Abstract:Metallic materials with heterogeneous microstructures are reported to exhibit an excellent combination of high strength and ductility. Although a vast majority of studies have been focused on their local microstructure evolution before and after plastic deformation, the change of their local mechanical properties, rather than global mechanical properties, has rarely been studied. Here, we employ a high-speed nanoindentation method to characterize the local elastic moduli and nanohardness of a cold-rolled, flash-annealed, and tempered austenitic stainless steel with a heterogeneous lamellar microstructure. Such steel consists of hard reversed austenite and soft partially recrystallized austenite. The nanohardness changes from a heterogeneous distribution before a tensile test to a homogeneous distribution after the test, because of a higher work-hardening rate in soft microstructure domains than that in hard ones. Moreover, martensitic transformation at crack tips increases the nanohardness and elastic modulus. Our study offers a new opportunity to investigate and prove the hetero-deformation mechanism of heterostructured materials using high-speed nanoindentation.
