Abstract:Point defect engineering has garnered widespread application for enhancing the dynamic behavior of anode materials and improving electrochemical performance. Herein, a hybrid point defect strategy is proposed in Ti-based oxide materials to achieve N doping induced oxygen vacancies (OVs) and subsequently accelerated electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics. This methodology culminates in the fabrication of self-supported nanotube arrays comprising N-doped OVs-rich TiO2 (denoted as N-TNTs). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and electrochemical characterizations validate that, hybrid point defects lead to high electron mobility and perform better diffusion kinetics, as well as higher Li+/Na+ ions adsorption energy barrier and diffusion energy barrier, which in turn improves the rate performance and cycling stability. This research provides a forward-looking and feasible strategy for the application of point defect engineering in anode materials.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays, growing on three-dimensional (3D) porous Ti membrane, were synthesized using a facile nonsolvent-induced phase separation and anodization process. The length of those three-dimensional nanotube arrays could be tuned by prolonging the anodizing time. When the anodizing time is 8 h, the three-dimensional TiO2 nanotube arrays/porous Ti electrode exhibits well cycling stability and ultra-high specific capacity, which is used in lithium-ion batteries, attributed to the high utilization rate of the substrate and the high growth intensity of the active materials. Three-dimensional TiO2 nanotube arrays/porous Ti electrode, at 100 μA·cm−2 with 8 h anodizing time, shows a typical discharge plateau at 1.78 V and exhibits the specific capacity with 2126.7 μAh·cm−2. The novel nanotube arrays@3D porous architecture effectively shortens the electron/ion transmission path, which could pave way for optimizing the design of high-performance anode materials for next-generation energy storage system.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:To achieve uniform carbon coating on TiO2 nanomaterials, high temperature (>500 °C) annealing treatment is a necessity. However, the annealing treatment inevitably leads to the strong phase transformation from TiO2(B) with high lithium ion storage (LIS) capacity to anatase with low LIS one as well as the damage of nanostructures. Herein, we demonstrate a new approach to create TiO2(B)/carbon core/shell nanotubes (C@TBNTs) using a long-chain silane polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) to bind the TBNTs by forming Si-O-Ti bonds. The key feature of this work is that the introduction of PMHS onto TBNTs can afford TBNTs with very high thermal stability at higher than 700 °C and inhibit the phase transformation from TiO2(B) to anatase. Such a high thermal property of PMHS-TBNTs makes them easily coated with highly graphitic carbon shell via CVD process at 700 °C. The as-prepared C@TBNTs deliver outstanding rate capability and electrochemical stability, i.e., reversible capacity above 250 mAh g(-1) at 10 C and a high specific capacity of 479.2 mAh g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 1 C. As far as we know, the LIS performance of our sample is the highest among the previously reported TiO2(B) anode materials.

Abstract:While SnO2 is regarded as a good material for Li ion storage because of its high theoretical capacity, its microstructured powder form cannot be directly used as battery electrode because of a drastic pulverization problem and thus poor cyclic performance. Nanostructuring offers opportunities to circumvent this drawback. We report the construction of SnO2 nanoflake branches onto robust TiO2 nanotube stems. This core-branch nanostructured electrode demonstrate evidently improved Li ion storage properties compared to powders, with more stable cycling processes and higher rate capability. In this design, the TiO2 nanotube stems are realized by atomic layer deposition and offer a low-mass scaffold for the SnO2 nanoflakes and also a charge conductive path.

Abstract:Rational design of electrode materials is essential but still a challenge for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report the design and fabrication of a class of nanocomposite architecture featured by hierarchically structured composite particles that are built from iron oxide nanocrystals and carbon nanotubes. An aerosol spray drying process was used to synthesize this architecture. Such nanoarchitecture enhanced the ion transport and conductivity that are required for high-power anodes. The large volume changes of the anodes during lithium insertion and extraction are accommodated by the particle's resilience and internal porosity. High reversible capacities, excellent rate capability, and stable performance are attained. The synthesis process is simple and broadly applicable, providing a general approach toward high-performance energy storage materials.

Abstract:Nanoscale engineering of regular structured materials is immensely demanded in various scientific areas. In this work, vertically oriented TiO2 nanotube arrays were grown by self-organizing electrochemical anodization. The effects of different fluoride ion concentrations (0.2 and 0.5 wt% NH4F) and different anodization times (2, 5, 10 and 20 h) on the morphology of nanotubes were systematically studied in an organic electrolyte (glycol). The growth mechanisms of amorphous and anatase TiO2 nanotubes were also studied. Under optimized conditions, we obtained TiO2 nanotubes with tube diameters of 70–160 nm and tube lengths of 6.5–45 μm. Serving as free-standing and binder-free electrodes, the kinetic, capacity, and stability performances of TiO2 nanotubes were tested as lithium-ion battery anodes. This work provides a facile strategy for constructing self-organized materials with optimized functionalities for applications.

Abstract:In comparison to the common anatase, rutile and brookite phases, the bronze phase TiO2 (TiO2(B)) is rarely prepared, and obtaining unique TiO2(B) structures, especially those with complex configurations remains a great challenge. This work presents a completely new synthetic approach for fabricating hierarchical nanoporous TiO2(B) assemblies with tailored crystallites and architectures via the reaction between tetrabutyl titanate and normal fatty acids. Three different kinds of normal fatty acids, i.e., pentanoic acid, hexanoic acid, and nonanoic acid were utilized as the sole solvent. After a simple solvothermal treatment, nanoporous TiO2(B) microspheres constructed by [001]-elongated ultrathin nanorods, randomly aggregated ultrafine nanocrystals, and crystallographically oriented nanocrystals were successfully produced separately. Further investigation revealed that the morphology of the hierarchical assemblies could be modified by using foreign substrates to adjust the growth dynamics of TiO2(B) crystals. As a good illustration, by introducing graphene nanosheets into the tetrabutyl titanate-pentanoic acid system, nanosized [001]-elongated-ultrathin-nanorod-constructed nanoporous TiO2(B) assemblies were obtained, which exhibited superior performance as an anode in Li-ion batteries. This work can not only shed new light on TiO2(B) crystallization, but also provide an effective solution for the rational design of complex TiO2(B) micro-/nanoarchitectures for desired applications.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials have been extensively investigated as high-rate lithium-storage materials due to their high surface area and shortened charge-transport length. The pseudocapacitive effect plays a considerable role in electrochemical lithium storage when the electrochemically active materials approach nanoscale dimensions but has received limited attention. Herein, phase-composition-controlled anatase TiO2/TiO2-B nanosheet-assembled hierarchical tubes (denoted as TONS-HTs) were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction, followed by calcination in air. The unique tubular hierarchical structure composed of nanosheet building blocks is beneficial for the penetration of the electrolyte throughout the entire electrode and avoiding the aggregation of nanomaterials. Moreover, rationally modulating the phase composition of the TiO2 hierarchical tubes can contribute to tuning the crystal size and grain boundaries, thus maximizing the pseudocapacitive contribution to achieve high rate capability. The optimum TONS-HT product presents high rate capability (172 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and excellent charge-discharge durability (145 mA h g(-1) at 6 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles). Further, the as-assembled asymmetric hybrid lithium-ion supercapacitor delivers an outstanding power density of approximate to 6 kW kg(-1) when a high energy density of 40 W h kg(-1) is achieved. This work offers an approach to tune the lithium-storage properties of TiO2 by nano-engineering and phase modulation and gives insights into the enhancement of pseudocapacitance-assisted lithium-storage capacity.

Abstract:Cu6Sn5-coated TiO2 nanotube arrays, a novel design for an anode material in lithium ion batteries, were prepared by electroless plating techniques. In this design, a Cu6Sn5 layer was coated on to the inner wall surface of TiO2 nanotubes. The hollow structure of the nanotubes was still retained, although the inner diameter of the nanotubes decreased from 100 nm to 50 nm. The as-prepared Cu6Sn5-coated TiO2 nanotube arrays combine the merits of the high specific capacity of tin and the structural stability of TiO2 nanotubes. The nanotubular structure allows both facile strain relaxation of tin and rapid mass transport, leading to greatly enhanced electrochemical performance in terms of specific capacity, cycle life and rate capability.

Abstract:Owing to their unique structural advantages, TiO2 hierarchical nanostructures assembled by low-dimensional (LD) building blocks have been extensively used in the energy-storage/-conversion field. However, it is still a big challenge to produce such advanced structures by current synthetic techniques because of the harsh conditions needed to generate primary LD subunits. Herein, a novel one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 hierarchical porous fibrous nanostructure constructed by TiO2 nanobelts is synthesized by combining a room-temperature aqueous solution growth mechanism with the electrospinning technology. The nanobelt-constructed 1D hierarchical nanoarchitecture is evolves directly from the amorphous TiO2/SiO2 composite fibers in alkaline solutions at ambient conditions without any catalyst and other reactant. Benefiting from the unique structural features such as 1D nanoscale building blocks, large surface area, and numerous interconnected pores, as well as mixed phase anatase-TiO2(B), the optimum 1D TiO2 hierarchical porous nanostructure shows a remarkable high-rate performance when tested as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (107 mA h g-1 at ∼10 A g-1) and can be used in a hybrid lithium-ion supercapacitor with very stable lithium-storage performance (a capacity retention of ∼80% after 3000 cycles at 2 A g-1). The current work presents a scalable and cost-effective method for the synthesis of advanced TiO2 hierarchical materials for high-power and stable energy-storage/-conversion devices.

Abstract:Arrays of self-supported core-shell nanowire have attracted considerable attention with respect to improved capability for electrochemical energy storage. Herein, we report a facile strategy, involving hydrothermal and liquid phase deposition (LPD) routes, to fabricate nano-coaxial Co3O4/TiO2 arrays with intriguing morphologies, architectures, and chemical compositions. When tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries, these nanohybrids exhibited high reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability and good rate capability. It is assumed that the excellent electrochemical performance originates from the intricate core-shell nanoarchitecture and the coating effect of TiO2, including improved mechanical/chemical stability and good strain accommodation. The improved lithium ion storage performance of the Co3O4/TiO2 nanostructure indicates its potential application as an anode material for electrochemical energy storage and the potential use of TiO2 coating for modification of other anode materials.
Superior Sodium Storage in Na2ti3o7 Nanotube Arrays Through Surface Engineering

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries have attracted extraordinary attention owing to their low cost and raw materials in abundance. A major challenge of practical implementation is the lack of accessible and affordable anodes that can reversibly store a substantial amount of Na ions in a fast and stable manner. It is reported that surface engineered sodium titanate (Na2Ti3O7) nanotube arrays directly grown on Ti substrates can serve as efficient anodes to meet those stringent requirements. The fabrication of the nanotube arrays involves hydrothermal growing of Na2Ti3O7 nanotubes, surface deposition of a thin layer of TiO2, and subsequent sulfidation. The resulting nanoarrays exhibit a high electrochemical Na‐storage activity that outperforms other Na2Ti3O7 based materials. They deliver high reversible capacities of 221 mAh g−1 and exhibit a superior cycling efficiency and rate capability, retaining 78 mAh g−1 at 10 C (1770 mA g−1) over 10 000 continuous cycles. In addition, the full cell consisting of Na2Ti3O7 nanotube anode and Na2/3(Ni1/3Mn2/3)O2 cathode is capable of delivering a specific energy of ≈110 Wh kg−1 (based on the mass of both electrodes). The surface engineering can provide useful tools in the development of high performance anode materials with robust power and cyclability.

Abstract:Well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated from anodization by a subsequent heat treatment. Rate performance and electrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotube arrays were studied intensively. The electrode exhibits excellent rate capabilities at various rates with an average coulombic efficiency reaching 95.6%. It is obvious that TiO2 nanotube array possesses high rate capability and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Owing to their fantastic structural advantages of large surface area and shortened Li+/electron transport pathway, hierarchical tubular nano-/micro-materials have attracted much attention as the anodes used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, rational design and simple fabrication of hierarchical tubular structures assembled by non-particulate nanoscale building blocks still face many challenges. Herein, well-defined ultrathin Li4Ti5O12 nanosheet-assembled hierarchical tubes (LTONS-HTs) were synthesized through a one-step low-temperature hydrothermal lithiation procedure followed by topotactic transformation via thermal decomposition in air. It was proposed here that the formation of the hierarchical tubular structure was led by an inward dissolution and outward recrystallization mechanism. When tested as anode for LIBs, LTONS-HT manifests high rate capability (e.g. 156 mA h g(-1) at 4 A g(-1), and 154 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and maintains an outstanding specific capacity of 128 mA h g(-1) at 8 A g(-1) after 1000 cycles. Moreover, LTONS-HTs is matched with the commercial cathode LiFePO4 to assemble a Li-matched full cell, which demonstrates good rate performance (58 mA h g(-1) at 4 A g(-1)) and very stable energy-storage performance (a capacity retention of similar to 80% after 300 cycles 2 A g(-1)). The superior electrochemical properties verify that the combination of the structural advantages of tubular architecture and ultrathin nanosheet can prompt the lithium insertion/extraction kinetics. Our work offers a new approach to the scalable and cost-effective synthesis of advanced hierarchical Li4Ti5O12 anodes for high-power LIBs.
