Abstract:Uncovering the reason for structure-dependent thermoelectric performance still remains a big challenge. A low-temperature and easily scalable strategy for synthesizing Bi2 Te3 nanostring hierarchical structures through solution-phase reactions, during which there is the conversion of "homo-hetero-homo" in Bi2 Te3 heteroepitaxial growth, is reported. Bi2 Te3 nanostrings are obtained through the transformation from pure Bi2 Te3 hexagonal nanosheets followed by TeBi2 Te3 "nanotop" heterostructures to Bi2 Te3 nanostrings. The growth of Bi2 Te3 nanostrings appears to be a self-assembly process through a wavy competition process generated from Te and Bi(3+) . The conversion of homo-hetero-homo opens up new platforms to investigate the wet chemistry of Bi2 Te3 nanomaterials. Furthermore, to study the effect of morphologies and hetero/homo structures, especially with the same origin and uniform conditions on their thermoelectric properties, the thermoelectric properties of Bi2 Te3 nanostrings and TeBi2 Te3 heterostructured pellets fabricated by spark plasma sintering have been investigated separately.

Abstract:An ideal thermoelectric material would be a semiconductor with high electrical conductivity and relatively low thermal conductivity: an "electron crystal, phonon glass". Introducing nanoscale heterostructures into the bulk TE matrix is one way of achieving this intuitively anomalous electron/phonon transport behavior. The heterostructured interfaces are expected to play a significant role in phonon scattering to reduce thermal conductivity and in the energy-dependent scattering of electrical carriers to improve the Seebeck coefficient. A nanoparticle building block assembly approach is plausible to fabricate three-dimensional heterostructured materials on a bulk commercial scale. However, a key problem in applying this strategy is the possible negative impact on TE performance of organic residue from the nanoparticle capping ligands. Herein, we report a wet chemical, surfactant-free, low-temperature, and easily up-scalable strategy for the synthesis of nanoscale heterophase Bi(2)Te(3)-Te via a galvanic replacement reaction. The micro-nano heterostructured material is fabricated bottom-up, by mixing the heterophase with commercial Bi(2)Te(3). This unique structure shows an enhanced zT value of ∼0.4 at room temperature. This heterostructure has one of the highest figures of merit among bismuth telluride systems yet achieved by a wet chemical bottom-up assembly. In addition, it shows a 40% enhancement of the figure of merit over our lab-made material without nanoscale heterostructures. This enhancement is mainly due to the decrease in the thermal conductivity while maintaining the power factor. Overall, this cost-efficient and room-temperature synthesis methodology provides the potential for further improvement and large-scale thermoelectric applications.
Development of Nanostructured Bi2Te3 with High Thermoelectric Performance by Scalable Synthesis and Microstructure Manipulations

Abstract:Nanostructuring of thermoelectric (TE) materials leads to improved energy conversion performance; however, it requires a perfect fit between the nanoprecipitates' chemistry and crystal structure and those of the matrix. We synthesize bulk Bi2Te3 from molecular precursors and characterize their structure and chemistry using electron microscopy and analyze their TE transport properties in the range of 300-500 K. We find that synthesis from Bi2O3 + Na2TeO3 precursors results in n-type Bi2Te3 containing a high number density (Nv ∼ 2.45 × 1023 m-3) of Te-nanoprecipitates decorating the Bi2Te3 grain boundaries (GBs), which yield enhanced TE performance with a power factor (PF) of ∼19 μW cm-1 K-2 at 300 K. First-principles calculations validate the role of Te/Bi2Te3 interfaces in increasing the charge carrier concentration, density of states, and electrical conductivity. These optimized TE coefficients yield a promising TE figure of merit (zT) peak value of 1.30 at 450 K and an average zT of 1.14 from 300 to 500 K. This is one of the cutting-edge zT values recorded for n-type Bi2Te3 produced by chemical routes. We believe that this chemical synthesis strategy will be beneficial for future development of scalable n-type Bi2Te3 based devices.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline binary Bi2Te3 powders were synthesized by a hydrothermal method from BiCl3 and pure tellurium at different temperature. XRD analysis and TEM observation showed that the average grain sizes increase from 15 to 35nm with the increase of the synthesis temperature from 120 to 250°C. Novel Bi2Te3 based nanocomposites were prepared by hot pressing from 90wt.% zone-melted alloys and 10wt.% hydrothermally synthesized nanopowders. It was found that the nanosized powders are effective to reduce the thermal conductivity stronger than the electrical conductivity, a result that improves the figure of merit of a nanocomposite. A maximal ZT value of 0.83 has been obtained. Further improvement on the figure of merit of the nanocomposites are considered to be possible by doping the nanopowders and optimizing the composition of the base alloys.
Novel thermoelectric Bi2Te3 nanotubes and nanocapsules prepared by hydrothermal synthesis

Abstract:Bi2Te3 nano-powders have been prepared via hydrothermal synthesis in closed and opened systems respectively by using Te powder and BiCl3 as the reactants and NaBH4 as the reductant. The morphology and microstructure investigations of the products show that novel quasi-one-dimensional Bi2Te3 nanotubes and nanocapsules with an average diameter of about 100nm have formed during the reactions. The nanotubes-contained powder was used as the additive of hotpressed Bi2Te3 based alloys. Thermoelectric transport measurements show that the thermoelectric properties of the nano-composite bulk materials are remarkably increased. The maximum figure of merit ZT above 1.2 was achieved.

Abstract:Hierarchical Te/Bi2Te3 and Bi2Te3 nanostructures are synthesized by using a one-pot solvothermal method and sintered into pellets by spark plasma sintering (SPS), individually. The thermoelectric properties measurement indicates the electrons/phonon transport is directly influenced by interface state of the hierarchical nanostructures. As compared to Te/Bi2Te3 heterostructures, the higher energy barrier at the interface of homostructured Bi2Te3 (71 meV) leads to the energy filtering effect on the electronic transport and the optimized power factor in the Bi2Te3 pellet. The thermal conductivity is remarkably reduced because of the strong scattering between phonons and high-density defects in both samples. As a result, an enhanced ZT value (0.58) of the Bi2Te3 nanowires was obtained at 353 K. Importantly, the average ZT (0.56), which is comparable to the peak ZT of both samples, is dramatically improved in these hierarchical nanostructures in the temperature range of 313-433 K.

Abstract:We herein demonstrate the successive epitaxial growth of Bi2Te3 and Bi2Se3 on seed nanoplates for the scalable synthesis of heterostructured nanoplates (Bi2Se3@Bi2Te3) and multishell nanoplates (Bi2Se3@Bi2Te3@Bi2Se3, Bi2Se3@Bi2Te3@Bi2Se3@Bi2Te3). The relative dimensions of the constituting layers are controllable via the molar ratios of the precursors added to the seed nanoplate solution. Reduction of the precursors produces nanoparticles that attach preferentially to the sides of the seed nanoplates. Once attached, the nanoparticles reorganize epitaxially on the seed crystal lattices to form single-crystalline core-shell nanoplates. The nanoplates, initially 100 nm wide, grew laterally to 620 nm in the multishell structure, while their thickness increased more moderately, from 5 to 20 nm. The nanoplates were pelletized into bulk samples by spark plasma sintering and their thermoelectric properties are compared. A peak thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) ∼0.71 was obtained at 450 K for the bulk of Bi2Se3@Bi2Te3 nanoplates by simultaneous modulation of electronic and thermal transport in the presence of highly dense grain and phase boundaries.

Abstract:Bi2Te3 nanoplates with a thickness of 15-20 nm and self-assembled flower-like nanostructures using previous nanoplates as building blocks have been fabricated through a low-cost hydrothermal method with ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as an additive. The structures and morphologies of the samples were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements. The growth mechanisms have been proposed based on the experimental results. The nanoplates and flower-like Bi2Te3 nanocrystals (NCs) with no residual additives were consolidated by high pressure to an n-type nanostructured bulk material with preserved crystal grain sizes. Moreover, self-assembly NCs show higher thermoelectric properties than the nanoplates. The power factors and thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of chemically synthesized flowerlike Bi2Te3 NCs were improved up to 8.6 mu W cm(-1) K-2 and 0.7, respectively, which possess the potential to design new materials and devices for thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:Nanocomposites with constituent sizes of <50nm are considered as a promising approach to enhance the figure of merit of bulk thermoelectric materials. A simple route involving hydrothermal synthesis and hot pressing was used in this work to prepare Bi2Te3∕Sb2Te3 bulk nanocomposites. It is shown that the composites have a laminated structure composed of Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 nanolayers with the thickness varying alternately between 5 and 50nm. The transport measurements indicate that the nanoscale laminated structure improves the thermoelectric performance with the maximal dimensionless figure of merit of 1.47 for the nanocomposite hot pressed from Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 nanopowders.

Abstract:Bi2Te3, a typical thermoelectric (TE) material as well as topological insulator, exhibits anisotropy characteristics due to its layered structure. (00l)-oriented Bi2Te3 reported with good TE properties in the ab-plane is not the best choice for "pi"-type nanomicro TE devices. Bi2Te3 nanoplates' growth behavior as well as their corresponding TE properties were modulated on different substrates (Si(111), H-terminated Si(111), and glass) by molecular beam epitaxy in this paper. The interfaces between Bi2Te3 and substrate play an important role in Bi2Te3 nanoplates' morphology, along with the related TE properties. The intersected nanoplates, which possess higher density grain boundaries compared with the stacked ones, filter the low-energy carriers and enhance phonon scattering. Thus, an increased Seebeck coefficient and predictable reduction of thermal conductivity were achieved by using intersected nanoplates. Moreover, the ratio of intersected/stacked Bi2Te3 nanoplates as well as their size can be properly controlled by modulating the substrates' surface and seed layer which can be same applied to other layered materials. This study is conducive to realizing the integration of two-dimensional layered materials in micro-/nanodevices by controlling the specific growth behavior and properties.
Design Principle of Telluride-Based Nanowire Heterostructures for Potential Thermoelectric Applications

Abstract:We present a design principle to develop new categories of telluride-based thermoelectric nanowire heterostructures through rational solution-phase reactions. The catalyst-free synthesis yields Te-Bi(2)Te(3) "barbell" nanowire heterostructures with a narrow diameter and length distribution as well as a rough control over the density of the hexagonal Bi(2)Te(3) plates on the Te nanowire bodies, which can be further converted to other telluride-based compositional-modulated nanowire heterostructures such as PbTe-Bi(2)Te(3). Initial characterizations of the hot-pressed nanostructured bulk pellets of the Te-Bi(2)Te(3) heterostructure show a largely enhanced Seebeck coefficient and greatly reduced thermal conductivity, which lead to an improved thermoelectric figure of merit. This approach opens up new platforms to investigate the phonon scattering and energy filtering.

Abstract:Single-phase La-containing Bi2Te3 based nanopowders have been synthesized via a hydrothermal route using BiCl3, LaCl3, selenium and tellurium powders as the reactants, NaBH4 as the reductant, NaOH as the pH-value controller and ethylenediaminetetraacetic disodium salt (EDTA) as the additive. The synthesized powders have a flower-like morphology assembled by the side-by-side arrangement of the nano-sheets. Rietveld refinement analyses of crystal structure indicated that the alloyed lanthanum substituted bismuth at the 6c lattice position of Bi2Te3 based compounds. The thermoelectric property measurements of the hot-pressed samples showed that the substituting lanthanum in the Bi2Te3 based compounds was an n-type dopant. A ZT value of about 0.58 has been obtained for the La0.2Bi1.8Te3 alloy at 480K.

Abstract:Both heterostructures and hollow nanostructures have been predicted as candidates with excellent thermoelectric performance. In this Research News areticle, recent advances with regard to synthetic strategies, growth mechanisms, and thermoelectric properties of one-dimensional heterostructures (segmented and core/shell) and tubular nanostructures are reported. The thermoelectric property studies of Te/Bi core/shell heterostructured nanowires and Bi2Te3 nanotubes indicate that the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of these materials can be optimized to improve their thermoelectric performance. In addition, the current issues and future research directions for promising thermoelectric nanostructures will be discussed on the basis of these experimental results.
Solvothermal synthesis of nanostructured Bi_2Te_3 based thermoelectric materials

Abstract:The recent development on the solvothermal synthesis of nanostructured bismuth tellurides has been reviewed. The chemical reactions and crystal growth during solvothermal synthesis, especially the synthesis, formation and structural features of bismuth telluride nanotubes, have been discussed. The bismuth telluride based coessential nanostructured composite, in which the nanopowders have the similar chemical composition as the matrix alloy, reaches a high figure of merit of ZT≈1.25, which not only is much higher than that of the matrix material but also higher than that of the state-of-the-art bulk bismuth telluride based thermoelectric materials.
Study of the Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 Core-Shell Heterojunction Nanostructures

Abstract:Thermoelectric materials convert heat energy into electricity, hold promising capabilities for energy waste harvesting, and may be the future of sustainable energy utilization. In this work, we successfully synthesized core-shell Bi2Te3/Sb2Te3 (BTST) nanostructured heterojunctions via a two-step solution route. Samples with different Bi2Te3 core to Sb2Te3 shell ratios could be synthesized by controlling the reaction precursors. Scanning electron microscopy images show well-defined hexagonal nanoplates and the distinct interfaces between Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3. The similarity of the area ratios with the precursor ratios indicates that the growth of the Sb2Te3 shell mostly took place on the lateral direction rather than the vertical. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the crystalline nature of the as-synthesized Bi2Te3 core and Sb2Te3 shell. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy verified the lateral growth of a Sb2Te3 shell on the Bi2Te3 core. Thermoelectric properties were measured on pellets obtained from powders via spark plasma sintering with two different directions, in-plane and out-of-plane, showing anisotropic properties due to the nanostructure alignment in the pellets. All samples showed a degenerate semiconducting character with the electrical resistivity increasing with the temperature. Starting from Sb2Te3, the electrical resistivity increases with the increase in amounts of Bi2Te3. Thermal conductivity is lowered due to the increase in interfaces and additional phonon scattering. We show that the out-of-plane direction of the BTST 1-3 sample (where 1-3 indicates the ratio of BT to ST) demonstrates a high Seebeck value of 145 μV/K at 500 K which may be attributed to an energy filtering effect across the heterojunction interfaces. The highest overall zT is observed for the BTST 1-3 sample in the out-of-plane direction at 500 K. The zT values increase continuously over the measured temperature range, indicating a probable higher value at increased temperatures.

Abstract:We report a novel synthesis for near monodisperse, sub-10-nm Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. At first, a new reduction route to bismuth nanoparticles is described which are applied as starting materials in the formation of rhombohedral Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. After ligand removal by a novel hydrazine hydrate etching procedure, the nanoparticle powder is spark plasma sintered to a pellet with preserved crystal grain sizes. Unlike previous works on the properties of Bi2Te3 nanoparticles, the full thermoelectric characterization of such sintered pellets shows a highly reduced thermal conductivity and the same electric conductivity as bulk n-type Bi2Te3.

Abstract:Bi2Te3-based alloys are currently best-known, technological important thermoelectric materials near room temperature. In this paper, nanocrystalline Bi2Te3 with different morphologies was synthesized by a solvothermal process based on the reaction between BiCl3, Te, and KBH4 in N,N-dimethylformamide at 100–180°C. KBH4 was used as a reducing agent. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The particle morphologies and size are dependent on the reaction temperature and time. A possible formation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Solution synthesis as a scalable bottom-up growth method shows considerable advantages for designing novel nanostructured bulk composites with augmented thermoelectric performance. Tuning the composition of synthesized materials in the solution process is important for adjusting the carrier type and concentration. Here, we report a modified solvothermal synthesis method for the controlled growth of BixSb2−xTe3 nanoplatelets, which can be sintered into nanostructured bulk pellets by using the spark plasma sintering process. We further demonstrate the tuning of the stoichiometric composition in ternary BixSb2−xTe3 nanoplatelets with high crystallinity and homogenous phase purity, which is proved by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The composition dependence of the thermoelectric performance of p-type BixSb2−xTe3 pellets is also systemically studied. The optimized nanostructured bulk Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 sample is found to have ZT ~0.51 at 375K, which shows great potential for further improving the thermoelectric performance by this solution synthesis method. Considering the progress in n-type Bi–Te–Se composites, our results advocate the promise of bismuth/antimony chalcogenide nanocomposites towards practical thermoelectric applications.
