Abstract:Superhard materials are solids whose Vickers hardness is beyond 40 GPa. They have wide applications in industry such as cutting and polishing tools, wear-resistant coatings. Most preparations of superhard materials are conducted under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, not only for scientific investigations, but also for the practical applications. In this paper, we would introduce the recent progress on the design and preparations of novel superhard materials, mainly on nanopolycrystalline diamond, B–C–N superhard solid solutions, and cubic-Si3N4/diamond nanocomposites prepared under ultrahigh pressure and high temperature(HPHT), using multi-anvil apparatus based on the hinged-type cubic press. Bulk materials of all these superhard phases have been successfully synthesized and are systematically tested. We emphasize that ultra-HPHT method plays an important role in the scientific research and industrial production of superhard materials. It provides the driving forces for the light elements forming novel superhard phases as well as the way for sintering high-density nanosuperhard materials.

Abstract:Single-phase BC4N can be formed at high pressure and temperature, starting with either a mixture of diamond and cubic boron nitride or graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. The samples exhibit extreme Vickers hardness (85 +/- 4 GPa), reaching the hardness of single crystal diamond. Within a random solid solution model, the X-ray diffraction patterns of cubic BCxN solid solutions were calculated. The results indicate that the prepared B-C-N materials are continuous solid solutions with a zinc-blende structure. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel method to sinter tungsten bulk material under high pressure without any additives. The sintering temperatures were greatly reduced in our experiments. The sintered samples can achieve near-full densification (relative density of 99.5%), and have fracture toughness of about 50% higher than that from the traditional methods, without sacrificing hardness. Moreover, the grain sizes of the sintered samples maintained in the initio range. The sintering kinetics, microstructure evolutions, and relationships of mechanical properties versus pressure–temperature conditions were also discussed.

Abstract:Well-crystallized BCN compounds have been prepared from melamine (C3H6N6) and boron oxidation (B2O3) at pressures above 25 GPa and temperatures higher than 2500 K. The morphology of synthetic BCN samples was characterized transmission electron microscope. The atomic B/C/N ratio was determined by Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). Abstract:Recently, the structural fragments of the 2H, 4H, 9R, and 15R diamond polytypes were found in the synthesized diamond crystals by high-angle annular dark-field (HAADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). This work mainly uses onion carbon as a raw material, a complex layered structure, thus attracting us to focus on the influence of precursor structure on the formation of diamond polytypes. Herein, we selected nine graphitic structures with different stacking sequences from previous work to study their phase transition under different compression methods using DFT (density functional theory) calculations. Most of them appeared as interlayer slips during compression and finally produced 3C, 2H, and 9R diamond polytypes. The hexagonal character unit (h) was derived only from the initial AA stacking layer in the graphite precursor after analyzing the phase transition process. Meanwhile, the design of a suitable preparation scheme that maximizes the retention of stacking faults from the precursor into the product is the key to the synthesis of non-3C(cubic) diamonds. Thus, this study provides insights into the high-pressure transformation of graphite systems with diverse structures and illustrates the reasons why non-3C diamonds are rare.

Abstract:We constructed a series of novel 3D-BC2N structures that can be obtained by compressing well-mixed carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube arrays. Sequential theoretical calculations indicated a variety of electronic and mechanical properties, such as superhardness, tunable band gap, and ductility, for these novel 3D-BC2N polymorphs. In specific, 3D (6,6)-II, 3D (4,4)-II, 3D (8,8), 3D (6,6)-I and 3D (8,0) are energetically more favorable than previously proposed diamond-like beta-BC2N; the hardness of 3D (6,6)-II can reach a remarkably high value of 72 GPa; 3D (6,0) and 3D (8,0) are direct gap superhard phases; and 3D (10,0) has a semimetallic nature.
Effect of High Temperature-High Pressure Treatment on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Cu-Cr Alloy

Abstract:The microstructure of the Cu-Cr alloy prepared by infiltration before and after different pressures treatment at 900 degrees C for 10 min was observed by metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). And the mechanical properties were measured by nanoindenter, hardness tester and tensile testing machine. According to the experimental results, the effects of high pressure treatment on the mechanical properties were discussed. The results showed that the hardness of Cu matrix and Cr phase were 114Hv and 194Hv under the pressure of 3 GPa, which were 18.75% and 10.23% higher than those of the infiltrated alloy. Also, the hardness and compression yield strength of Cu-Cr alloy were 134 HB and 241 MPa after 3 GPa pressure treatment, respectively, 11.67%, 19.31% higher than those of the infiltrated alloy. On the basis of analysis, the high pressure treatment can improve the compactness of Cu-Cr alloys, promote the precipitation of nanometer Cr particles and increase the hardness and elastic modulus of Cu matrix and Cr phase, resulting in the improvement of hardness and compression yield strength in Cu-Cr alloys. In the range of 1 similar to 6 GPa, the hardness and compression yield strength of alloys increase with the increase of pressure. However, these mechanical properties of Cu-Cr alloy increases slowly when the pressure exceeds 1 GPa.

Abstract:The clear proof of superconductivity in transition-metal diborides was rarely reported. In the current work, the recently developed particle swarm optimization structural search method was utilized to propose three ZrB2 structures, namely, I41/amd-ZrB2, P42/mmc-ZrB2, and P4/nmm-ZrB2. The structural stability of the three novel ZrB2 phases was confirmed on the basis of elastic constant and phonon dispersion calculations. At ambient pressure, the mechanical properties of the I41/amd-ZrB2 and P42/mmc-ZrB2 phases are comparable to those of AlB2–ZrB2. Electron–phonon coupling (EPC) calculations revealed that the P4/nmm-ZrB2 phase is predicted to be a potential high-Tc superconductor with a calculated Tc of 12.7 K at 20GPa. Moreover, significant pressure-induced EPC enhancement can also be found in the P4/nmm-ZrB2 phase. The maximum EPC constant λ and Tc under 600GPa are 1.05 and 34.4 K, respectively.
High-pressure synthesis of Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-cBN composites: Effect of thermodynamic condition and cBN volume fraction on their microstructure and properties

Abstract:Alumina with different amounts of Cubic boron nitride (cBN) was synthesized by a high-pressure sintering method. By adjusting the sintering temperature to a relatively low level, the undesirable reverse transformation from cBN to hBN was avoided, and almost entirely dense composites were obtained. The sintering behaviors, phase compositions, microstructures, and mechanical properties of Al2O3-cBN composites were investigated. The cBN phase significantly improved the modulus of elasticity and hardness, but the fracture toughness was only slightly increased. Vickers hardness of Al2O3-40 vol% cBN composites sintered at 850 C showed a maximum value of 30 GPa. The Al2O3-30 vol% cBN composite sintered at 1250 ? had the highest fracture toughness of 5.7 MPa.m(1/2).

Abstract:Boron-rich tungsten borides such as WB2+x and WB3+x have been highly expected to be superhard with many advantages over conventional superhard materials. However, because the formation of boron-rich tungsten borides is thermodynamically unfavorable at ambient pressure, their crystal structures, compositions, and properties are largely unexplored, which have impeded the rational design of functional materials in the W-B family. In this work, using unique high-pressure reactions, we report a systematic synthesis study of challenging compounds of tungsten borides including WB, WB2+x, and WB3+x. The use of pressure, combined with the controllable temperature, heating duration, and ratios of starting reactants, leads to different compositions and structures of final products with largely tunable crystallite size from nanocrystalline to single-crystal forms. In addition, the optimal conditions for the formation of WB3+x are well investigated by tuning the temperature and starting ratio of reactants, as well as by adding a solvent material. Phase diagrams and stabilities of the involved W-B compounds are also well depicted, which would provide an important guidance for future exploratory synthesis and study of the family of transition-metal borides.

Abstract:Superconductivity can be induced with the application of pressure but it disappears eventually upon heavy compression in the iron-based parent compound BaFe2As2. Structural evolution with pressure is used to understand this behavior. By performing synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements with diamond anvil cells up to 26.1 GPa, we find an anomalous behavior of the lattice parameter with a S shape along the a axis but a monotonic decrease in the c-axis lattice parameter with increasing pressure. The close relationship between the axial ratio c/a and the superconducting transition temperature Tc is established for this parent compound. The c/a ratio is suggested to be a measure of the spin fluctuation strength. The reduction of Tc with the further increase of pressure is a result of the pressure-driven weakness of the spin-fluctuation strength in this material.

Abstract:The dense boron carbide (B-C) phases with diamond structure are predicted to be superhard, with hardness close to that of a cubic boron nitride (c-BN). At ambient conditions, graphite-like BC 3 is well characterized, firstly reported by Kouvetakis et al. In this work, we have synthesized a new B-C phase from the graphite-like BC 3 in a laser-heated diamond anvil cell. Interestingly, this phase could be recoverable to ambient pressure due to dynamic stabilities. The Raman spectrum and X-ray diffraction patterns give the possible structure of this new phase.

Abstract:WC-cBN composites without any additives were synthesized by High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) method. The effect of sintering temperature, cBN content, and particle size on the densification behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of WC-cBN composites were investigated. It was found that the low sinterability of cBN particles resulted in poor bonding between WC grains and difficulty in forming grain boundaries, leading to difficulties in synthesizing fully dense WC-cBN composites at a pressure of 5.5 GPa. Under high pressure conditions, the phase transformation from cBN to the low-hardness hexagonal hBN was inhibited. The low sintering temperature and the inhibition effect of WC grain growth by the large cBN particles can deteriorate the hardness and fracture toughness of the composite. However, the hardness and toughness of the WC-cBN composites increased significantly with increasing cBN content. Excellent mechanical properties can be obtained by sintering composites containing cBN with small particle size and large content at high temperature with the hardness of 32.8 GPa and fracture toughness of 9.95 MP.m1/2.

Abstract:In-situ time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction and electrical resistance measurements are performed to determine the behaviors of PbS under pressure and temperature up to 5 GPa and 773 K. The phase diagram in our experimental range is shown based on electrical resistance measurements. Both the two approaches indicate that only the starting cubic PbS phase remains stable when the temperature reaches above 573 K. The Rietveld refinements of the neutron diffraction patterns verify that the orthorhombic (ortho) PbS phase has a Cmcm space group. The fitting of experimental data with the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state at 300 K, yields the bulk modulus of the cubic phase as K0T = 60.0 ± 0.5 GPa with its pressure derivative K0′ fixed to 4.2.
First-principle Study on Thermodynamic Property of Superhard BC_2N under Extreme Conditions

Abstract:In this study, thermodynamic properties of BC_2N under extreme conditions have been reported by using first-principle calculations and quasi-harmonic Debye model. Isochoric heat capacity ( C _v) of BC_2N at normal temperature and pressure is 23.15 kJ mol^−1 K^−1 and it increases with the temperature and decreases with the pressure. In the low temperature region, pressure has no obvious influence on phonons and thus the decrease of C _v is very slow. In the medium temperature region, the decrease of C _v becomes steep. The reason is that high pressure plays an important role in controlling the vibration of atoms. In the high temperature region, the decrease of C _v becomes slow. Debye temperature (θ) decreases with the temperature. However, the tendency is not obvious in the low temperature region but very clear in high temperature. Moreover, θ increases with pressure and the amplitude is larger in higher temperature. Because of the four covalent bonds with different strength and distribution asymmetric thermal expansion along different axes occurs. The value of thermal expansion coefficient along c axis is more than that of along a and b axes.

Abstract:High pressure is an effective means for tuning the interparticle distances of nanoparticle (NP) superlattices and thus for modifying their physical properties and functionalities. In this work, we determined the evolution of inter-NP distances of a Pt NP superlattice with increasing pressure using an in situ synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique in a diamond-anvil cell (DAC). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to characterize the microstructures of pre- and post-compression samples. Our results demonstrate that the evolution of Pt NP assemblies with increasing pressure consists of four stages: (1) ligand elastic response, (2) uniform compression, (3) ligand detachment from NP surfaces, and (4) deviatoric compression of ligands between neighboring NPs. By controlling the magnitudes of applied pressure and deviatoric stress, one can sinter NPs into novel architectures such as nanowires and nanoceramics.

Abstract:This work investigates the structural, mechanical, and electrical properties of the superhard semiconductor carbon BC14 under pressure, based on density functional theory (DFT). BC14 formed by sp 3 hybridization still maintains good mechanical stability and dynamic stability under 100 GPa pressure. The relative enthalpy of BC14 increases gradually at a slower rate and is always much lower than that of BC12, C 96 , T-carbon, TY-carbon, and Y-carbon. The elastic constant, elastic modulus, and ratio of bulk modulus ( B ) to shear modulus ( G ) increase with pressure, while the hardness exhibits a decreasing tendency. BC14 is anisotropic in elastic mechanics, and its Young's modulus ( E ) is isotropic in the (111) direction. Increasing pressure leads to the anisotropy of elastic modulus becoming stronger. From 0 GPa to 100 GPa, the band gap increases from 5.56 eV to 6.07 eV, and inherits indirect characteristics. No obvious effect of pressure is observed with regard to the number of diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern, but the diffraction peaks are slightly shifted.

Abstract:Boron carbide (B4C) is a rhombic structure composed of icosahedra and atomic chains, which has an important application in armored materials. The application of B4C under super high pressure without failure is a hot spot of research. Previous studies have unmasked the essential cause of B4C failure,i.e., its structure will change subjected to impact, especially under the non-hydrostatic pressure and shear stress. However, the change of structure has not been clearly understood nor accurately determined. Here in this paper, we propose several B4C polymorphs including B4C high pressure phases with non-icosahedra, which are denoted as post-B4C and their structures are formed due to icosahedra broken and may be obtained through high pressure and high temperature (HPHT). The research of their physical properties indicates that these B4C polymorphs have outstanding mechanical and electrical properties. For instance, aP10, mC10, mP20, and oP10-B4C are conductive superhard materials. We hope that our research will enrich the cognition of high pressure structural deformation of B4C and broaden the application scope of B4C.
Synthesis and Characterization of NanoComposite Superhard Materials

Abstract:We have developed a novel method of reactive sintering under high pressure and high temperature conditions and have successfully synthesized bulk and nanostructured BC2N, BC4N, and diamond-SiC composites. The keys to this success are the careful preparation of precursor materials through high energy ball-milling and sensible tuning of the sintering conditions ( pressure, temperature, and sintering time ), leading to the formation of nano-scale features in the final synthesis products. The indentation measurements indicate that BC 2 N and BC 4 N have the Vickers hardness of 62 and 68 GPa, respectively, making them the second hardest materials known, second only to diamond. The high P-T reactive sintering results in a nanostructured diamond-SiC composite of high uniformity, low porosity, minimum residual silicon, and minimal quantities of graphite. It tunes subtle interplays of P-T-t to have fine control of thermodynamics and kinetics in the formation of diamond-SiC nanocomposites with nanocrystalline SiC matrix. The surface defects of micron/nano-diamonds are consumed by amorphous/molten silicon in the formation of nanocrystalline SiC matrix. It in turn greatly reduces the forming/mobility of microcracks thus leads to significant enhancement of fracture toughness ( by as much as 50% ) of the nano-composites without much compromising of hardness. The present study shows how to design/proceed a well controlled nano-synthesis so as to achieve great improvement in nano-mechanics for advance technological applications.
Structural Variety Beyond Appearance: High-Pressure Phases of Crb4 in Comparison with Feb4

Abstract:Employing particle swarm optimization (PSO) combined with first-principles calculations, we systemically studied high-pressure behaviors of hard CrB4. Our predictions reveal a distinct structural evolution under pressure for CrB4 despite having the same initial structure as FeB4. CrB4 is found to adopt a new P2/m structure above 196 GPa, another Pm structure at a pressure range of 261-294 GPa and then a Pmma structure beyond 294 GPa. Instead of puckering boron sheets in the initial structure, the high-pressure phases have planar boron sheets with different motifs upon compression. Comparatively, FeB4 prefers an I4(1)/acd structure over 48 GPa with tetrahedron B-4 units and a P2(1)3 structure above 231 GPa having equilateral triangle B-3 units. Significantly, CrB4 exhibits persistent metallic behavior in contrast with the semiconducting features of FeB4 upon compression. The varied pressure response of hard tetraborides studied here is of importance for understanding boron-rich compounds and designing new materials with superlative properties.
