Abstract:This paper presents a complementary CMOS voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using a current-limiting tail resistor. The addition of the tail resistor increases the oscillator common mode path impedance, and prevents its differential pair from loading the tank during triode operation. It can prevent reduction of the quality factor (Q value) of the tank and deterioration of the phase noise (PN) of the VCO, and also reduce the noise from the tail current source which injects into the tank. The simulation shows that compared with the traditional complementary Class B VCO, the PN is optimized by about 4.2 dB, and the power consumption is smaller. Fabricated in 180-nm CMOS, the prototype consumes 3.6-mW under a 1.8-V supply voltage and achieves a PN of -115.5 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset when operating at 5.22 GHz. The oscillator can get a tuning range of 14.3% from 5.17 to 5.94 GHz and its figure-of-merit (FoM) is 184 dBc/Hz.
