Abstract:Lithium ion capacitors (LICs), bridging the advantages of batteries and electrochemical capacitors, are regarded as one of the most promising energy storage devices. Nevertheless, it is always limited by the anodes that accompany with low capacity and poor rate performance. Here, we develop a versatile and scalable method including ball-milling and pyrolysis to synthesize exfoliated MoS2 supported by N-doped carbon matrix derived from chitosan, which is encapsulated by pitch-derived carbon shells (MoS2/CP). Because the carbon matrix with high nitrogen content can improve the electron conductivity, the robust carbon shells can suppress the volume expansion during cycles, and the sufficient exfoliation of lamellar MoS2 can reduce the ions transfer paths, the MoS2/CP electrode delivers high specific capacity (530 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)), remarkable rate capability (230 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and superior cycle performance (73% retention after 250 cycles). Thereby, the LICs, composed of MoS2/CP as the anode and commercial activated carbon (21 KS) as the cathode, exhibit high power density of 35.81 kW kg(-1) at 19.86 W h kg(-1) and high energy density of 87.74 W h kg(-1) at 0.253 kW kg(-1).

Abstract:Monodisperse sulfonated polystyrene (SPS) microspheres are employed as both the template and carbon source to prepare MoS2 quasi-hollow microspheres-encapsulated porous carbon. The synthesis procedure involves the hydrothermal growth of MoS2 ultrathin nanosheets on the surface of SPS microspheres and subsequent annealing to remove SPS core. Incomplete decomposition of SPS during annealing due to the confining effect of MoS2 shells leaves residual porous carbon in the interior. When being evaluated as the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, the as-prepared C@MoS2 microspheres exhibit excellent cycling stability (95% of capacity retained after 100 cycles) and high rate behavior (560 mAh g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)).

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:Traditional graphite anode material typically shows a low theoretical capacity and easy lithium decomposition. Molybdenum disulfide is one of the promising anode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries, which possess low cost, unique two-dimensional layered structure, and high theoretical capacity. However, the low reversible capacity and the cycling-capacity retention rate induced by its poor conductivity and volume expansion during cycling blocks further application. In this paper, a collaborative control strategy of monodisperse MoS2/graphite composites was utilized and studied in detail. MoS2/graphite nanocomposites with different ratios (MoS2:graphite = 20%:80%, 40%:60%, 60%:40%, and 80%:20%) were prepared by mechanical ball-milling and low-temperature annealing. The graphite sheets were uniformly dispersed between the MoS2 sheets by the ball-milling process, which effectively reduced the agglomeration of MoS2 and simultaneously improved the electrical conductivity of the composite. It was found that the capacity of MoS2/graphite composites kept increasing along with the increasing percentage of MoS2 and possessed the highest initial discharge capacity (832.70 mAh/g) when MoS2:graphite = 80%:20%. This facile strategy is easy to implement, is low-cost, and is cosmically produced, which is suitable for the development and manufacture of advance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract3D nanohybrid structures with few-layered MoS2 nanosheets uniformly incorporated in the carbon substrate are prepared via using the rapid and homogeneous microwave-hydrothermal method, in which the size of the basic unit structure of MoS2/C was small. The samples were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy for structure and composition test. The electrochemical performances of the composites are evaluated by cyclic voltammogram, galvanostatic charge–discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the maximum-specific capacitance of the MoS2/C electrodes reaches up to 1003 mAh g–1 at a discharge current density 100 mA g–1. The MoS2/C hybrid composite remains 755 mAh g–1 after 50 cycles at the current of 200 mA g–1, much higher than that of the pure MoS2. The superior electrochemical performances of MoS2/C composites as Li-ion battery anodes are attributed to their enhanced available active sites for charges, decreased transmission resistance between interlayers, improved electronic conductivity as well as good mechanical stability.

Abstract:A facile process to synthesize graphene-like MoS2/amorphous carbon (a-C) composites was developed. MoS2/C composites were firstly prepared by hydrothermal method employing sodium molybdate, sulfocarbamide and glucose as starting materials. The graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites were obtained after annealing at 800 degrees C in H-2/N-2. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and HRTEM. It was confirmed that in the composites MoS2 has a structure of single-layer, which is named graphene-like nanostructure. The graphene-like MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in amorphous carbon. The interlaminar distance of the adjacent graphene-like MoS2 nanosheets in the composites measured was similar to 1.0 nm. The mechanism of the formation of the graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites was investigated. The graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites exhibited high capacity and excellent cyclic stability used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The composite prepared by adding 1.0 g of glucose in hydrothermal solution exhibited the highest reversible capacity (962 mAh g(-1)) and excellent cyclic stability. After 100 cycles, it still retained 912 mAh g(-1). The significant improvements in the electrochemical properties of the graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites could be attributed to the graphene-like structure of the MoS2 nanosheets and the synergistic effects of graphene-like MoS2 and amorphous carbon.

Abstract:Due to their superior theoretical specific capacity and energy density, lithium-sulfur (L‒S) batteries are gaining popularity in order to achieve the growing terms for more power generation. However, drawbacks such as low electrical conductivity of the active ingredient sulfur, severe volume expansion and shuttle effect of polysulfides, rapidly decaying battery capacity, and short battery life have hampered their development. A MoWS2@MXene@CNT composite material is used as the main cathode material for L-S batteries in this study. MoWS2 can improve the electrochemical reaction rate by accelerating polysulfide conversion, whereas MXene can suppress electrode volume expansion. Furthermore, the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNT) with high electrical conductivity improves the rate of the electrochemical reaction. Therefore, the MoWS2@MXene@CNT composites have good capacity and versatility as cathode materials and enhance the behavior of L-S batteries.

Abstract:MoS2 is one of the most remarkable two-dimensional transition meta dichalcogenides (TMDs) and is investigated widely by scientific researchers on its capability of energy storage in our era of energy deficiency. But its inherent characteristics of low conductivity and tendency to agglomerate during continuous charge/discharge limit its practical application in fields such as rechargeable batteries. MoS2 is usually applied on anode of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are one of the mostly used rechargeable batteries in our daily life. To overcome the above shortages of MoS2, carbon materials are introduced by researchers and numbers of reports about application of MoS2-C are issued every year. Therefore, we focus on this promising composite, expound the lithium-storage mechanism, discuss several preparation methods, put forward different kinds of carbon materials and summarize recent progresses of MoS2-C anode in LIBs. In this review we've listed various fabricating methods, specific morphologies, and good electrochemical performance. Additionally, the relations between morphologies and electrochemical performance are also mentioned. Besides, problems in LIBs remained up to now are presented and probable developing opportunities in this field are discussed.

One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Subspheroidal Core–Shell Structure MoS2/C Composite as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its distinctive graphene-like structure and high specific capacity. However, its commercial application is hindered by the severe volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation and poor conductivity. In this paper, we report a facile one-pot enhanced hydrothermal synthesis strategy to prepare high-performance MoS2/C composite materials. The results indicate that the as-prepared MoS2/C composite is a subspheroidal core–shell structure material, with uniform coating, good particle dispersion, and an average grain size of approximately 80 nm. The morphology of the composite remained unchanged even after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h. The addition of glucose can accelerate the nucleation and growth of MoS2, and higher hydrothermal temperatures can improve the product yield. The addition of PVP has little effect on the yield, but significantly reduces the particle size. The XPS analysis reveals that the MoO3 may be generated as an intermediate product during the hydrothermal process. The electrochemical test results show that the unannealed MoS2/C samples exhibit discharge-specific capacities of 705.2 mAh·g−1 and 625.7 mAh·g−1 after the first cycle and the 100th cycle, respectively, at a current density of 500 mA·g−1, with a capacity retention rate of 88.7%. In contrast, the specific capacity of the MoS2/C specimens after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h shows a tendency to decrease and then slowly increase during the cycles, and the discharge specific capacity is 582.3 mAh·g−1 after the 100th cycle, which is lower than that of the unheated sample. The impedance analysis reveals that the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of the MoS2/C material without calcination is 2.11 × 10−18 cm·s−2, which is superior to that of the annealed MoS2/C and pristine MoS2 samples. This characteristic is favorable for lithiation/delithiation during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:Ion crystal ammonium tetrathiomolybdateas (NH4)2MoS4 with the octahedral structure and high hardness could efficiently transfer and magnify the impacting and shearing force generated from ball-milling process to the surface of expandable graphite (EG) to accelerate its exfoliation and fragmentation. The obtained massive precursor comprised of nano-(NH4)2MoS4 and carbon nanosheets with few layers could transfer into MoS2/C sandwiched nanocomposites after subsequent calcination, which owns satisfied Li-storage performance even at relatively high current density.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfide materials (TMSs) with remarkable rate stability and desirable energy density have become the promising anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the low electrical conductivity and severe volume variation, always result in serious capacity decay during the charge-discharge process. In this work, we report a convenient and facile strategy to prepare MOFs-derived CoS2–MnS nanoparticles by using Co–Mn-based metal-organic frameworks (Co–Mn MOFs) as a precursor. In addition, CoS2–MnS/C (terephthalic acid, PTA), CoS2– (carbon nanotubes) and CoS2– (reduced graphene oxide) electrode materials are successfully synthesized by introducing carbon matrix materials. Benefiting from the synergistic between CoS2–MnS and the different carbon, CoS2– electrode materials display excellent rate capability and cycle stability. The CoS2– composites offer outstanding rate performance (1620 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1) and high reversible capacity (1327 and 927 mA h g−1 at 100 and 1000 mA g−1, respectively, after 100 cycles). Because of its high cycle performance and excellent lithium storage performance, the CoS2– can be considered as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been intensively investigated for its high theoretical capacity as an advanced anode material for lithium storage. However, the low electronic conductivity and frail layered structure give rise to its poor cycling stability and low rate performance. Herein, by taking advantages of the porous structure and the high N content of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derivatives, a facile and scalable method combining electrospinning and following a hydrothermal process was developed to fabricate MoS2-based composite fibers, in which ultrathin MoS2 nanoplates were vertically assembled on the polyacrylonitrile-MOF-derived N-doped porous carbon nanofibers (PCNF). As expected, benefiting from the hierarchical structure of PCNF and the synergies between MoS2 and PCNF, the obtained PCNF@MoS2 exhibited high capacity and cycling performance in a lithium battery.

Abstract:Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) are a new generation of hybrid energy storage devices, and there is room for improvement in power characteristic, energy density and cycling life. This paper proposes a facile and high-efficiency strategy for the preparation of high-performance MoS2 based anodes, here we have successfully synthesized a multi-dimensional hybrid heterogeneous composite material (MoS2@C) in which nanoparticles, nanoflakes and hollow nanospheres coexist. The strong adhesion of the Mo-O-C bond formed between MoS2 and carbon ensures favorable structural integrity, while the architecture made of nanoflakes reduces the diffusion distance of Li+. In addition, the voids of the hollow structure can alleviate the volume change during repeated Li+ intercalation/de-intercalation processes and ensure good contact between the material and the electrolyte solution. Moreover, due to the confinement effect of the hollow structure and carbon and the introduction of oxygen vacancies, excellent rate performance is achieved. Given this, in a wide potential window of 0–4.5 V, the MoS2@C//AC device has the highest energy density (189.68 Wh kg−1), the maximum power density (11.25 kW kg−1), subordinate self-discharge rate and long lifespan. Therefore, this research work provides some important ideas and insights for the rational design of MoS2-based high-performance LICs anode materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, which display considerable theoretical capacity and large layer spacing, have been regarded as promising candidates as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their low conductivity and large volume change during charge-discharge cycles leads to performance degradation. Herein, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is used as a soft template to synthesize PVP-derived nitrogen-doped carbon-coated MoS2 composites (MoS2/NC) by a simple hydrothermal method followed by high-temperature treatment. The as-prepared composite exhibits a flowerball-like morphology and a diameter of approximately 250 nm. The optimized MoS2/NC has the most uniform particle size and provides the best performance, with a stable capacity of 504.9 mAh g-1 after 120 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. It has excellent rate performance, which can reach 524.6, 481.9, 447.7, 412.5, and 370.9 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2 A g-1, respectively. The small particle size and the addition of carbonaceous materials play an important role in their excellent electrochemical properties. This study opens up a simple and effective way to synthesize high-performance two-dimensional MoS2 composite anodes for SIBs.
MoS2/CoS2 Binary Composites for Supercapacitor Electrode Materials

Abstract:MoS2/CoS2 binary composites with different raw material ratios was prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal process as electrode material for supercapacitors. Results of electrochemical performance show that MoS2/CoS2 binary composites exhibit the highest specific capacitance (549 F/g at 2 mV/s or 434 F/g at 1 A/g) and excellent cycling stability as the molar ratio of Mo:Co is 2:1 in raw materials. And microstructure and morphology analyses reveal that the MoS2/CoS2 binary composites are composed of octahedron-shaped CoS2 and flower-liked MoS2. Above all, due to the coupling of two components, large surface areas and tunable composition, the obtained MoS2/CoS2 binary composite electrodes possess the best electrochemical properties.

Abstract:Nanocomposites that combine porous materials and a continuous conductive skeleton as a sulfur host can improve the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) anchoring small-size (~40 nm) N-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (S-NCPs/CNTs) are designed and synthesized via annealing the precursor of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 grown in situ on CNTs (ZIF-8/CNTs). In the nanocomposite, the S-NCPs serve as an efficient host for immobilizing polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical bonding, while the interleaved CNT networks offer an efficient charge transport environment. Moreover, the S-NCP/CNT composite with great features of a large specific surface area, high pore volume, and short electronic/ion diffusion depth not only demonstrates a high trapping capacity for soluble lithium polysulfides but also offers an efficient charge/mass transport environment, and an effective buffering of volume changes during charge and discharge. As a result, the Li-S batteries based on a S/S-NCP/CNT cathode deliver a high initial capacity of 1213.8 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 0.2 C and a substantial capacity of 1114.2 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, corresponding to a high-capacity retention of 91.7%. This approach provides a practical research direction for the design of MOF-derived carbon materials in the application of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The poor electrical conductivity of sulfur and electrochemically active solid-state products (Li 2 S n , n = 1–3), and the shuttle effect have led to the low cycling stability of lithium-sulfur batteries and the low utilization of the sulfur cathode. In this work, 3D porous biomass-derived carbon material (KMC) was prepared from Miscanthus sinensis by KOH activation. The transition metal sulfide with excellent adsorption and catalytic characteristics was effectively combined with the conductive porous biomass-derived carbon material, and a KMC/MoS 2 −NiS 2 composite material was obtained. The product was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Results show that MoS 2 −NiS 2 nanoparticles can be uniformly distributed on the porous carbon material. Electrochemical measurements reveal that with an initial specific capacity of 1292 mA h g –1 at a current density of 0.1 C. After 400 cycles at 0.5 C, the specific capacity of KMC/MoS 2 −NiS 2 /S decays from 1007 to 814 mA h g –1 . Thus, the capacity decay rate per cycle is about 0.054 %. This strategy provides a new idea for developing lithium−sulfur batteries with attractive performance.

Abstract:A facile and scalable process was developed for the synthesis of single-layer MoS2-graphene nanosheet (SL-MoS2-GNS) composites based on the concurrent reduction of (NH4)(2)MoS4 and graphene oxide sheets by hydrazine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by annealing in a N-2 atmosphere. The morphology and microstructure of the composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The formation process for the SL-MoS2-GNS composites was also investigated. The SL-MoS2-GNS composites delivered a large reversible capacity and good cycle stability as a Li-ion battery anode. In particular, the composites easily surpassed MoS2 in terms of rate performance and cycle stability at high current densities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the GNS in the composite not only reduced the contact resistance in the electrode but also significantly facilitated the electron transfer in lithiation and delithiation reactions. The good electrochemical performance of the composites for reversible Li+ storage could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of SL-MoS2 and GNS.

Abstract:A novel molybdenum disulfide/carbon (MoS2/C) nanocomposite is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using glucose as a carbon source and Pluronic F127 as promoting agent in presence of MoS2 nanoparticles and followed by carbonization. Pluronic F127 is used as an essential agent which inhibits the spontaneous formation of carbon microspheres during the hydrothermal reaction. The composite electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability and rate capability, delivering a reversible capacity of 882.6 mA h g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1 and a capacity retention of 82.8% after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1. At a higher current density of 300/500 mA g−1, it still retains a capacity of 603.6/461.6 mA h g−1 respectively, as compared to 295.6/228.4 mA h g−1 for the pristine MoS2 electrode. The composite shows favorable electrochemical kinetics compared with pristine MoS2 due to the incorporation of homogenous conductive carbon layer and its nanostructured morphology.
