Abstract:W-Ni-Fe alloys exhibit high density and excellent mechanical properties, making it attractive in the kinetic energy penetrators. However, its impact fracture behavior has not been fully understood. To investigate the relationship between microstructural parameters and impact behavior, the impact toughness of W-Ni-Fe alloys with different W content (90, 93 and 95 wt.%) were studied by means of instrumented Charpy impact testing. The impact load-displacement curves show that for all alloys, the crack initiation energy accounts for most of the total impact energy while the crack propagation energy is rather low and not varying with W content. With increasing of W content, the W-W contiguity increases and the volume fraction of matrix phase decreases, resulting in a decrease in the crack initiation energy from 83 J for 90W to 24 J for 95W. The low W-W contiguity and high volume fraction of the matrix phase in 90W allows intense plastic deformation occurs, and high dislocation density and severe deformed W particles are observed in the crack initiation region. Besides, 90W exhibits a higher micro-cracks arresting ability. With increasing of W contents, plastic deformation and micro-crack arresting capability decreases due to the high W-W contiguity and low volume fraction of the matrix phase, resulting in decreasing of the crack initiation energy. Our study provides a deep insight into the relationships between microstructural parameters and impact toughness of tungsten heavy alloys.
