performance of the final products.With the increasing of Mn content,the lattice parameters of the products increased and the degree of ordered layered structure became weak.The initial specific discharge capacities(175～189 mAh/g)and capacity retention(92%)after 30 cycles of LiNi0.7Co0.3-xMnxO2(0.02≤x≤0.07) were better than those of blank sample LiNi0.7Co0.3O2(170 mAh/g,86%).The initial speci-fic discharge capacity of LiNi0.7Co0.25Mn0.05O2(189 mAh/g) was the highest and its capacity retention after 30 cycles was 94%.The experimental results showed that Mn doping in small quantity was effective to improve the cycle stability and reversible capacity of the material.

Abstract:Lithium-rich manganese-based oxides are included in high-capacity cathodes. Herein we introduce a certain amount of Mg and Na into lithium-rich manganese-based oxide microspheres to overcome the weak cycling performance and poor rate capacity. This work uses the hydrothermal method combined with the high-temperature solid-phase method and CH3COONa and C4H14MgO8 as dopants. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical characterization are performed to systematically assess the effect of Na and Mg element doping on the morphology, structure and electrochemical characteristics of Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2. The results show that the material has excellent electrochemical performance. These improvements could be related to the presence of Na in Li layers and Mg in TM layers, which can speed up Li-ion diffusion kinetics and improve ionic and electronic conductivity. DFT calculations demonstrate that the injection of Na and Mg reduces the lithium-ion migration barrier energy. This dual-doped modification technique may help researchers better understand how to build high-capacity and stable cathode materials for LIBs.

Abstract:LiNi x Co y Mn1–x–y O2 (NCM) is identified as the most typical cathode material on account of high specific capacity, cheaper cost, and good security. Nevertheless, the storage environment of NCM is inferior, whose surface lithium compounds could cause side reactions and corrode the electrode. Herein, we propose a strategy to synergistically modify the NCM cathode material with the ionic conductor (LiBO2) and electronic conductor [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), PEDOT], whose mechanism was comprehensively investigated in detail using material characterizations and electrochemical measurements. Benefiting from the multiple effects of the dual conductor, surface residual alkali and impurities of NCM were significantly reduced, and the corresponding side reactions was effectively inhibited, which further improved the interfacial stability and slowed down the formation of rock salt impurity phases. As a consequence, the modified sample exhibited an outstanding electrochemical property with a retention of 95.44% at 1 C after 100 cycles, which provides a new understanding for the modification strategy and efficient service of nickel-rich cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A facile method of physically mixing LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NMC) with a certain amount of LiFe0.4Mn0.6PO4 (LFMP) is found to be very effective for improving the high rate cycling performance of NMC. At a high current rate of 2C, the capacity remnants of the composite cathode with 10 wt% LFMP is about 115 mAh g(-1), much higher than 54 mAh g(-1) of the single NMC. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses show that the composite cathode with 10 wt% LFMP presents the lower charge transfer resistance and two magnitude higher diffusion coefficient of Li+ in comparison to the single NMC, which contributes to the improved cycling performance.
