Abstract:LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 compound was successfully synthesized by the co-precipitation method. The effect of H2O on LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 in humid atmosphere was investigated by structural, magnetic and electrochemical analysis. The consequence is that immersion of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 to H2O and exposure of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 to humid atmosphere led to a rapid attack in the surface layer of the particles. This effect resulted in the chemical attack of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 but was restricted only to the surface layer of the particles (10 nm thickness). This aging process occurred during the first few minutes, then it saturated. About 8% of Li-ion was lost due to the delithiation at surface layer. After aging, an initial discharge capacity of 139 mAh/g was delivered at 1 C-rate in the cut-off voltage of 3.0-4.3 V. About 95% of its initial capacity was retained after 30 cycles.

Abstract:In this work, Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13NaxO2 was prepared via an ion-exchange process combined with a solid-state reaction. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) were all used to study the surface structure and chemical distribution of the resulting material. Nickel (Ni) was found to be enriched at the surface in regions perpendicular to the lithium diffusion channels (that is, the (200) surfaces) and also exhibited a tendency to diffuse into the lithium (Li) layers, generating a Fm3m rocksalt phase. In contrast, cobalt (Co) segregated along the transition metal (TM) layers of the (001) and (200) surfaces. The results of aging trials demonstrated that Co-enriched layers lead to surface structure instability, as evidenced by the formation of a large number of antisite defects (Li-TM) and rocksalt phase structures at the (001) surface during aging.
Effects of Aging in Electrolyte on the Structural and Electrochemical Properties of the Li[Li0.18ni0.15co0.15mn0.52]O-2 Cathode Material

Abstract:Li-excess Li[Li0.18Ni0.15Co0.15Mn0.52]O2 layered cathode material is prepared by the sol-gel method. The material is aged in a LiPF6 based electrolyte and then is subjected to a series of structural and electrochemical analyses. X-ray diffraction shows that aging in electrolyte does not change the C2/m ordering of the material crystal lattice. But the surface of the material is etched by the electrolyte which is confirmed by transmission electron microscope and Raman scattering. This causes dissolution of some transition metal elements (especially Ni and Co) and formation of a spinel-like surface layer. Also, some by-products resulted from the electrolyte decomposition are detected on the surface of the material. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that aging in electrolyte severely hinders the electrochemical kinetics of the material. Cyclic voltammetry indicates that the aged sample has large electrode polarization which prevents the oxygen loss process and the activation of Mn4+ ions. As a result, the discharge capacity of the aged sample continuously increases from 134 mAh g−1 to 215 mAh g−1 in the initial several cycles.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered oxides, in a general term of Li(NixCoyMn1-x-y)O2 (x > 0.5), are widely recognized as promising candidates for improving the specific energy and lowering the cost for next-generation Li-ion batteries. However, the high surface reactivity of these materials results in side reactions during improper storage and notable gas release when the cell is charged beyond 4.3 V vs Li+/Li0. Therefore, in this study, we embark on a comprehensive investigation on the moisture sensitivity of LiNi0.85Co0.1Mn0.05O2 by aging it in a controlled environment at a constant room-temperature relative humidity of 63% up to 1 year. We quantitatively analyze the gassing of the aged samples by online electrochemical mass spectrometry and further depict plausible reaction pathways, accounting for the origin of the gas release. Transmission electron microscopy reveals formation of an amorphous surface impurity layer of ca. 10 nm in thickness, as a result of continuous reactions with moisture and CO2 from the air. Underneath it, there is another reconstructed layer of ca. 20 nm in thickness, showing rock salt/spinel-like features. Our results provide insight into the complex interfacial degradation phenomena and future directions for the development of high-performance Ni-rich layered oxides.
Electrochemical performance and structural stability of layered Li–Ni–Co–Mn oxide cathode materials in different voltage ranges

Abstract:In this study, layered Li–Ni–Co–Mn oxide (LiNi1-x-yCoxMnyO2) cathode materials with different transition metal compositions (LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) are synthesized by a simple mixing process and solid-state reaction at a high temperature. The samples show a typical hexagonal α–NaFeO2 structure with a single phase and predominantly spherical morphology with a homogeneous particle size distribution. The electrochemical properties of the samples are investigated in different voltage ranges by galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The results reveal that the capacity increases with increasing the charging cutoff voltage by 0.1 V for all the samples. In addition, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 samples deliver initial discharge capacities of 161.0, 170.8, and 202.3 mAh g−1, respectively, at a 0.1 C rate with the voltage ranging from 3.0 to 4.3 V, which increase by 23.4%, 18.8%, and 8.2%, respectively, with the increase in the charging cutoff voltage from 4.3 to 4.6 V. Furthermore, compared with LiCoO2, the samples exhibit a relatively superior cycling performance with an increase of the charging cutoff voltage. Cyclic voltammetry tests reveal that the redox process at approximately 4.5–4.6 V corresponds to Co3+/Co4+, and that at approximately 3.6–3.8 V corresponds to Ni2+/Ni4+. X-ray diffraction measurements confirm the reversible phase transition and excellent structural stability of the LiNi1-x-yCoxMnyO2 materials against prolonged cycling.

Abstract:The intrinsic poor thermal stability of layered LiNixCoyMn1–x–yO2 (NCM) cathodes and the exothermic side reactions triggered by the associated oxygen release are the main safety threats for their large-scale implantation. In the NCM family, it is widely accepted that Ni is the stability troublemaker, while Mn has long been considered as a structure stabilizer, whereas the role of Co remains elusive. Here, via Co/Mn exchange in a Ni-rich LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 cathode, we demonstrate that the chemical and structural stability of the deep delithiated NCM cathodes are significantly dominated by Co rather than the widely reported Mn. Operando synchrotron X-ray characterization coupling with in situ mass spectrometry reveal that the Co4+ reduces prior to the reduction of Ni4+ and could thus prolong the Ni migration by occupying the tetrahedra sites and, hence, postpone the oxygen release and thermal failure. In contrast, the Mn itself is stable, but barely stabilizes the Ni4+. Abstract:Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials, such as LiNi0.83Co0.12Mn0.05O2 (NCM811), exhibit high specific capacity and low cost, and become cathode material preference of high-energy-density Li-ion batteries. However, these cathode materials are not stable and will form Li-poor reconstructed layers and alkaline compounds (Li2CO3, LiOH) on the surface during the storage and processing in humid air, resulting in serious deterioration of electrochemical properties. During the past two decades, the consensus on the surface instability mechanism during humid air storage has not been reached. The main controversy focuses on the unstable octahedron mechanism and the Li/H exchange mechanism. Herein, we investigate the instability mechanism in the humid air by conducting scanning electronic microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis on NCM811 samples stored in designed atmospheres, etc., and realize that the surface instability of the NCM811 during storage should be mainly originated from Li/H exchange when it contacts with moisture.

Abstract:Layered LiMO2 (M = Ni, Co, Mn, and Al mixture) cathode materials used for Li-ion batteries are reputed to be highly reactive through their surface, where the chemistry changes rapidly when exposed to ambient air. However, conventional electron/spectroscopy-based techniques or thermogravimetric analysis fails to capture the underlying atom-scale chemistry of vulnerable Li species. To study the evolution of the surface composition at the atomic scale, here we use atom probe tomography and probed the surface species formed during exposure of a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode material to air. The compositional analysis evidences the formation of Li2CO3. Site specific examination from a cracked region of an NMC811 particle also suggests the predominant presence of Li2CO3. These insights will help to design improved protocols for cathode synthesis and cell assembly, as well as critical knowledge for cathode degradation

Abstract:The cathode material LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 with excellent electrochemical performance was prepared successfully by a rheological phase method. The materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge tests. The results showed that both calcination temperatures and atmosphere are very important factors affecting the structure and electrochemical performance of LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 material. The sample calcinated at 800 °C under O2 atmosphere displayed well-crystallized particle morphology, a highly ordered layered structure with low defects, and excellent electrochemical performance. In the voltage range of 2.8–4.3 V, it delivered capacity of 188.9 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C and 130.4 mAh g−1 at 5 C, respectively. The capacity retention also reached 93.9% after 50 cycles at 0.5 C. All the results suggest that LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:By virtue of the crucial effect of the crystal structure and transition metal(TM) redox evolution on the performance of LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM) cathode,systematical investigation is carried out to better understand the charge mechanism upon deep charging.Based on the results of X-ray diffraction and highresolution transmission electron microscope,phase transformations existing on particle surface are promoted by high potential because of the deeper lithium vacancies,accompanied by more substantial structure instability.Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates that Ni acts as the major contributor to charge compensation while Co displays a remarkable redox activity over the deep charge range.The elevated integrated intensity of pre-edge in O K-edge spectra reveals the extensive amount of holes formed in O 2 p orbitals and the enhanced hybridization of TM 3 d-O 2 p orbitals.Considering the close relationship between thermal behavior and structural evolution,the tendency of phase transitions and O 2 release upon heating is accelerated by voltage rise,demonstrating the aggravated instability due to deeper Li utilization.Remaining Li contents in NCM are employed to estimate the amount of oxygen released in structural transformation and its detrimental effect on stability declares Li contentdependent characteristics.Furthermore,the extended Li vacancies,higher proportion of Ni 4+ and stronger orbital hybridization are considered as three factors impeding the thermal stability of the highlydelithiated NCM.

Abstract:With advantages such as high specific capacity and low cost, Ni-rich layered oxides are considered to be ideal cathode materials for power batteries. However, due to the high sensitivity of materials to air, structural degradation occurs during transportation and storage, resulting in the formation of an impurity layer. The degradation of the structure will weaken the comprehensive properties of Ni-rich cathode materials. The impurity layer will bring difficulties to the subsequent electrode manufacturing process, which seriously limits the practical application of Ni-rich materials. Therefore, it is particularly important to explore the storage decline mechanism of Ni-rich materials. Herein, the decay mechanism of structure and electrochemical properties of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials after storage at room temperature and high humidity and high-temperature and humidity were studied. It is found that the instability of Ni3+ leads to the appearance of NiO rock salt phase on the surface of the material, accompanied by the formation of reactive oxygen species. Lithium and reactive oxygen species in the material react with H2O and CO2 in the air to form surface residual lithium compounds. The formation of the inert NiO layer and residual lithium compounds hinders the diffusion kinetics of Li+, resulting in serious capacity loss. During the high-temperature storage process, the material forms thicker residual lithium compounds, which aggravates the decay process. After 28 days of high-temperature storage, a residual lithium compound layer of about 7 nm thickness was formed, which seriously hindered the transmission of Li+. This study is helpful to deeply understand the storage failure behavior of Ni-rich cathode materials and promote the large-scale industrial production and application of Ni-rich cathode materials.

Abstract:The nickel-rich layered oxide LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) is a promising future cathode material for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles due to its high specific energy density. However, it exhibits fast voltage and capacity fading. In this article, we combine electrochemistry, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), and ex situ solid-state NMR spectroscopy to provide new insights into the structural changes and lithium dynamics of NMC811 during electrochemical charge and discharge, which are essential for a better understanding of its fast degradation. The evolution of the interlayer spacing is tracked by XRD, showing that it gradually increases upon delithiation before collapsing at high state-of-charge (SOC). Importantly, no two-phase O3 -> O1 transition is observed at high SOC, demonstrating that this cannot be a major cause of degradation. A strong increase of Li dynamics accompanies the increase of the interlayer spacing, which is shown by Li-7 NMR and electrochemical characterization. At high SOC, Li mobility drops considerably, and Li/vacancy ordering can be observed by NMR. A detailed analysis of Li-7 NMR spectra at different SOC is provided, demonstrating how Li NMR can be used to extract information on the dynamics of such challenging paramagnetic samples with several hundred different local Li environments. The insights on the evolution of structure and dynamics of NMC811 will further the understanding of its cycling behavior and contribute to the efforts of mitigating its performance fade.

Abstract:LiNi1-x-yMnxCoyO2 (NMC) is an important class of high-energy-density cathode materials. The possibility of changing both x and y in the chemical formula provides numerous materials with diverse electrochemical and structural properties. It is highly desirable to have guidance on correlating NMC structural and electrochemical properties with their chemical composition for material designing and screening. Here, using synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical characterization, and literature survey, the content difference between Mn and Co (denoted as x-y in NMC) is identified as an effective indicator to estimate Li/transition metal (Li/TM) cation mixing ratio and first-cycle Coulombic efficiency (CE). In addition, a linear relationship between oxygen position "z" and the size difference between Li+ and TM cation (normalized by the c-axis length) is found, and such linearity can be used to accurately predict the oxygen position in NMC materials by considering the average TM cation size and c-axis length. It is also concluded that the shortest O-O distance in the bulk of NMC materials could not be shorter than 2.5 angstrom even at a highly charged state. Therefore, oxygen release is not likely to take place from the bulk if the structure maintains the R (3) over bar m symmetry.

Abstract:The combination of thermogravimetric analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis and mass spectrometry (TG-IR-MS) are used to explore the kinetic characteristics and thermal stabilities of Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O2 (NCM111) cathode under different states of charge (SOC). The sequence and amount of gas products generated during the thermal decomposition of cathode material are identified through thermogravimetric analysis combined with the FTIR spectrum and mass spectrometry. It is found that the amount of oxygen generation is proportional to SOC. In addition, Fraser-Suzuki function is used as a deconvolution method to separate the overlapped reaction process. The kinetic analysis of the major reaction stage is carried out. Results show the higher the SOC, the lower the activation energy. X-ray diffraction tests reveals that the structural stability of the cathode is weaken by the increase of SOC. The micro-calorimeter tests indicate that the thermal stability of coexist system decreases with the increase of SOC. This research can provide valuable information for the research on the thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion batteries and battery safety design.
