Abstract:The high efficiency on-chip optical phase shifters are required in almost every photo-electronic integration systems. In this work, we present a novel silicon optical circuit for the efficient phase shifiting. A polarization multiplexing scheme is proposed to improve the effective phase tuning length. The circuit is fabricated and in depth analyzed, exhibiting a 3.57 times effective group optical length enhancement compared with the traditional design. Moreover, A thermal-tuning phase shift based on such polarization multiplexing structure was experimentally demonstrated. Within the size of $75 \times 320~\mu \text{m}^{2}$ , a 63.8% power saving for thermal phase shift was measured in the proposed circuit. With considerable efficiency, such circuit is expected to serve as a general underlying structure for the silicon based integrated phase tuning.

Abstract:This letter presents an ultra-broadband passive vector modulator phase shifter applied to a 4-element tranceiver. A compact cascaded three-stage differential coupler with anti-jamming connective mode and orthogonal placement method is presented, which amalgamates the through-path and coupled-path signal to reduce the phase and magnitude error of the wideband I/Q generator. A magnetic coupling enhanced lattice power synthesizer is proposed, which synthesizes I/Q signals for the accurate wideband target phase interpolation. The proposed phase shifter occupies an extraordinary compact chip area (1.6mm-by-0.6mm) in 0.13 mu m CMOS process. Measurement results demonstrates that the proposed phase shifter achieves high precision with maximum RMS phase and magnitude error 3.5 degrees and 0.82dB, respectively, in the range of 3-16GHz. In addition, simulated IP1dB is as high as +19dBm with no power consumption.

Abstract:The performance of traditional silicon oxide based phase shifter is limited by thermo-optic coefficient, making it difficult to achieve high-efficiency phase modulation. A relatively high index contrast (1.5%) SiO2 waveguide is utilized in our work. Thus, the cladding layer could be thinner since a higher confinement can be achieved. The heating efficiency is improved by reducing the thickness of the cladding layer together with the etched air trenches on both sides of the waveguide. The simulation results show that the heating efficiency of the overlay air trench is about 20% higher than the conventional one. Segment heating electrodes are also used to reduce the heating voltages. Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is fabricated to characterize the performance of the phase shifter, and the measured extinction ratio of MZI is larger than 34 dB with a heating power 69 mW/π.

Abstract:Conventional thermo-optic devices-which can be broadly categorized to that with and without a thermal isolation trench-typically come with a tradeoff between thermal tuning efficiency and tuning speed. Here, we propose a method that allows us to directly define the tradeoff using a specially designed thermo-optic phase shifter with an interleaved isolation trench. With the design, the tuning efficiency and speed can be precisely tailored simply by controlling the duty ratio (suspended length over total heater length) of the suspended design. Phase shifters are one of the main components in photonic-integrated circuits, and having phase shifters with a flexible design approach may enable the wide adoption of photonic applications such as an optical neural network and LiDAR.

Abstract:Low-loss and energy-efficient phase shifters are an effec-tive tool to reduce the power consumption of large-scale photonic integrated circuits. In this work, a low-loss and power-efficient thermo-optic phase shifter has been demon-strated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The multimode spiral waveguide is optimized to obtain lower power con-sumption and low cross talk. The waveguide width is beyond the single-mode region in consideration of low propagation loss. The optimized ultra-low loss 180 degrees Bezier bends are used to further reduce the bending loss. The experimental results show that the excess loss of the phase shifter is only 0.36 dB at 1550-nm wavelength and the power consumption is 4.87 mW/pi. (c) 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:In this paper, a non-volatile polarization-insensitive 1×2 silicon optical switch utilizing phase-change materials is presented. The presented device is composed of three polarization beam combiners/splitters, two directional couplers with phase change materials, and a polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing. By adjusting the phase state of phase-change material, polarization-insensitive switching behavior is realized. As an example, the proposed switch using Ge2Sb2Te5 is comprehensively optimized and analyzed based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method. The designed device can have a crosstalk of less than −15.98 dB and an insertion loss of smaller than 0.95 dB over the C-band in the case of TE polarization, while a maximum crosstalk of −13.53 dB and a maximum insertion loss of 1.37 dB can be obtained within the C-band in the case of TM polarization.

Abstract:A thermo-optic phase shifter is of great importance in silicon photonics. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve a good performance in insertion loss and in response speed by using traditional thermal tuning through a metallic heater. In this paper, based on coupled-mode theory, we propose a method to place high-loss materials close to the optical waveguide while maintaining the low loss of the optical device, which ensures the low insertion loss (similar to 0.78 dB) of the phase shifter. Additionally, thanks to the very short distance between the rib waveguide and the chromium (Cr) heater, the phase shifter exhibits a high response speed (1.15 mu s in rise time and 2.18 mu s in decay time) with a measured bandwidth (BW) of 186 kHz. Moreover, we further optimize the structure of phase shifters, leading to the reduction of pi-shift power consumption from 25.1 mW to 13.6 mW. Our proposed phase shifters have great potential in large-scale silicon photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:A microwave photonic phase shifter based on dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. A polarization multiplexed double sideband (DSB) signal is produced by a DPol-MZM. An optical bandpass filter (OBPF) follows after the DPol-MZM to filter out the optical carrier and one sideband. The polarization multiplexed signal is converted into a linear polarization light by a polarizer (Pol), and then beat at a photodiode (PD) to obtain the phase shifted signal. Experiments are carried out, and a continuous phase shift from −180° to 180° over a wide microwave frequency range of 10–33GHz can be achieved by changing the polarization state using a polarization controller (PC). We also studied the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) in the experiments. The features of this proposed phase shifter are large operation bandwidth, full-range 360° phase shift, and simple structure.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photonic phase shifter with − 180° to 180° phase-tunable range and multi-band frequency-conversion feature is proposed. The main device is a single polarization division multiplexing dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (PDM-DPMZM). The PDM-DPMZM is employed to generate an optical frequency comb (OFC) and a carrier-suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) in two mutually orthogonal polarizations. Simultaneously, an electrical phase shifter is adopted to control the initial phase of the CS-SSB. The simulation results show, a RF signal with the frequency of 4.3 GHz (C-band) can be down-converted to 1.4 GHz (L-band). Meanwhile, it can also be up-converted to 5.7 GHz (C-band), 10 GHz (LO signal), 14.3 GHz (Ku-band) and 18.6 GHz (K-band) with their phases continuously tuned from − 180° to 180°. Furthermore, the proposed structure features flat power response, frequency-independent operation, simple configuration, easy phase tuning, better ability to cope with DC drift and wide operation bandwidth. The unwanted signal suppression ratio (USSR) and the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of the phase shifter are also studied.

Abstract:We report on an experimental 3 x 3 thermo-optical switch on silicon on insulator. By controlling a single combined phase shifter, light from any input waveguide can be directed to any output waveguide, showing a simple control method and highly integrated structure as compared to the conventional multiway optical switches. Furthermore, the proposed optical switch can be generalized to be a 1 x N and N x N optical switch without an extra phase shifter. The switch is fabricated by complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology. By experiment, full 3 x 3 switching functionality is demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.55 mu m, with an average cross talk of -11.1 dB and a power consumption of 97.5 mW. Abstract:We present a 1 × 4 Y-branch digital optical switch in which S-bend variable optical attenuators are integrated. The S-bend waveguides, which are always introduced to connect the switch and the standard fiber array, are made use of and designed as variable optical attenuators. A compact device with low crosstalk and larger branching-angle is obtained. The device is fabricated on the thermo-optic polymer materials,and the performance of the device is measured. With an applied driving power of less than 200mW, the device has a low crosstalk of less than - 35dB at a wavelength of 1.55μm.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel microwave photonic full-range phase shifter with simultaneous frequency-multiplying capability is proposed. The main device is a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM) embedded in a Sagnac loop. Under the assistance of two electrical phase shifters (EPS) and a following polarizer (Pol), the optical carrier is eliminated with desired phase tunable carrier-suppressed double-sideband (CS-DSB) signal reserved. So after photoelectric conversion, the frequency-multiplied phase tunable signals are generated. The frequency multiplication factor (FMF) switching and phase tuning operation of multiplied signals can be achieved easily by adjusting the corresponding EPS. The simulation results show that the proposed structure driven by a 10 GHz RF signal can generate a frequency-doubled signal (20 GHz) or frequency-quadrupled signal (40 GHz) that features full-phase tunable range and flat power response. What is more, the proposed phase shifter has a relatively good robustness to the non-ideal factors, large frequency operation range and good frequency tunable capability.

Abstract:We design a resistive heater optimized for efficient and low-loss optical phase modulation in a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide and characterize the fabricated devices. Modulation is achieved by flowing current perpendicular to a new ridge waveguide geometry. The resistance profile is engineered using different dopant concentrations to obtain localized heat generation and maximize the overlap between the optical mode and the high temperature regions, while simultaneously minimizing optical loss due to free-carrier absorption. A 61.6 micrometer-long phase shifter was fabricated in a CMOS process with oxide cladding and two metal layers. The device features a phase-shifting efficiency of 24.77 +/- 0.43 mW/pi and a -3 dB modulation bandwidth of 130.0 +/- 5.59 kHz. The insertion loss measured for 21 devices across an 8-inch wafer was only 0.23 +/- 0.13 dB. Considering the prospect of densely integrated photonic circuits, we also quantify the separation necessary to isolate thermo-optic devices in the standard 220 nm SOI platform.

Abstract:An orthogonal vector-sum integrated microwave photonic phase shifter (IMWPPS), consisting of mode-order converter multiplexers (MOCMs), a variable optical power splitter (VOPS), an optical switch (OS) and fixed time delay lines (FTDLs), was theoretically demonstrated in a silicon-on-insulator wafer. MOCMs, as a key element of our device, were employed to generate orthogonal vector signals and served as lossless optical combiners. Combining with the thermo-optical VOPS, OS and FTDLs, the microwave phase shift of 0∼2π could be achieved by a refractive index variation of 0∼15×10(-3) in the millimeter wave band. The corresponding tuning resolution was about 1.64°/°C. This work, for the first time to our knowledge, provides an attractive solution to transferring a vector-sum method based bulk MWPPS into a integrated one, which is very important for large-scale optically controlled phase array antenna.

Abstract:A tunable liquid crystal phase shifter based on opposed coplanar waveguide (OCPW) with excellent phase shift capability per wavelength is proposed. The proposed OCPW not only has good transmission characteristics and a quasi-TEM operating mode similar to the CPW, but also avoids the metalized via and complicated bias circuit in designing the phase shifter. Consequently, the phase shifter is easy to fabricate and miniaturize. The main structure of the phase shifter includes two functional components. One is the transition section, in which the flaring grounds and gradient stubs are utilized to realize the impedance and wave-number matching to the OCPW phase shift part; the other is a tunable phase shift section, which is composed of the OCPW centerline and ground with staggered periodic stubs stretching out. To realize tunable phase shifting by applying different DC bias voltages, a DC bias network capable of blocking RF signal is elaborately designed. An equivalent circuit model of the phase shift part is established and represented using the ABCD matrix, so that the relation between the related parameters and the phase shift per wavelength can be easily obtained to guide the design. The measurement results demonstrate that the proposed phase shifter achieves a total of 300 degrees phase shifting, as high as 289 degrees/lambda 0 phase shift per wavelength, and a good figure-of-merit of 59 degrees/dB at 14.5 GHz. The phase shifter features the reflection coefficient less than -10 dB and the transmission coefficient bigger than -6 dB from 9.3 to 15 GHz.

Abstract:A thermo-optic phase shifter is proposed and demonstrated by utilizing the high-Q resonance in high-index-contrast grating (HCG). The Q-factor up to similar to 12000 is measured in a footprint of 110 mu m x 300 mu m. By heating the HCG with paired metal strip micro-heaters, the optical resonance shifts, which induces phase modulation. A phase shift of similar to 1.2 pi under heating power of similar to 32 mW is directly observed and demodulated from the fringes shifting in a Michelson interferometer. The proposed configuration can also be extended to realize high-speed phase shift by adopting electro-optical modulation. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a linear and stable photonic RF phase shifter based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) using a two-drive scheme. To avoid the effect of the residual optical carrier and overcome the lowest frequency limit from the optical filter, a local microwave signal and a signal up-converted from the under-phase-shifted RF signal are applied to the two RF inputs of the DPMZM, respectively A phase shifted RF signal is generated by heating the two first-order upper sidebands located in the passband of the optical filter. A continuous and linear phase shift of more than 360 degrees and power variation of less than +/- 0.15 dB at 1 GHz are achieved by simply tuning the bias voltage of the modulator A phase tuning bandwidth of more than 17 MHz and phase drift of less than 0.5 degrees within 2000 s are also observed. Abstract:In this paper, we propose to achieve high-efficiency polarization conversion based on spatial dispersion modulation of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPP). Different k is firstly designed in the two transverse directions by aligning an SSPP-supporting fishbone structure in y direction while maintaining free space in x direction. The orthogonal phase difference is introduced by larger k of SSPP waves for y-polarized component of incident waves. Meanwhile, to achieve high efficiency, gradient k in z-direction is designed so that the y-polarized component of incident waves can be coupled perfectly as SSPP waves. By rotating the fishbone structure with respect to the polarization direction of incident waves, different polarization states for transmitted waves can be realized. As an example, a polarization converter prototype with the central working frequency f = 8GHz was designed, fabricated, and measured. Both the simulation and experiment demonstrate the high-efficiency linear-to-circular (LTC) polarization conversion in 6.9-9.6GHz.
