Abstract:A novel design of a tunable optical switch based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metasurface is proposed, which can work as an electro-optical or an all-optical switch, and be tuned by gate-voltages, incident angles, and intensity of pump light. The result shows that the coupling of the ENZ mode and plasmon resonance lead to an obvious Rabi splitting which can be observed in the transmission spectrum. Numerical analysis also demonstrates that the coupling belongs to the ultra-strong coupling regime. The proposed design can achieve electro-optical switching with a large modulation depth of up to ~ 17 dB, all-optical switching with an extinction ratio exceeding 5 dB and an ultrafast response time of 650 fs.

Abstract:We study, both theoretically and experimentally, strong interaction between a quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) supported by a resonant metasurface with an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) guided mode excited in an ultrathin ITO layer. We observe and quantify the strong coupling regime of the QBIC-ENZ interaction in the hybrid metasurface manifested through the mode splitting over 200 meV. We also measure experimentally the resonant nonlinear response enhanced near the ENZ frequency and observe the effective nonlinear refractive index up to ∼4 × 10-13 m2/W in the ITO-integrated dielectric nanoresonators, which provides a promising platform for low-power nonlinear photonic devices.
Unlocking optical coupling tunability in epsilon-near-zero metamaterials through liquid crystal nanocavities

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials represent a powerful toolkit for selectively transmitting and localizing light through cavity resonances, enabling the study of mesoscopic phenomena and facilitating the design of photonic devices. In this experimental study, we demonstrate the feasibility of engineering and actively controlling cavity modes, as well as tuning their mutual coupling, in an ENZ multilayer structure. Specifically, by employing a high-birefringence liquid crystal film as a tunable nanocavity, the polarization-dependent coupling of resonant modes with narrow spectral width and spatial extent was achieved. Surface forces aparatus (SFA) allowed us to continuously and precisely control the thickness of the liquid crystal film contained between the nanocavities and thus vary the detuning between the cavity modes. Hence, we were able to manipulate nanocavities anti-crossing behaviors. The suggested methodology unlocks the full potential of tunable optical coupling in epsilon-near-zero metamaterials and provides a versatile approach to the creation of tunable photonic devices, including bio-photonic sensors, and/or tunable planar metamaterials for on-chip spectrometers.

Abstract:Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials offer promising candidates for the study of strong light -matter interactions due to their exotic optical properties. Quasibound states in the continuum (QBICs) supported by all-dielectric metasurfaces possess the characteristics of high quality factors with flexible tunability, allowing for significant field enhancement and more degrees of freedom for manipulating light -matter interaction at the nanoscale. Here, we propose a two-dimensional all-dielectric metasurface combined with a thin polar dielectric film, which supports the ENZ mode and the inherent transverse optical (TO) phonon mode. We demonstrate a strong QBIC-ENZ coupling with giant and highly tunable coupling strengths. The proposed metasurface can not only support QBIC modes, but can also excite the ENZ mode in polar dielectric film. With the help of the strong field localization and flexible modulation properties of QBIC, we further realize a selective QBICENZ-TO three-mode strong coupling in the hybrid system, demonstrating a large Rabi splitting over 22.1 meV (178 cm - 1 ) at room temperature, which is four times higher than that of the QBIC-ENZ two-mode coupling. We also demonstrate that the three-mode coupling strength can be easily tuned by varying the thickness of the ENZ thin film, which provides an effective approach for the manipulation of the strong light -matter interaction. The proposed all-dielectric platform exhibits strong coupling strength and flexible design tunability, which is expected to provide a different route for the design of ultracompact optical devices at mid-infrared frequencies.

Abstract:Electrically tunable metasurfaces open new doors for manipulating the phase, amplitude and polarization of light in ultrathin layers. Compared with metal assisted metasurfaces, all-dielectric transmission metasurfaces-with outstanding feature of low loss, especially incorporating with new electro-optical materials-show great potential for the next generation flat optics. In this study, by combining the epsilon-near-zero effect in indium tin oxide (ITO) with guided-mode resonance, we propose novel electrically tunable all-dielectric metasurface architectures with versatile functions for widespread potential application. The inserted periodic ITO and hafnium oxide layers sandwiched in silicon act as two metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors in a single period to disturb the resonance wavelength in the near-infrared spectral range under the voltage applied. For the one-dimensional structure, the transmittances of this metasurface at 1512 and 1510 nm change 20 and -14 dB under 0∼5 V bias voltage, respectively. In addition, the bilayer structure performs well in double-waveband applications, indicating that more layers can support more operation wavebands. Meanwhile, the two-dimensional structure works as a polarization insensitive device when setting the same structural parameters in both orthogonal directions. The proposed architecture, with various merits including ultra-compact size, high-speed and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatibility, provides a multifunctional and multi-degree-of-freedom design, as well as enormous potential applications in more complicated flat optics.

Abstract:Graphene metasurface has attracted a lot of attentions due to the unique tunability for exotic electromagnetic properties. In this work, we propose and numerically investigate a tunable metasurface with two non-coplanar and inter-perpendicular graphene nanoribbon arrays. The variation of transmission at different substrate thickness and the coupled mode are analyzed. It is shown that the Rabi-like splitting can be achieved by the coupling between localized and delocalized graphene surface plasmon polaritons. Tunable coupling strength and positions with different gate-voltages have been discussed. The effect of relaxation time and oblique incidences to resonant responses are also investigated. Additionally, we find an optical analogue of a spring, where the spectral dip vibrates around its equilibrium position at a certain wavelength. Our study suggests that the proposed structure is potentially attractive for realization of tunable double-channel filter, optical switch, and variable optical attenuator based on the graphene metasurface.

Abstract:Optical media with dispersion-free large nonlinearity are highly desired for a broad range of applications, such as spectroscopy, all-optical data processing, and quantum information. Here, we report that a metasurface composed of indium-tin-oxide nano-step array can exhibit weak-dispersion and enhanced optical nonlinearity in the region of the spectrum where the real part of its effective permittivity is close to zero. Such nonlinear features are attributed to the offset of the structural dispersion and material dispersion of the metasurface in its epsilon-near-zero region. The nonlinear refractive index of our metasurface keeps at around n2=1.5×10−2 cm2/GW in a wide wavelength range from 1300 to 1510 nm, and the nonlinear absorption coefficient is greater than 1×105 cm/GW in the range from 1280 to 1780 nm. Our results open a novel approach to applications of nonlinear photonic devices requiring high integration density and stableperformance.

Abstract:The next generation of flat optic devices aspires to a dynamic control of the wavefront characteristics. Here, we theoretically investigated the reconfigurable capabilities of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metasurface augmented with resonant dielectric rods. We showed that the transmission spectrum of the metasurface is characterized by a Fano-like resonance, where the metasurface behavior changed from perfect magnetic conductor to epsilon-and-mu-near-zero material responses. The abrupt variation between these two extreme material responses suggests potential applications in dynamic metasurfaces. We highlighted the causality aspects of ENZ metasurfaces with a transient analysis and numerically investigated different reconfigurable mechanisms. Thus, this work introduces a new strategy for dynamic wavefront engineering.

Abstract:An active method of continuously tuning the effective permittivity of a hyperbolic metamaterial at visible and near-infrared spectra is introduced in this letter. A transparent conducting oxide, whose optical properties can be altered accurately by applying an external voltage, is inserted into a traditional metal-dielectric multilayer structure to increase the degree of freedom for tuning the epsilon-near-zero point by shifting the topological transition point. The tuning effect is explained in detail by combining the relationship between permittivity and voltage with wavevector analysis. This may promote other active applications of hyperbolic metamaterials and ultrafast tunable optoelectronic devices. (C) 2016 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Transparent conductive oxides have been widely used in optoelectronic devices owing to their special optical property. In near-infrared wavelength region, the real part of the dielectric constant will decrease from positive to negative. Within epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region, strong interaction will occur between light and matter, and wide phase modulation will be achieved. Herein, using a bias voltage of 0-5 V, the carrier concentration within a region (thickness: 1 nm) near the interface of an ITO-based MOS structure was adjusted, and a phase modulation close to 265 degrees in a 1470-nm wavelength was achieved. Based on this modulation, the practical applications of the proposed structure in the fields of beam deflection and focusing have been explored. Furthermore, a dual-gated MOS structure, which further expanded the phase coverage region, was designed.

Abstract:Fully reconfigurable metasurfaces would enable new classes of optical devices that provide unprecedented control of electromagnetic beamforms. The principal challenge for achieving reconfigurability is the need to generate large tunability of subwavelength, low-Q metasurface resonators. Here, we demonstrate large refractive index tuning can be efficiently facilitated at mid-infrared wavelengths using novel temperature-dependent control over free-carrier refraction. In doped InSb we demonstrate nearly two-fold increase in the electron effective mass leading to a positive refractive index shift ({\Delta}n>1.5) far greater than conventional thermo-optic effects. In undoped films we demonstrate more than 10-fold change in the thermal free-carrier concentration producing a near-unity negative refractive index shift. Exploiting both effects within a single resonator system, intrinsic InSb wires on a heavily doped (epsilon near zero) InSb substrate, we demonstrate dynamically tunable Mie resonances. The observed larger than line-width resonance shifts ({\Delta}{\lambda}>1.5{\mu}m) suggest new avenues for highly tunable and reconfigurable mid-infrared semiconductor metasurfaces.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a micro-electro-mechanically tunable metamaterial with enhanced electro-optical performance by increasing the number of movable cantilevers in the symmetrical split ring resonator metamaterial unit cell. Simulations were carried out to understand the interaction of the incident terahertz radiation with out-of-plane deforming metamaterial resonator. In order to improve the overall device performance, the number of released cantilever in a unit cell was increased from one to two, and it was seen that the tunable range was doubled and the switching contrast improved by a factor of around five at 0.7 THz. This simple design approach can be adopted for a wide range of high performance electro-optical devices such as continuously tunable filters, modulators, and electro-optic switches to enable future photonic circuit applications.

Abstract:In recent years, the rapid development of dynamically tunable metasurfaces has provided a new avenue for flexible control of optical properties. This paper introduces a transmission-type electrically tunable metasurface, employing a series of subwavelength-scale silicon (Si) nanoring structures with an intermediate layer of Al2O3-ITO-Al2O3. This design allows the metasurface to induce strong Mie resonance when transverse electric (TE) waves are normally incident. When a bias voltage is applied, the interaction between light and matter is enhanced due to the formation of an electron accumulation layer at the ITO-Al2O3 interface, thereby altering the resonance characteristics of the metasurface. This design not only avoids the absorption loss of metal nanostructures and has a large modulation depth, but also shows compatibility with complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology.

Abstract:Conclusions We have proposed and theoretically analyzed an electro-tunable extreme Huygens' BIC metasurface consisting of LiNbO 3 elliptical cylinders. After optimizing the geometry parameter of the structure, we have realized over 2π phase retardation of transmitted light while maintaining over 96% transmission amplitude. The metasurface can be continuously tuned based on the EO property of the LiNbO 3 without a drastic change in the transmission. The proposed LiNbO 3 metasurface will be a good candidate for developing reconfigurable optical components in optical wavefront shaping, displaying, and other applications.

Abstract:All the optical properties of materials are derived from dielectric function. In spectral region where the dielectric permittivity approaches zero, known as epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region, the propagating light within the material attains a very high phase velocity, and meanwhile the material exhibits strong intensity-dependent optical nonlinearity. The interplay between the linear and nonlinear optical response of these materials thus offers unprecedented pathways for all-optical control and device design. Here we demonstrate ultrafast all-optical modulation based on a typical ENZ material of indium tin oxide (ITO) nanocrystals (NCs), accessed by a wet chemistry route. In the ENZ region, we find that the optical response in these NCs is associated with a strong nonlinear character, exhibiting a rapid sub-picosecond response time (corresponding to frequencies greater than 2 THz) and a modulation depth of as large as ~160%. This large optical nonlinearity is partly benefited from the highly confined geometry in addition to the ENZ enhancement effect of the ITO NCs. Based on these ENZ NCs, we successfully demonstrated a fiber optical modulator that allowed switching of continuous laser wave into femtosecond laser pulses. Combined with facile processibility and tunable optical properties, these solution-processed ENZ NCs may offer a scalable and printable material solution for dynamic photonic and optoelectronic devices.
Optical properties of metal-dielectric based epsilon near zero metamaterials

Abstract:We demonstrate epsilon near zero (ENZ) metamaterials operating at visible wavelengths near 660 nm. The structure consists of a multilayer stack composite of alternating layers of Ag and TiO2, 16 nm and 54 nm thick, respectively. We found that a high refractive index material like TiO2 (n ∼ 2.3) is preferable to a lower index material to achieve good “mixing” resulting in a composite that better approximates a homogenous effective medium. Optical spectroscopy shows that transmission and absorption responses are consistent with ENZ behavior and match well with simulations. The transmission reduces with increasing number of multilayer pairs due to metal absorption. We have proposed an ENZ grating structure to boost the optical transmission at the ENZ frequencies. The grating structures have openings that enable potential introduction of gain media to combat losses or nanoscale emitters for light emission control.

Abstract:Electro-optical tuning metasurfaces are particularly attractive since they open up routes for dynamic reconfiguration. The electro-optic (EO) modulation strength essentially depends on the sensitivity to the EO-induced refractive index changes. In this paper, lithium niobate (LiNbO3) metasurfaces integrated with liquid crystals (LCs) are theoretically investigated. Cylinder arrays are proposed to support quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs). The quasi-BIC resonances can significantly enhance the lifetime of photons and the local field, contributing to the EO-refractive index changes. By integrating metasurfaces with LCs, the combined influence of the LC reorientation and the Pockels electro-optic effect of LiNbO3 is leveraged to tune the transmitted wavelength and phase spectrum around the quasi-BIC wavelength, resulting in an outstanding tuning sensitivity up to Δλ/ΔV ≈ 0.6 nm/V and relieving the need of high voltage. Furthermore, the proposed structure can alleviate the negative influence of sidewall tilt on device performance. The results presented in this work can foster wide application and prospects for the implementation of tunable displays, light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and spatial light modulators (SLMs).
