Abstract:A series of novel Ca2LaZr2Al3O12: xCe3+garnet phosphors were obtained by conventional high temperature solid-state reaction. Crystal structure, phase purity, micromorphology as well as luminescence properties are studied via X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscope and photoluminescence spectra including excitation and emission. Moreover, the mechanism of concentration quenching, thermal stability, fluorescent lifetime and quantum efficiency were investigated in detail. Under n-UV excitation, Ca2LaZr2Al3O12: Ce3+ exhibits a broadband of blue emission at 440 nm approximately for maximum, corresponding to 5d-4f transition of Ce3+. Emission can keep 41% of initial intensity when temperature is promoted to 373 K according to temperature-dependence emission spectra. The internal quantum efficiency of the optimal specimen is 15% and with Ce3+ increasing, the color of emission transfers to light from dark blue at CIE.

Abstract:In this work, novel highly efficient cyan-emitting Ce3+-activated CaLu2HfGaAl3O12 (abbreviated as CLHGAO) garnet-structured phosphors were synthesized using the high-temperature solid-state reaction route. Rietveld refinement results demonstrate the as-prepared samples belong to cubic space group Ia 3 ‾ d. These CLHGAO:xCe3+ (x = 0.5–8%) phosphors possessed a broad absorption band in the 320–450 nm wavelength range with a maximum at 408 nm. Upon 408 nm excitation, the CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ sample showed a broad cyan emission band within 425–750 nm wavelength range (emission peak: 493 nm; bandwidth: 95 nm), along with CIE color coordinates of (0.1939, 0.3533) and a high internal quantum efficiency of 81.9%. It is observed that, with increasing Ce3+ doping concentration from 0.5% to 8%, the emission peak position of CLHGAO:xCe3+ moves from 493 nm to 527 nm, and the corresponding emission color changes from cyan to green. Besides, the thermal stability and color stability of CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ phosphor at high temperature are also studied. A white LED device was fabricated by utilizing a 395 nm LED chip with as-prepared CLHGAO:0.5%Ce3+ cyan-emitting phosphor and commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green-emitting phosphor and commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ red-emitting phosphor, and it demonstrates a high-color-quality white light with high color rendering index of 91, low color correlated temperature of 3547 K and good luminous efficacy of 58.71 lmW−1.

Abstract:New garnet phosphors, Lu3−xYxMgAl3SiO12:Ce3+ (x = 0–3), which can be efficiently excited by blue light and emit the yellow-orange light, were developed using the solid solution design strategy combining the chemical unit substitution and the cation substitution. Crystal structures of the four compounds were reported for the first time via the Rietveld refinement of their powder XRD patterns. All phosphors show the general cubic garnet structure with the space group Iad. The specific occupancy of Lu/Y, Al/Mg, Al/Si and O atoms in different positions was identified. The evolution of cell parameters and Y/Lu/Ce–O bond lengths were identified. Photoluminescence properties were evaluated on aspects of emission/excitation spectra, internal/external quantum efficiency and thermal emission stability. Under the 450 nm blue light excitation, the phosphors exhibit bright yellow color emission, peaking in the 575–597 nm spectral range. The internal and external quantum efficiency can reach 83% and 58%, respectively. The emission red-shift in response to the Y/Lu ratio variation was discussed in relation to the local structure evolution. The phosphors are relatively promising to act as wavelength converter of blue light in white light emitting diodes.
A Broad-Band Orange-Yellow-Emitting Lu2mg2al2si2o12: Ce3+ Phosphor for Application in Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:A new garnet-type Lu2Mg2Al2Si2O12 compound was successfully synthesized via high-temperature solidstate reaction. The crystal structure was confirmed by the Rietveld refinement method and belongs to a cubic system with a space group of Ia (3) over bard (230) and cell parameters of a = b = c = 11.88310(1) degrees A. There are two different crystallographic positions for Mg2+ with coordination numbers of eight and six, respectively. A relatively large band gap (4.83 eV) was estimated by the diffuse reflectance spectrum, indicating that Lu2Mg2Al2Si2O12 may be a promising host matrix for luminescent materials. The synthetic Ce3+-doped Lu2Mg2Al2Si2O12 phosphor shows intense and broad-band orange-yellow emission peaking at about 575 nm under near-ultraviolet (n-UV) and blue light excitation. Additionally, the quantum efficiency, thermal stability, and packing performance were investigated to evaluate the practical use in white LEDs. The results indicate that Lu2Mg2Al2Si2O12: Ce3+ may be a promising orange-yellow phosphor for warm white LEDs.

Abstract:(Lu1-xMnx)(3)Al-2(Al1-xSix)(3)O-12: Ce3+ solid solution phosphors were synthesized via introducing the isostructural Mn3Al2(SiO4)(3) (MAS) into Lu3Al5O12: Ce3+ (LuAG). Moreover, (Lu1-x Mn-x)(3)Al-2(Al1-x Si-x)(3)O-12 : Ce3+ (x = 0-0.2) exhibits substantial spectra broadening (83 -> 115 nm) due to the 5d -> 4f transition of Ce3+ and the T-4(1) -> (6)A(1) transition of Mn2+, respectively. The efficiency of energy transfer (eta(tau), Ce3+ -> Mn2+) gradually increases with the rising Mn2+ content, and the value reach approximately 45% at x = 0.2. Namely, the different characteristics of luminescence evolution based on effect of structural variation substituting (MnSi)(6+) pair for the larger (LuAl)(6+) pair. Therefore, with the structural evolution, the luminescence of the solid solution phosphors could be tuned from green to orange-red tunable by increasing the content of MAS for the applications of general lighting.

Abstract:A series of Ca2YZr2Al3O12:Eu3+ (CYZA) phosphors were successfully synthesized through conventional solid-state method. The electronic structure and their photoluminescence or cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. Under n-UV excitation, the CYZA:Eu3+ exhibits more intense red emission than the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor. A WLED lamp with good color render index was obtained by fabricating the phosphor with BAM:Eu2+ and LuAG:Ce3+ phosphors. The phosphor also exhibits red emission with high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. The degradation resistance can be compared to the commercial Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphor. All the results indicate that the CYZA:Eu3+ has potential applications in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:Solid solution phosphors Gd3Ga2(Al3-ySiy)(O12-yNy):Ce3+ were synthesized by introducing [Si4+ + N3-]/[Al3+ + O2-] co-substitution into the lattice of Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+center dot Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce3+, characteristic as outstanding light yield (about 50-60 kPh/MeV), and has been applied in computer tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET) nuclear medical detector, et al. With the increase of y value, the coordination environment around Gd3+(Ce3+) shrinked, which were confirmed by combining techniques of structure refinement, energy-dispersive spectrum, elements distribution mapping. As a result, stronger 5d orbital nephelauxetic effect (epsilon(c)) and bigger 5d energy level splitting (epsilon(cfs)) were induced. Thus resulting in longer wavelength of excitation and emission from Ce3+, and broadening of emission spectra. The typical sample Gd2.95Ga2Al2.5Si0.5O11.5N0.5:0.05Ce(3+) (GGASON(0.5):Ce3+) exhibits sufficient red component and persistent luminescence(> 10 ms), enables fabrication of warm white light suited for alternating-current (AC) when combined with blue light chip (460 nm).

Abstract:Bi3+ doped Ca12Al14O32Cl2 series were successfully synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction method and their luminescence properties have been investigated in detail. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with cubic space group I-43d were obtained by XRD refinement as a=12.0183(3)Å and V (cell volume)=1735.93(1)Å3. The resulting phosphors absorb ultraviolet (UV) light (240–400nm) and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 400–600nm with maximum intensity at 483nm. The Commission Internationale de 1’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates are about x=0.185, y=0.306. Thus, the novel light blue-emitting phosphor Ca12Al14O32Cl2:Bi3+ could be potentially applied in UV white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:In this paper, a new garnet-based Ce3+-activated Ca2LaHf2Al3O12 (CLHAO) green phosphor with broadband emissions covering the cyan and green regions was successfully designed. The crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics of the as-prepared sample were investigated in detail. Under the excitation of 408 nm, the optimal CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors exhibited a broad emission band in the range of 450–700 nm with a peak at 515 nm. Impressively, the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of this sample was determined to be about 116 nm, which was much broader than that of commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphors (FWHM = 67 nm). The internal quantum efficiency of CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors was measured to be 46.5%. Finally, by using a 400 nm LED chip and the commercial CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ red phosphors, the as-prepared CLHAO:0.05Ce3+ green phosphors, as well as the BAM:Eu2+ blue phosphors, a package of white light-emitting diode (LED) device was fabricated. Interestingly, under 60 mA current, the white LED device displayed a smooth emission spectrum, without a spectrum cavity in cyan region. And thus the resulting warm white light possessed a high CRI value (Ra) of 92.0, which was greatly better than that of another white LED device fabricated by using commercial (Ba,Sr)2SiO4:Eu2+ green phosphors as color converter (Ra = 80.6). We anticipate that the work presented here may open up new insights for finding high-performance color-converting phosphors for high-CRI solid-state lighting devices.

Abstract:Using the solid-state reaction method, Ce3+,Tb3+-coactivated Si5AlON7 (Si6-zAlzOzN8-z, z=1) phosphors were successfully synthesized. The obtained phosphors exhibit high absorption and strong excitation bands in the wavelength range of 240-440nm, matching well with the light emitting-diode (LED) chip. The ET from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions in Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ has been studied and demonstrated by the luminescence spectra and decay curves. Moreover, the phosphors show tunable emissions from blue to green by tuning the relative ratio of the Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. Thermal quenching properties of Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ had also been investigated and the quenching temperature is similar to 190 degrees C. These results show that Si5AlON7:Ce3+,Tb3+ could be a promising candidate for a single-phased color-tunable phosphor applied in UV-chip pumped LEDs.
Optical and structural properties of the Fe 3+ -doped Lu 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ garnet phosphor

Abstract:A novel series of Lu 3 Al 5 (cid:1) x Fe x O 12 :Ce 3+ (0.00 # x # 0.45) garnets were obtained by the solid-state reaction method at 1200 (cid:3) C. The obtained materials were characterized by X-ray di ﬀ raction, Rietveld re ﬁ nement, UV-Vis di ﬀ use re ﬂ ectance spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Fe 3+ doping allowed obtaining pure-phase materials at temperatures and times below those reported up to now. On the other hand, the materials reached an improved blue absorption and a tunable emission from green to orange. These optical properties are attributable to a red-shift phenomenon due to an increase of the crystal ﬁ eld splitting in the Ce 3+ energy-levels. Moreover, the obtained phosphors exhibited a high quantum yield (55 – 67%), excellent thermal photoluminescence stability (up to 200 (cid:3) C), and high color conversion, making the obtained phosphors promising candidates for w-LEDs.

Abstract:A green-emitting nitride phosphor Ca1.4Al2.8Si9.2N16:Ce3+, Li+ (CASN:Ce) has been successfully synthesized which is applicable to near-ultraviolet based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and field emission displays (FEDs). The characteristic photoluminescence (PL) properties were studied in detail by PL excitation, emission spectra and time-resolved spectroscopy. CASN:0.10Ce exhibits broad-band green emission centered at ∼525 nm (FWHM ≈ 135 nm) under 395 nm excitation and with excellent thermal stability. The effect of host lattice composition on PL properties was also discussed. The cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra as a function of accelerating voltage and probe current were also studied. Excellent degradation resistance properties with good color stability were obtained by continuous low-voltage electron-beam excitation of the phosphor.

Abstract:Combining rare earth elements with the halide perovskite structure offers valuable insights into designing nonlead (Pb) luminescent materials. However, most of these compositions tend to form zero-dimensional (0D) networks of metal-halide polyhedra, with higher-dimensional (1D, 2D, and 3D) structures receiving relatively less exploration. Herein, we present synthesis and optical properties of Cs3CeCl6·3H2O, characterized by its unique 1D crystal structure. The conduction band minimum of Cs3CeCl6·3H2O becomes less localized as a result of the increased structural dimension, making it possible for the materials to achieve an efficient electrical injection. For both Cs3CeCl6·3H2O single crystals and nanocrystals, we also observed remarkable luminescence with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and exceptional phase stability. Cs3CeCl6·3H2O single crystals demonstrate an X-ray scintillation light yield of 31900 photons/MeV, higher than that of commercial LuAG:Ce (22000 photons/MeV); electrically driven light-emitting diodes fabricated with Cs3CeCl6·3H2O nanocrystals yield the characteristic emission of Ce3+, indicating their potential use in next-generation violet-light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Sr3–z(Alx,Si1–x)O5–xFx:zCe3+ phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The structure and luminescence properties of phosphors with various Al/Si ratios and Ce3+ concentrations were characterized using various methods such as X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence excitation and photoluminescence spectra. XRD result displayed that a complete solid solution between Sr3AlO4F and Sr3SiO5 was formed. With the increasing of x value, a broader excitation band and stronger absorption appeared in the blue light region. Moreover, the emission band shifted to a shorter wavelength and the emission intensity reached a maximum at x=0.6. By adjusting the concentration of Ce3+, a widely tunable range of emission wavelength under the excitation of 460 nm was obtained from the green to yellow regions. In addition, the concentration and thermal quenching were also discussed.

Abstract:Exploring efficient, energy-saving and environmentally-friendly phosphors is the direction of solid-state white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). In this paper, a novel highly efficient green-emitting Ce3+-activated Ca2LuScAl2Si2O12 (abbreviated as CLSAS:Ce3+) garnet phosphor with high quantum efficiency and good thermal stability is reported. These garnet phosphor samples doped with different Ce3+ ions concentrations have been synthesized by using a high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure and Ce3+ concentration-dependent luminescence properties have been systematically studied. The as-prepared CLSAS:Ce3+ garnet phosphors exhibit broadband absorption in the spectral range of 250-510 nm with the maximum excitation wavelength around 452 nm, matching well with the emission wavelengths of commercial blue LED chips. Under the excitation of 452 nm, the optimal CLSAS:4%Ce3+ sample exhibits a broadband green emission band (emission peak: 531 nm; bandwidth: 114 nm) with CIE color coordinates of (0.3293, 0.5453) and high luminescence efficiency (internal quantum efficiency: 87.3%; external quantum efficiency: 56.6%). Besides, the CLSAS:4%Ce3+ sample also shows good thermal stability in the temperature range of 303-443 K. Its emission intensity at 423 K can still reach 79% of that at 303 K, and its exhibits outstanding color stability with small color chromaticity shift (ΔE = 1.07 × 10-3) at 423 K. Importantly, the fabricated w-LED device exhibits excellent photoelectric properties (CCT = 4978 K; Ra = 92.4; LE = 69.59 lm W-1). The obtained efficient CLSAS:Ce3+ green phosphors have potential application in high-quality w-LEDs.

Abstract:At present, the rare earth (RE) ions doped phosphors have attracted more and more attention because of their excellent properties. In this paper, a series of novel blue-purple beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2):Ce3+ phosphors were synthesized by a high temperature solid phase method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectrum, energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra were used to investigate the crystal structure, composition and the luminescent properties of the resulting samples. The phosphor shows a strong absorption in the ultraviolet band. Under the excitation of 269 nm, the phosphor emits a strong purple fluorescence ranging from 360 to 520 nm. When Ce3+ doping content is 0.07 mol, the strongest luminescence intensity is reached, and the concentration quenching mechanism is dipole-dipole (d-d) interaction for Ce3+ based on Dexter theory.
