Abstract:LiFePO4 nanoplates with an average thickness of less than 50 nm are synthesized through a simple coprecipitation in ethylene glycol solution at 180 degrees C. The evolution of the product species and intensity distribution of XRD patterns during coprecipitation are investigated to verify the formation and growth of the LiFePO4 nanoplates. The results indicate that the time for the formation of LiFePO4 nanoplates with high crystallinity is only 20 min. It is found that the feeding sequence has an important influence on LiFePO4 crystal growth and is useful for the tuning of crystal orientation and particle size.

Abstract:A joint chemical reactor system referred to as an ultrasonic-intensified micro-impinging jetting reactor (UIJR), which possesses the feature of fast micro-mixing, was proposed and has been employed for rapid preparation of FePO4 particles that are amalgamated by nanoscale primary crystals. As one of the important precursors for the fabrication of lithium iron phosphate cathode, the properties of FePO4 nano particles significantly affect the performance of the lithium iron phosphate cathode. Thus, the effects of joint use of impinging stream and ultrasonic irradiation on the formation of mesoporous structure of FePO4 nano precursor particles and the electrochemical properties of amalgamated LiFePO4/C have been investigated. Additionally, the effects of the reactant concentration (C=0.5, 1.0 and 1.5molL−1), and volumetric flow rate (V=17.15, 51.44, and 85.74mLmin−1) on synthesis of FePO4·2H2O nucleus have been studied when the impinging jetting reactor (IJR) and UIJR are to operate in nonsubmerged mode. It was affirmed from the experiments that the FePO4 nano precursor particles prepared using UIJR have well-formed mesoporous structures with the primary crystal size of 44.6nm, an average pore size of 15.2nm, and a specific surface area of 134.54m2g−1 when the reactant concentration and volumetric flow rate are 1.0molL−1 and 85.74mLmin−1 respectively. The amalgamated LiFePO4/C composites can deliver good electrochemical performance with discharge capacities of 156.7mAhg−1 at 0.1C, and exhibit 138.0mAhg−1 after 100 cycles at 0.5C, which is 95.3% of the initial discharge capacity.

Abstract:Morphology-controlled LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 nanoplatelets as high performance cathode material for lithium ion batteries have been synthesized via a simple ascorbic acid-assisted solvothermal process in water-ethanol solvent. The phase structure and morphology of the products were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The results reveal that decreasing the crystallite size along b-axis direction and increasing the surface area of (010) plane can shorten Li+ diffusion path and increase the electrode reaction activity. The LiMn(0.9)Fe0.1PO(4) nanoplatelet holds the high capacity of 145 mA h g(-1), 134 mA h g(-1), 119 mA h g(-1) 97 mA h g(-1) and 68 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 C, 0.5 C, 1 C, 5 C and 10 C respectively, and it can retain 75% of the initial reversible capacity even after 100 cycles at 10 C rate. Abstract:LiFePO4–Li3V2(PO4)3 composite cathode material is synthesized by aqueous precipitation of FeVO4·xH2O from Fe(NO3)3 and NH4VO3, following chemical reduction and lithiation with oxalic acid as the reducer and carbon source. Samples are characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. XRD pattern of the compound synthesized at 700°C indicates olivine-type LiFePO4 and monoclinic Li3V2(PO4)3 are co-existed. TEM image exhibits that LiFePO4–Li3V2(PO4)3 particles are encapsulated with a carbon shell 5–10nm in thickness. The LiFePO4–Li3V2(PO4)3 compound cathode shows good electrochemical performance, and its discharge capacity is about 139.1 at 0.1C, 135.5 at 1C and 116mAhg−1 at 3C after 30 cycles.
Preparation of LiFePO4 Nanoparticles in Virtue of Triblock Copolymer P123 and Their Application in Li-ion Battery

Abstract:LiFePO4 nanoflakes with a lateral size of ca. 100 nm have been prepared by calcining the samples synthesized via a conventional hydrothermal method assisted with triblocks copolymer P123. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were employed to investigate the crystal structure and morphology of the obtained samples. The results show that the hydrothermally synthesized LiFePO4 samples in the presence of P123 are composed of self-assembled flakes with a larger lateral size over 400 nm by the primary nanoflakes. After calcinations at high temperature in flowing N-2, the self-assembled LiFePO4 flakes decompose to nanoflakes with well dispersion. Moreover, due to the nanoscale in size and carbon film encapsulation, the as-prepared LiFePO4 nanoflakes exhibit excellent performance as cathode applied in Li-ions battery.

Abstract:Nano FePO4 center dot xH(2)O powders were synthesized by controlled crystallization method, using Fe(II) compound as the iron source. The nano FePO3 center dot xH(2)O powders were pretreated at 500 degrees C for 4 h in air to obtain nano FePO4 precursor. Then the olivine nano LiFePO4/C composites were obtained through carbonthermal reduction process at different temperatures. The structure, morphology, physicochemical properties and electrochemical properties of the nano FePO4 center dot xH(2)O powder, FePO4 precursor and LiFePO4/C composites synthesized at different temperatures were characterized in detail by thermogravimetric/differential scanning calorimeter (TG/DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement and electrochemical measurement. The result show that the nano LiFePO4/C composite calcined at 700 degrees C for 10 h has fine particle sizes of about 40-100 nm. The BET test shows that the as-prepared nano LiFePO4/C composite has great specific surface area of 79.8 m(2)/g. The nano LiFePO4/C composite cathode material can deliver an initial discharge capacity of 156.5, 134.9, 105.8, 90.3 and 80.9 mAh/g in the voltage range of 2.5-4.2 V, at rate of 0.1C, 1C, 5C, 10C and 15C respectively, which exhibits good rate performance. The nano LiFePO4/C composite also demonstrates excellent cyclic performance.

Abstract:Electrical energy storage devices of high power and energy densities are of vital importance in a wide range of large applications, including electric and hybrid electric vehicles, military portable energy sources, and civic power stations. Although lithium-ion batteries possess the highest energy density among all types of rechargeable batteries, their power densities fall far below the requirements needed by the high-power applications in which the batteries must be able to charge and discharge in very rapid cycles. Using nanoparticles could significantly increase the shuttling rate of lithium-ion because of the reduced diffusion length and increased surface area. However, nanoparticles of most transition metal oxides suffer from side reactions with electrolytes, resulting in poor electrochemical stability at high voltage. LiFePO4 nanoparticles are more attractive because of their relative low voltage and better electrochemical stability. In applications, LiFePO4 nanoparticles are usually agglomerated with significant distributions in size (a few tens to a few hundred nanometers) and shape (irregular or spherical particles), which may affect the overall electrochemical performance of the resulting cathodes. In addition, an extra carbon coating step is required for improving the electrical conductivity of LiFePO4.
Controllable Synthesis and Morphology Evolution of Hierarchical LiFePO4 Cathode Materials for Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:Hierarchical LiFePO4 crystals self-assembled with subunits were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) curve indicates the highly crystalline nature of the prepared samples. The field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that with increased KOH concentrations, the LiFePO4 products evoluted from microspheres self-assembled with microwires to spindle-like structures self-assembled with micro-needles and eventually to flower-like hierarchical nanostructures self-assembled with nanorods. The crystal growth mechanism could be explained by the synergetic effect of pH value and the surface-adsorbed K+ ions. The OH– anions represent pH value dominate the hierarchical morphology under both low and high KOH concentration, while K+ ions play the major role in synthesizing monodispersed LiFePO4 nanorods under medium KOH concentration. Moreover, charge–discharge curves and CV measurements demonstrated good reversible capacities and stable cycle performances of the LFP/C samples.
Olivine LiFePO4 Nanocrystallites Embedded in Carbon-Coating Matrix for High Power Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:Plate-like LiFePO4@C nanostructures, in which LiFePO4 nanocrystallites with a size less than 50nm embedded in carbon coating matrix, with excellent high rate capacity and cycle performance have been successfully prepared via a conventional hydrothermal route in virtue of the assistance of the triblock copolymer P123. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM, and thermogravimetric analysis were employed to characterize the prepared samples. The adsorption of P123 on the surfaces results in the plate-like LiFePO4@P123 nanostructures self-assembled with nanocrystallites. After annealing in inert Ar atmospheres, the plate-like LiFePO4@P123 nanostructures transform to plate-like LiFePO4@C nanostructures due to the carbonization of the adsorbed P123 film matrix. The plate-like LiFePO4@C nanostructures as Li-ion cathode materials deliver excellent high rate capacity and cycle stability, 128mAhg−1 discharge at 10C and 98% retention of the initial discharge capacity (151mAhg−1) at 0.1C after 100 cycles.
Environmentally Benign and Scalable Synthesis of LiFePO4 Nanoplates with High Capacity and Excellent Rate Cycling Performance for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:An economical and scalable synthesis route of LiFePO4 nanoplate precursors is successfully prepared in pure water phase under atmosphere without employing environmentally toxic surfactants or high temperature and high pressure compared with traditional hydrothermal or solvothermal methods, which also involves recycling the filtrate to regenerate LiFePO4 nanoplate precursors and collecting by-product Na2SO4. The LiFePO4 precursors present a plate-like morphology with mean thickness and length of 50-100 and 100-300 nm, respectively. After carbon coating, the LiFePO4/C nanoparticles with particle size around 200 nm can be observed which exhibit a high discharge capacity of 160 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C and 107 mAh g (1) at 20 C. A high capacity retention closed to 91% can be reached after 500 cycles even at a high current rate of 20C with coulombic efficiency of 99.5%. This work suggests a simple, economic and environmentally benign method in preparation of LiFePO4/C cathode material for power batteries that would be feasible for large scale industrial production. Abstract:In the present study, carbon-coated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4/C) is prepared directly by a polyol-assisted pyro-synthesis performed under reaction times of a few seconds in open-air conditions. The polyol solvent, tetraethylene glycol (TTEG), acts as a low-cost fuel to facilitate combustion and the released exothermic energy promotes the nucleation and growth processes of the olivine nanoparticles. In addition, phosphoric acid (used as the phosphorous source) acts as a catalyst to accelerate polyol carbonization. The structure analysis of the as-prepared LiFePO4/C using X-ray, neutron diffraction and 7Li NMR studies suggested the efficacy of the rapid technique to produce highly crystalline phase-pure olivine nanocrystals. The electron microscopy and particle-size distribution studies revealed that the average particle diameters lie below 100 nm and confirmed the presence of a surface carbon layer of 2–3 nm thickness. The thermal and elemental studies indicated that the carbon content in the sample was approximately 5 %. The prepared LiFePO4/C cathode delivered capacities of 162 mA h g-1 at 0.1 °C rates with impressive capacity retention for extended cycling. The polyol-assisted pyro-synthesis, which evades the use of external energy sources, is not only a straightforward, simple and timely approach but also offers opportunities for large-scale LiFePO4/C production.

Abstract:The precipitation method is an efficient, economically feasible, and reproducible synthetic route to cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries with attractive performance characteristics, in particular, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). This paper reviews the mechanisms of the key steps of the synthesis, namely, precipitation of iron phosphate FePO4 followed by its sintering with a lithium-containing raw material to give the LiFePO4 phase. The most probable interactions determining the kinetics of the precipitation process are considered using the data on the dissociation degree of the reacting components. The influence of the nature and concentrations of the commonly used sources of iron (FeSO4, FeCl3, Fe(NO3)3) and phosphorus (H3PO4, NH4H2PO4, (NH4)2HPO4), as well as the precipitation conditions (pH, temperature) on the precipitation efficiency of FePO4 is analyzed. The effect of the nature of the lithium-containing raw material (LiOH, Li2CO3, LiNO3) and the sintering (calcination) temperature on the morphology, phase composition, and electrochemical properties of the resulting LiFePO4 is discussed. The possibility is considered of obtaining spherical particles with high bulk density, which provides high specific and volumetric energy density of electrochemical cells. Based on the relationships established, optimal parameters for the synthesis of LiFePO4 with preliminary FePO4 precipitation step are proposed.

Abstract:A novel hydrothermal stripping technique is developed to synthesize pure LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C cathode materials. The pure sample is directly synthesized by the cation exchange between the organic phase which is prepared with FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O and naphthenic acid, and aqueous phase prepared with H3PO4 and LiOH. SEM exhibits that the primary sizes of the well-distributed LiFePO4 and LiFePO4/C particles are about 150 nm and 100 nm in diameter, respectively. TEM indicates the LiFePO4/C is uniformly coated with a carbon layer about 2.7 nm in size. The as-prepared LiFePO4 exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 135.5 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, and the LiFePO4/C composite sintered at 650 degrees C for 4 h exhibits the best electrode properties with discharge capacities of 151.7, 154.8, 149.8 and 139.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, 0.2 C, 0.5 C and 1.0 C rates, respectively. Morphology and Reaction Mechanism of LiFePO4 Prepared by Hydrothermal Synthesis

Abstract:High-pure and well-crystalline nano-LiFePO_4 was prepared by hydrothermal method using analytically pure FeSO_4,H_3PO_4 and LiOH as the precursors.The results through XRD and SEM analyses show that,with the increase of the reaction temperature from 120℃ to 150℃ and time from 5h to 15h,the synthesized LiFePO_4 particles grow from the irregular congeries of nano-crystals to the rectangular slAbs with thickness of about 200nm and side-length of(about) 800nm.The intermediate product Li_3PO_4 is first synthesized during the reaction,then it reacts with Fe~(2+) to form the high-pure LiFePO_4.A reversible capacity of 163mA·h·g~(-1) at 0.05C or 144mA·h·g~(-1) at(0.5C) has been obtained after the carbon coated with LiFePO_4 is prepared by decomposing polypropylene with the LiFePO_4 powders at 550℃.
Electrochemical Synthesis of Mesoporous Fepo4 Nanoparticles for Fabricating High Performance Lifepo4/C Cathode Materials

Abstract:Unique amorphous FePO4 with particle size ranging from 20 to 80nm has been successfully synthesized by a new cost-effective electrochemical method. This FePO4 possesses a mesoporous structure with specific surface area of 65.2m2g−1 and dominant pore diameter of 23.6nm. The basic formation mechanism has been discussed. These amorphous mesoporous FePO4 nanoparticles can be used as precursors to prepare LiFePO4/C nanocrystals with porous structure. The obtained LiFePO4/C cathode materials exhibit excellent cycling performances. At a 0.5C rate, the discharge capability is above 140.0mAhg−1 and the capacity retention rate is higher than 98% after 50 cycles. The microstructural and electrochemical analyses reveal that these amorphous mesoporous FePO4 nanoparticles are the perfect precursors to prepare LiFePO4/C composite. Furthermore, this facile, cost-effective and green electrochemical strategy can be easily scaled up for commercialization, and also could open avenues towards synthesizing other mesoporous phosphate materials.

Abstract:Nanosized LiFePO4 is a kind of promising material for high performance lithium ion batteries; however, the synthesis of nanosized LiFePO4 still has some challenges in forming an orthorhombic phase in atmospheric liquid phase and protecting the LFP nanoparticles from aggregation, etc. In this work, LiFePO4 nanocrystals were synthesized through a high-temperature (350 °C) liquid-phase reduction method. The size and morphology of nanocrystals can be readily controlled by tuning the ratio of solvents, and the size-dependent behavior of lithium storage performance is also observed. After a carbon-coating surface treatment, rhombic-shaped LiFePO4 nanocrystals display excellent lithium storage properties with high reversible capacities and good cycle life (141.0 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C after 50 cycles etc.). This method can be extended to prepare LiMnPO4 nanorods by substituting iron source with manganese salt.
Amorphous FePO4/Carbon Nanotube Cathode Preparation Via in Situ Nanoprecipitation and Coagulation in a Microreactor.

Abstract:In this article, nanostructured amorphous FePO4 (a-FePO4)-carbon nanotube (CNT) composites, with high purity of FePO4 and a controllable FePO4/C ratio, were directly synthesized by a fast nanoprecipitation process in a microreactor, using Fe(NO3)3 and (NH4)3PO4 as precursors. Oxidized CNTs are well dispersed via strong electrostatic repulsion in a high pH solution system. Subsequently, a-FePO4 nanoparticles are adhered onto CNTs just following the fast nanoprecipitation process; then, the precipitated composites are compacted by ball-milling, forming a compact conductive network with well dispersed and highly loaded active materials. As cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the composites exhibit a capacity of 175.8 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C, close to the theoretical capacity (178 mAh g-1), and a good cycle performance with a reversible capacity of 137.0 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 5 C. Importantly, the enhanced micromixing enables fast nanoprecipitation in suspension and opens a shortcut for constructing nanostructured composites that have potential in functionalization and are easy to handle.

Abstract:LiFePO4/C composite was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction using iron( Ⅱ ) oxalate,ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate and lithium carbonate with a kind of carbohydrate dissolved in the dispersant(ethanol) as carbon sources added to the synthetic precursor. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy observations(SEM), charge/discharge test, cyclic voltammetry(CV) and carbon analysis. The results show that the synthesis of LiFePO4/C has ordered olivine structure. The carbon has two advantages: optimizing particle size of LiFePO4 and increasing the electronic conductivity and high Li+ diffusivity.The cathode material can demonstrate a charge/discharge flat voltage of 3.4 V(vs Li+/Li). Especially the active material with 15 % and 20% carbohydrate added according to the final product of lithium iron phosphate shows very respectively at 0. 1 C rate and the carbon contents in the final production are only 5.17% and 5.29%, respectively.

Abstract:LiFePO4 cathode material was synthesized by high temperature sintering of the homogeneous mixture of Li2CO3, sugar and NH4FePO4-H2O precursor, synthesized from FeSO4, H3PO4 and NH3-H2O. The NH4FePO4-H2O and LiFePO4 structures were characterized by XRD and SEM. The effect of the content of carbine on the structure and electrochemical performance of LiFePO4 is discussed. It is found that NH4FePO4-H2O and LiFePO4 have similar crystal structure, causing replacement reaction between NH4FePO4-H2O and Li2CO3 in the process of sintering. As a result, the LiFePO4 cathode material with good electrochemical performance can be obtained.
