Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) with scanning beam has been widely used in autonomous driving and large-scale manufacturing, where the fast-changing scene is of great interest. However, the acquisition rate of current LiDAR is limited by beam steering speed and the round-trip delay, hindering the development of video-rate LiDAR. Here, we uniquely combine all-optical encoders with wavelength-division multiplexing devices to implement spectro-temporal encoding on the illumination light. Parallel detection and fast spectral scanning can be achieved with only one laser and one single photodetector. Our result shows the fastest single-pixel LiDAR to date, and the detection speed can be multiplied with scalability. We demonstrate 3.56-fold improvement of speed for a maximum of 75 m detection range compared with a serial LiDAR. A record acquisition rate of 21.38 MHz for a maximum of 25 m detection range is obtained. This approach has the potential to break the limitation on current ultrafast single-pixel LiDAR and opens a new paradigm for ultrafast-frame-rate imaging systems.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has been widely used in autonomous driving and large-scale manufacturing. Although state-of-the-art scanning LiDAR can perform long-range three-dimensional imaging, the frame rate is limited by both round-trip delay and the beam steering speed, hindering the development of high-speed autonomous vehicles. For hundred-meter level ranging applications, a several-time speedup is highly desirable. Here, we uniquely combine fiber-based encoders with wavelength-division multiplexing devices to implement all-optical time-encoding on the illumination light. Using this method, parallel detection and fast inertia-free spectral scanning can be achieved simultaneously with single-pixel detection. As a result, the frame rate of a scanning LiDAR can be multiplied with scalability. We demonstrate a 4.4-fold speedup for a maximum 75-m detection range, compared with a time-of-flight-limited laser ranging system. This approach has the potential to improve the velocity of LiDAR-based autonomous vehicles to the regime of hundred kilometers per hour and open up a new paradigm for ultrafast-frame-rate LiDAR imaging.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), as a hot imaging technology in both industry and academia, has undergone rapid innovation and evolution. The current mainstream direction is towards system miniaturization and integration. There are many metrics that can be used to evaluate the performance of a LiDAR system, such as lateral resolution, ranging accuracy, stability, size, and price. Until recently, with the continuous enrichment of LiDAR application scenarios, the pursuit of imaging speed has attracted tremendous research interest. Particularly, for autonomous vehicles running on motorways or industrial automation applications, the imaging speed of LiDAR systems is a critical bottleneck. In this review, we will focus on discussing the upper speed limit of the LiDAR system. Based on the working mechanism, the limitation of optical parts on the maximum imaging speed is analyzed. The beam scanner has the greatest impact on imaging speed. We provide the working principle of current popular beam scanners used in LiDAR systems and summarize the main constraints on the scanning speed. Especially, we highlight the spectral scanning LiDAR as a new paradigm of ultrafast LiDAR.Additionally, to further improve the imaging speed, we then review the parallel detection methods, which include multiple-detector schemes and multiplexing technologies. Furthermore, we summarize the LiDAR systems with the fastest point acquisition rate reported nowadays. In the outlook, we address the current technical challenges for ultrafast LiDAR systems from different aspects and give a brief analysis of the feasibility of different approaches.

Abstract:Non-mechanical LiDAR systems have attracted extensive research interests due to their advantages of robustness and high beam-steering speed. Recently, spectral scanning has emerged as a promising solid-state beam-steering method, which combines dispersive elements with frequency-swept laser sources to perform ultrafast beam-steering. However, swept light sources used in LiDAR systems, such as semiconductor lasers and supercontinuum sources, are usually suffering from low sweep rate, bulky and high-cost that severely hinder the development of spectral-scanning LiDAR. Here, we propose a non-mechanical spectral-scanning frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR system based on a simple compact tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The fast-swept VCSEL together with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is employed for high-speed beam-steering. Millimeter-level ranging accuracy and a lateral resolution of 0.286° with an overall depth voxel acquisition rate of 128 kHz are achieved experimentally.

Abstract:Abstract Simultaneous and efficient ultrafast recording of multiple photon tags contributes to high-dimensional optical imaging and characterization in numerous fields. Existing high-dimensional optical imaging techniques that record space and polarization cannot detect the photon’s time of arrival owing to the limited speeds of the state-of-the-art electronic sensors. Here, we overcome this long-standing limitation by implementing stereo-polarimetric compressed ultrafast photography (SP-CUP) to record light-speed high-dimensional events in a single exposure. Synergizing compressed sensing and streak imaging with stereoscopy and polarimetry, SP-CUP enables video-recording of five photon tags ( x, y, z : space; t : time of arrival; and ψ : angle of linear polarization) at 100 billion frames per second with a picosecond temporal resolution. We applied SP-CUP to the spatiotemporal characterization of linear polarization dynamics in early-stage plasma emission from laser-induced breakdown. This system also allowed three-dimensional ultrafast imaging of the linear polarization properties of a single ultrashort laser pulse propagating in a scattering medium.

Abstract:Single -photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has played an important role in areas ranging from target identification and 3D imaging to remote sensing. Its high sensitivity provides the feasibility of lightweight LiDAR systems for the resource -limited airborne and spaceborne platforms. Here, we design and demonstrate an airborne single -photon LiDAR towards the compact, small -sized, and low -power payload. To reduce the system size, we utilize small telescopes with an optical aperture of 47 mm and develop the sub -pixel scanning approach to enhance the imaging resolution. With the fine scanning mirrors, we validate the super -resolution ability in the ground experiment by surpassing the system's resolution by 2.5 times and achieve high -resolution 3D imaging in the airborne experiment. To realize low -power LiDAR, we employ photon -efficient computational algorithms and high -quality single -photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays. This enables us to reconstruct images from noisy data even under challenging conditions of two signal photons per pixel. Using the airborne single -photon LiDAR system, we demonstrate 3D imaging during daytime over a large area for remote sensing applications and show the capability to reveal the detailed features of various landforms and objects. Abstract:This Letter presents a method for fast-scanning speed LiDAR based on front focal length modulation in the transmitter, which compensates for the influence of the laser divergence angle on the scanning speed at close range of the long-range LiDAR. According to the thin lens equation for Gaussian beams, the laser divergence angle is affected by the distance from the lens to the object (the waist of the laser beam). The scanning speed of the LiDAR is correlated to the laser divergence angle during LiDAR operation, and the scanning speed can be improved by expanding the laser divergence angle by enlarging the front focal length of the transmitter. Through experimental analysis, the laser dispersion angle modulation of LiDAR can improve the scanning speed under the premise of guaranteeing the target detection performance in close-range detection.

Abstract:Spectral scan, or beam steering by only wavelength tuning enables inertia-less fast-scanning LiDAR, while the field of view is fundamentally limited by the total available wavelength range and the dispersion ability of common gratings. Here, we propose to relieve the restriction by combining a diffraction grating and a low-cost diffractive element, which enables wide-angle two-dimensional beam steering. An FoV far beyond the reach of other spectral scan methods can be achieved. Several diffractive elements samples are fabricated to demonstrate spectrally scanning field of views of $7.7^{\circ } \times 10^{\circ }$ and $7.7^{\circ } \times 29^{\circ }$ from an 100-nm wavelength tuning range. Also, to show the potential to further extend the spectral scan range, blazed diffractive elements are fabricated with high diffraction efficiency, which corresponds to a spectral scan range up to 40.3°. Based on the structure, a solid-state coherent LiDAR system is built. Three-dimensional imaging with mm-level range resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:The ability to capture the spatial dimensions of the world around us is growing in importance, with the widespread adoption of 3D-sensing used today for secure facial authentication, AR occlusion, robotic vision and SLAM, autonomous driving, and 3D-reconstruction. Most state-of-the-art light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems mainly focus on the sensor design [1]–[4]. However, the optical-electrical system of LiDAR is complex, requiring hardware and software co-optimization across the entire signal chain: high-power sub-1ns pulsed laser drivers, high-efficiency lasers, class-1 laser eye-safety, optical lens for focusing or diffusion, high-SNR single-photon detection receiver arrays, and machine learning (ML) based computational photography.

Abstract:The beam-steering device is a critical component in LiDAR systems for 3D imaging. Solid-state beam-steering devices attract the most attention for their advantages of robustness, fast beam-steering speed, and stability. However, solid-state beam-steering devices, such as optical phased arrays (OPAs), are challenging to realize 2D scanning ability. Here we employed a virtually imaged phased array (VIPA) in the LiDAR system to realize all solid-state two-dimensional (2D) beam-steering based on dispersion only. A frequency swept laser source is used for performing optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging and 2D beam steering simultaneously. The 2D disperser is compact and can be easily implemented owing to its simple structure. The mechanism of continuous scanning and ranging is beneficial for obtaining high lateral resolution, and a lateral resolution of 0.06° is achieved. 3D maps of the object at a distance of 2 m are obtained with cm-level ranging precision. The frame rate of the proposed LiDAR system only depends on the wavelength-tuning speed of the swept laser source, with the potential to realize ultrafast solid-state LiDAR systems.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques are facilitating the autonomous vehicles to build intelligent system. Optical phased arrays (OPAs) featured by all solid-state configurations are becoming a promising solution for 3D imaging. However, majority of state-of-art OPAs commonly suffer from severe power degradation at the edge of field of view (FoV), resulting in limited effective FoV and deteriorating 3D imaging quality. Here, we synergize chained grating antenna and vernier concept to design a novel OPA for realizing a record wide 160°-FoV 3D imaging. By virtue of the chained antenna, the OPA exhibits less than 3-dB beam power variation within the 160° FoV. In addition, two OPAs with different pitch are integrated monolithically to form a quasi-coaxial Vernier OPA transceiver. With the aid of flat beam power profile provided by the chained antennas, the OPA exhibits uniform beam quality at an arbitrary steering angle. The superior beam steering performance enables the OPA to accomplish 160° wide-FoV 3D imaging based on the frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR scheme. The ranging accuracy is 5.5-mm. Moreover, the OPA is also applied to velocity measurement for 4D sensing. To our best knowledge, it is the first experimental implementation of a Vernier OPA LiDAR on 3D imaging to achieve a remarkable FoV.

Abstract:The rising demand for high scanning accuracy and resolution in sensors for self-driving vehicles has led to the rapid development of parallelization in light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technologies. However, for the two major existing LiDAR categories—time-of-flight and frequency-modulated continuous wave—the light sources and measurement principles currently used for parallel detection face severe limitations from time- and frequency-domain congestion, leading to degraded measurement performance and increased system complexity. In this work we introduce a light source—the chaotic microcomb—to overcome this problem. This physical entropy light source exhibits naturally orthogonalized light channels that are immune to any congestion problem. Based on this microcomb state, we demonstrate a new type of LiDAR—parallel chaotic LiDAR—that is interference-free and has a greatly simplified system architecture. Our approach also enables the state-of-the-art ranging performance among parallel LiDARs: millimetre-level ranging accuracy and millimetre-per-second-level velocity resolution. Combining all of these desirable properties, this technology has the potential to reshape the entire LiDAR ecosystem.

Abstract:The next generation of lidar systems needs to adapt to variable environments with broadened bandwidth for increased resolution. Due to their digital components, conventional lidar systems, especially imaging lidar systems, suffer from limited detector bandwidth and sampling frequency. However, photonics devices can provide a reliable technical solution with high precision and ultra-broad bandwidth. This paper presents a photonic signal processing structure for a phase-coded lidar system. Two acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) are adopted in the proposed architecture. One is used for phase-coded laser signal modulation, and the other is used for demodulation. The echo laser signal is directed to the AOM performing demodulation before the sampling of the detector, accomplishing the multiplication of the echo laser signal and the electric reference signal. The detector is controlled to accumulate the demodulated laser signal. The AOM and detector transfer the correlation calculation from electrical signals processing to photonic signals processing. This photonics-based structure greatly decreases the sampling frequency of the detector without extending the width of the laser pulses, which achieves high resolution with low sampling speed. Photonic signal processing has the promising potential of simultaneously processing signals of multiple pixels. It is going to be an effective solution for imaging lidar systems to increase resolution with available low-cost devices.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) serves as one of the key components in the fields of autonomous driving, surveying mapping, and environment detection. Conventionally, dense points clouds are pursued by LiDAR systems to provide high-definition 3D images. However, the LiDAR is typically used to produce abundant yet redundant data for scanning the homogeneous background of scenes, resulting in power waste and excessive processing time. Hence, it is highly desirable for a LiDAR system to “gaze” at the target of interest by dense scanning and rough sparse scans on the uninteresting areas. Here, we propose a LiDAR structure based on an optical phased array (OPA) with reconfigurable apertures to achieve such a gaze scanning function. By virtue of the cascaded optical switch integrated on the OPA chip, a 64-, 128-, 192-, or 256-channel antenna can be selected discretionarily to construct an aperture with variable size. The corresponding divergence angles for the far-field beam are 0.32°, 0.15°, 0.10°, and 0.08°, respectively. The reconfigurable-aperture OPA enables the LiDAR system to perform rough scans via the large beam spots prior to fine scans of the target by using the tiny beam spots. In this way, the OPA-based LiDAR can perform the “gaze” function and achieve full-range scanning efficiently. The scanning time and power consumption can be reduced by 1/4 while precise details of the target are maintained. Finally, we embed the OPA into a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) system to demonstrate the “gaze” function in beam scanning. Experiment results show that the number of precise scanning points can be reduced by 2/3 yet can obtain the reasonable outline of the target. The reconfigurable-aperture OPA (RA-OPA) can be a promising candidate for the applications of rapid recognition, like car navigation and robot vision.

Abstract:High-speed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) is of great significance for road sign detection in the vehicle travel process, and ultimately for futuristic automatic driving. The current vehicle -borne LiDAR techniques, such as optical phased array radar and solid-state LiDAR, are challenging in assisting fully automated driving, due to its limitation of slow responsibility. Here, we propose a high-speed road sign detection system based on ultrafast single -pixel scanning LiDAR. A serial time -encoded imaging module is used for detecting and processing the road sign information. The continuous scanning -based imaging permits a temporal response of ns-level and a point rate of 370 M p/s. A position index algorithm is employed to rectify the distortions for improving the reconstructed image quality. Experimentally, we obtain a 2D image of the object with an angular resolution of 0.032 degrees, which can be optimized to 0.0057 degrees after process simulation and parameter optimization. Experimental ranging measurement for multiple distances are performed based on time -of -flight, and a ranging error of 4 mm is obtained. Besides, we demonstrate the ability to recognize real road sign. This scheme may provide a potential scheme for the traffic environment perception of the future autonomous vehicle.

Abstract:A time-multiplexing technique is proposed and demonstrated for single-photon imaging lidar, utilizing a large-area single-pixel single-photon detector to simultaneously detect the multi-pixel echoes. In this time-division multiplexing lidar, the echo signals from different pixels of the fiber array are delayed through fibers of varying lengths, merged into a fiber bundle, and then sequentially detected by the large-area single-pixel detector. In the experimental demonstration, a two-detector system capable of imaging 122 pixels using single-photon imaging lidar was showcased in three-dimensional imaging. Furthermore, the spectral broadening caused by multimode fiber dispersion was analyzed. Imaging of four different targets at a distance of 80 m was experimentally validated. This time-multiplexing technique can greatly reduce the number of single-photon detectors required in imaging lidar systems, making it suitable for low-cost lidar applications.

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as a strong candidate technology for active imaging applications. In particular, the single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution permits high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging capability through atmospheric obscurants including fog, haze and smoke. Here we demonstrate an array-based single-photon LiDAR system, which is capable of performing 3D imaging in atmospheric obscurant over long ranges. By adopting the optical optimization of system and the photon-efficient imaging algorithm, we acquire depth and intensity images through dense fog equivalent to 2.74 attenuation lengths at distances of 13.4 km and 20.0 km. Furthermore, we demonstrate real-time 3D imaging for moving targets at 20 frames per second in mist weather conditions over 10.5 km. The results indicate great potential for practical applications of vehicle navigation and target recognition in challenging weather.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate parallel LiDAR using random intensity fluctuations from a highly multimode laser. We optimize a degenerate cavity to have many spatial modes lasing simultaneously with different frequencies. Their spatio-temporal beating creates ultrafast random intensity fluctuations, which are spatially demultiplexed to generate hundreds of uncorrelated time traces for parallel ranging. The bandwidth of each channel exceeds 10 GHz, leading to a ranging resolution better than 1 cm. Our parallel random LiDAR is robust to cross-channel interference, and will facilitate high-speed 3D sensing and imaging.
