Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) with excellent charge extraction and transport ability plays a crucial role in high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we propose a approach to modify SnO2 ETL by introducing perovskite oxide BiFeO3 nanoparticles into SnO2 film to construct SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure. The formation of SnO2-BiFeO3 nano-heterostructure within the SnO2 ETL introduces an additional built-in potential directed from SnO2 to BiFeO3, which provides an additional driven force for the charge carriers transfer. As a result, the extraction rate of electrons from the perovskite layer to the SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs is significantly improved. In addition, an excellent ETL/perovskite interface with more favorable band alignment and fewer defects is achieved via the incorporation of BiFeO3 nanoparticles. By employing SnO2-BiFeO3 ETLs in CsPbI3 PSCs, we obtained PSC with a higher PCE of 17.35%, compared to 14.93% for the reference one. This result not only validates the effectiveness of BiFeO3 in improving the performance of SnO2-based PSCs but also highlights its potential application for other perovskite devices.

Abstract:Interface modification has emerged as a highly effective strategy for achieving the synergistic optimization of surface defects of SnO2, film quality of perovskite, and their interfacial energy level matching, thereby contributing to the photovoltaic performance and long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we introduced SbCl3 into the SnO2/MAPbI(3) interface. This approach capitalizes on the difference in electronegativity and the similarity in ionic radii between Sn and Sb, inducing an interaction between Sn and O atoms on the SnO2 surface with Sb from SbCl3. The interaction results in an excellent SnO2/MAPbI(3) interface with fewer defects and better energy level alignment. Moreover, high-quality perovskite films with fewer bulk defects were achieved due to the beneficial effects of Cl- anions that passivate uncoordinated Pb2+ defects and promote MAPbI(3) crystallization. As a result, MAPbI(3) PSCs with SbCl3 modification prepared in a full open-air environment demonstrated a PCE of 20.69% along with enhanced stability. This research highlights the substantial potential of incorporating SbCl3 into the SnO2/perovskite interface as a promising approach for enhancing both the efficiency and stability of planar PSCs.

Abstract:Lanthanide element Sm with a unique electronic structure has been introduced into SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL), passivating oxygen vacancy defects, optimizing energetic alignment, and promoting perovskite crystallization. The synergistic optimization effect of Sm doping has been demonstrated, leading to perovskite crystallization and enhanced interfacial charge transport. This study pioneers Sm3+ doping in SnO2 ETL, achieving 24.10% perovskite solar cells efficiency. Tin oxide (SnO2) has demonstrated significant potential as an electron transport layer (ETL) owing to its low‐temperature processing in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the poor energy‐level alignment and the presence of interface defects between the SnO2 and perovskite layer aggravate the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PSCs. Herein, heterovalent samarium cation (Sm3+) is deliberately doped into SnO2, optimizing the energy‐level alignment between SnO2 and the perovskite layer, and effectively passivating the oxygen vacancy defects on the surface of SnO2. Experimental and theoretical conclusions reveal that Sm‐doping successfully passivates the defects in the ETL and improves the perovskite crystal quality, thereby reducing interface charge recombination, and enhancing electron extraction from perovskite to the SnO2 layer. Consequently, the optimized Sm‐doped SnO2‐based PSCs achieve a PCE of 24.10% with a VOC of 1.174 V, negligible hysteresis, and improved durability under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Tuning the electrical conductivity of two-dimensional (2D) MXenes by modifying the termination groups and controlled oxidation offers great potential for photovoltaic applications. Here, in-situ-oxidized Ti3C2Tx (O–Ti3C2Tx) MXene was introduced to form a nanoscale heterojunction with SnO2 that was applied as an electron transport layer (ETL) in a MAPbI3 perovskite solar cell (PSC). Taking advantage of the transition from metallicity to semiconductivity during the oxidation process of Ti3C2Tx, the properties of Ti3C2Tx could be tuned to have its energy levels well matched with the perovskite. Besides, the insertion of O–Ti3C2Tx improved the electron mobility of the SnO2 ETL. Abstract:The power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability ofn-i-p perovskitesolar cells (PSCs) are significantly affected by inherent defectsof SnO2 and perovskite layers. In this work, we incorporate2-bromo-3-thiophenic acid (BrThCOOH) as a multifunctional passivantto simultaneously passivate the defects of SnO2 surfaceand perovskite layer. BrThCOOH permeates evenly into the MAPbI(3) and coordinates with Pb2+ and iodine vacancies(V-I (+)) to reduce surface defect density and inhibitthe decomposition of MAPbI(3). Carboxylic acid effectivelypassives the oxygen vacancy on the surface of SnO2 throughcoordination bonds, reducing the probability of electron capture bySnO(2) surface defects, thus contributing to electron transportin device. The interaction of BrThCOOH with MAPbI(3) andSnO(2) surfaces leads to an upward shift in energy levels,reducing energy loss during charge migration. The optimal MAPbI(3) device with BrThCOOH-modified SnO2 (T-SnO2) reveals an improved PCE of 21.12%, much higher than thatof the control one (19.12%). The hydrophobicity of BrThCOOH-modifiedMAPbI(3) is also improved, which is beneficial to the durabilityof the device. After 100 h of storage in the environment, the generatedPSCs maintain their initial PCE of 75%, demonstrating excellent long-termstability without any encapsulation.

Abstract:Recently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has been developed to exceed 25%, and charge transport layer optimization is a promising strategy for further efficiency improvement in PSCs. Herein, a supramolecular complex [(C8H17)4N]4[SiW12O40] (TASiW‐12) is synthesized and its doped form in SnO2 (hereafter S‐SnO2) is used as a charge transport layer (electron transport layer, ETL). This study demonstrates that S‐SnO2 introduction is a practical and effective way to improve the bulk ETL and those of the ETL/perovskite interface. S‐SnO2 leads to improved band alignment, suppressed trap‐assisted charge recombination, and enhanced electron mobility. In addition, an enhanced open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.16 V and an efficiency of 22.8% are successfully achieved in n–i–p planar PSCs. Meanwhile, S‐SnO2 acts as a crucial agent to reduce charge accumulation at the S‐SnO2/perovskite interface. The device possesses superior stability for 3072 h with only a 5.65% loss of the initial PCE. These results indicate that high‐efficiency PSCs can be easily attained by introducing a TASiW‐12‐doped ETL with integrated functions.

Abstract:Charge accumulation and charged defects at both bulk and buried heterojunction interfaces of perovskites are primarily related to the photovoltaic performance and shelf stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Moreover, detrimental defects distributing along the perovskite bottom side in contact with the tin oxide (SnO2) surface may exert unparalleled significance in charge extraction and transport. Most importantly, interfacial nonradiative recombination can also widely exist, which will seriously hamper efficiency of the related device. In this work, a multifunctional chemical bridge at the perovskite/SnO2 interface is devised through triggering an in situ polymerization strategy, by which cross-linked polymerizable 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MAPS) monomers under the combination of temperature and initiators can form bulkier macropolymers (MAPS dimers). Detailed theoretical and experimental results reveal that the carbonyl groups (CO) of both MAPS monomers and MAPS dimers can chemically anchor to perovskite bottom side through a CO···Pb coordination bond interaction to regulate the film quality and the siloxane groups effectively couple with oxygen vacancies on the SnO2 film surface to facilitate its optoelectronic properties. Compared with the primitive MAPS monomer units, the resultant MAPS dimers simultaneously prevent interfacial charge accumulation and demonstrate a more benign energy level alignment to further augment photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Thus, the devices assembled under open-air conditions based on double-sided passivation deliver a decent photoelectronic performance with the champion efficiency of 20.94% accompanied by negligible hysteresis. Meanwhile, the unencapsulated targeted devices maintain 93.1% and 86.5% of their original efficiency after continuous 500 h thermal treatment and 500 h light illumination under open-circuit conditions, respectively.

Abstract:The SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL) serves a critical role in perovskite solar cells. However, the oxygen vacancy defects and excess hydroxyl (–OH) groups in SnO2 always lead to degradation of device performance. Herein, we introduce iminodiacetic acid (IDA) to modify the SnO2 ETL, yielding three key advantages: (1) IDA can neutralize excess –OH groups and passivate the defects in SnO2, diminishing the decomposition of perovskite layer; (2) the IDA-modified SnO2 exhibits superior electron conductivity and film quality, while providing improved energy level alignment with the perovskite layer; and (3) the IDA-modified SnO2 owns superior surface wetting properties that facilitates a more effective perovskite crystallization. Ultimately, the devices based on IDA-modified SnO2 obtain a champion efficiency of 24.02% and enhanced stability.

Abstract:The performance improvement of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is strongly limited by the defects generated at the carrier transport layers/perovskite interface. Due to the complexity of intrinsic defects occurring in both SnO2 and perovskite layers, the introduction of appropriate multifunctional passivating molecules or groups is of great interest to suppress the defects at the interface of SnO2/perovskite. In this work, a facile way to simultaneously passivate the defects at both the surface of SnO2 and the bottom surface of the perovskite layer has been proposed using an interlayer of 3-chlorothiophene-2-carboxylic acid (TCA-Cl). Carboxylic acid in TCA-Cl can form a chemical linker between SnO2 and perovskite via an esterification, leading to the reduction of surface hydroxyl group defects of SnO2. The S, −COO–, and −Cl can modulate the surface electronic states of SnO2 and strengthen the binding at the interface of SnO2/perovskite, and moreover, they passivate the iodine vacancies (V I +) and undercoordinated Pb2+ defects on the surface of perovskite films. Besides, the energy-level alignment is very well modulated by the strong binder of TCA-Cl, leading to the improved carrier extraction at the interface of SnO2/perovskite. As a result, the conversion efficiency of MAPbI3 PSCs achieves up to 21.07% (18.41% for the control), with decreased hysteresis and increased stability.

Abstract:Recently, SnO2 has been recognized as a promising electron transport layer (ETL) for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its outstanding optoelectronic properties and low-temperature fabricating process. However, the detrimental defects formed at the SnO2/perovskite interface and within bulk perovskite films cause severe non-radiative recombination, limiting the further improvement of power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Herein, we have demonstrated a facile surface treatment on SnO2 through KF modification to passivate defects at both regions simultaneously. F- ions reduce the detrimental hydroxyl group defects on the SnO2 surface effectively, resulting in improved crystallinity of perovskite films with a more favorable morphology. Meanwhile, a preferred energy level alignment between SnO2 and MAPbI(3) films is obtained, improving the carrier transport capability. Moreover, K+ ions can diffuse into the MAPbI(3) film, passivating the grain boundaries and intrinsic I- vacancy defects. Consequently, a significant increase in PCE from 18.47 to 20.33% is achieved for a MAPbI(3) PSC based on a SnO2/KF ETL, with negligible hysteresis and improved stability.

Abstract:An electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite interface with abundant defects and energy level mismatch can lead to severe nonradiative recombination and reduce the efficiency in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Thus, achieving an excellent ETL/perovskite interface is crucial for the development of high-efficiency PSCs. Herein, we present a method to enhance the interface between SnO2 and the perovskite using an inorganic phosphate compound with appropriate functional groups. By leveraging the multifunctional effects of Sn4+ and Pb2+ ions and PO bonds, as well as the formation of hydrogen bonds between the perovskite and phosphate, we successfully engineered an exceptional interface characterized by a reduced number of defect states and improved energy level alignment. The optimization of the SnO2/perovskite interface led to an impressive power conversion efficiency of 21.84% for methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI3) PSCs, with improved stability in the air environment. The findings of our work present an effective strategy for modifying the ETL/perovskite interface with suitable functional groups for high-performance and stable PSCs.

Abstract:In this work, the SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 hybrid electron transport layer (ETL) was prepared by incorporating two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 -MXene into SnO 2 and appropriate ultraviolet (UV) ozone treatment. The synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 introduction and UV ozone treatment on the charge transport capacity of SnO 2 ETL, interface properties of ETL/perovskite, perovskite morphology, and device performance was systematically investigated. The results show that the introduction of Ti 3 C 2 does not affect the morphology and transmittance of SnO 2 ETL. The perovskite films based on SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 are not only dense, but also have smaller surface roughness, more uniform, and larger grain size, even penetrating the entire perovskite film. The surface oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 induced by UV-ozone treatment enhanced the charge transport capacity of ETL. The electron extraction and charge transfer at the interface between SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 ETL and perovskite are higher, and carrier recombination is effectively suppressed. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on SnO 2 -Ti 3 C 2 ETL have larger charge recombination impedance and higher electron mobility, mainly due to enhanced ETL charge transport and optimization of interface properties. The short-circuit current ( J sc) and filling factor (FF) of PSCs are increased by 5% and 7% respectively, delivering a champion device with a relatively high FF of 79.38% and high power conversion efficiency of 19.52%, as well as good stability. Thus, this study provides a simple and effective method for the preparation of efficient and repeatable PSCs and paves the way for the industrialization of PSCs to a certain extent.

Abstract:SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely employed as electron transport layers (ETLs) in planar n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The results demonstrate that the unique coordination complexes assembled between L-ch zwitterion and SnO2 NPs can inhibit the aggregation of SnO2 NPs, benefiting for the formation of more compact film with reduced roughness. Simultaneously, the L-ch zwitterion can adjust the electronic properties of SnO2 and promote the carrier transport between perovskite and SnO2 ETL with well aligned energy level. Moreover, the -COO- and –N+ (CH3)3 groups can passivate uncoordinated Pb2+ and MA vacancies defects in the perovskite film, respectively. Therefore, by using SnO2/L-ch as the ETL, the efficiency of champion MAPbI3 PSCs can be increased from 18.77% to 20.56%, with reduced hysteresis and improved stability.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on the SnO2 electron transport layer (ETL) have achieved remarkable photovoltaic efficiency. However, the commercial SnO2 ETLs show various shortcomings. The SnO2 precursor is prone to agglomeration, resulting in poor morphology with numerous interface defects. Additionally, the open circuit voltage (Voc ) would be constrained by the energy level mismatch between the SnO2 and the perovskite. And, few studies designed SnO2 -based ETLs to promote crystal growth of PbI2 , a crucial prerequisite for obtaining high-quality perovskite films via the two-step method. Herein, we proposed a novel bilayer SnO2 structure that combined the atomic layer deposition (ALD) and sol-gel solution to well address the aforementioned issues. Due to the unique conformal effect of ALD-SnO2 , it can effectively modulate the roughness of FTO substrate, enhance the quality of ETL, and induce the growth of PbI2 crystal phase to develop the crystallinity of perovskite layer. Furthermore, a created built-in field of the bilayer SnO2 can help to overcome the electron accumulation at the ETL/perovskite interface, leading to a higher Voc and fill factor. Consequently, the efficiency of PSCs with ionic liquid solvent increases from 22.09% to 23.86%, maintaining 85% initial efficiency in a 20% humidity N2 environment for 1300 h.

Abstract:The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can be improved by optimizing the perovskite film quality and electron transfer layers (ETLs). In this study, high-efficient PSCs with multi-cation hybrid electron transport layer (SnO2@Na:Cs ETL) were fabricated using continuous spin-coating. Compared to the pristine SnO2, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of device based on SnO2@Na:Cs ETL have reached 22.06% (with an open circuit voltage of 1.13 V), up approximately 21%. The photovoltaic performance of the device is enhanced due to the increase in the transmission rate, electrical conductivity, electron mobility and surface state owing to the multi-cation hybrid. In addition, because SnO2@Na:Cs ETL can significantly improve interface contact with the perovskite film and improve its crystallinity, the transport defect state and carrier transport efficiency are significantly improved at the ETL/Perovskite interface. Therefore, the open circuit voltage (Voc) and fill factor (FF) of PSCs was significantly increased. The application of SnO2@Na:Cs ETL provides a simple and efficient method to obtain highly-efficient PSCs.

Abstract:Here, the interfacial synergism of discontinuous spot shaped SnO 2 and TiO 2 mesoporous nanocomposite as electron transfer layer (ETL) underlayer is presented in highly efficient mesoscopic perovskite solar cells (M-PSCs). Based on this new strategy, strong charge recombination observed in previous SnO 2 -based ETLs is suppressed to a great extent as the pathways of charge recombination and energy loss are blocked effectively. Meanwhile, the internal series resistance of entire M-PSC is decreased remarkably. The new ETL is more kinetically favorable to electron transfer and thus results in significant photovoltaic improvement and alleviated hysteresis effect of M-PSCs.
Enhanced performance of planar perovskite solar cells by doping the SnO2 electron transport layer with guanidinium chloride

Abstract:Tin (IV) oxide is a highly promising electron transport layer (ETL) for lead halide perovskite solar cells due to its high conductivity, transparency, wide band gap, and the possibility of low-temperature processing. Nonetheless, charge carrier recombination processes at the SnO 2 /perovskite interface diminish the device performance. Here, we demonstrate that SnO 2 doping with guanidine hydrochloride (G-SnO 2 ) leads to efficient surface passivation and a larger band offset between the ETL and the perovskite layer, resulting in reduced voltage losses and faster electron transfer. Moreover, G-SnO 2 facilitates the growth of highly crystalline perovskite layers. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency of up to 23.48% and a high open-circuit voltage of 1.18 V are obtained in solar cells incorporating the G-SnO 2 ETL. These devices also exhibited negligible hysteresis and maintained more than 96% of their initial power conversion efficiency after 1,250 h exposure to the air without encapsulation.
