Abstract:A refractive index sensor based on tapered four-core fiber is proposed in this paper.With the aid of a hydrogen-oxygen flame,the four-core fiber was progressively tapered between two segments of a multimode fiber.By simulating the light field of the sensing part,we prove that the tapered four-core fiber will produce stronger interference effect.Experimental results show that the sensor has a maximum refractive index sensitivity of 298.307 nm/RIU and a linearity of 99.806%.The sensor is also insensitive to temperature,which effectively avoids the cross-sensitivity effect between temperature and refractive index.With its small size and high sensitivity,the sensor is expected to have potential applications in biological and chemical sensing.

Abstract:A novel refractive index (RI) sensor based on middle-tapered multicore fiber (TMCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensing structure consists of two singlemode fibers (SMF) and simply spliced a section tapered four-core fiber between them. The light injected from the SMF into the multicore fiber (MCF) will excite multiple cladding mode, and interference between these modes can be affected by the surrounding refractive index (SRI), which also dictates the wavelength shift of the transmission spectrum. Our experimental investigations achieved a sensitivity around 171.2 nm/RIU for a refractive index range from 1.3448 to 1.3774. All sensors fabricated in this paper show good linearity in terms of the spectral wavelength shift versus changes in RI. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A high sensitivity liquid refractive index (RI) sensor based on a single mode fiber-multimode fiber-tapered thin-core fiber-single mode fiber (SMTTS) structure is simulated by the beam propagation method (BPM). The modal interference between core and cladding mode happened because of modal mismatch and the transmission spectrum is calculated by BPM. The approximate linear relationship between liquid RI and spectrum dip wavelength shifts is obtained to demodulate RI value. To make a comparison, transmissions of single mode fiber-thin-core fiber-single mode fiber (STS) as well as single mode fiber-multimode fiber-thin-core fiber-single mode fiber (SMTS) are also calculated. It is significantly shown that the interference is improved by the segment of multimode fiber (M_MF). And the tapered thin-core fiber (TCF) has the functions that not only further can enhance the fringe visibility, but also can increase the RI sensitivity, which is higher with the thinner thin-core taper diameter. When the taper diameter is 53.51m, the average RI sensitivity could reach up to -116.7nm/RIU within the RI range of 1.33 to 1.39. This is much higher than the value of SMTS structure. And in the practice application, it could be a slimmer taper in the SMTTS structure to improve the sensitivity just achieving by a simple fabrication process. All process could be finished using fusion splicer, cutter and hydrogen flame.

Abstract:A sensitivity-enhanced fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a tapered single-mode thin-core diameter fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor head is formed by splicing a section of tapered thin-core diameter fiber (TCF) between two sections of single-mode fibers (SMFs). The cladding modes are excited at the first SMF-TCF interface, and then interfere with the core mode at the second interface, thus forming an inter-modal interferometer (IMI). An abrupt taper (tens of micrometers long) made by the electric-arc-heating method is utilized, and plays an important role in improving sensing sensitivity. The whole manufacture process only involves fiber splicing and tapering, and all the fabrication process can be achieved by a commercial fiber fusion splicer. Using glycerol and water mixture solution as an example, the experimental results show that the refractive index sensitivity is measured to be 0.591 nm for 1% change of surrounding RI. The proposed sensor structure features simple structure, low cost, easy fabrication, and high sensitivity.

Abstract:Using oxy-hydrogen flame to taper 62 .5/125 μm multimode fiber ,a tapered fiber with 30 mm taper length and 3 .553 2μm waist diameter is obtained .Based on the tapered multimode fiber ,a single mode-tapered multimode-single mode (STMS) fi-ber refractive index (RI) sensor structure is made ,which has strong evanescent field and high sensitivity to the outside refractive index .In the liquid refractive index sensing experiment ,the tapered multimode fiber is maintained straight and hung in the air at room temperature 25℃ .The RI liquids are placed around the taper using a dropper .Experimental results show that this refractive index sensor structure offers RI sensitivity as 1 009 .9 nm/RIU within the RI range of 1 .341 4 to 1 .358 6 .The change of liquid refractive index can be accurately monitored by the proposed sensor .

Abstract:A high sensitivity refractive index (RI) sensor based on a tapered small core single-mode fiber (SCSMF) structure sandwiched between two traditional single-mode fibers (SMF28) is reported. The microheater brushing technique was employed to fabricate the tapered fiber structures with different waist diameters of 12.5, 15.0, and 18.8 μm. Experiments demonstrate that the fiber sensor with a waist diameter of 12.5 μm offers the best sensitivity of 19212.5 nm/RIU (RI unit) in the RI range of 1.4304 to 1.4320. All sensors fabricated in this Letter show good linearity in terms of the spectral wavelength shift versus changes in RI. Furthermore, the sensor with the best sensitivity to RI was also used to measure relative humidity (RH) without any coating materials applied to the fiber surface. Experimental results show that the spectral wavelength shift changes exponentially as the RH varies from 60% to 95%. A maximum sensitivity of 18.3 nm per relative humidity unit (RHU) was achieved in the RH range of 90.4% to 94.5% RH.

Abstract:In this paper, a sensitive-enhanced single-mode fibertapered hollow core fibersingle-mode fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer is demonstrated for refractive index sensing. The sensitivity was improved by forming an up-taper at the two splicing joints and concave cone in hollow core fiber. The up-tapered regions served as a more effective mode splitter/combiner, and the tapered hollow core fiber was used to generate a stronger evanescent field to enhance the interaction of light with the analyte. According to the principles of interference between the cladding and fundamental modes, we performed refractive index measurements. The experiments indicated that the proposed sensor has a high refractive index sensitivity of 214.97nm/RIU in the refractive index range of 1.333-1.379, with a minimum refractive index measurement resolution of 9.3x10(-5). In addition, the sensor had a low temperature response of 2.96pm/degrees C in the range from 50 to 85 degrees C and a low cross sensitivity of 1.377x10(-5) RIU/degrees C. The proposed sensor is attractive for its high refractive index sensitivity, easy fabrication, low cross sensitivity, and good mechanical strength, making it of potential value for refractive index measurements for chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:A modal interferometer is demonstrated by tapering a single-modemultimode-single-mode(SMS) fiber structure heated by hydrogen flame.An interference fringe with the free spectral range(FSR) of 1.3 nm and extinction ratio of ～10dB is experimentally observed when the tapering length is 35mm.There exists stronger evanescent field in the SMS fiber structure when the waist diameter of the tapered multimode fiber is as thin as ～3.85μm.The refractive index sensitivity is up to 771nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.35～1.36.The sensor can accurately monitor the diffusion phenomenon of liquid solute.

Abstract:We proposed a highly sensitive refractive index sensor based on the long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) inscribed in the tapered fiber at dispersion turning point (DTP). The sensitivity of the refractive index sensor can reach 19473.3 nm/RIU. By reducing the fiber diameter, the evanescent field of the tapered fiber is enhanced, and the LPFG is inscribed at the DTP to improve the refractive index sensitivity of the grating. The proposed sensor has excellent refractive index sensitivity and has potential applications in water quality analysis, concentration measurement, food safety and industrial production.

Abstract:We reported a refractive index (RI) optical fiber sensor using series tapered thin-core microfiber (TTCMF) based on the optical Vernier effect. In the RI measurement range from 1.3313 to 1.3392, an ultra-high RI sensitivity of - 15,053.411 nm/RIU was obtained by using the series structure, which was about 4.65 times higher than that of the single TTCMF one. Based on the advantages of high RI sensitivity and simple structure, the proposed sensors have great potential in the biosensing fields.

Abstract:An all-fibre refractive index sensor with a simple periodical tapers configuration is proposed and investigated experimentally. The proposed fibre refractive index sensor consists of a small core singlemode fibre with tapers periodically fabricated along the fibre using a focused CO2 laser beam, and sandwiched between two standard singlemode fibres. Such a structure can be used for sensing of refractive index by measuring the dip wavelength shift of the multimode interference within the small core fibre cladding. A minimum sensitivity of 125 nm/RIU is measured for a refractive index of 1.33 and a maximum sensitivity of 383 nm/RIU for a refractive index of 1.38. The proposed refractive index sensor benefits from simplicity and low-cost and achieves a competitive sensitivity compared with other fibre-optic sensors.

Abstract:The spectral characteristics and sensitivities of a tapered two-mode fiber sandwiched between two single-mode fibers are systematically investigated. Theoretical calculations reveal that a dispersion turning point (DTP) appears when the group effective refractive index (RI) difference between the fundamental mode and the higher-order mode equals zero; as a result, ultrahigh RI sensitivities can be achieved. Furthermore, the location of the DTP is strongly dependent on the tapering condition. Then, we experimentally demonstrate high sensitivities of the RI sensor with the waist diameter of similar to 4 mu m by means of immersing it in a flow cell filled with glycerol solution. In further tracking of the resonant wavelength shift around the DTP, it is found that the proposed RI sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 1.81 x 10(4) nm/RIU and a limit of detection down up to 3.29 x 10(-5) RIU in a liquid glycerol solution.

Abstract:A novel tapered two-mode fiber embedded long-period fiber grating (TTMF-LPFG) sensor is proposed. The long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is fabricated by periodically splicing the two-mode fiber (TMF) and single-mode fiber (SMF), and then the LPFG is tapered to make a refractive index (RI) sensor. By comparing the sensors with different waist diameters, we found that the smaller the diameter of the sensor is, the higher the sensitivity is. When the taper waist diameter is 36 , the maximum sensitivity reaches 1360.43 nm/RIU. TTMF-LPFG shows low sensitivity to the temperature, avoiding the influence of temperature. For the traditional taper fiber, a very thin taper waist is required to excite strong evanescent field (EF) in order to obtain a large RI sensitivity. This situation creates a sensor fragile. For our structure, through the taper, LPFG can be formed and the sensitivity can be improved at the same time. The sensor has great potential in chemical composition analysis and biomedical applications.

Abstract:We have proposed a novel tapered-single mode-no core-single mode (TSNS) fiber refractometer based on multimode interference. The TSNS structure exhibits a high contrast ratio (＞15 dB) and a uniform interference fringe. The influence of different lengths and diameters of the TSNS on the refractive index unit (RIU) sensitivity was investigated. The experimental investigations indicated a maximum sensitivity of 1517.28 nm/RIU for a refractive index of 1.417 and low-temperature sensitivity (＜10 pm/ºC). The experimental and simulation results are also in good agreement.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity optical fiber sensor for low refractive index (RI) measurement is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is fabricated by fused splicing a section of multimode fiber (MMF) between two single-mode fibers (SMFs) with a slight offset at two splicing joints, then the MMF is tapered using fused tapering technology. The offset splicing between SMF and MMF can effectively excite more high-order modes. The tapered multimode fiber (TMMF) can enhance the strength of the evanescent field and promote the interplay between the high-order modes and the surrounding medium. The experimental results indicate that the offset value and the waist diameter of the TMMF are two determinants for RI sensitivity enhancement. The RI sensitivity up to 12145 nm/RIU is achieved over the low RI range of 1.3345-1.339. This proposed high-sensitivity fiber-optic RI sensor may provide a low-cost and effective approach for low RI measurement in many chemical and biological applications.

Abstract:We report a highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on three cascaded single-mode fiber tapers, in which a weak taper is sandwiched between the two tapers to improve the sensitivity of the sensor. Experimental results show that the sensitivity of the device is 0.286 nm for a 0.01 RI change, which is about four times higher than that of the normal two-cascaded-taper-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In addition, the sensitivity of the device could be enhanced by tapering a longer and thinner middle weak taper. Such kinds of low-cost and highly sensitive fiber-optic RI sensors would find applications in chemical or biochemical sensing fields.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an enhanced evanescent field fiber refractometer based on a tapered multimode fiber sandwiched between two single-mode fibers. Experiments show that this fiber sensor offers ultra-high sensitivity [better than 1900 nm/RIU at a refractive index (RI) of 1.44] for RI measurements within the range of 1.33-1.44, in agreement with the theoretical predictions. Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present a high‐sensitivity refractive‐index sensor based on etched thin‐core fiber (TCF) modal interferometer. The sensor structure is formed by splicing a TCF between two single‐mode fibers. To enhance the sensitivity, the thickness of the cladding of sensing region is reduced by hydrofluoric etching. The sensors with different diameters are investigated, and the maximum sensitivity of this new structure is 512nm/R.I.U with fiber diameters of 60 um, which is 4 times higher than that of the basic structure without etching. Abstract:The paper proposed and studied a Mach-Zehnder mode interferometric refractive index sensor, which is based on splicing points tapered SMF-PCF-SMF (SMF, single-mode fiber; PCF, photonic crystal fiber) structure. For the reason that the effective refractive index of photonic crystal fiber cladding high-order modes near fiber core are more sensitive to surrounding refractive index changes, the refractive index measurement sensitivity of splicing points tapered SMF-PCF-SMF Mach-Zehnder mode interferometer can be enhanced further through tapering the splicing points. Relations between refractive index measurement sensitivity and photonic crystal fiber length and taper waist diameter are studied through numerical simulations and experiments. Simulation and experimental results show that sensitivity will be increased with the increase of photonic crystal fiber length and the decrease of taper waist diameter. In the refractive range of 1.3333-1.3737, splicing points tapered SMF-PCF-SMF Mach-Zehnder mode interferometer with PCF length of 4 cm and taper waist diameter of 60.4 mu m has refractive index measurement sensitivity of 260.8 nm/RIU, compared with sensitivity of 224.2 nm/RIU of direct splicing SMF-PCF-SMF Mach-Zehnder mode interferometer with PCF length of 4 cm, the sensitivity increased by 16.3%.
