Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of the fracture behavior of pre-heated rocks under to mixed mode I/II loading is crucial for deep underground engineering. The effect of high temperature on the fracture process zone (FPZ) and fracture toughness of rocks was experimentally investigated using semi-circular bend (SCB) samples. Surface displacement and associated strain field under loading were captured using digital image correlation. The results showed that the mechanical properties of SCB samples gradually decreased with increasing temperature. Rocks exposed at temperature exceeding 600 degrees C demonstrated a significant reduction in peak load, generalized stiffness, fracture toughness, and absorbed energy. Moreover, the load-displacement curves and macroscopic fracture characteristics of pre-heated SCB samples revealed a transition from brittleness to ductility with increasing temperature under mixed mode I/II loading. Both the length and width, as well as the crack tip opening displacement of the FPZ, increased with rising temperature. At lower temperatures (25 similar to 400 degrees C), the ratio of FPZ length to width typically ranged between 2 and 3. While, at elevated temperature (600 similar to 1000 degrees C), this ratio expanded to between 3 and 4. The initiation of thermally induced cracks in rocks will accelerate damage evolution under mixed mode I/II loading, as indicated by the development of the maximum principal strain with displacement. Scanning electron microscopy and polarization microscopy images of the microscopic fracture morphology in pre-heated rocks illustrated isolated and dispersed microcracks appeared at lower temperatures, whereas at elevated temperatures, intricate microcrack networks and broken grains were observed.

Abstract:The temperature-dependent ductile-brittle transition (DBT) in low-carbon martensitic steel is investigated in different stress states. To capture the effects of the stress state, tensile tests have been performed with flat specimens and three-point bending tests have been conducted with Charpy specimens at dynamic (impact) and quasi-static loading rates, covering a broad temperature range of 77 K to 423 K. The results reveal that ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) is significantly affected by stress triaxiality, wherein the transition temperature in uniaxial tension is ∼142 K lower than that in plane strain condition of Charpy specimens. The energy absorption capacity in the ductile resistance domain during three-point bending tests is sensitive to the loading rate. Moreover, dynamic strain aging poses a decrease in ductile resistance upon quasi-static loading when the temperature exceeds 323 K and thus without a specific upper shelf plateau. Tensile strength and ductility tend to increase with decreasing temperature, and the associated failure mode changes from shear-dominated to nearly pure tension due to the specific discrepancy of temperature influence on the critical normal and shear strengths, wherein the formation of shear bands that dominate the tensile deformation could be strictly inhibited by the formation of nanoscale dislocation cells based on dislocation analysis. The failure mechanisms in tensile tests correlate with the tensile specimens' macroscopic fracture angle. In the end, a new local parameter is proposed for temperature-dependent toughness estimation in tensile tests.

Probabilistic and Constitutive Models for Ductile-to-brittle Transition in Steels: A Competition Between Cleavage and Ductile Fracture

Abstract:We propose a probabilistic model coupling with the temperature dependent constitutive relationship to describe the competition between the cleavage and ductile void failure of ferritic/martensitic steels with irradiation effects. It is found that both the material deformation and failure modes exhibit significant temperature dependence. Regarding the material deformation, two regimes have been found for the ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT). At low temperature, the flow stress is controlled by the mobility of screw dislocations. The high-temperature regime is about the thermally activated jog drag of dislocations. The failure modes depend on the carbide precipitate and temperature. Cleavage micro-cracks initiate at the carbide sites at low temperature giving rise to brittle behaviors. At high temperature, void nucleation evolving from the carbide precipitate suppresses the cleavage nucleation and propagation, and leads to good ductility. It is demonstrated that the competition between the cleavage fracture and ductile void failure is the major mechanism for the DBT. Our probabilistic model successfully predicts the temperature-dependent fracture toughness and ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Besides temperature, irradiation has a significant effect on the DBT of steels. Upon irradiation, the steels exhibit both irradiation hardening and irradiation embrittlement, i.e., rise in yield and flow stresses, and increase on DBTT. The main reason for these irradiation effects is that the irradiation-induced hardening increases the flow stress, and the plasticity localization weakens the overall hindering effect from ductile void growth on the cleavage nucleation and propagation, promoting the development of cleavage. Our probabilistic model takes into account the cleavage nucleation-propagation process and the influence of ductile void growth simultaneously, and it gives a sound explanation for the fundamental relation between the DBTT and mechanical properties of metallic materials.
Interpretation of the Effects of High Austenitizing Temperature on Toughness Behavior in a Low Alloy, High Strength Steel

Abstract:An experimental investigation into the effects of high temperature austenitizing treatment (h.t.a.) on the microstructure and the mechanical properties, and micromechanisms of fracture in a variety of test conditions has been carried out on a Ni-Cr high strength steel. H.t.a. increased the fracture toughness, but decreased the tensile ductilities and notch toughness of this steel with a slight reduction in strength in the condition of strain-controlled fracture mode. However, the fracture toughness and notch toughness of steel were simultaneously improved by h.t.a. in the condition of stress-controlled fracture mode. This behavior of ductility and notch toughness is because the micro structural variations arising from h.t.a. have different roles in different fracture modes. It appears that the general effect of microstructural changes is beneficial to stress-controlled fracture, but the reverse is true to straincontrolled fracture. The fracture toughness behavior was greatly affected by the change in characteristic distance with austenitizing temperature, but the characteristic distance obtained from the best fitting of experimental results does not have clear physical meaning. It is observed that the application of macroscopic fracture stress or strain in analyzing local failure behavior ahead of the crack tip can be justified if the characteristic distance is consistent with the microstructural parameters related to the fracture process. The improvement in fracture toughness for stress controlled fracture mainly results from the large characteristic distance; whereas in the case of strain controlled fracture, this is caused by the much higher local fracture strain ahead of the crack tip of h.t.a. structure compared to that observed in structures produced by conventional austenitizing.

Abstract:The post-dynamic transformation (post-DT), which could occur during isothermal holding after hot deformation, was investigated by using both dilatometry method and optical microstructural observation in a plain low carbon steel. The results indicates that the kinetics of post-DT at deformation temperature between Ae3 and Ar3 can be well described by the Avrami equation: X=1−exp(−ktn), but the n value is lower than that of the corresponding static transformation due to the early impingement of formed ferrite grains. Furthermore, the ferrite-to-austenite re-transformation was measured by dilatometry during the isothermal holding after hot deformation above Ae3 temperature, which suggests that dynamic transformation can indeed occur even above Ae3.

Abstract:During uniaxial hot compression for a medium carbon steel, the deformation induced ferrite (DIF) appeared when deformed temperatures lower than A(d3) (786 V). The volume fraction of DIF increases with decreasing deformation temperature, especially when deformed temperatures lower than 750 degrees C the volume fraction of DIF increases significantly, which is far beyond the equilibrium ferrite fraction of 54%. With the increase of DIF, more and more carbon atoms were rejected into the boundaries of ferrite and interfaces of ferrite/untransformed austenite. During isothermal holding below A(1) (719 degrees C) temperature just after deformation, supercooled austenite would decompose to different structures in three different ways: when the deformation temperature is higher than A(d3), conventional ferrite-lamellar pearlite structure was obtained; when the deformation temperature is lower than A(d3) whereas higher than Ar-3 (645 degrees C), retained austenite transformed to ferrite-lamellar or degenerated pearlite-grain boundary cementite; when the deformation temperature decreased to just above A(d3), a microstructure different from lamellar pearlite was obtained, which consisted of fine cementite particle and ferrite.

Abstract:Ductile fracture of steel components cannot be avoided particularly due to large inelastic strain in extreme loading scenarios. Without considering damage model, conventional elasto-plastic constitutive material model cannot lead to accurate finite element (FE) modelling results when damage due to fracture exists. Metal fracture is a complex damage process in which damage onset, material deterioration and final fracture are related to development of material plasticity. Uniaxial tensile fracture and shear fracture are two typical failure modes of structural members. In this study, experimental investigations of monotonic tensile fracture and in-plane shear fracture under different strain rates in quasi-static loading range are presented for low-alloy structural carbon steel. The characteristic steel material properties are obtained insensitive to the chosen strain rate. A semi-empirical process is used to calibrate the damage properties (damage onset and softening criteria) through FE modelling of the coupon samples based on a continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model. Deterioration of the carbon steel properties was found related to the evolution of equivalent plastic strain, and particularly there is a linear relationship for the in-plane shear scenario. The verified damage onset and shear softening are then used for modelling of a welded steel tubular connection experiencing punching shear fracture phenomenon. It is shown that modelling result of the steel connection is significantly improved when the proposed fracture modelling is adopted.

Abstract:To understand the high-temperature behaviors of γ-TiAl is essential for its applications in aerospace industries. In this study, the high-temperature mechanical tests were carried out with strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 s −1 for the forged Ti-46Al-5Nb-1.8Cr-0.2Ta-0.1B alloy. The dynamic behaviors, fracture modes and microstructure evolution at elevated temperatures were analyzed to reveal the mechanisms involved in damage evolution. The results show that the brittleness of γ-TiAl is enhanced by strain rate hardening, and the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature (BDTT) increases with the increase of strain rates. The fracture morphology shows that the fracture characteristics transfer from the brittle fracture with mixed mode of intergranular and transgranular below and within the BDTT to the ductile fracture above BDTT. In addition, micro-cracks appear in fracture zones at the transitory stage, and cavities appear at the ductile stage, which is related to dynamic recrystallization (DRX). In this case, it is deduced that the brittle-to-ductile transition is induced by the competition between plastic deformation and crack propagation, and the results can be used to optimize the processing parameters towards high surface integrity when manufacturing γ-TiAl components.

Abstract:In order to address the complexity of fracture damage behavior in metallic materials during service, the thermography technique was used to analyze the temperature evolution behavior of Q460 steel during cyclic deformation. The microscopic organization and microstructural mechanical properties of the crack tip (CT) region of the specimen were also examined to study the fatigue damage mechanism and crack propagation mechanism of Q460 steel from the perspectives of microstructure and energy evolution. The results showed that under the action of fatigue load, dislocation formation and motion occurred in the specimen, accompanied by energy release, which led to a change in surface temperature. The temperature of the fatigue failure area rapidly increased, leading to the formation of a large number of low-angle grain boundaries (LAGB). The nano-indentation results effectively studied the mechanical properties of the stress field area at the CT and revealed that the fatigue crack propagation process of Q460 steel is a result of the synergistic effect between the variation of grain orientation the crack region and the aggregation of a large number of micro-defects in the work-hardened zone. Based on the fatigue heat generation mechanism and entropy evolution mechanism, the study comprehensively analyzed consistency and differences in the damage mechanisms of Q460 steel under tensile load and fatigue load, employing temperature as a bridge. The research results ensure the safety and reliability of Q460 steel during its operation and provide new insights into the study of fatigue fracture behavior in metallic materials.

Abstract:Al-Li alloys has the advantages of low density and high modulus,but its tenacity is bad. The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr allogy was studied. The fracture toughness of the alloy was measured by means of the quasi-static and dynamic three-point bending testing, respectively. The results show that the dynamic fracture toughness of the alloy is superior to the quasi-static fracture toughness of it. The microscopic observations of the fractured surface show that the dynamic fractured surface has a great deal of long and deep delaminations. The further analysis by means of TEMand SEM shows that the delamination and split -up of the alloy are the main cause of the fracture toughness increasing.

Abstract:This study investigated the low-temperature fracture behavior of an 80-mm-thick low-carbon steel plate welded by submerged arc. The relationship between impact absorbed energy and ductility–brittle transition temperature (DBTT) based on the microstructures was evaluated through quantitative analysis on grain size and complex constituent phases using advanced EBSD technique. The microstructure formed differently depending on the heat affections, which determined fracture properties in a low-temperature environment. Among the various microstructures of the heat-affected zone (HAZ), acicular ferrite has the greatest resistance to low-temperature impact due to its fine interlocking formation and its high-angle grain boundaries.

Abstract:High-strain-rate compression experiments were performed on 3D needle-punched Carbon/Carbon composites at room and elevated temperatures with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) apparatus in the longitudinal and transverse direction. Macro-fracture and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) micrographs were examined to understand the failure mechanism. The results show composites are characterized as high-strain-rate and temperature sensitivity. With increasing the strain rate, dynamic properties increase significantly. Moreover, transverse properties are higher than longitudinal properties. With increasing the temperature (up to 300°C), longitudinal and transverse curves rise up, dynamic strength and modulus increase and failure strain decreases. The results also indicate composites take on more serious damage and clear shear failure mode with increasing the strain rate. Longitudinal failure behaves as matrix cracking and compression process on fiber layers. While needle-punched fibers shear fracture and 0°/90° fiber layers delaminating dominate transverse impact failure. In addition, at high strain rates, brittle failure feature becomes more obvious with increasing the temperature.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of loading rate and high temperature on the dynamic fracture toughness of rock, dynamic fracture tests were carried out on notched semi-circular bend specimens under four temperature conditions based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar system. Experimental and analytical methods were applied to investigating the effect of temperature gradient on the stress waves. A high-speed camera was used to check the fracture characteristics of the specimens. The results demonstrate that the temperature gradient on the bars will not significantly distort the shape of the stress wave. The dynamic force balance is achieved even when the specimens are at a temperature of 400 °C. The dynamic fracture toughness linearly develops with the increase of loading rate within the temperature range of 25−400 °C, and high temperature has a strengthening effect on the dynamic fracture toughness.

Abstract:<p>The effect of temperature on tensile behavior, low cycle fatigue, and microstructure evolution considering the damage mechanisms of Cr-based heat-resisting steel was investigated. The results present that significant monotonic and cyclic softening was observed at both room temperature and 630 °C. However, the cyclic softening factor is independent of the strain amplitudes and temperatures. At room temperature, the steady fatigue behavior until 80% fatigue life was presented, by contrast, great changes were offered below 80% fatigue life at 630 °C. this is directly related to the microstructure properties during fatigue tests, where dislocation network, wall, and dynamic recovery were formed, resulting from the dislocation movement, interaction, and annihilation. The density of dislocation and intensity of slip is inversely proportional to the temperature. Besides, a prediction fatigue life model fitted by the quadratic function was established through the hysteresis energy, which can consider the effect of temperature on the different fitting parameters and offer the method to optimize the fatigue behavior of Cr-based steel at different temperatures</p>

Abstract:Existing work on size effects in the measurement of dynamic fracture toughness (DFT) have focused mainly on the overall geometric dimensions of the test specimens, while the effects of notch width and loading rate were not explored. In this paper, DFT experiments were conducted using Ti-6Al-4V alloy to study the effects of notch width effect and loading rate effect on its dynamic mode II fracture toughness. An extrapolation method is proposed to estimate the DFT of an ideal sharp crack, and the relationship between DFT, loading rate, and notch width is captured with a 3D spatial plane. Results revealed that the DFT decreases with a reduction of the notch width and increases with loading rate. The effects of notch width on DFT will be shown to be more sensitive compared to loading rate. The failure mode transitional behavior from ductile fracture to adiabatic shearing will be revealed through fractographic analysis of the microstructural evolution, which will elucidate the effects of loading rate on the failure mechanism of the material.

Abstract:The dynamic fracture toughness of HG50 and CF60 high-strength low-alloy steel and their weld joints are studied. The fracture toughness versus temperature is measured at three cross-head rates. The effects of microstructure and loading rate on fracture toughness are analyzed. The results show that such steel has good dynamic fracture toughness and can be used to make the parts of engineering machinery for withstanding impact force although it is sensitive to loading rates. The ductile-brittle transition temperature is increased during welding and the fracture toughness data within the transition zone have better dispersion.

Abstract:Temperature significantly influences the fracture toughness of dual-phase steel, with internal void damage closely linked to sheet metal fracture. Microstructural damage models are vital for studying material failure, and precise calibration of their parameters is crucial for numerical analysis reliability. This paper focuses on accurately calibrating these parameters using a combination of experimental and numerical simulations based on the Hill'48-Gurson-TvergaardNeedleman (GTN) model. Employing a central composite experimental design, response surface methodology, and genetic algorithms, the study determines relevant damage parameters for dual- phase steel at different temperatures. The research carefully analyses the evolution patterns of damage parameters concerning sheet metal and corresponding temperatures. The study contributes to understanding damage parameter evolution patterns, offering a predictive method for dual-phase steel sheet damage parameters across varying temperature conditions.

Abstract:The tensile behavior of Duplex Ti-46.5Al-2Nb-2Cr intermetallics (DP TiAl) is Studied at strain rates ranging from 0.001 to 1350 s(-1) and temperatures from room temperature to 840 degrees C, in which tensile impact tests are conducted on a self-designed rotating disk indirect bar-bar tensile impact apparatus at University of Science and Technology of China(BTIA at USTC). Results show obvious effects of temperature and strain rate. The strength under dynamic loading is higher that that under quasi-static loading. The Brittle-to-Ductile Transition Temperature (BDTT) rises with elevated strain rates. The fractographic analysis show that below BDTT the fracture mode changes from planar cleavage fracture to intergranular fracture with increased test temperatures and voids are found oil the colony boundaries at elevated temperature.
