Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering
Abstract:Wear of cutting tools is one of the major issues in any rock excavation process. Different abrasiveness tests have been designed to mimic the interaction between rock and cutting tools and offer a quantitative measure for estimation of tool life. The abrasiveness tests usually accompany the measurements of material hardness and rock physical or mechanical properties to verify the correlation between the measured abrasiveness indices and various physical and mechanical properties. The correlation equations may also be used to estimate rock abrasiveness from more commonly measured rock properties or be used to assess geotechnical properties from relatively simple abrasiveness test results. This paper reviews the correlations between Cerchar and LCPC measurements and other rock properties. LCPC tests were performed on seven different rock types. Each rock type includes five groups that experienced different cycles of freezing–thawing (FT) process and were subject to LCPC tests. Conventional rock physical and mechanical tests were also performed on the samples, and thin sections were prepared to study the impact of FT cycles. Different correlations between LAC (LCPC abrasiveness coefficient) and LBC (LCPC breakability coefficient) and rock average hardness, physical, and mechanical properties (density, porosity, P-wave velocity, uniaxial compression strength, elastic modulus, and Brazilian tensile strength) were developed. Comparing the LAC and LBC correlations, the reliability of rock geotechnical properties to predict abrasiveness indices are discussed. The results showed that abrasiveness tests, as a measure to simulate tool life, cannot be reliably estimated from rock physico-mechanical properties and the resulting relationships have to be used with ample cautions for assessment of tool wear.
