Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:This paper discusses fundamental limits in photonic switching devices taking into account of the material’s optical nonlinearity as well as optical field enhancement within the device structures. Quantum dot materials in corporation with optical cavity structures are expected to be a powerful combination for ultrafast, energy-efficient photonic switches. Abstract:All-optical switches are among the most important parts of integrated photonics. Ultrahigh speed and ultralow energy consumption are two necessary indexes of all-optical switches. Traditionally, all-optical switches are based on concepts such as micro-ring resonators, surface plasmon polaritons, photonic crystals, and metamaterials. However, such platforms cannot satisfy the demand for high performance of all-optical switches. To overcome the limited response time and energy consumption, recent studies have introduced new applications of such physics as parity–time symmetry, exceptional points, topological insulators, and bound states in a continuum. Such physical concepts not only provide promising research avenues for the all-optical switch but also broaden the design channel. This is expected to achieve ultracompact, ultrafast, and high-capacity all-optical information processing.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, materials with periodic dielectric structures, are able to control the propagation states of photons owing to the so-called photonic-bandgap effect1. Nonlinear photonic crystals, whose refractive-index distribution can be tuned optically, have been used to demonstrate all-optical switching2. However, a high pump intensity is usually required because the nonlinear optical coefficient of conventional materials is relatively small3. Here we report ultrafast and low-power photonic-crystal all-optical switching based on strong optical nonlinearity enhancement due to excited-state interelectron transfer. Compared with the case without nonlinearity enhancement, the switching operation power is reduced by four orders of magnitude while the ultrafast response time, of the order of a picosecond, is maintained. This provides a strategy for constructing photonic materials with large nonlinearity and studying ultrafast low-power integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical switch based on selfassembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) within a vertical cavity. Two essential aspects of this novel device have been investigated, which includes the QD/cavity nonlinearity with appropriately designed mirrors and the intersubband carrier dynamics inside QDs. Vertical-reflection-type switches have been fabricated with an asymmetric cavity that consists of 12 periods of GaAs/Al0.8Ga0.2As for the front mirror and 25 periods for the back mirror. All-optical switching via the QD excited states has been achieved with a time constant down to 23 ps, wavelength tunability over 30 nm, and ultralow power consumption less than 1 fJ/μm2 . These results demonstrate that QDs within a vertical cavity have great advantages to realize low-powerconsumption polarization-insensitive micrometer-sized switching devices for the future optical communication and signal processing systems.

Abstract:Microstructured all-optical switching, possessing the unique function of light controlling light, is an important part of the on-chip ultra-fast optical connectivity network and integrated logic computing chip. Microstructured all-optical switching has attracted extensive research interest, the latest great developments of which have also yielded progress in nanophotonics, nonlinear optics, optical communications, and integrated optics, etc. The emergence of two-dimensional materials with good third-order optical nonlinearity provides an important driving force for the improvement of all-optical switches. This paper reviews the implementation principles, novel configurations, improved performance indexes, and research progress based on different two-dimensional materials for micro/nano all-optical switching. Not only is a systematic discussion of the current state provided, but also, a brief outlook is afforded on the remaining challenges in the pursuit of the application of practical on-chip microstructured all-optical switching that is based on two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:Ultra-small all-optical switches are of importance in highly integrated optical communication and computing networks. However, the weak nonlinear light-matter interactions in natural materials present an enormous challenge to realize efficiently switching for the ultra-short interaction lengths. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a submicron bidirectional all-optical plasmonic switch with an asymmetric T-shape single slit. Sharp asymmetric spectra as well as significant field enhancements (about 18 times that in the conventional slit case) occur in the symmetry-breaking structure. Consequently, both of the surface plasmon polaritons propagating in the opposite directions on the metal surface are all-optically controlled inversely at the same time with the on/off switching ratios of >6 dB for the device lateral dimension of <1 μm. Moreover, in such a submicron structure, the coupling of free-space light and the on-chip bidirectional switching are integrated together. This submicron bidirectional all-optical switch may find important applications in the highly integrated plasmonic circuits.

Abstract:Achieving ultrafast all-optical switching in a silicon waveguide geometry is a key milestone on the way to an integrated platform capable of handling the increasing demands for higher speed and higher capacity for information transfer. Given the weak electro-optic and thermo-optic effects in silicon, there has been intense interest in hybrid structures in which that switching could be accomplished by integrating another material into the waveguide, including the phase-changing material, vanadium dioxide (VO2). It has long been known that the phase transition in VO2 can be triggered by ultrafast laser pulses, and that pump-laser fluence is a critical parameter governing the recovery time of thin films irradiated by femtosecond laser pulses near 800 nm. However, thin-film experiments are not a priori reliable guides to using VO2 for all-optical switching in on-chip silicon photonics because of the large changes in VO2 optical constants in the telecommunications band, the requirement of low insertion loss, and the limits on switching energy permissible in integrated photonic systems. Here we report the first measurements to show that the reversible, ultrafast photo-induced phase transition in VO2 can be harnessed to achieve sub-picosecond switching when small VO2 volumes are integrated in a silicon waveguide as a modulating element. Switching energies above threshold are of order 600 fJ/switch. These results suggest that VO2 can now be pursued as a strong candidate for all-optical switching with sub-picosecond on-off times.

Abstract:Multifunctional stimuli-responsive luminescent and optical switching is extremely crucial for wide advanced photonic applications, but it remains a challenging objective for halide perovskites. Herein, by performing single-crystal to single-crystal (SC–SC) transformation as a dynamic molecular strategy, we realized a reversible triple-mode photoluminescence, radioluminescence (PL and RL), and nonlinear optical (NLO) switching in a pair of zero-dimensional (0D) hybrid cuprous halides of [ETPP]2Cu4Br6 and [ETPP]CuBr2. Specifically, [ETPP]2Cu4Br6 and [ETPP]CuBr2 display highly efficient yellow and green light emissions under UV light excitation with the highest quantum yield of up to near unity. Simultaneously, identical radioluminescence can also be activated by using X-ray as RL with a light yield of up to 57,974 photons MeV–1, surpassing most of the previously reported hybrid cuprous halides. Most remarkably, reversible SC–SC transformation between them can be realized in an ethanol impregnation-heating process, which provides reversible PL/RL transitions in two light-emitting states. Additionally, this process is also accompanied by transition between the centrosymmetric NLO-inactive [ETPP]2Cu4Br6 and noncentrosymmetric NLO-active [ETPP]CuBr2 through reversible second harmonic generation (SHG) “silent-active” switching. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported triple-mode reversible PL, RL, and SHG switching in halide perovskite chemistry, which can realize advanced applications in data storage, information security, optical logic gates, etc.

Abstract:As the basic structure of all-optical computing basic logic unit, the research progress of all-optical switch affects the development of all-optical computing and even the development of integrated optical field. An ultrafast all-optical switch with silicon-based silica structure is designed. The extinction ratio and the switch response time of the optically controlled optical switch are measured through two-color pump-probe experiment. The design of ultrafast all-optical switch with the switch intensity ratio of 7:1 and the switching time of 500 fs is realized.

Abstract:Photonic crystal all-optical switching is realized in two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene]. Organic polymer films are fabricated by a slow evaporation method. Under resonant excitation, the organic matrix provides very large third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. An operating pump energy as low as 514 pJ/cm 2 and a high switching efficiency of 70% are achieved for the photonic crystal optical switching. A switching time of 45.6 ps is maintained due to fast Forster transfer of excitons.

Abstract:A gradual transition from electrical to optical networks is accompanying the rapid progress of telecommunication technology. The urge for enhanced transmission capacity and speed is dictating this trend. In fact, large volumes of data encoded on optical signals can be transported rapidly over long distances. Their propagation along specific routes across a communication network is ensured by a combination of optical fibers and optoelectronic switches. It is becoming apparent, however, that the interplay between the routing electrical stimulations and the traveling optical signals will not be able to support the terabit-per-second capacities that will be needed in the near future. Electrical inputs cannot handle the immense parallelism potentially possible with optical signals. Operating principles to control optical signals with optical signals must be developed. Molecular and supramolecular switches are promising candidates for the realization of innovative materials for information technology. Binary digits can be encoded in their chemical, electrical, or optical inputs and outputs to execute specific logic functions. We have developed a simple strategy to gate optical signals with optical signals by using a photoactive molecular switch. We have demonstrated that NAND, NOR, and NOT operations can be implemented exclusively with optical inputs and optical outputs coupling from one to three switching elements. Our remarkably simple approach to all-optical switching might lead to the development of a new generation of devices for digital processing and communication technology.

Abstract:Optical switches are desired in telecom and datacom as an upgrade to electrical ones for lower power consumption and expenses while improving bandwidth and network transparency. Compact, integrated optical switches are attractive thanks to their scalability, readiness for mass production, and robustness against mechanical disturbances. The basic unit relies mostly on a microring resonator or a Mach–Zehnder interferometer for binary "bar" and "cross" switching. Such single-mode structures are often wavelength / polarization dependent, sensitive to phase errors and loss-prone. Furthermore, when they are cascaded to a network, the number of control units grows quickly with the port count, causing high complexity in electronic wiring and drive circuit integration. Herein, we propose a new switching method by thermo-optic waveguide lens. Essentially, this multimode waveguide forms a square law medium by a pair of heater electrodes and focuses light within a chip by robust 1 × 1 imaging. A 1 × 24 basic switch is demonstrated with 32 electrodes and only two are biased at a time for a chosen output. By two-level cascading, the switch expands to 576 ports and only four electrodes are needed for one path. The chips are fabricated on wafer scale in a low-budget laboratory without resorting to foundries. Yet, the performance goes beyond state of the art for low insertion loss, low wavelength dependence and low polarization dependence. This work provides an original, alternative, and practical route to construct large-scale optical switches, enabling broad applications in telecom, datacom and photonic computing.
