Abstract:Non-mechanical LiDAR systems have attracted extensive research interests due to their advantages of robustness and high beam-steering speed. Recently, spectral scanning has emerged as a promising solid-state beam-steering method, which combines dispersive elements with frequency-swept laser sources to perform ultrafast beam-steering. However, swept light sources used in LiDAR systems, such as semiconductor lasers and supercontinuum sources, are usually suffering from low sweep rate, bulky and high-cost that severely hinder the development of spectral-scanning LiDAR. Here, we propose a non-mechanical spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR system based on a simple compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The fast-swept VCSEL together with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is employed for high-speed beam-steering. Millimeter-level ranging accuracy and a lateral resolution of 0.286° with an overall depth voxel acquisition rate of 128 kHz are achieved experimentally.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:The beam-steering device is a critical component in LiDAR systems for 3D imaging. Solid-state beam-steering devices attract the most attention for their advantages of robustness, fast beam-steering speed, and stability. However, solid-state beam-steering devices, such as optical phased arrays (OPAs), are challenging to realize 2D scanning ability. Here we employed a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) in the LiDAR system to realize all solid-state two-dimensional (2D) beam-steering based on dispersion only. A frequency swept laser source is used for performing optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging and 2D beam steering simultaneously. The 2D disperser is compact and can be easily implemented owing to its simple structure. The mechanism of continuous scanning and ranging is beneficial for obtaining high lateral resolution, and a lateral resolution of 0.06° is achieved. 3D maps of the object at a distance of 2 m are obtained with cm-level ranging precision. The frame rate of the proposed LiDAR system only depends on the wavelength-tuning speed of the swept laser source, with the potential to realize ultrafast solid-state LiDAR systems.

Abstract:A FMCW LiDAR system of both the distributed feedback laser and external cavity laser is established in baseband beat notes, rather than up-conversion to an intermediate frequency to exclude flicker noise. Meanwhile, utilizing fast-scanning MEMS mirrors, high-quality real-time (1 fps) 4-D images of the slow-moving object (10 mm/s) can be directly constructed at the baseband with a central frequency as low as 100 kHz and a small Doppler shift. The proposed LiDAR architecture based on such a low-frequency baseband significantly improves the optical power budget on the transmitter side and eliminates the costly high-speed sampling circuits on the receiver side.

A large FoV of 8°×9.5° and an angular resolution of 0.5°×0.19° are achieved. By controlling the scanning rate of the grating and rotator, adaptive imaging resolution can be obtained.

Abstract:Spectral scan, or beam steering by only wavelength tuning enables inertia-less fast-scanning LiDAR, while the field of view is fundamentally limited by the total available wavelength range and the dispersion ability of common gratings. Here, we propose to relieve the restriction by combining a diffraction grating and a low-cost diffractive element, which enables wide-angle two-dimensional beam steering. An FoV far beyond the reach of other spectral scan methods can be achieved. Several diffractive elements samples are fabricated to demonstrate spectrally scanning field of views of $7.7^{\circ } \times 10^{\circ }$ and $7.7^{\circ } \times 29^{\circ }$ from an 100-nm wavelength tuning range. Also, to show the potential to further extend the spectral scan range, blazed diffractive elements are fabricated with high diffraction efficiency, which corresponds to a spectral scan range up to 40.3°. Based on the structure, a solid-state coherent LiDAR system is built. Three-dimensional imaging with mm-level range resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:Flash LiDAR is a photoelectric system that can acquire a 3D image by emitting a diffuse pulsed laser beam, and hence is suitable for both autopilot and spacecraft flight control. Achieving long-range and high-speed, especially in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In this paper, a set of laser imaging prototype based on 2×6 VCSEL array and 32×32 MPPC array image sensor is developed, the range calibration is completed, and relevant experimental research is carried out. The frame rate of the system can reach 10kHz, the detection probability of 120m range can reach 86.23%, and the maximum walk error is about 0.6m under different reflectivity. The 3D imaging of the vehicle can be realized at about 70m, the horizontal spatial resolution is less than 5cm, and the ranging precision after ten shots average is within 10cm by calculating the centroid of a histogram. The detection probability can be improved by using the time-gating method. After multiple measurements, a 120m "laser imaging through window" can be realized in sunlight. This LiDAR system has the advantages of small volume, light weight and fast detection speed.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) with scanning beam has been widely used in autonomous driving and large-scale manufacturing, where the fast-changing scene is of great interest. However, the acquisition rate of current LiDAR is limited by beam steering speed and the round-trip delay, hindering the development of video-rate LiDAR. Here, we uniquely combine all-optical encoders with wavelength-division multiplexing devices to implement spectro-temporal encoding on the illumination light. Parallel detection and fast spectral scanning can be achieved with only one laser and one single photodetector. Our result shows the fastest single-pixel LiDAR to date, and the detection speed can be multiplied with scalability. We demonstrate 3.56-fold improvement of speed for a maximum of 75 m detection range compared with a serial LiDAR. A record acquisition rate of 21.38 MHz for a maximum of 25 m detection range is obtained. This approach has the potential to break the limitation on current ultrafast single-pixel LiDAR and opens a new paradigm for ultrafast-frame-rate imaging systems.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been widely used in autonomous driving and large-scale manufacturing. Although state-of-the-art scanning LiDAR can perform long-range three-dimensional imaging, the frame rate is limited by both round-trip delay and the beam steering speed, hindering the development of high-speed autonomous vehicles. For hundred-meter level ranging applications, a several-time speedup is highly desirable. Here, we uniquely combine fiber-based encoders with wavelength-division multiplexing devices to implement all-optical time-encoding on the illumination light. Using this method, parallel detection and fast inertia-free spectral scanning can be achieved simultaneously with single-pixel detection. As a result, the frame rate of a scanning LiDAR can be multiplied with scalability. We demonstrate a 4.4-fold speedup for a maximum 75-m detection range, compared with a time-of-flight-limited laser ranging system. This approach has the potential to improve the velocity of LiDAR-based autonomous vehicles to the regime of hundred kilometers per hour and open up a new paradigm for ultrafast-frame-rate LiDAR imaging.

Abstract:With the continuing prosperity of LiDAR markets, the demand of a fast‐scanning, high‐precision and inexpensive LiDAR system is growing rapidly. In this paper, we disclose a fast‐switchable ferroelectric liquid crystal Dammann grating and polarization grating‐based holographic projection and detection system for 3D imaging devices and LiDAR with an extended field of view. The field of view of the proposed system can achieve ~80 ° with <0.5cm precision at a significantly lower cost. This improvement increases LiDAR versatility and performance in various scenarios.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on 32-channel silicon nitride optical switch with the assistance of transmission blazed grating. The optical switch exhibits rather low power consumption of 7.2 mW/π. Besides, end-fire antennas offer high optical efficiency with less reflection. Non-mechanical two-dimensional beam steering with range of 14.32° × 9.94° and beam divergence of <0.1° is achieved by wavelength tuning and onchip optical path switching. The proposed system eliminates complex control and time-consuming array phase calibration, providing a flexible, scalable and effective solution for all solid-state coaxial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Abstract:An optical system for scanning angle amplification in tunable laser based all-solid lidar is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated with θ=51° when tuning the wavelength from 1531.2nm to 1566.6nm. We have achieved 22 points beam-steering which is identical to the tunable laser channels. The device has several microseconds beam switching speed and 1.4° beam divergence. The size of the device is compact which is only 5cm×4.5cm×1.8cm, and the total system is low-cost.

Abstract:The beam scanner is a predominant part in the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The solid-state beam-steering device has emerged as a promising candidate technology for a beam scanner with the advantages of robustness, stability, and high scanning speed. Here we propose a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR system with an in-fiber solid-state beam scanner. A 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (TFG) is first employed to achieve in-fiber solid-state spectral scanning in the LiDAR system. A maximum output efficiency of 93.7% is achieved with proper polarization control. A single-mode fiber is then used to fabricate a 2-cm 45 degrees TFG, which significantly reduces the size and the cost of the beam scanner in the LiDAR system. We experimentally realize 3D imaging of targets placed at a distance of 1.2 m based on our proposed LiDAR system.
