Abstract:Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) have been catalytically synthesized by heat treatment of Si nanopowder at 980 °C. The SiNWs comprise crystalline Si nanoparticles interconnected with metal catalyst. The formation mechanism of nanowires generally depends on the presence of Fe catalysts in the synthesis process of solid–liquid–solid (SLS). Although gas phase of vapor–liquid–solid (VLS) method can be used to produce various of different nanowire materials, growth model based on the SLS mechanism by heat treatment is more ascendant for providing ultrafast growth of single-crystalline Si nanowires and controlling the diameter of them easily. The growth of single-crystalline SiNWs and morphology were discussed.

Abstract:Well-aligned boron nanowire arrays were grown vertically on silicon substrates over areas up to several tens of square centimeters using radio-frequency magnetron sputtering of highly pure boron. During growth and self-assembly of boron nanowire arrays, no template or catalyst was needed. The morphology, structure, and composition of the self-organized boron nanowires were characterized in detail using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Our results might provide insight into the controllable formation of a wide variety of ordered nanostructures with advanced properties.

Abstract:Different morphology and diameter boron nanowires were synthesized by means of chemical vapor deposition on silicon substrates through controlling the growth temperature and the thickness of catalyst Au films. Smooth boron nanowires were fabricated at the temperature ranged from 800 to 900°C. The diameter of boron nanowires increased slightly with the growth temperature increasing. Boron nanochains with the periodic modulated diameter could be fabricated at the temperature of 950°C. As the thickness of Au films increases, the diameter and length of boron nanowires increase dramatically. The growth process of boron nanowires and nanochains was also discussed.

Abstract:Boron nanowires (BNWs) are considered as an ideal optoelectronic nanomaterial, but controlling them in identical growth mode and large-area patterns is technically challenging. Here, large-scale BNW patterns with a uniform base-up growth mode are successfully fabricated by choosing Ni film as the catalyst. Moreover, they exhibit low turn-on field (4.3 V/μm) and excellent field emission uniformity (88%).

Abstract:Crystalline boron oxide nanowires have been synthesized on silicon substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process without the use of catalysts or templates. It is pointed out that the boron oxide nanowires are cubic and single crystalline, and the diameter of the nanowires is in the range of 20–80nm. Some of the nanowires branched, and the diameters of the branches and stems of the branched boron oxide nanowires are in the range of 20–80 and 100–200nm, respectively. The crystallinity, morphology, and structure features of the as-prepared boron oxide nanowires were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. Furthermore, Raman spectrum and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the nanowires were also investigated.

Abstract:. Aligned tetragonal single crystal boron nanorods have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition on silicon substrates without any templates. A thin film of Al was used as catalyst, and the nanorods were synthesized in a large area. The nanorods have a diameter of 20–50 nm. The SAED and HRTEM reveal that the nanorods are single crystal in nature and preferentially grew up along [002]. The optical properties of the nanorods were investigated. The growth mechanism of the boron nanorods has been discussed.

Abstract:The inherent properties of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) can be further enhanced through the control of their anisotropy. In particular, horizontally aligned BNNTs (HABNNTs) exhibit considerable potential for various applications. However, directly synthesizing HABNNTs is difficult owing to the random floating of BNNTs and the absence of directional forces. Here, we employed a simple, efficient, and universal "surface-like growth" strategy to synthesize high-density and high-quality HABNNTs in the W2B5/Zn precursor system. First, the floating range of BNNTs was restricted to the vicinity of the precursor, and then, directional forces were applied to induce BNNT directional growth along the substrate surface. Experiments and simulations confirmed that the HABNNT orientation could be controlled through manipulation of the directional forces. Furthermore, the strategy was employed for HABNNTs synthesis using the MoB2/Zn, further demonstrating the universality of the approach. Overall, this work offers a fresh perspective on the synthesis of HABNNTs, further expanding their potential applications.

Abstract:Large-scale aligned ZnO nanowires are grown uniformly on silicon substrates covered with polycrystalline ZnO films by carbothermal route, without employing any metal catalysts and vacuum system. The products collected from the different temperature zones were characterized using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. It was found the (001) oriented single crystal ZnO nanowires with different diameters could be fabricated. It is suggested that the ZnO films with smaller grain sizes may offer the nucleation centers for the formation of ZnO nanowires.

Abstract:Nanowires have a wide range of applications, such as transparent electrodes, Li-ion battery anodes, light-emitting diodes, solar cells, and electronic devices. Currently, aluminum (Al) nanowires can be synthesized by thermally induced substitution of germanium (Ge) nanowires, chemical vapor deposition on other metal substrates, and template-assisted growth methods. However, there are still challenges in fabricating extremely high-purity nanowires, large-scale manufacturing, and simplifying the synthesis process and conditions. Here, we report for the first time that single-crystal Al nanowires can be one-step, in situ synthesized on a reduced graphene oxide (RGO) substrate on a large scale without using any catalysts. Through a simple high temperature treatment process, commercial micro-sized Al powders in RGO film were transformed into a single-crystal Al nanowire with an average length of 1.2 μm and an average diameter of 18 nm. The possible formation mechanism of the single-crystal Al nanowires is proposed as follows: hot aluminum atoms eject from the pristine aluminum/alumina core/shell structure of Al powders when they build up enough energy from the thermal stress under high temperature and confined space conditions, which is supported by both experimental and computational results. The method introduced here can be extended to allow the synthesis of one-dimensional highly reactive materials, like alkali metal nanowires, in confined spaces.
Large-scale Boron Nanowire Nanojunctions and Their Highly-Oriented Arrays

Abstract:Highly oriented multiple boron nanowire nanojunctions with unilateral feather-like morphology were first successfully prepared using a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering method. The branched boron nano-feathers always nucleate and grow on the same sidewall of the stems, and align in parallel to form multiple T-and/or Y-type nanojunctions. The diameters of the branches and the stems are in the range of 20–40 and 60–80 nm, respectively. The thinner branches and thicker stems of the boron nanowires self-assembled into large-scale, highly ordered arrays on various substrates. During the formation and self-assembly of the arrays, no template or catalyst was needed. We believe that the approach presented here can be used to fabricate heterostructures with bottom-up assembly of a wide variety of one-dimensional nanostructures via the rational design of targets and the proper control of the experimental conditions.

Abstract:We reported a simple, large-scale, and controllable growth method for network-like branched single-crystalline Si3N4 nanostructures by catalyst-assisted pyrolysis of a polysilazane. The templates were a silicon wafer deposited with a 5 nm Fe film. The processes simply involved in thermal cross-linking of the polymer precursor, crushing of the solidified preceramic polymer chunks into fine powder, and thermal pyrolysis of the powder under the protection of ultra-high purity nitrogen. The collected white network-like branched nanostnictures were formed through "metal-absorption on the surface of nanostructures" model by vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Microstructure characterizations indicate that the nanostructures are single-crystalline hexagonal alpha-Si3N4. The reaction mechanism of Si3N4 nanonetworks was also proposed. Abstract:Boron carbide nanowires with uniform carbon nitride coating layers were synthesized on a silicon substrate using a simple thermal process. The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized nanowires were characterized using x-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy. A correlation between the surface smoothness of the nanowire sidewalls and their lateral sizes has been observed and it is a consequence of the anisotropic formation of the coating layers. A growth mechanism is also proposed for these growth phenomena.

Abstract:Single-crystalline vanadium dioxide (VO2) nanostructures have attracted an intense research interest recently because of their unique single-domain metal-insulator phase transition property. Synthesis of these nanostructures in the past was limited in density, alignment, or single-crystallinity. The assembly of VO2 nanowires (NWs) is desirable for a "bottom-up" approach to the engineering of intricate structures using nanoscale building blocks. Here, we report the successful synthesis of horizontally aligned VO2 NWs with a dense growth mode in the [1-100] quartz direction of a polished x-cut quartz surface using a simple vapor transport method. Our strategy of controlled growth of VO2 NWs promisingly paves the way for designing novel metal-insulator transition devices based on VO2 NWs.

Abstract:There are two possible schemes for obtaining nanowires. During anisotropic growth, the tips of nanorods can be etched by introducing appropriate chemicals to actively activate the growth sites, thus enabling continuous anisotropic growth. In the directed attachment method, appropriate amines and controlled reaction conditions can modulate dipole‐dipole interactions, thereby facilitating the controlled formation of connections between nanorods. When the diameter of semiconductor nanowires is below the Bohr radius, confined excitons in the radial direction can freely move along the elongated axis direction, highlighting their potential for applications in quantum information and optoelectronic devices. Controlled anisotropic growth and oriented attachment are viable strategies for producing ultra‐long semiconductor nanowires with precisely controlled lengths and diameters. Anisotropic ZnSe nanorods are used as the initial seeds for the controlled anisotropic growth and oriented attachment methods. ZnSe nanorods/nanowires with limiting lengths of tens to hundreds of nanometers are produced. The advantages and limitations of semiconductor nanowires via controlled anisotropic growth and oriented attachment are summarized. The perspective for the promotion of controlled anisotropic growth and oriented attachment is discussed, which allows to promotion of the precise synthesis of semiconductor ultra‐long nanowires to develop the fundamental research and applications of ultra‐long semiconductor nanowires.

Catalyzed Growth for Atomic-Precision Colloidal Chalcogenide Nanowires and Heterostructures: Progress and Perspective.

Abstract:One-dimensional colloidal semiconductor nanowires are of wide interest in nanoscale electronics and photonics. As compared to the zero-dimensional counterparts, their geometrical anisotropy offers an additional degree of freedom to tailor the electronic and optical properties and enables customized heterostructures with increased complexity. The colloidal synthetic chemistry developed over past decades has fueled the emergence of diverse one-dimensional nanocrystals and heterostructures, whereas the synthetic pursuit for compositionally and structurally defining them at the atomic-level precision remains yet a giant challenge. Catalyzed growth, wherein nanowires grow at the catalyst-nanowire interfaces in a layer-by-layer manner, offers a promising path toward such an ultimate goal. In this Perspective, we will take a close look at how catalyzed growth would enable the on-demand, atomic-precision control of colloidal nanowires and their heterostructures. We then further highlight their potentials for constructing higher-order heteroarchitectures with new and/or enhanced performances. Finally, we conclude with a forward-looking perspective on future challenges.
Efficient Growth of 1D Van der Waals Heterostructures on Zeolite‐Supported SWCNTs

Abstract:This study reports the optimized growth of 1D van der Waals heterostructures, specifically SWCNTs encapsulated by BNNTs, on zeolite‐supported templates. By refining precursor amounts, BNNT coverage improved from 9% to 42%. High‐resolution TEM and Raman spectroscopy revealed a correlation between BNNT coverage and Raman signals, offering insights into enhanced synthesis and applications of these heterostructures. The controlled synthesis of 1D van der Waals (1D vdW) heterostructures, specifically single‐walled carbon nanotubes encapsulated within boron nitride nanotubes (SWCNT@BNNT), presents a challenge due to an incomplete understanding of the factors influencing BNNT growth. This study investigates the growth yield of SWCNT@BNNT heterostructures produced using zeolite‐supported SWCNT templates on SiO2‐coated Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) grids, which enable in situ synthesis and thorough evaluation of each step without compromising the nanotube structure. The high‐resolution TEM analysis reveals a significant improvement in BNNT coverage on individual nanotubes, increasing from 9% to 42%, through optimization of the ammonia borane precursor amount. A thorough comparison of BNNT growth efficiency is performed using zeolite‐supported SWCNT templates against the current benchmark of free‐standing SWCNT films, highlighting comparable synthesis yields despite different morphologies and SWCNT diameter distributions. By integrating all Raman and TEM data from the studied SWCNT@BNNT samples, a correlation between BNNT coverage and the intensity of the buckling R‐mode of BNNTs is established, providing a reliable criterion for evaluating BNNT growth efficiency in 1D vdW heterostructures. This work advances the understanding and characterization of 1D vdW heterostructures, offering insights into synthesizing hetero‐nanotubes using other types of SWCNT templates and paving the way for their diverse applications.

Abstract:With well-defined porous structures and dimensions, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can function as versatile templates for the growth of metallic nanostructures with precisely controlled shapes and sizes. Using MOFs as templates, metallic nanostructures can be grown without the need of bulky surfactants and thus preserve their intrinsic surface. Additionally, the high surface area of MOFs can also ensure that the surface of the template metallic nanostructures is readily accessible, which is critical for the proper function of catalysts or sensors. The hybrid metal@MOF structures have been demonstrated to exhibit useful properties not found in either component separately. Here we report the growth of ultrafine metallic nanowires inside one-dimensional MOF pores with well-controlled shape and size. Our study shows that solvent selection plays an important role in controlling precursor loading and the reduction rate inside the MOF pores for the formation of the nanowires. The growth of the well-aligned, ultrathin nanowires was monitored and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence studies, and Brunauer-Emmet-Teller surface area analysis.

Abstract:We report a catalyst-free epitaxial growth of silicon nanowires on polyhedral facets of mother Si nanoparticles by thermal evaporation process. Single silicon nanowires and octopuslike silicon nanowires (OSNWs) were synthesized under different temperatures. The OSNWs have several directions including < 112 >, < 110 >, and the unusual directions of < 100 > and < 111 >. A catalyst-free temperature-dependent epitaxial growth model was suggested. Using the Wulff theory and first principle calculations, these growth directions can be explained by the preferential selection of temperature-dependent surface energies. It thus revealed an important but simple growth model in which the growth directions could be delicately controlled through only determining temperature and substrate orientation. Abstract:The W–B–Li ternary self‐catalytic compounds are designed to grow high‐quality boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs). At the growth temperature, Li is embedded in the lattice gap of W2B5 and the interaction of B‐Li destroys the crystal structure of W2B5, driving the system to achieve liquid W–B–Li, thus catalyzing the nucleation of BNNTs. The large‐scale synthesis of high‐quality boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) has attracted considerable interests due to their applications in nanocomposites, thermal management, and so on. Despite decades of development, efficient preparation of high‐quality BNNTs, which relies on the effective design of precursors and catalysts and deep insights into the catalytic mechanisms, is still urgently needed. Here, a self‐catalytic process is designed to grow high‐quality BNNTs using ternary W–B–Li compounds. W–B–Li compounds provide boron source and catalyst for BNNTs growth. High‐quality BNNTs are successfully obtained via this approach. Density functional theory‐based molecular dynamics (DFT‐MD) simulations demonstrate that the Li intercalation into the lattice of W2B5 promotes the formation of W–B–Li liquid and facilitates the compound evaporation for efficient BNNTs growth. This work demonstrates a high‐efficient self‐catalytic growth of high‐quality BNNTs via ternary W–B–Li compounds, providing a new understanding of high‐quality BNNTs growth.
