Abstract:LNMO/LTO cells represent an excellent vehicle with which to test the impact of electrolyte additives on cell performance due to the high potential of LNMO which leads to electrolyte oxidation. Additives that prevent this oxidation are desired. Electrolyte additive researchers normally compare the capacity retention versus cycle number of cells with and without additives. If the capacity retention is improved, the additive is "good". In this paper, this logic is shown to be flawed. One additive, LiO-t-C4F9, which does improve capacity retention versus cycle number, is shown to do so by increasing electrolyte oxidation at the positive electrode. This causes increased charge end point capacity slippage and increased self discharge rates. As such, these additives, like many promoted in the literature, are not "good", but are "bad". On the other hand, one additive, Al(HFiP)(3), is shown to reduce parasitic reactions at the LNMO electrode but does not lead to improved capacity retention. A full understanding of the impact of the additive on the parasitic reaction rates at both positive and negative electrodes is required before a sound judgment about the impact of an additive can be made. Therefore, additive researchers must pay attention to coulombic efficiency, capacity end point slippage, reversible and irreversible capacity loss during storage as well as voltage drop during storage in addition to the long-time cycling performance for cells to get an overall evaluation of electrolyte additives. Synergistic Dual-Additive Regulated Carbonate Electrolyte Stabilizes Bidirectional Interface for Aggressive Ni-rich Li-metal Full Batteries

Abstract:The escalating energy demands underscore the importance of Ni-rich Li-metal batteries (LMBs); however, their aggressive bidirectional electrode-electrolyte interfacial issues hinder the practical implementation. Overcoming the limited solubility (similar to 800 ppm) of lithium nitrate (LiNO3) in commercially available carbonate electrolytes holds promise. Nevertheless, unintended effects caused by solubilizers raise emerging concerns. Herein, an additive solubilized additive strategy is introduced to synergistically stabilize the Ni-rich cathode and Li-metal anode (LMA) in carbonate electrolytes, where tris (2, 2, 2-trifluoroethyl) borate (TTFEB) as a solubilizer utilizes its electron-deficient B atom to snatch electron-rich NO3- anion of insoluble LiNO3 and thus forms a unique TTFEB-LiNO3 solvation structure in carbonate electrolytes. Valuably, the dual-additive electrolyte facilitates the formation of a robust LiF/Li3N-rich solid electrolyte interphase on LMA and a thin, uniform F, B, N-rich cathode electrolyte interphase on Ni-rich cathode, effectively suppressing the breeding of Li dendrites and mitigating the structure degradation of Ni-rich cathode. Consequently, the full cell, featuring a thin Li anode (50 mu m) and a high-loading NCM811 cathode (4.04 mAh cm(-2)) in the dual-additive electrolyte, demonstrates a notable capacity retention of 81.5 % after 140 cycles. This work reveals the intricated LiNO3-carbonate solvation chemistry, inspiring further advancements in electrolyte engineering for practical LMBs.
Single vs. Blended Electrolyte Additives: Impact of a Sulfur-Based Electrolyte Additive on Electrode Cross-talk and Electrochemical Performance of LiNiO2||Graphite Cells

Abstract:Lithium nickel oxide (LNO) is an attractive positive electrode active material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to its high reversible specific capacity and absence of cobalt. Nevertheless, it is prone to structural instabilities that lead to rapid capacity fading, safety concerns and shows in average a lower voltage than mixtures with cobalt, limiting its applicability to date. Herein we introduce the sulfur-based electrolyte additive, benzo[d][1,3,2]dioxathiole 2,2-dioxide (DTDPh), to stabilize the LNO electrode and study its effects on interphase compositions by means of complementary electrochemical and spectroscopic techniques. Obtained results demonstrate an improved galvanostatic cycling performance in terms of cycle life and achievable specific discharge capacity that significantly outperform the common film-forming additive vinylene carbonate (VC). The cycle life was increased from 102 to 147 cycles compared to the baseline electrolyte and the accumulated discharge energy until end of life was increased by 45%. This study furthermore provides strong evidence of a significant cross-talk and negative interplay between DTDPh and VC when both are present in the electrolyte formulation. Mechanistic consideration based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest the formation of mobile poly(VC) species, which is supported by the results of post mortem analysis of the resulting interphases.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage (EES) is still key to realize wide spread use of renewable energies. For large-scale EES production, the development of high energy density, non-toxic, cost-effective materials is necessary. In this study, a cobalt free active material, Lithium Nickel Manganese Oxide, LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO), was employed in the production of cathodes for high voltage lithium ion battery (LIB) applications. LNMO is an attractive cathode active material due to its high operating potential (~4.7 vs. Li/Li+ [1]), non-toxicity and low cost. The practical application of LNMO cathodes in LIBs has been relatively limited, especially for large scale application, due challenges associated with the material (i.e. electrolyte decomposition at high voltage, self-discharge and dissolution of the transition metals [2]). Electrolyte additives are an effective way to address these challenges, without major cost increase or changes to the production approach. In this study the role of different electrolyte additives in high-voltage full-cell LIBs with both graphite and silicon-graphite anodes is investigated. Additives known for their solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forming ability (i.e. vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC)), as well as additives that play additional roles such as cathode electrolyte interface formation or HF scavenging (i.e. tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite (TMSP) and succinate anhydride (SA)), are used [3]. Galvanostatic cycling measurements were performed in 3-electrode cells in order to investigate the rate capability and long term cycling stability of LMNO/Gr and LMNO/Gr-Si full-cells with different electrolyte additives. The electrochemical characterization was verified with post mortem analysis to confirm the SEI composition, chemical and mechanical stability of the electrodes and lack of lithium plating. Post mortem investigations were done with Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and optical microscopy. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs), paired with high-energy-density cathode materials, are promising to meet the ever-increasing demand for electric energy storage. Unfortunately, the inferior electrode-electrolyte interfaces and hydrogen fluoride (HF) corrosion in the state-of-art carbonate-based electrolytes lead to dendritic Li growth and unsatisfactory cyclability of LMBs. Herein, a multifunctional electrolyte additive triallylamine (TAA) is proposed to circumvent those issues. The TAA molecule exhibits strong nucleophilicity and contains three unsaturated carbon-carbon double bonds, the former for HF elimination, the later for in-situ passivation of aggressive electrodes. As evidenced theoretically and experimentally, the preferential oxidation and reduction of carbon-carbon double bonds enable the successful regulation of components and morphologies of electrode interfaces, as well as the binding affinity to HF effectively blocks HF corrosion. In particular, the TAA-derived electrode interfaces are packed with abundant lithium-containing inorganics and oligomers, which diminishes undesired parasitic reactions of electrolyte and detrimental degradation of electrode materials. When using the TAA-containing electrolyte, the cell configuration with Li anode and nickel-rich layered oxide cathode and symmetrical Li cell deliver remarkably enhanced electrochemical performance with regard to the additive-free cell. The TAA additive shows great potential in advancing the development of carbonate-based electrolytes in LMBs.

Abstract:The Ni-rich LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) material is considered one of the most potential cathode materials because of its high capacity, high voltage, and high lithium-ion (Li+) diffusion coefficient. However, the oxidation and decomposition of electrolytes at high potential lead to the failure of NMC811. Herein, lithium bis(oxalate) (LiBOB) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiODFB) electrolyte additives are introduced to inhibit side reactions on the surface of the material. Results reveal that B x O y can be introduced into the passive cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI) film by the oxidative decomposition of LiBOB and LiODFB additives, which not only develops the diffusion of Li+ but also helps suppress the dissolution of transition-metal (TM) ions. In addition, compared with LiBOB additives, the CEI film formed by LiODFB preferential decomposition is thin, uniform, and dense and contains more inorganic substances, which reduces the decomposition of the electrolyte, optimizes the composition of the CEI film, and reduces the resistance of Li+ transport. This finding is expected to be useful for the development of electrolyte additives with potential use for promoting the formation of good CEI film.

Abstract:Discovering new electrolyte additives for specific purposes has been a long-run demand for lithium batteries. With the help of the current understanding of failure mechanisms of lithium batteries, it is no longer impossible to have a rational design, instead of random trials, of electrolyte additives for lithium batteries. More excitingly, we have successfully discovered several new electrolyte additives based on chemistry knowledge. Standard characterization tools, such as NMR, MS, SEM, and XPS, are enough to verify the proposed design rules for these electrolyte additives. Phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5) is investigated as an acid scavenger to remove the acidic impurities in a commercial organic carbonate electrolyte for lithium batteries. We revealed that commercial electrolytes can be significantly improved for Li metal batteries via a simple modification with P2O5. The results indicate that adding P2O5 removes HF from the electrolyte and generates POxFy species which form a favorable SEI. The new electrolyte is also capable of eliminating transition metal leaching and particle cracking of a Li-ion cathode. Acrylonitrile (AN) is another effective additive in carbonate-based electrolytes. It is verified as a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) enabler resulting in a uniform and dense lithium (Li) deposition. Our electrochemical and spectroscopic study reveals that AN is cathodically electropolymerized on the Li surface prior to the electrochemical decomposition of the electrolyte during Li deposition. The resultant polyacrylonitrile artificial solid electrolyte interphase enables uniform nucleation and growth of Li deposition with significantly reduced side reactions. Several oxygen scavengers will also be introduced in this poster. Based on NMR and MS results, these oxygen scavengers undergo sacrificial oxidation during the cycling of lithium batteries. The resultant electrolytes improve long-term cycling and rate performance significantly.
Regulating the Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces of Lithium-High Nickel Batteries via a Multifunctional Additive

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries with high nickel ternary (LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2, x ≥ 0.8) as the cathode hold the promise to meet the demand of next-generation high energy density batteries. However, the unsatisfactory stability of electrode-electrolyte interfaces limits their practical applications. In this work, N-methyl-N-trimethylsilyltrifluoroacetamide (NMTFA) is suggested as a new functional electrolyte additive to stabilize the Li∥LiNi0.9Co0.05Mn0.05O2 chemistry by forming robust and effective electrode-electrolyte interphases, namely the anode-electrolyte interphase (AEI, or conventionally called SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI). The NMTFA-derived SEI/CEI greatly enhances the battery performance that a capacity retention of 82.1% after 200 cycles at 1C charge/discharge is achieved, significantly higher than that without NMTFA addition (52.5%). Moreover, the NMTFA also improves the thermal stability of the electrolyte and inhibits the hydrolysis of LiPF6. This work provides new clues for the optimization of electrolyte formulation for lithium-high nickel batteries through modulating interfaces.

Abstract:Current developments of electrolyte additives to stabilize electrode-electrolyte interface in lithium-ion batteries highly rely on a trial-and-error search, which involves repetitive testing and intensive amount of resources. The lack of understandings on the fundamental protection mechanisms of the additives significantly increases the difficulty for the transformational development of new additives. In this study, we investigated two types of individual protection routes to build a robust cathode-electrolyte interphase at high potentials: (i) a direct reduction in the catalytic decomposition of the electrolyte solvent; and (ii) formation of a "corrosion inhibitor film" that prevents severely attack and passivation from protons that generated from the solvent oxidation, even the decomposition of solvent cannot be mitigated. Effect of two exemplary electrolyte additives, lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) and 3-hexylthiophene (3HT), on LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC 622) cathode were investigated to validate our hypothesis. It is demonstrated that understandings of both electrolyte additives and solvent are essential and careful balance between the cathode protection mechanism of additives and their side effects is critical to obtain optimum results. More importantly, this study opens up new directions of rational design of functional electrolyte additives for the next-generation high-energy-density lithium-ion chemistries.

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered oxides (LLOs) are fascinating high-energy-density cathode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the high voltage causes severe decomposition of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes at LLOs' surfaces, often producing a non-uniform, unstable, and non-protective cathode–electrolyte interphase (CEI), hindering the Li+ diffusion and reducing the electrochemical efficiency. Various side reactions, such as the release of lattice oxygen, dissolution of transition metals (especially manganese), and irreversible structural transformations, also occur and severely attenuate the electrochemical performance. Electrolyte additives provide a facile and effective approach to optimize the battery performance by in situ regulating the physical/chemical structures/properties of CEI. This paper reviews the research progress in functional electrolyte additives for LLOs and discusses the mechanisms of CEI construction with diverse functions. Finally, we tentatively propose suggestions to construct CEI by screening and customizing electrolyte additives to promote the large-scale application of LLOs for LIBs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Enhanced Aluminium Passivation properties of lithium nonafluoro-tert-butoxide: Designing Electrolyte Additives for High-Voltage 4.8 V LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-graphite batteries

Abstract:LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) cathodes offer high energy density in Li-ion batteries due to their higher operational potential than conventional cathode materials. However, their practical application in Li-ion batteries is limited by the active metal (e.g., Mn) dissolution, which irreversibly compromises the graphite anode of a Li-ion battery. In this work, lithium nonafluoro-tert-butoxyborate (LiONFtb) has been tested as an additive in LNMO-graphite system. The electrochemical stability analysis of the LiONFtb salt on the aluminium current collector revealed a new passivation mechanism, without the formation of cracks and pits, which are otherwise commonly observed in the case of LiPF6-containing electrolytes. Adding 1 wt% LiONFtb to the commercial LiPF6-based electrolyte is demonstrated to improve the high voltage stability of the electrolyte in LNMO-Li half-cell. The LiONFtb additive was also found to promote better Li+ de-/intercalation behaviour in graphite-Li half-cell. The long-term cycling of the LNMO-graphite full cell with the 1% LiONFtb additive electrolyte demonstrated higher initial discharge capacity (121 mAh/g) and higher capacity retention (62%) than the LiPF6 containing electrolyte (105 mAh/g and 9.2%, respectively) after 100 cycles. The post-cycling analysis reveals that the LiONFtb additive helps to retain the morphology of the LNMO particles and reduces the Mn dissolution during cycling. The positive influence of the LiONFtb additive on reducing the cathode particle cracking and active metal dissolution makes it a viable electrolyte additive candidate for next-generation high-voltage Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Building stable electrolytes is one of the key technologies for sodium (Na)-metal batteries as the reactive nature and the dendritic growth of Na-metal anodes. Herein, a paradigmatic and rational strategy of cation additive was proposed to stabilize electrolytes for Na metal batteries. Three principles, including the electrode potential of introduced cations, the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level decrease of solvents after coordinating with cations, and the interaction strength between cations and solvents, were proved through first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. Li + was predicted to be a good cation additive candidate for Na metal batteries. Finite element method simulations, in situ optical microscopic observations, and electrochemical tests further validated the resisted Na dendritic growth due to the electrostatic shield effect and enhanced electrolyte stability after introducing Li + additives. The proven cation additive strategy affords emerging chances for rational electrolyte design for stable and safe Na metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium batteries composed of Li-metal anodes, ester-based electrolytes, and Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1–x–y]O2 (NCM) cathodes have emerged as potential candidates for next-generation energy storage technologies. However, identifying suitable electrolytes, which are highly compatible with NCM cathodes and simultaneously form stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers on Li-metal anode surfaces, is a significant challenge. Herein, we introduce a new electrolyte additive of P2S5-saturated CS2 (PSC) solution (1 wt.%) to modify the ester-based electrolyte, and then, an ionically conductive SEI can be generated to stabilize the Li-metal significantly. We discover that the P2S5 can be solvated by the CS2, in which the solution can facilitate the in situ formation of a stable SEI containing inorganic Li–P–S compounds (Li-ion conductors, likely Li3PS4), enabling the dendrite-free and highly reversible Li-metal anode. Then, a practical battery, configured by a Li-metal anode, PSC-modified electrolyte, and a Li[Ni0.73Co0.10Mn0.15Al0.02]O2 cathode, demonstrates high capacity, cycling stability, and Coulombic efficiency over 1500 cycles.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acsenergylett.1c00661?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsenergylett.1c00661</a>.Experimental methods. Abstract:As a promising cathode candidate in high energy density lithium-ion batteries, Nickel-rich cathode LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 (LNCAO) has received extensive attention for its high specific capacity and low cost, while it is subject to fast capacity fading due to the inferior interphasial stability. This work aims to improve the cyclic stability of LNCAO cathode by using a multifunctional electrolyte additive, p-toluenesulfonylmethyl isocyanide (TOSMIC). DFT calculation shows that the high reduction activity of TOSMIC additive is mainly contributed by its sulfone group, while the high oxidation activity is primarily caused by its phenyl group. The obtained experimental results indicate that TOSMIC simultaneously generates effective cathode electrolyte interphase and solid electrolyte interphase layer on LNCAO and graphite surface, respectively, leading to greatly enhanced cyclic stability of LNCAO cathode and increased rate performance of graphite anode. On the other hand, application of TOSMIC could suppress the hydrolyzation reaction of LiPF6, and therefore, hindering the generation of harmful product HF and dissolution of transition metal from LNCAO cathode during cycling. Application of such multifunctional electrolyte additive significantly improves the cycle life of the LNCAO/graphite full cell.

Abstract:The synergistic effects of LiB(C2O4)2 (LiBOB), LiF2B(C2O4) (LiDFOB), triphenylamine (Ph3N), and 1,4-benzodiozane-6,7-diol (BDOD) as functional electrolyte additives in high-energy electrochemical cells is examined. The influence of these additives, individually, and in different combinations, is evaluated using galvanostatic cycling of cells containing Li1.2Ni0.15Mn0.55Co0.1O2 (0.5Li2MnO3·0.5LiMn0.375Ni0.375Co0.25O2)-based positive electrodes, graphite-based negative electrodes, and a LiPF6-based electrolyte. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and voltage-hold tests are also used. By itself, LiBOB is a good additive for reducing cell capacity loss, but cell impedance rise is still significant after extended cycling. Similarly, neither Ph3N nor BDOD alone provide desired improvements in cell performance. However, cells containing LiBOB in combination with LiDFOB, Ph3N, or BDOD exhibit enhanced capacity retention, rate capability, and cyclability; probable reaction mechanisms are highlighted here. Combining electrolyte additives that act synergestically is a practical and versatile strategy to improve performance and life of lithium-ion cells.
