Abstract:A novel green up-conversion luminescence material, K3LaTe2O9: Er, was synthesised via a solid-state reaction method. K3LaTe2O9:Er phosphors were characterised by X-ray diffraction, reflectance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, up-conversion spectroscopy and temperature sensing performance analysis. The diffraction pattern of the hexagonal K3LaTe2O9:0.02Er microcrystals was indexed with Miller indices and the lattice constants were a = b = 0.60636 +/- 0.00018 nm, and c = 1.49543 +/- 0.00037 nm. The photoluminescence under 380 nm excitation and the up-conversion luminescence under 980 and 1550 nm pumping were investigated. The influence of Er3+ ion concentration and excitation power on the luminescence properties of K3LaTe2O9:Er was also discussed. K3LaTe2O9:Er phosphor presented green down-shifting emission and up-conversion luminescence under 380, and 980 nm excitation and yellow-green up-conversion luminescence under 1550 nm pumping, respectively, and the red emission component was enhanced with the increment in excitation wavelength. The quenching concentration of Er3+ ions in K3LaTe2O9:Er was much higher than that in normal phosphors. This result can be attributed to the suppression of energy migration because the shortest (0.606 nm) and average distance (0.9720 nm) between Er3+ ions were significantly large in K3LaTe2O9. Therefore, the electric quadrupole-quadrupole interactions between Er3+ ions are the dominant energy transfer process in down-shift emission, and the UCL mechanism can be regarded as the excited state absorption in K3LaTe2O9:Er. Furthermore, the doping concentration of Er3+ ions influenced the temperature sensitivity of K3LaTe2O9:Er.
Chemical Combustion Synthesis and Up-Conversion Properties of Er3+ Doped Yb3Al5O12 Powder

Abstract:Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder has been prepared by chemical combustion and their structural and optical properties are determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and up-conversion (UC) spectra. XRD and TEM show that the powder is composed of a highly crystalline garnet phase. When excited by a 980nm laser diode, the Er3+ doped Yb3Al5O12 powder shows an intense red UC fluorescent band that can be assigned to the transition 4F9/2→4I15/2 of Er3+ and a relatively weak green one corresponding to 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 in the UC spectra. The intensity ratio of the red to green emission is enhanced due to Li+ incorporation. This can be attributed to the modification of local crystal fields around the rare-earth ions. Our results suggest that rare-earth doped alumina nanomaterials have potential applications in flat-panel displays and multicolor fluorescent labels.

Abstract:La2O2S:Er3+,Yb3+ nanocrystalline up-converting phosphors were synthesized by a combustion method at low temperature, using ethanol as pre-ignition fuel and thioacetamide as sulfurizing agent and organic fuel. The phosphors were characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Pure and well-crystallized La2O2S:Er3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles, of the order of 50–200nm, are obtained after a post-treatment in a H2S/N2 flow for 2h at 1000°C. The efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ results in a strong up-conversion upon excitation at 980nm. The emission spectra show the intense green emissions corresponding to the (2H11/2, 4S3/2)→4I15/2 transitions and a red emission corresponding to the 4F9/2→4I15/2 transition. Additionally, within the investigated co-doping concentrations, no significant concentration quenching effect and back energy transfer from Er3+ to Yb3+ were evidenced. This research highlights the influence of the sulfurization treatment on the purity/crystallinity/morphology of the nanocrystals and the luminescence efficiency.

Abstract:A series of double scheelite-type tungstate green phosphors NaGd(WO4)(2):Er3+, Tb3+ were synthesized by a hydrothermal route and subsequent calcination process, and they were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), photoluminescence spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements. The phosphors take on octahedral microcrystals with a mean side length of similar to 2 mu m. In the single doped phosphors system, the energy transfer processes from WO42- to Er3+ or Tb3+ were discussed. The quenching concentrations of Er3+ and Tb3+ are 0.05 and 0.07, respectively. The critical distances for Er3+ and Tb3+ ions are calculated to be 14.28 angstrom and 12.76 angstrom, respectively. When doping Er3+/Tb3+ is applied in the single compound, the concentration quenching effect of Tb3+ ions occurs via a resonant-type dipole-dipole interaction as well as that of Er3+ ions. Under the excitation with ultraviolet (378 nm) or infrared (980 nm) light, the Er3+/Tb3+ co-doped NaGd(WO4)(2) phosphors emit strong green emission. The obtained samples with bright emission intensity and appropriate decay time are suitable for use as green phosphors in the near ultraviolet LEDs and bioimaging applications. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The novel upconversion (UC) luminescence phosphors Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped LaInO3 were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UC luminescent spectra, as well as the UC emission measurements on sintering temperature and Er3+ concentration were employed to characterize the resulting samples. The optimum synthesis temperature of LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ was 1,400 degrees C, and the optimum Er3+-doping concentration was 2%. Both green (527 nm, 549 nm) and red (665 nm) emission bands were observed in LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ under 980 nm laser excitation, which can be assigned to the characteristic level transition of H-2(11/2)-> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2)-> I-4(15/2) of Er3+, respectively. The dependence of the UC emission on pumping-power indicated that the energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ in the LaInO3 host is a three-photon process. The possible UC luminescent mechanism in LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ was discussed in detail.

Abstract:Efficiently up-conversion luminescence can be achieved by replacing the traditional sensitizer Yb3+ ions with Er3+ ions in LaVO4 host under 1550 nm excitation. In contrast to other up-conversion luminescence materials, such as Y2O2S:Er3+, Y2O3:Er3+, YOCl:Er3+, which exhibit red emission, LaVO4:Er3+ samples present an abnormal green emission under 1550 nm excitation. Excited state absorption is the dominating up-conversion luminescence mechanism at low doping concentrations of Era., whereas energy transfer up-conversion predominates at high concentrations of Er3+. Infrared thermal imaging is adopted to investigate the thermal effects of LaVO4:Er3+ sample under 1550 run irradiation. it shows a rapid heating process within 1 similar to 5 s and LaVO4:0.21Er(3+) sample yields a temperature rising of Delta T = 66.46 degrees C under 1550 nm irradiation (207 mW) within 60 s. Therefore, the temperature sensor based on up-conversion luminescence of Er3+ ions (HL11/2)-H-2/S-4(3/2) thermally coupled levels produced significant measurement errors at low temperatures because of the thermal effects and non-uniform temperature of the incident light spot area. Abstract:Y2-xErxMo4O15 (x = 0.04, 0.08, 0.16, 0.32, 0.64, 2.0) phosphors were synthesised at 700 degrees C through a solid-state reaction method. The samples were characterised by XRD and emission spectra analysis. Y2-xErxMo4O15 sampLes showed a strong green emission (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2)) and a weak red emission (F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)) under 1550 and 980 nm excitation. The green emission intensity was enhanced increasing the Er3+ ion doping content, whereas the red emission was basically unchanged. Thus, Er2Mo4O15 exhibited an abnormal green up-conversion Luminescence without concentration quenching under 1550 and 980 nm excitation. The dominating green up-conversion Luminescence was due to the Larger adjacent Er3+center dot center dot center dot Er3+ distance caused by the special structure of Er2Mo4O15, which Limited the energy-transfer process and cross-relaxation responsible for the red up-conversion emission. Therefore, the up-conversion Luminescence mechanism was excited-state absorption under 1550 nm excitation.

Abstract:The up-conversion luminescence properties of trivalent-rare-earth ion-doped orthotantalates are studied under 980 nm laser diode excitation. The results indicate that YTaO4:Tm3+/Yb3+ emits blue and strong infrared emissions respectively corresponding to 1G4→3H6 and 3H4→3H6 transitions of Tm3+ ions, while YTaO4:Er3+/Yb3+ produces strong green and weak red emissions, resulting from 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively. In contrast to three excellent up-conversion phosphors, viz. NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+, Y2O2S:Er3+/Yb3+ and Y2O3:Er3+, YTaO4:Er3+/Yb3+ shows not only strong green emission, but also larger intensity ratio of green to red emission. In addition, it is found that LaTaO4: Er3+/Yb3+ shows the minimum quenching concentration of Yb3+ and weakest up-conversion emission intensity, and the main peak presents blue shift (8 nm/556 nm) as compared with YTaO4:Er3+/Yb3+ and GdTaO4:Er3+/Yb3+. The distinct luminescent characteristics of LaTaO4: Er3+/Yb3+ can be attributed to the larger difference of radius between doped ion and La3+ ion.

Abstract:Erbium (III) oxalate nanoparticles dispersed titania/ÿ-Glycidoxypropyltrimeth-oxysilane composite materials for photonic applications were prepared by a chemical approach combining the microemulsion technique and the sol-gel method at low temperature. Transmission electron microscopy observation shows that the size of the erbium (III) oxalate nanoparticles is in the range from 10 to 40 nm. A relatively strong room-temperature green up-conversion emission at 543 nm (4S3/2→4I15/2) has been measured for the composite thin films with different erbium oxalate content and heat treatment temperature upon excitation at 993 nm. The lifetime of the visible up-conversion emission has been measured. UV-visible transmission spectroscopy results showed that a relatively high transparency (in the visible range) composite thin film could be obtained at a suitably low heat treatment temperature.
Er3+-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 Ferroelectric Thin Films with Enhanced Electrical Properties and Strong Green Up-conversion Luminescence

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials with up-conversion luminescence (UCL) properties have potential opto-electric applications for display and sensing etc. Here, we demonstrate strong green UCL and enhanced electrical properties in Er3+-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 thin films. The thin films are prepared via using a modified chemical solution deposition method. These thin films are phase-pure and crystallized in perovskite structure. The largest remnant polarization (Pr) and highest dielectric constant are obtained from Na0.5Bi0.49Er0.01TiO3 thin films, and their values are 0.22 C/m2 and 1166, respectively. Meanwhile, strong green UCL at 525 nm and 548 nm are observed in Er3+-doped thin films. They are attributed to 2H11/2 to 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 to 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. These thin films have potentials in optoelectrical device applications.

Abstract:A novel Ba5 Zn4 Y8 O21∶Er3+,Yb3+ upconversion phosphor has been synthesized by solid phase meth-od.XRD and SEM measurement results show that the phosphor crystalized well and presented granular appear-ance with average particle size of 1-5μm.Under the excitation of 980 nm laser,extremely bright orange lumi-nescence can be observed.Spectral test results confirm that the emission peaks are located in 520-530 nm,530-550 nm and 650-690 nm.The green emissions originate from the populations of 2 H11/2 and 4 S3/2 energy levels, and the subsequent transitions to the ground state.The red emission is mainly related to the cross relaxation of 4 I11/2 (Er3+)+4 F7/2 (Er3+)→4 F9/2 (Er3+)+4 F9/2 (Er3+)and the reverse energy transfer of 4 S3/2 (Er3+)+ 2 F7/2 (Yb3+)→4 I13/2 (Er3+)+ 2 F5/2 (Yb3+),as well as the transitions of 4 I13/2→4 F9/2 and 4 F9/2→4 I15/2 .Due to the cross relaxation and reverse energy transfer,the red emission intensity can be effectively improved and the green emission can be reduced,so that the red emission intensity can reach 6-1 3 times of the green emission intensity. The best doping concentration of Er3+ was 3mol% under the condition of 7mol% Yb3+ doping content.Impro-ving the power density of excitation light can not only enhance the UCL,but also improve the intensity ratio of red and green light.Under high power excitation,the blue and blue-green emissions caused by three photon ab-sorption can also be observed.

Abstract:Cerium-doped terbium-lutetium aluminum garnet ((TbxLu1-x)2.9Al5O12: 0.1Ce) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. The crystalline phase, morphology and photoluminescence properties were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and color coordinates analysis, respectively. The results show that with the increasing amount of x (Tb 3+ ), Lu3Al5O12 (LuAG) phase changes gradually to Tb3Al5O12 (TAG) phase with single-crystalline characteristic, and the average particle size of the powders increases. Because of the result of a decrease of the difference between the energy centroids of the 5d and 4f configurations and an increase of the effective ligand field on the Ce-5d shell, the emission spectrum of the samples has a red-shift of 37 nm and shifts toward the saturated colors, but the emission intensity decreases. The findings indicate that it could make the garnet phosphors green to orange tunable for the applications of white LED using the mutual doping effects of Lu 3+ and Tb 3+ in garnet structure.

Abstract:For the first time, undoped and Yb3+/Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm) codoped orthorhombic lutetium oxyfluorides have been fabricated via a facile stepwise route involving room temperature co-precipitation and a subsequent thermal decomposition procedure. The phase formation, crystal structure, particle morphologies and up-conversion (UC) luminescence were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, IR, thermal and luminescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the intermediate Lu(CO3)(1-x)(OH)(y)F1+2x-y precursor plays an essential role in the formation of the final metastable LunOn-1Fn+2 Vernier phase. Multicolour up-conversion has been achieved in the Yb3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ codoped samples under near-infrared excitation (lambda = 980 nm) and, notably, the Yb3+/Er3+ codoping yields an almost single-band red emission at about 660 nm. A short Ln(3+)-Ln(3+) distance combined with the multiple doping sites in the low symmetry (C-1 and C-s) host lattice are considered responsible for the effective energy transfer and, therefore, the intense up-conversion emission. The present work, together with previous studies on the UC performance of Vernier phase yttrium oxyfluorides, illustrates that the Vernier phase oxyfluorides are promising up-conversion host materials for lanthanide ions in a variety of applications such as bioprobes and chromatic displays.
Preparation of LaOBr:Er 3+ Up-conversion Luminescent Nanobelts by Electrospinning then Bromination

Abstract:Electrospun nanobelts were prepared from lanthanum oxybromide doped with trivalent erbium ions (La2O3:Er3+), then up-conversion nanobelts were successfully synthesized from these by bromination with ammonium bromide (NH4Br) powder as bromine source and use of a double-crucible method. The products were characterized in detail by x-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicated the LaOBr:Er3+ nanobelts were tetragonal in structure with the space group P4/nmm. The width and the thickness of LaOBr:Er3+ nanobelts were 3.06 ± 0.42 μm and 290 nm, respectively. On excitation with a 980-nm diode laser, LaOBr:Er3+ the nanobelts emitted strong green and red up-conversion emission centered at 522 nm, 541 nm, and 667 nm. The green and red emission was assigned to the energy level transitions 2H11/2 → 4I15/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2, and 4F9/2 → 4I l5/2 of the erbium ions (Er3+). A mechanism of formation LaOBr:Er3+ up-conversion luminescence nanobelts is proposed. This bromination technique not only results in preservation of the morphology of precursor rare earth oxides, it can also be used to fabricate other pure-phase rare earth oxybromide luminescence nanomaterials at relatively low calcination temperatures.
Green up-conversion luminescence and optical thermometry of Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped LiLuW2O8 phosphor

Abstract:Up-conversion fluorescent materials serve a significant function as the detection materials of temperature sensors. In this study, a series of green-emitting LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors applied in optical temperature sensing detection were successfully synthesized via the solid-state process in air. The crystal structure, luminescence properties, luminescence mechanism, and optical temperature sensing properties of samples were investigated. LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphor with excitation at 980 nm emits pronounced green emissions owing to the 2H11/2 → 4I15/2 and 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions. The whole emission processes of LiLu0.72W2O8:0.24 Yb3+, 0.04Er3+ sample are all two-photon processes. Moreover, we apply thermal coupling levels (2H11/2, 4S3/2) for temperature sensing and the value of sensing sensitivity can reach the maximum of about 1.41% K−1. All the experimental results imply that LiLuW2O8:Yb3+, Er3+ phosphors show good potential in temperature sensing.

Therefore, developing more materials with excellent upconversion luminescence properties is urgent. Herein, a green phosphor Ba3GdAl2O7.5: Yb3+, Er3+ is obtained by high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure is characterized by the X-ray powder diffraction. The upconversion luminescence properties are displayed under the excitation of 980 nm near-infrared laser, and the optimal doping concentrations of Yb3+ and Er3+ ions in the crystal are determined by the control variable method. In addition, the excellent temperature sensing performance of Ba3GdAl2O7.5: 0.2Yb3+, 0.02Er3+ indicates that it is a candidate for practical applications as an optical temperature sensor.

Abstract:Lu2O3:Er3+ powders were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation. Ultraviolet, violet and blue upconversion properties of Lu2O3:Er3+ powders as a function of Er3+ concentration were investigated upon 514.5nm laser excitation. The cross relaxation of 2P3/2+4I15/2→2H9/2+4I13/2 was supposed to be responsible for the adjustable spectral distribution of upconversion emissions. Based on spectral, concentration and pump power dependence analyses, the upconversion mechanisms were proposed. Moreover, Stokes luminescent properties of Lu2O3:Er3+ powders were also observed upon 514.5nm laser excitation. These spectra showed the same concentration-dependent characteristics, and the dependence of emission spectra on Er3+ concentration could be well explained with the cross relaxation of 4F7/2+4I11/2→4F9/2+4F9/2.

Abstract:Low activator concentration in upconversion phosphors has been a hindrance in improving luminescence performance. Herein, we report an Er3+ doping concentration as high as 30 at. % in the CaLuAlO4 upconversion host. The CaLuAlO4:Er3+ phosphors were prepared by the traditional high-temperature solid-state method. Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser, the optimal concentration of Er3+ approaches 30% according to the total integrated intensity of red and green upconversion luminescence. This quenching concentration is one order of magnitude higher than that in the traditional Er3+ doped upconversion polycrystals. The results obtained from first-principles calculations suggest that there are no in-plane or chain rare-earth ions in the cell. This increases the difficulty of propagating excitation energy to quench centers and is advantageous for high doping concentration. Our work can spark people's interest in the research and application of highly doped upconversion phosphors.
