Abstract:Diagnosis of the gas flow induced by plasma aerodynamic actuation is the basis of plasma flow control.We researched the electrical and flow characteristics of plasma aerodynamic actuation generated on symmetric dielectric barrier discharge actuator.The test results show that the discharge of symmetric actuator,which is generated around the high-voltage electrode,is different from that of asymmetric actuator.There are many fine and narrow pulsed currents at the positive half cycle of actuation voltage,showing that the discharge mode is diffusive but filamentary.The jet induced by plasma aerodynamic actuation is vertical to the actuator surface when the amplitude and phase of the voltage exerted on adjacent electrodes are the same.The maximum velocity of the jet is on the order of m/s.When the amplitude or the phase of the voltage exerted on adjacent electrodes is changed,the top-left or top-right jet is induced while the induced gas flow velocity can hardly be enhanced.

Abstract:A new electrical discharge called sliding discharge was developed to generate plasma aerodynamic actuation for flow control. A microsecond-pulse high voltage with a DC component was used to energize a three-electrode actuator to generate sliding discharge. The characteristics of plasma aerodynamic actuation by sliding discharge were experimentally investigated. Discharge morphology shows that sliding discharge is formed when energized by properly adjusting microsecond-pulse and DC voltage. Compared to dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), the plasma extension of sliding discharge is quasi-diffusive and stable but longer and more intensive. Results from particle image velocimetry (PIV) test indicate that plasma aerodynamic actuation by sliding discharge can induce a 'starting vortex' and a quasi-steady 'near-wall jet'. Body force induced by plasma aerodynamic actuation is about the order of mN, which is stronger than that induced by single DBD. It is inferred that microsecond-pulse sliding discharge may be more effective to generate large-scale plasma aerodynamic actuation, which is very promising for improving aircraft aerodynamic characteristics and propulsion efficiency.

Abstract:Plasma flow control, based on the plasma aerodynamic actuation generated by air discharge, is an active field in aerodynamics due to its potential application in performance improvement of future aircraft. In order to better understand the underlying physical mechanism of plasma flow control, it is important to investigate the relationship between the operating parameters and the plasma aerodynamic actuation characteristics. This paper reports the electrical, optical and mechanical characteristics of surface dielectric barrier discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation excited by microsecond and nanosecond high voltage waveforms. The nanosecond discharge is more diffuser than the microsecond discharge and the discharge current is much larger at the same applied voltage amplitude. The optical emission intensity of the nanosecond discharge plasma is stronger than that of the microsecond discharge plasma, while the rotational and vibrational temperatures of N-2 in the nanosecond discharge plasma are less. In addition, the relative intensity of the first negative system of N-2(+)(B-2 Sigma u(+)-> X-2 Sigma g(+)) and the second positive system of N-2(C-3 Pi(u)-> B-3 Pi(g)) is much less in the nanosecond discharge plasma. The velocity measurements indicate that the air flow induced by the nanosecond discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation is vertical to the dielectric surface, while that induced by the microsecond discharge actuation is parallel to the dielectric surface.

Abstract:This article carries out synthetic measurements and analysis of the characteristics of the asymmetric surface dielectric barrier discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation. The rotational and vibrational temperatures of an N2(C3IIu) molecule are measured in terms of the optical emission spectra from the N2 second positive system. A simplified collision-radiation model for N2(C) and N2+ (B) is established on the basis of the ratio of emission intensity at 391.4 nm to that at 380.5 nm and the ratio of emission intensity at 371.1 nm to that at 380.5 nm for calculating temporal and spatial averaged electron temperatures and densities. Under one atmosphere pressure, the electron temperature and density are on the order of 1. 6 eV and 1011 cm−3 respectively. The body force induced by the plasma aerodynamic actuation is on the order of tens of mN while the induced flow velocity is around 1. 3 m/s. Starting vortex is firstly induced by the actuation; then it develops into a near-wall jet, about 70 mm downstream of the actuator. Unsteady plasma aerodynamic actuation might stimulate more vortexes in the flow field. The induced flow direction by nanosecond discharge plasma aerodynamic actuation is not parallel, but vertical to the dielectric layer surface.

Abstract:By solving the electric potential equation and charge density equation,the electrohydrodynamic body force exerted on the air by the dielectric barrier discharge was determined. Horizontal component of the electrohydrodynamic force was investigated experimentally by electric balances. The thrust of point electrode discharge was measured in a pendulum experiment. Numerical simulation results show that the body force is concentrated near the exposed electrode edge and plasma region. Experimental results show that the relation between exciting voltage and horizontal component of the electrohydrodynamic force is linear. Mechanical characteristics of DBD plasma may be affected greatly by the mode of electrode linking.

Abstract:To validate the effectiveness of atmospheric plasma based flow control technique on the peripheral flow control under low Reynolds numbers, a peripheral flow control experiment system is developed, and corresponding peripheral flow control experiments are conducted. The experimental results show that at the Reynolds numbers of 1.35 × 104 and 1.90 × 104, the flow separation around the circular cylinder can be suppressed effectively, the separated flow field can also be improved greatly owing to the flow disturbances induced by the plasma actuator, and the plasma actuation is effective both in reinforcing and minimizing the vortex induced by flow separation. The test results manifest that atmospheric plasma based flow control is effective in the flow control of blunt bodies at low Reynolds numbers.

Abstract:The pulse discharge plasma chemical process(PPCP) has been widely investigated to remove toxic compounds,and electrical parameters are directly related to the formation of discharge plasma and the removal efficiencies of contaminants,so it is necessary to make research on discharge characteristics under different conditions in order to provide reference for PPCP application.In the experiments,a Blumlein pulse-forming network(BPFN) type of narrow pulse generator and a wire-plate pulse plasma reactor were adopted.The influences of factors such as power supply capacitance,plate distance and dielectric barrier on discharge characteristics were investigated.The results show that increasing the power supply capacitance can improve the utilization efficiency of discharge energy;increasing the plate distance will result in higher peak voltage,lower peak current and shorter pulse width and achieve better waveforms;the dielectric barrier can help solving the spark discharge,and also improve the utilization efficiency of discharge energy.

Abstract:Nanosecond pulse plasma flow control, as an effective active flow control technique, has been widely investigated around the globe. Investigating the characteristics of the nanosecond pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge is rather crucial to understanding the mechanism of nanosecond pulsed discharge. A circuit model was developed for surface dielectric barrier discharge actuator. Wavelet soft-threshold denoisation was employed to denoise the applied voltage and the total loop current recorded in the experiment. Based on the analysis of the circuit model, a method of extracting the discharge current from the experimental data was proposed. Furthermore, the influences of three factors, namely the applied voltage, the repetition frequency and the polarity of the pulse, on the characteristics of the discharge current, charge transport and total deposited energy were examined. The results show that there exist two discharges under the rising and falling period of one single pulse; the discharge current, maximum transporting charge and deposited energy during the discharge are polarity-dependent, and positively related with the applied voltage. Besides, the maximum transporting charge and deposited energy firstly decrease and then increase with the increase of repetitive frequency. Moreover, the repetitive frequency has an impact on the peak value and the width of the discharge current. This paper can be helpful to the study on the development of nanosecond pulse surface dielectric barrier discharge and the calculation of deposited energy into plasma.

Abstract:Active flow control by means of plasma actuators has potential advantages over conventional strategies, e.g., mechanical or hydraulic components may be replaced by lightweight, compact, fast response plasma actuators. In this paper, several designs of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuators are presented for aerospace applications and the focus is on the associated feedback control implementation. The interdisciplinary nature of aerodynamic feedback control with plasma, however, makes direct experimental demonstrating an outstanding challenge. Here, we propose a realistic experimental control implementation afforded by commercial off-the-shelf electric products and the major achievement is the detailed instruction (in both electricity and aerodynamics) and the successful demonstration of the closed-loop design in controlling the dominant modes from a cylinder flow setup. The essence of our approach is to drive DBD plasma actuations by a downstream sensor and excite aerodynamic velocity perturbations, which are further amplified on the shear flow from the cylinder, leading to airflow structures, such as vortex roll-up and randomization, which are measured by the downstream sensor to complete the whole loop. We benchmark our control approach by comparing to the predicted dominant frequencies of the controlled flow system, which can be achieved by the Barkhausen stability criterion after establishing the corresponding transfer function of the whole flow control system. Overall, this paper shall assist a host of new applications in aerospace applications in the near future.
Plasma Sheet Actuator Driven by Repetitive Nanosecond Pulses with a Negative DC Component

Abstract:A type of electrical discharge called sliding discharge was developed to generate plasma aerodynamic actuation for flow control. A three-electrode plasma sheet actuator driven by repetitive nanosecond pulses with a negative DC component was used to generate sliding discharge, which can be called nanosecond-pulse sliding discharge. The phenomenology and behaviour of the plasma sheet actuator were investigated experimentally. Discharge morphology shows that the formation of nanosecond-pulse sliding discharge is dependent on the peak value of the repetitive nanosecond pulses and negative DC component applied on the plasma sheet actuator. Compared to dielectric barrier discharge （DBD）, the extension of plasma in nanosecond-pulse sliding discharge is quasi-diffusive, stable, longer and more intensive. Test results of particle image velocimetry demonstrate that the negative DC component applied to a third electrode could significantly modify the topology of the flow induced by nanosecond-pulse DBD. Body force induced by the nanosecond-pulse sliding discharge can be approximately in the order of mN. Both the maximum velocity and the body force induced by sliding discharge increase significantly as compared to single DBD. Therefore, nanosecond-pulse sliding discharge is a preferable plasma aerodynamic actuation generation mode, which is very promising in the field of aerodynamics.

Abstract:Under normal atmosphere environment,experimental investigation on discharge characteristics and acceleration effects of plasma aerodynamic actuators with normal,semicircle and sawtooth configurations were performed.Frequency-discharge,voltage-discharge current and the boundary induced velocity were measured under different motivation parameters.The experimental results indicate that when the basic design parameters of plasma aerodynamic actuators were given,discharge voltages and discharge currents vary with the configurations but resonance frequency keeps the same,however,the induced gas flow velocities also change.It is also found that the ion streams produced by semicircle and sawtooth plasma aerodynamic actuator have very damage effects to insulation materials.

Abstract:Nanosecond pulsed plasma has an enormous potential in many applications. In this paper, the characteristics of barrier free nanosecond pulsed surface discharge are investigated by the use of an actuator with a strip-strip film electrode configuration, including the effect of electrode width and the gap distance on the plasma morphology and electrical characteristics at atmospheric pressure. It was found that it is relative easier to generate a quasi uniform discharge with a thinner electrode width and a smaller gap distance. The underlying physical mechanism was also discussed. Besides that, the influence of airflow on repetitive pulsed surface discharge was examined. By comparing to the discharge produced by two different pulse waveforms in airflows, we found that the discharge driven by a faster pulse behaves more stable. Finally, a model was developed to analyze the interaction of the airflow and the discharge channels.

Abstract:Flow control using surface Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuators driven by a sinusoidal alternating-current power supply has gained significant attention from the aeronautic industry. The induced flow field of the plasma actuator, with the starting vortex in the wall jet, plays an important role in flow control. However, the energy consumed for producing the induced flow field is only a small fraction of the total energy utilized by the plasma actuator, and most of the total energy is used in gas heating and dielectric heating. Therefore, an in-depth analysis of the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is the key to develop its potential capability further. In addition, compared with the investigation on the aerodynamic characteristics of the plasma actuator, there is a relative lack of detail in the study of its thermal characteristics. Understanding the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator is of great interest for providing a deeper insight into the underlying working principles, advancing its numerical simulation model, prolonging its life, and achieving several potential engineering applications, such as anti-icing and deicing. The present paper reviews the thermal characteristics of the plasma actuator, summarizes the influence of the dielectric film and actuation parameters on heating, and discusses the formation and transfer mechanism of the induced heating based on the discharge regimes of the plasma actuator in one cycle.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation on flow field induced by a dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) plasma actuator with serrated electrodes in still air to further improve its flow control effectiveness. For comparison, the actuator with widely used linear electrodes was also studied. Experiments were carried out using 2D particle image velocimetry. Particular attention was given to the flow topology, discharge phenomenon, and vortex formation mechanism. Results showed that a 2D wall jet was induced by the linear actuators, whereas the plasma actuators with serrated electrode introduced a series of streamwise vorticities, which might benefit flow control(e.g., enhancing the momentum transport in the separated boundary flow). In addition, the mechanism of 3D flow topology induced by the serrated DBD actuator was analyzed in detail.

Abstract:A single dielectric-barrier discharge plasma actuator is an active flow control device that imparts momentum to the fluid through ion acceleration using electromagnetic forces and has been used to suppress flow separation. This paper studies flow over an airfoil and how adding a single dielectric-barrier discharge actuator influences flow characteristics through numerical modeling. Using the spectral proper orthogonal decomposition and large-eddy simulation, flow instabilities are analyzed at their different temporal and spatial scales in the wake region. This study aims to explore the viability of spectral proper orthogonal decomposition for separation control and correlate the decomposed flow modes to the different actuation modes.

Abstract:The plasma synthetic jet is a novel active flow control method because of advantages such as fast response, high frequency and non-moving parts, and it has received more attention recently, especially regarding its application to high-speed flow control. In this paper, the experimental characterization of the plasma synthetic jet actuator is investigated. The actuator consists of a copper anode, a tungsten cathode and a ceramic shell, and with these three parts a cavity can be formed inside the actuator. A pulsed-DC power supply was adopted to generate the arc plasma between the electrodes, through which the gas inside was heated and expanded from the orifice. Discharge parameters such as voltage and current were recorded, respectively, by voltage and current probes. The schlieren system was used for flow visualization, and jet velocities with different discharge parameters were measured. The schlieren images showed that the strength of plasma jets in a series of pulses varies from each other. Through velocity measurement, it is found that at a fixed frequency, the jet velocity hardly increases when the discharge voltage ranges from 16 kV to 20 kV. However, with the discharge voltage fixed, the jet velocity suddenly decreases when the pulse frequency rises above 500 Hz, whereas at other testing frequencies no such decrease was observed. The maximum jet velocity measured in the experiment was up to 110 m/s, which is believed to be effective for high-speed flow control.

Abstract:It is difficult for low pressure plasma to meet the requirements of industry application for batch processing of work pieces.The dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) in air is tried to generate the atmospheric and sub-atmospheric pressurized glow discharge(APGDSAPGD).Epoxy and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) are employed as the dielectric barrier,respectively.The gap spacing is exactly selected as 2,3,4 or 5 mm by a vernier electrode system.A two-grade power supply with two transformers is utilized to obtain a precise voltage output adjustment of 100 V.With the high voltage divider,the sampling resistance and capacitor,the discharge voltage,current and power can be measured.Based on the discharge Lissagous figures,the equivalent capacitance of gas gap and dielectric material can be calculated.The influences of different barrier materials(epoxy and PTFE),electrode spacing(2~5 mm),air pressure(10~100 kPa) and amplitude of applied voltage on DBD discharge phenomena are discussed in detail.When the gap distance is not wider than 3 mm,it seems easy to generate homogeneous and stable APGD by DBD with 0.5 mm thick PTFE.With the electrode spacing increasing,the voltage range of maintaining stable glow discharge reduces,and when the gap is beyond 4 mm,it is difficult to achieve a stable DBD.Under different pressures,the voltage range of maintaining stable DBD is the largest for a gap distance of 3 mm.Compared with 100 kPa discharge,it is easier to achieve a SAPGD,which also has a wider stable discharge voltage range.
Nanosecond Pulsed Discharge Plasma Actuation: Characteristics and Flow Control Performance

Abstract:Nanosecond pulsed discharge plasma actuation is a novel method for high speed flow control. This paper provides an overview of our recent progress in the characteristics and flow control performance of nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (NPDBD) plasma actuation. Both plasma and induced flow characteristics were investigated through optical emission spectroscopy, high speed schlieren, PIV and other methods. A twodimensional plasma-fluid coupled model was established to reveal the plasma evolution, fast heating and fluid responses from nanoseconds to seconds. At subsonic conditions, NPDBD plasma actuation is effective in controlling airfoil/wing leading edge flow separation and cascade corner separation. At supersonic conditions, the effect of NPDBD plasma actuation on shock wave/boundary layer interaction is very tiny, which needs further investigation and optimization.
