Abstract:Materials with hyperbolic dispersion have recently garnered much attention in the optical and quantum communities due to their potential for controlling large- $k$ waves over a broad wavelength range. Their rarity has motivated many fundamental studies at microwave frequencies to improve their applications with full utilization of large- $k$ waves. Here, we report that hyperbolic dispersion can be mimicked by exploiting the structural dispersion of electromagnetic modes in waveguides filled with anisotropic dielectric materials. As demonstrated, the material parameters in the waveguide are subtly designed, and effective hyperbolic dispersion is achieved, which can reduce the dielectric loss and nonlocal effects related to the finite thickness of the discrete constituent elements of metamaterials at microwave frequencies. Numerical simulations are performed, including negative and anomalous refractions, negative reflection, and directional hyperbolic polaritons to validate the analytical results. The present method paves the way for the development of hyperbolic metamaterials at microwave frequencies.
Ultrafast Dynamic Switching of Optical Response Based on Nonlinear Hyperbolic Metamaterial Platform

Abstract:The pursuit of high-speed and on-chip optical communication systems has promoted extensive exploration of all-optical control of light-matter interactions via nonlinear optical processes. Here, we have numerically investigated the ultrafast dynamic switching of optical response using tunable hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) which consists of five pairs of alternating layers of indium tin oxide (ITO) and SiO2. The nonlinearity of the HMM is analyzed by the ultrafast dynamics of the hot electrons in the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) ITO. Our approach allows large and broad all-optical modulation of the effective permittivity and topology of the HMM on the femtosecond time-scale. Based on the proposed HMM platform, we have shown considerable tunability in the extinction ratio and Purcell enhancement under various pump fluence. In addition, we have achieved all-optical control of the coupling strength through depositing plasmonic resonators on the HMM platform. A significant tuning of the coupled resonance is observed by changing pump fluence, which leads to a switching time within 213 fs at a specific wavelength with a relative modulation depth more than 15 dB. Abstract:A novel design of a tunable optical switch based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metasurface is proposed, which can work as an electro-optical or an all-optical switch, and be tuned by gate-voltages, incident angles, and intensity of pump light. The result shows that the coupling of the ENZ mode and plasmon resonance lead to an obvious Rabi splitting which can be observed in the transmission spectrum. Numerical analysis also demonstrates that the coupling belongs to the ultra-strong coupling regime. The proposed design can achieve electro-optical switching with a large modulation depth of up to ~ 17 dB, all-optical switching with an extinction ratio exceeding 5 dB and an ultrafast response time of 650 fs.

A positive-to-negative switching of the effective dielectric constant is achieved. Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials represent a powerful toolkit for selectively transmitting and localizing light through cavity resonances, enabling the study of mesoscopic phenomena and facilitating the design of photonic devices. In this experimental study, we demonstrate the feasibility of engineering and actively controlling cavity modes, as well as tuning their mutual coupling, in an ENZ multilayer structure. Specifically, by employing a high-birefringence liquid crystal film as a tunable nanocavity, the polarization-dependent coupling of resonant modes with narrow spectral width and spatial extent was achieved. Surface forces aparatus (SFA) allowed us to continuously and precisely control the thickness of the liquid crystal film contained between the nanocavities and thus vary the detuning between the cavity modes. Hence, we were able to manipulate nanocavities anti-crossing behaviors. The suggested methodology unlocks the full potential of tunable optical coupling in epsilon-near-zero metamaterials and provides a versatile approach to the creation of tunable photonic devices, including bio-photonic sensors, and/or tunable planar metamaterials for on-chip spectrometers.

Abstract:A periodic metamaterial comprising three graphene-strips and four C-type graphene square-ring is proposed herein to realize plasmon-induced transparency (PIT). Based on the characteristics of graphene dynamic mod-ulation, we effectively broaden of the transparent window the relative bandwidth to realize the broadband PIT. The influence of the polarized light angle on PIT is investigated, demonstrating that the polarization angle affects PIT significantly, the dynamic change from multiple plasma-induced transparency to single-PIT can be realized. By tuning the Fermi levels in the graphene, our proposed metamaterial structure allows preparing not only a multi-frequency optical switch with modulation degrees of the amplitude (MDA) up to 95.6% and insertion loss (IL) down to 0.315 dB at 5.35 THz but also preparing optical switches with MDA > 90% and IL < 0.35 dB in bands ranging from 5.28 to 5.48 THz. The refractive index sensitivity of metamaterials is also investigated, and the simulation results show that a sensitivity of 0.7 THz/RIU is achieved, meaning an excellent sensors can be prepared. Thus, the proposed structure provides a new idea for the design of terahertz multi-frequency switches and refractive index sensors.

Abstract:We present an ultra-compact modulator with a length of 15 nm by utilizing the squeezing and tunneling ability of the Epsilon-Near-Zero metamaterial. The finite-different time-domain simulations show the insertion loss is roughly -0.27 dB while the 3-dB extinction ratio is obtained with a 0.8 V gate voltage. The device's footprint is as small as 0.01 μm2. This modulator consumes low power and can potentially be ultrafast.

Abstract:Dual Fano resonances are realized in a nonlinear photonic metamaterial consisting of periodic arrays of asymmetrical meta-molecules etched in a gold film coated with azobenzene polymer layer made of poly[(methyl methacrylate)-co-(disperse red 13 acrylate)]. Enormously enhanced photoisomerization associated with resonant excitation brings about a large refractive index variation in the azobenzene polymer. Under excitation of a weak pump light as low as 0.61 kW/cm2, a large shift of 50 nm in the Fano resonance wavelength is obtained. Compared with previous reports, the threshold pump intensity is reduced by seven orders of magnitude while a large tunability is maintained simultaneously.

Abstract:Adjustable zero phase delay and equiphase-control are demonstrated by Q. Zhao and co-workers in single and multilayer dielectric particle arrays with high index and low loss. As shown on page 6187, the polarization-independent near-zero permeability is the origin of the wave-control near the first Mie magnetic resonance. The proposed design paves the way for subwavelength devices and opens up new avenues for miniaturization and integration of terahertz and optical components.

Abstract:Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) feature a uniform electromagnetic mode over a large area in arbitrary shapes, enabling many applications including high-transmission supercouplers with arbitrary shapes, direction-independent phase matching for nonlinear optics, and collective emission of many quantum emitters. However, most ZIMs reported to date are passive; active ZIMs that allow for dynamic modulation of their electromagnetic properties have rarely been reported. Here, we design and fabricate a magnetically tunable ZIM consisting of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) pillars sandwiched between two copper clad laminates in the microwave regime. By harnessing the Cotton–Mouton effect of YIG, the metamaterial was successfully toggled between gapless and bandgap states, leading to a “phase transition” between a zero-index phase and a single negative phase of the metamaterial. Using an S-shaped ZIM supercoupler, we experimentally demonstrated a tunable supercoupling state with a low intrinsic loss of 0.95 dB and a high extinction ratio of up to 30.63 dB at 9 GHz. We have also engineered a transition between the supercoupling state and the topological one-way transmission state at 10.6 GHz. Our work enables dynamic modulation of the electromagnetic characteristics of ZIMs, enabling various applications in tunable linear, nonlinear, quantum, and nonreciprocal electromagnetic devices.

Abstract:The next generation of flat optic devices aspires to a dynamic control of the wavefront characteristics. Here, we theoretically investigated the reconfigurable capabilities of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metasurface augmented with resonant dielectric rods. We showed that the transmission spectrum of the metasurface is characterized by a Fano-like resonance, where the metasurface behavior changed from perfect magnetic conductor to epsilon-and-mu-near-zero material responses. The abrupt variation between these two extreme material responses suggests potential applications in dynamic metasurfaces. We highlighted the causality aspects of ENZ metasurfaces with a transient analysis and numerically investigated different reconfigurable mechanisms. Thus, this work introduces a new strategy for dynamic wavefront engineering.

Abstract:Fano‐type metamaterials switched by active materials enable the control of light in metaoptics with high sensitivity. However, they exhibit a long‐standing trade‐off between modulation depth and operational bandwidth. Here, the authors circumvent this limitation by proposing a novel Fano‐type metasurface with high contrast of tunability and broadband ultrafast switching, which is extremely appealing for next‐generation flat photonic devices. Miniaturized ultrafast switchable optical components with high efficiency and broadband response are in high demand to the development of optical imaging, sensing, and high‐speed communication. Sharp Fano‐type resonance switched by active materials is one of the key concepts that underpins the control of light in metaoptics with high sensitivity. However, actuating such metasurfaces exhibits a long‐standing trade‐off between modulation depth and operational bandwidth. Here, the limitations are circumvented by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and experimental realization of an achromatic Fano metasurface so that a high contrast of tunability with ultrafast switching rate over a broad range of frequency is achieved. By developing the physics of inter‐mode coupling, the Fano metasurface is designed according to a complete phase diagram derived from coupled mode theory. Unlike conventional Fano metasurfaces, the cross‐polarized inter‐metaatoms coupling is discovered as a superior ability of high‐efficiency broadband achromatic polarization conversion. To prove the ultrasensitive nature, a metadevice is constructed by incorporating a thin amorphous Ge layer with a weak photoconductivity perturbation. Transmission modulation over broadband frequency range from 0.6 to 1.1 THz is thus successfully realized, featuring its merits of modulation depth over 90% and On–Off–On switching cycle less than 10 ps.

Near-perfect absorption in epsilon-near-zero structures with hyperbolic dispersion

Abstract:We investigate the interaction of polarized electromagnetic waves with hyperbolic metamaterial structures, whereby the in-plane permittivity component $\epsilon_x$ is opposite in sign to the normal component $\epsilon_z$. We find that when the thickness of the metamaterial is smaller than the wavelength of the incident wave, hyperbolic metamaterials can absorb significantly higher amounts of electromagnetic energy compared to their conventional counterparts. We also demonstrate that for wavelengths leading to $\Re(\epsilon_z) \approx 0$, near-perfect absorption arises and persists over a range of frequencies and subwavelength structure thicknesses.

Ultra-wide plasmonic tuning of semiconductor metasurface resonators on epsilon near zero media

Abstract:Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift ({\Delta}n>1.5) far greater than conventional thermo-optic effects. In undoped films we demonstrate more than 10-fold change in the thermal free-carrier concentration producing a near-unity negative refractive index shift. Exploiting both effects within a single resonator system, intrinsic InSb wires on a heavily doped (epsilon near zero) InSb substrate, we demonstrate dynamically tunable Mie resonances. The observed larger than line-width resonance shifts ({\Delta}{\lambda}>1.5{\mu}m) suggest new avenues for highly tunable and reconfigurable mid-infrared semiconductor metasurfaces.

Two-color all-optical switching in Si-compatible epsilon-near-zero hyperbolic metamaterials

Abstract:All-optical ultrafast switches enabled by artificial materials are considered at the forefront of the next generation of photonic communications and data processing. During the last two decades, the photonic applications, impact, and interest have tremendously increased in the framework of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) photonics. Here, we experimentally propose a novel multilayered metamaterial utilizing Si-compatible titanium nitride and indium-tin-oxide materials. The device exhibits two effective ENZ wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared spectrum, with switching times down to a few hundred femtoseconds at the corresponding ENZ regions. This novel approach will bring ENZ metamaterials towards new hybrid integrated CMOS photonic circuit components for ultrafast all-optical terahertz modulation.

Abstract:We designed a metasurface for sensing and optical switching using an E-shaped bulk Dirac semimetal (BDS). The numerical results show that an extremely narrow Fano resonance can be achieved when terahertz waves are incident on the metasurface. At the Fano resonance frequency , the directions of the currents on the E-shaped BDS point towards the centre part, resulting in direct cancellation of the net dipole moment and suppression of electromagnetic dipole radiation. Owing to the overlap of the LSPR and diffraction mode frequencies on the E-shaped BDS, strong coupling can be achieved, resulting in photon energy confinement into the lattice units . In terms of tunable performance, by changing the Fermi energy of the BDS, narrowband optical switching with a modulation depth of 92.9% can be realised. In terms of sensing performance, our design is capable of achieving a sensitivity of 0.7 THz/RIU and FOM of 1178. In addition, our design is easier to prepare in the future by only consisting of E-shaped BDS and silicon substrate. The proposed design opens up possibilities for the development of multifunctional and ultrasensitive terahertz sensors, filters, and optical switching.
