Abstract:In this study, a method of repetitive high stress loading–unloading with small plastic deformation is designed to simulate the extreme service conditions of a martensite stainless steel (S04). Tensile and impact tests are used to evaluate its service performance and safety. It is found that this novel method can strengthen and toughen this steel simultaneously. With an increase in cyclic number, this steel is first strain-hardened and then structure-softened. Microstructure evolution indicates that the significant dislocations proliferation dominates the strain hardening during the early loading cycles, while the formation of deformation twins dominates the structure softening during the latter cycles.
