Abstract:Boron nitride nanotubes have been proposed of having great potential in various applications due to their outstanding properties such as high thermal conductivity and excellent chemical stability. Here, we present a template-assisted method of synthesizing vertically-aligned boron nitride nanotubes (VA-BNNTs) from vertically-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (VA-SWCNTs). This approach involves a chemical vapor deposition of boron nitride layers coating onto VA-SWCNTs first and subsequent removal of VA-SWCNTs by the oxidation in pure oxygen. The obtained VA-SWCNTs covered by BNNTs and VA-BNNTs arrays retain a highly ordered vertically aligned structure. The thermal stability of VA-SWCNTs was enhanced by coating with BNNTs. The structure and crystalline conditions were characterized by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The chemical composition of samples was investigated by UV–Vis–NIR absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Boron nitride coating starts onto VA-SWCNTs from the top of the VA-SWCNTs array, which is confirmed by NanoSIMS characterization.Graphical abstract

Abstract:A room-temperature aqueous-chemical route has been developed to synthesize a high proportion (above 80%) of bamboo-raft-like bismuth nanotube arrays using bismuth chloride and metallic zinc powder as reagents. The prepared Bi nanotubes have uniform diameters of approximately 3-5 nm. and lengths from several hundred nanometers to several micrometers. HRTEM observations show that the axial direction of the prepared nanotubes is along the normal direction of the (012) lattice planes of the rhombohedral bismuth. Abstract:WOx (2 < x < 3) and WS2 nanostructures have been widely praised due to applications as catalysts, solid lubricants, field emitters, and optical components. Many methods have been developed to fabricate these nanomaterials; however, most attention was focused on the same dimensional transformation from WOx nanoparticles or nanorods to WS2 nanoparticles or nanotubes. In a solid-vapor reaction, by simply controlling the quantity of water vapor and reaction temperature, we have realized the transformation from quasi-zero-dimensional WS2 nanoparticles to one-dimensional W18O49 nanorods, and subsequent sulfuration reactions have further converted these W18O49 nanorods into WS2 nanotubes. The reaction temperature, quantity of water vapor, and pretreatment of the WS2 nanoparticle precursors are important process parameters for long, thin, and homogeneous W18O49 nanorods growth. The morphologies, crystal structures, and circling transformation mechanisms of sulfide-oxide-sulfide are discussed, and the photoluminescence properties of the resulting nanorods are investigated using a Xe lamp under an excitation of 270 nm.

Abstract:Long Bi2O3 nanowires have been prepared via the thioglyolic acid (HSCH2COOH, TGA) assisted hydrothermal method. The x-ray diffraction pattern shows that the Bi2O3 nanowires obtained are of orthorhombic phase. High resolution transmission electron microscopy identifies that the Bi2O3 nanowires are single crystalline in nature. Furthermore, we give a preliminary presentation of the mechanism for the TGA-assisted hydrothermal synthesis of Bi2O3 nanowires.

Abstract:Hexagonal AlN nanowire arrays were synthesized through the direct reaction of Al and NH3/N2 under the confinement of anodic porous alumina template. The synthesis mechanism could be understood as the space-limited nucleation followed by the growth along the template channels. The progress presented here could be used to fabricate nanowire arrays that have potential applications in many fields such as field emission and (opto)electronic nanodevices.

Abstract:A template-based heat-treatment method has been developed to convert metal nanowire arrays into arrays of metal-metal oxide core-shell nanowires and single-crystalline metal oxide nanotubes. This process is demonstrated by kinetically controlling the conversion of single-crystalline Bi nanowires to Bi-Bi(2)O(3) core-shell nanowires via a multistep, slow oxidation method, and then controlling their further conversion to a single-crystalline Bi(2)O(3) nanotube array via fast oxidation. This process can conveniently be extended to fabricate a free-standing, easily oxidized metal-metal oxide nanowire and metal oxide nanotube array, which may have future applications in nanoscale optics, electronics, and magnetics.

Abstract:Porous anodic aluminum oxide templates with different channel structures have been synthesized and used to grow carbon nanotubes (CNTs) through the pyrolysis of ethylene at 700 °C. Aligned CNT arrays, Y-branched as well as novel dendriform CNTs have been obtained and well characterized by scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The amorphous structure, irregular and quasi-hemispherical ends as well as the branched junction have been revealed in detail. The disordered structure of the carbon nanotubes was assigned to the lattice mismatch between alumina and carbon species. A growth mechanism mainly based on the space-limited and self-catalytic functions of template channels has been proposed accordingly.

Abstract:In this work, NbC nanowire arrays were successfully synthesized via a facile and cost-effective biotemplate method. Natural bamboo chips were used as both the carbon source and the template for formation of catalyst particles, which significantly simplify the synthesis process of NbC nanowire arrays. Based on the structural, morphological, and elemental analyses, a fluoride-assisted vapor–liquid–solid growth mechanism was proposed. In situ nanoscale three-point bending measurements demonstrated that the Young’s modulus of NbC nanowires was in the range from 281 to 453GPa with an average value of 338±55GPa. The resistivity of NbC nanowires was further investigated by in situ electrical property characterization using a multipoint measurement inside a transmission electron microscope. The resistivity of NbC nanowires was calculated to be 5.02mΩcm.

Abstract:One-dimensional semiconductor materials Bi2Te3 nanocrystals, with a novel nanostructure we call ‘sheet-rod,’ can grow via a controlling oriented attachment. These rods are assembled through oriented attachment of the Bi2Te3 sheets in the assistance of EDTA additive, and the sheet-rods are homogeneous single crystals. The formation mechanism could be an ionic reaction involving a nucleation–aggregation–coarsening process. It is proved that this synthetic approach could be promising to self-assembled prepare one-dimensional nanocrystals of metals and semiconductors.

Abstract:MoO(3) has a unique rigid double-layer structure, which makes it a real challenge to prepare nanotubular structures. The controlled synthesis of MoO(3) single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) is achieved through a cluster-based self-assembly route on the dodecanethiol/water interface. Various factors are studied at length, including precursor type, reaction time, temperature, pH value, and their influence on the morphology of products. The concept of "self-assembly-from simple clusters to nanostructures" is proposed here based on preliminary results from the synthesis of MoO(3) SWNTs, which provides a new aspect for traditional synthetic chemistry of nanomaterials and polyoxometalates.

Abstract:Tetragonal Barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanotube arrays have been prepared using the template-assisted hydrothermal method combined with an annealing process. The in-situ chemical conversion of TiO2 nanotube array templates ensured that BaTiO3 maintained the morphology of the nanotube architectures. Moreover, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectrum characterization were used to confirm that the BaTiO3 nanotube arrays had a tetragonal phase after the use of a simple annealing technique. Typical hysteresis loops showed their ferroelectricity, with the remanent polarization and coercive fields being 2.57 microC/cm2 and 2.52 kV/cm, respectively. The relative dielectric constant of the tetragonal BaTiO3 nanotube arrays reached up to 1000 and the dielectric loss was as low as 0.02 at 1 kHz at room temperature.

Abstract:A self-generated template route was reported to prepare hollow carbon nanospheres. The hollow spheres were obtained through the direct pyrolysis of ferrocene for 1h. The external diameter of the hollow carbon nanospheres was 50–150nm and the thickness of the wall was about 15nm. A possible formation mechanism of the hollow carbon nanospheres was discussed.

Abstract:Highly-ordered boron nitride (BN) nanotube arrays have been synthesized by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MW-PECVD) below 520°C under the confinement of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template with borane/argon and ammonia/nitrogen as precursors. The low growth temperature and aligned arrangement of the BN nanotubes are beneficial to practical applications despite of the amorphous nature of the product. Novel morphology of Y-branching and dendriform BN nanotubes were also observed when the branching AAO template was used.
