Abstract:We demonstrate novel plasmon resonator geometries consisting of ultra-smooth metal surfaces that support surface plasmon polariton modes exhibiting record-high quality factors in the visible frequency range. The resonators are utilized to achieve record narrow-linewidth, low-threshold surface-plasmon-polariton lasing at optical frequencies, as well as exhibit high figure-of-merit sensing. The lasing threshold of the plasmon-laser was further minimized by leveraging grating-coupled plasmons to pump the lasing-plasmons with strong spatial overlap and minimum perturbation. The results predict potential applications in small-volume optical sensing or energy-efficient coherent on-chip optical sources.

Abstract:We demonstrate integrating a high quality factor lithium niobate microdisk resonator with a free-standing membrane waveguide. Our technique is based on femtosecond laser direct writing which produces the pre-structure, followed by focused ion beam milling which reduces the surface roughness of sidewall of the fabricated structure to nanometer scale. Efficient light coupling between the integrated waveguide and microdisk was achieved, and the quality factor of the microresonator was measured as high as 1.67*10^5.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser micromachining has been a promising technique for fabricating three-dimensional (3D) micro/nano-structures in various kinds of dielectric materials with unprecedented spatial resolutions as well as flexibility in terms of the geometry and the materials can be processed. This unique capability opens opportunities for fabrication of 3D high-quality (Q) microresonators, which are one of the key elements in modern photonic applications. Here, we review the recent progress in fabrication of high-Q microresonators on glass and crystalline substrates by employing femtosecond laser direct writing. We demonstrate the applications of the fabricated microresonators in generating low-threshold lasers, high-sensitivity chemical sensing and nonlinear optical wavelength conversion.

Abstract:Plasmonic resonators have drawn more attention due to the ability to confine light into subwavelength scale. However, they always suffer from a low quality (Q) factor owing to the intrinsic loss of metal. Here, we numerically propose a plasmonic resonator with ultra-high Q factor based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structures. The resonator consists of a disk cavity surrounded by a concentric ring cavity, possessing an ultra-small volume. Arising from the plasmon hybridization between plasmon modes in the disk and ring cavity, the induced bonding hybridized modes have ultra-narrow full wave at half maximum (FWHM) as well as ultra-high Q factors. The FWHM can be nearly 1 nm and Q factor can be more than 400. Furthermore, such device can act as a refractive index sensor with ultra-high figure of merit (FOM). This work provides a novel approach to design plasmonic high-Q-factor resonators, and has potential on-chip applications such as filters, sensors and nanolasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate high quality (intrinsic Q factor ~2.8×106) racetrack microresonators fabricated on lithium niobate (LN) thin film with a free spectral range (FSR) of ~86.38 pm. By integrating microelectrodes alongside the two straight arms of the racetrack resonator, the resonance wavelength around the 1550 nm can be red shifted by 92 pm when the electric voltage is raised from -100 V to 100 V. The microresonators of the tuning range spanning over a full FSR is fabricated using photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching (photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching, PLACE).

Abstract:We theoretically propose a microresonator on a silver chip. The microresonator supports hybrid plasmonic modes with highly localized electromagnetic fields (ultra-small mode volumes ∼0.1 µm3) and long photon lifetime (high quality factors >400) at room temperature, both of which exceed the traditional plasmonic microresonators. The total quality factor is found to be limited by two factors, the metal absorption and the radiation loss, and exhibit a tradeoff with the mode volume. This type of hybrid plasmonic microresonators holds great potential in fundamental physics and applications, for instance, cavity quantum electrodynamics in weak coupling regime and low-threshold microlasers.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a high-quality (Q) factor hybrid plasmonic nanocavity based on distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) with low propagation loss and extremely strong mode confinement. This hybrid plasmonic nanocavity is composed of a high-index cylindrical nanowire separated from a metal surface possessing shallow DBRs gratings by a sufficiently thin low-index dielectric layer. The hybrid plasmonic nanocavity possesses advantages such as a high Purcell factor (F-p) of up to nearly 20000 and a gain threshold approaching 266 cm (1) at 1550 nm, promising a greater potential in deep sub-wavelength lasing applications.

Abstract:Recently, localized spoof surface plasmon polaritons (LSSPPs) have emerged as a new research frontier due to their unique properties and potential applications in integrated circuits. The toroidal dipole is a localized electromagnetic response different from electric and magnetic dipoles. Anapole is the nonradiating source produced by the interference between identical radiation patterns of toroidal and electric dipoles in the far field. This paper proposes a novel high Q-factor compact planar resonator consisting of split-ring resonators to support the LSSPPs anapole at microwave frequency, which shows an apparent nonradiating charge-current configuration. In simulation and measurement, we observe the nonradiating property of the anapole mode. Further, we demonstrate that the LSSPPs anapole resonance has the tunable property, which is very sensitive to structural changes. These might lead to potential applications in the design of plasmonic deformation sensors, cloaking, and absorbers.

Abstract:An ideal Q-factorInterest in the properties of surface plasmon polaritons is intense because of their relevance to plasmonics and nanophotonics. They are electron density waves excited at the interface between metals and dielectric materials and interact strongly with light at a subwavelength-scale. A good starting point for useful applications would be a plasmonic micro- or nanocavity with a high figure of merit, or Q-value; a high Q factor means that the plasmons are strongly confined and bounce around many times inside the cavity before escaping, resulting in a rich range of physical properties. Until now the Q-factor for plasmonic resonant cavities has been limited to values less than one hundred for visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Now Min et al. demonstrate a high-Q 'whispering gallery' microcavity for surface plasmons that is fabricated by coating the surface of high-Q silica microresonator with a thin layer of noble metal. This structure enables room-temperature operation with a Q-factor of around 1,380 in the near infrared for surface plasmon modes — a nearly ideal value. The work also includes a coupling scheme where a tapered optical fibre is in near-contact with the cavity, which provides a convenient way for selectively exciting and probing confined plasmon modes.

Microcavity electrodynamics of hybrid surface plasmon polariton modes in high-quality multilayer trench gratings

Abstract:In common plasmonic structures, absorption and radiation losses are often mutually restricted and can seriously influence the device performance. The current study presents a compound structure composed of multilayer grating stripes and multilayer shallow trenches. A small depth was adopted for the trench configuration to exclude the extra bend loss. These two sections supported Fabry–Perot resonance and cavity modes, respectively, with hybrid modes formed through intercoupling. In addition, the total loss for the entire framework was clearly reduced due to the introduction of the trench geometry, indicating that both absorption and radiation losses were successfully taken into consideration in the compound structure. Significantly, such a low loss realized by the hybridization of surface plasmon polariton modes has rarely been seen before. Moreover, the debatable relationship between the total and partial quality factors was described for the first time based on a hybrid mode analysis to establish a new approach to investigate the different resonance modes. In the detailed calculation process, the relative electric field intensity was first adopted to stipulate the effective areas for the various modes, which is more reasonable than using the common definition that is based on a unit structure. The multilayer trench grating exhibited a relatively low loss without weakening energy localization, which is significant in the design of plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.
An Improved Surface-Plasmonic Nanobeam Cavity for Higher Q and Smaller V

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-Q hybrid surface-plasmon-polariton-photonic crystal (SP3C) nanobeam cavity. The proposed cavities are analyzed numerically using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method. The results show that a Q-factor of 2076 and a modal volume V of 0.16(λ/2n)3 can be achieved in a 50 nm silica-gap hybrid SP3C nanobeam cavity when it operates at telecommunications wavelengths and at room temperature. V can be further reduced to 0.02(λ/2n)3 when the silica thickness decreases to 10 nm, which leads to a Q/V ratio that is 11 times that of the corresponding plasmonic-photonic nanobeam cavity (without silica). The ultrahigh Q/V ratio originates from the low-loss nature and deep sub-wavelength confinement of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, as well as the mode gap effect used to reduce the radiation loss. The proposed structure is fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques and could lead to a wide range of applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of ultrahigh quality (Q) factor silica microdisk resonators on a silicon chip by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching. We achieve a dry-etched optical microresonator with an intrinsic Q factor as high as 1.94 × 10 8 from a 1-mm-diameter silica microdisk with a thickness of 4 μm. Our work provides a chip-based microresonator platform operating in the ultrahigh-Q region that will be useful in nonlinear photonics such as Brillouin lasers and Kerr microcombs.

Abstract:<p>Subwavelength confinement of light with plasmonics is promising for nanophotonics and optoelectronics. However, it is nontrivial to obtain narrow plasmonic resonances due to the intrinsically high optical losses and radiative damping in metallic structures. In this review, a thorough summary of the recent research progress on achieving high‐quality (high‐Q) factor plasmonic resonances is provided, emphasizing the fundamentals and six resonant mode types, including surface lattice resonances, multipolar resonances, plasmonic Fano resonances, plasmon‐induced transparency, guided‐mode resonances, and Tamm plasmon resonances. The applications of high‐Q plasmonic resonances in spectrally selective thermal emission, sensing, single‐photon emission, filtering, and band‐edge lasing are also discussed.</p>

Surface-Plasmon-Polariton Laser Based on an Open-Cavity Fabry-Perot Resonator

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically-pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. Low perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure-of-merit refractive-index sensing of analytes interacting with the open cavity.

Abstract:A design for enhancing the quality (Q) factor of a photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR) is introduced. The highest Q factor based on simulations is 121,000. The analysis of momentum space distributions of the electric field profile for PCRR resonance shows that a high Q factor of a PCRR is attributed to the reduction of tangential k-vector component inside the leaky region. A high Q factor of 75,200 is experimentally demonstrated for a modified PCRR on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. The high-Q-factor PCRR demonstrated here will be beneficial for channel drop filters, lasers, sensors, and other applications. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Key in the application of plasmonics is the realization of low loss or high quality (Q) factor resonances. Nanoparticle arrays are systems capable of sustaining remarkably high Q‐factor resonances through the hybridization of plasmonic and photonic modes, known as surface lattice resonances (SLRs). SLRs result from the coupling of localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) to in‐plane orders of diffraction known as Rayleigh anomalies (RAs). To date, the highest Q‐factors have been achieved with the (±1, 0) diffraction orders. However, these Q‐factors are highly sensitive to the angle of excitation. Here, a strategy is presented to generate high Q‐factor SLRs with low dispersion by coupling LSPRs to the (0, ±1) diffraction orders. 2D arrays of silver nanoparticles are investigated experimentally and numerically, and it is shown that the Q‐factor of SLRs critically depends on the quality of the metal film, the detuning between RAs and LSPRs, and the absorption of adhesive layer used between the substrate and the metallic nanoparticles. These silver nanoparticle arrays can achieve Q‐factors higher than 330 in the visible range. These extraordinarily high Q‐factors could be increased to values above 1500 if no adhesive layer is used, which could significantly improve sensors and enhance nonlinearities in plasmonic systems. Surface lattice resonances emerging from the coupling of localized resonances to diffraction orders in arrays of nanoparticles constitute a unique platform to achieve high quality factor resonances in plasmonic systems. Here, a strategy to achieve remarkably high quality factors (>330) in the visible range with low dispersion is reported.
