Abstract:We demonstrate a stable and linear photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a differential-group-delay element and the polarization sensitive effect of an optical phase modulator. The phase shift can be tuned continuously over 360 degrees for RF signals over 40GHz with an electrical control voltage from -7.5 to +7.5V.

Abstract:This Letter presents a 29-/35 GHz dual-band high-gain hybrid pi-network-based phase shifter. The hybrid pi-network realised by combining electrical tuning through capacitors and magnetic tuning through transformers extends the phase shift range. Furthermore, the phase shift modules are inserted between the vertically stacking transistors to realise the embedded phase shifting with the minimum loss. The Gm-stages offer the additional signal gain to offset attenuation from the passive phase shifter. This prototype, fabricated in a 28 nm CMOS process, demonstrates a 360 degrees continuous phase shift range with a maximum gain of 22 dB at 35 GHz, and 240 degrees continuous phase shift range with a maximum gain of 20 dB at 29 GHz. It consumes 26 mW power and 1.25 mm x 0.75 mm chip area.

Abstract:The invention discloses a hybrid broadband high-precision phase shifter integrated circuit, which belongs to the technical field of radio frequency integrated circuits, and is formed by cascading a pi-type L-C phase shift unit, a 22.5-degree switch-type phase shift unit, a 45-degree switch-type phase shift unit, a broadband quadrature signal generator, a quadrant selection unit and a transformer.The pi-type L-C phase shift unit is used for realizing 5.625-degree and 11.25-degree phase shift states; the two switch type phase shift units respectively realize 22.5-degree and 45-degree phase shift states, the quadrature signal generator is used for synthesizing a pair of quadrature differential signals, and the quadrant selection unit switches the positive and negative polarities of the quadrature signals through a switch to realize a 360-degree phase shift range. Compared with a traditional switch type phase shifter, the hybrid phase shifter has the advantages of being wide in band, lowin insertion loss, high in precision and the like.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable broadband photonic radio frequency (RF) phase shifter based on a silicon microring resonator. This scheme utilizes the thermal nonlinear effect of the silicon microring to change the electrical phase of the RF signal with a wide tuning range. A prototype of the phase shifter is experimentally demonstrated for a 40-GHz signal with a 0-4.6-rad tuning range.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a linear and stable photonic RF phase shifter based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) using a two-drive scheme. To avoid the effect of the residual optical carrier and overcome the lowest frequency limit from the optical filter, a local microwave signal and a signal up-converted from the under-phase-shifted RF signal are applied to the two RF inputs of the DPMZM, respectively A phase shifted RF signal is generated by heating the two first-order upper sidebands located in the passband of the optical filter. A continuous and linear phase shift of more than 360 degrees and power variation of less than +/- 0.15 dB at 1 GHz are achieved by simply tuning the bias voltage of the modulator A phase tuning bandwidth of more than 17 MHz and phase drift of less than 0.5 degrees within 2000 s are also observed. Abstract:A new two-outputs polymer photonic RF phase shifter,which the band-wide is 12 GHz,is designed in this paper. The waveguide structure and the electrode system are simulated,and the output characteristic of the phase shifter is analyzed as well.The designed phase shifter could realize 360°continuous linear phase shift at the two ports,and the output power fluctuation is less than 3 dB.The device has good phase-shifting performance,small size,and is favourable for array integration.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photonic phase shifter with − 180° to 180° phase-tunable range and multi-band frequency-conversion feature is proposed. The main device is a single polarization division multiplexing dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (PDM-DPMZM). The PDM-DPMZM is employed to generate an optical frequency comb (OFC) and a carrier-suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) in two mutually orthogonal polarizations. Simultaneously, an electrical phase shifter is adopted to control the initial phase of the CS-SSB. The simulation results show, a RF signal with the frequency of 4.3 GHz (C-band) can be down-converted to 1.4 GHz (L-band). Meanwhile, it can also be up-converted to 5.7 GHz (C-band), 10 GHz (LO signal), 14.3 GHz (Ku-band) and 18.6 GHz (K-band) with their phases continuously tuned from − 180° to 180°. Furthermore, the proposed structure features flat power response, frequency-independent operation, simple configuration, easy phase tuning, better ability to cope with DC drift and wide operation bandwidth. The unwanted signal suppression ratio (USSR) and the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) of the phase shifter are also studied.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a microwave photonic phase shifter based on a tunable silicon photonic interleaver. This device consists of a microring resonator, a tunable interleaver, and a 2 x 1 multimode interferometer (MMI). By thermally tuning the interleaver, a linear phase shift of 188 degrees is realized with a linearity of 0.08 and a radio-frequency (RF) power variation within 1 dB for a 40-GHz signal.

Abstract:In this work, a novel phase shifter using five unit cells of the varactor-loaded composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) is presented, achieving a continuously tunable phase-shift of approximate 360° at the exact 2.4 GHz. The CRLH-TL unit cell includes 3 electrically tunable varators (two series ones and a shunt one) which allow phase shift change at 2.4 GHz, and a biasing network is introduced, which allows the unit cells to be controlled by a single voltage. The capacitance of all the varactors can be controlled at the same time, and the full 360° range of phase shift can be achieved. To prove the concept, the final layout of the phase shifter can be fulfilled. Measured results demonstrate a tunable phase shift of 360° at the operation frequency of 2.4 GHz when bias voltage varies from 0 V to 4 V, along with an optimal impedance matching. A miniature size of 9 mm, which is 1/8 λ g , is optimized for each cell to ensure a compact size for the final layout of the phase shifter. Excellent performance such as return loss greater than 14.5 dB, and insertion loss blow 2.5 dB is also indicated in our work. Good agreement between simulation and measurement is observed to certify the validity of the proposed work.

Abstract:A photonic RF phase shifter using a dual parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and a tunable optical band-pass filter is demonstrated. The dependences of the linearity and power stability of the proposed RF phase shifter on the performance of the DPMZM and the optical filter are theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. In the experiment, a continuously tunable range of more than 450 degrees phase shift and a small power variation of less than 1.6 dB for a wideband RF range (8-12 GHz) are achieved by simply tuning the bias voltage of the DPMZM. Abstract:Phase shifter is widely applied in some area, including communication and radar. In the study, the principle of broadband analog phase shifter on I-Q modulating is introduced, which is validated by the theory design using Ansoft serenade. The microwave phase shifter on I-Q modulating broadband is simulated and the corresponding entity is designed. Finally, some test are done to the phase shifter, and we sum up the design experience, all those can provide some design experience with the engineers.

Abstract:A novel wideband photonic microwave phase shifter with 360-degree phase tunable range is proposed based on a single dual-polarization quadrature phase shift-keying (DP-QPSK) modulator. The two dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulators (DP-MZMs) in the DP-QPSK modulator are properly biased to serve as a carrier-suppressed single-sideband (CS-SSB) modulator and an optical phase shifter (OPS), respectively. The microwave signal is applied to the CS-SSB modulator, while a control direct-current (DC) voltage is applied to the OPS. The first-order optical sideband generated from the CS-SSB modulator and the phase tunable optical carrier from the OPS are combined and then detected in a photodetector, where a microwave signal is generated with its phase controlled by the DC voltage applied to the OPS. The proposed technique is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. Microwave signals with a carrier frequency from 10 to 23 GHz are continuously phase shifted over 360-degree phase range. The proposed technique features very compact configuration, easy phase tuning and wide operation bandwidth. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The electro-optic effect and the field distribution of Lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) transparent ferroelectric ceramic waveplates are reviewed. The feedback single rotatable-variable PLZT waveplate polarization controller is constructed based on the variable retardation and rotatable axes of a PLZT waveplate. For this controller the simulated annealing algorithm is applied to dither optimization considering the limit of phase shift and the endless rotatable axes. Simulated research results show that this controller can transform any varying general input polarization state into an arbitrary linear output polarization state and in the desired direction more than 98% of total light intensity is attained. On controlling the phase shift can vary within 0~2π, so the fluctuation caused by resetting can be avoided.

Abstract:A microwave photonic phase shifter based on dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-MZM) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper. A polarization multiplexed double sideband (DSB) signal is produced by a DPol-MZM. An optical bandpass filter (OBPF) follows after the DPol-MZM to filter out the optical carrier and one sideband. The polarization multiplexed signal is converted into a linear polarization light by a polarizer (Pol), and then beat at a photodiode (PD) to obtain the phase shifted signal. Experiments are carried out, and a continuous phase shift from −180° to 180° over a wide microwave frequency range of 10–33GHz can be achieved by changing the polarization state using a polarization controller (PC). We also studied the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) in the experiments. The features of this proposed phase shifter are large operation bandwidth, full-range 360° phase shift, and simple structure.
