Abstract:The up-conversion and near-infrared emission of the Er3+ in transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing LaF3 nanocrystals have been investigated. The formation of LaF3 nanocrystals in the glass was confirmed by XRD. The up-conversion emission of Er3+ ions in the glass ceramics can be observed to be much stronger than that in the glasses, and the transition mechanism of the up-conversion emission can be ascribed to two photons absorption process. The split near-infrared emission peaks of the Er3+ ions in the glass-ceramics can be observed because the Er3+ ions have entered into crystalline environment of the LaF3 nanocrystals.

Abstract:Er3+-Yb3+ codoped oxy-fluoro-tungstosilicate glasses with infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion luminescence were prepared by melting quenching in air. The effects of Er3+ doping on the optical properties of the samples were measured by means of techniques such as optical absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra. The results showed that intense green and red signals centered at 546 and 665 nm, corresponding to the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ by a multiphoton stepwise phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process, respectively, were simultaneously observed by exciting the samples with a diode laser operating at 980 nm at room temperature. The upconversion process was found very sensitive to Er3+ content at a constant Yb2O3 content of 5 mol.%. With the increase of Er3+ content from 0.5% to 1.5%, the upconversion intensity increased gradually. Further increasing of Er3+ content to 3.0% resulted in a significant fluorescence quenching. Moreover, the possible upconversion mechanisms were discussed based on the energy-matching conditions and the quadratic dependence on excitation power.
Near-infrared to visible upconversion in Er 3+ and Yb 3+ codoped Lu 2O 3 nanocrystals: Enhanced red color upconversion and three-photon process in green color upconversion

Abstract:The synthesis and upconversion luminescence properties upon a 980 nm pump of cubic Lu1.88Yb0.1Er0.02O3 nanocrystals with various shapes, e.g., nanorods, nanosheets, and nanoparticles, are studied. It is observed that with decreasing size of the nanocrystals, the relative intensity of the upconverted red emission (Er3+ : F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)) to the green one (Er3+: (H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2)) -> I-4(15/2)) is increased, and a three-photon process involved in the green upconversion, as described by F-4(9/2) (Er) + F-2(5/2) (Yb) -> H-2(9/2) (Er) + F-2(7/2) (Yb), is synchronously enhanced. An analysis based on steady-state rate equations indicates that the results can be induced by a large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate with a small F-4(9/2) -> I-4(9/2) nonradiative relaxation rate. The large I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate is attributed to the occurrence of efficient cross energy transfer to OH- surface group due to the good energy match. As the size of the nanocrystals decreases, the relative surface area is increased, increasing the number of OH- group that can attach to the surface, therefore, enhancing the I-4(11/2) -> I-4(13/2) nonradiative relaxation rate through cross energy transfer to OH- surface group.

Abstract:> Upconversion fluorescence emission of Er3+-doped oxyfluorosilicate glass excited at 975 nm is experimentally investigated. The results reveal that the intense green and red emission, and weak blue emission centered at 525, 543, 655, and 410 nm, respectively. A two-photon upconversion process is assigned to the green and red emission while a three-photon process is responsible for blue upconversion. The possible upconversion mechanisms are discussed based on excited state absorption and energy transfer between excited Er3+ ions. The intense upconversion fluorescence of Er3+-doped lead oxyfluorosilicate glass may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.

Abstract:Electrospun nanobelts were prepared from lanthanum oxybromide doped with trivalent erbium ions (La2O3:Er3+), then up-conversion nanobelts were successfully synthesized from these by bromination with ammonium bromide (NH4Br) powder as bromine source and use of a double-crucible method. The products were characterized in detail by x-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicated the LaOBr:Er3+ nanobelts were tetragonal in structure with the space group P4/nmm. The width and the thickness of LaOBr:Er3+ nanobelts were 3.06 ± 0.42 μm and 290 nm, respectively. On excitation with a 980-nm diode laser, LaOBr:Er3+ the nanobelts emitted strong green and red up-conversion emission centered at 522 nm, 541 nm, and 667 nm. The green and red emission was assigned to the energy level transitions 2H11/2 → 4I15/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2, and 4F9/2 → 4I l5/2 of the erbium ions (Er3+). A mechanism of formation LaOBr:Er3+ up-conversion luminescence nanobelts is proposed. This bromination technique not only results in preservation of the morphology of precursor rare earth oxides, it can also be used to fabricate other pure-phase rare earth oxybromide luminescence nanomaterials at relatively low calcination temperatures.

Abstract:The upconversion properties and mechanism of Er3+ ions have been studied for lead oxyfluorosilicate glasses containing Er2O3 concentrations from 0.2 to 2mol%. Under 975nm excitation, four emission bands centered at 411, 525, 543, and 655nm corresponding to the 2H9/2→4I15/2, 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2, and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The bright green and red emissions are due to a two-photon upconversion process while the weak blue emission is determined by a three-photon upconversion process. Raman spectrum indicates that fluoride ions in the formation of glass network have important influence on upconversion luminescence of Er3+ in lead oxyfluorosilicate glasses. The intense upconversion luminescence of Er3+-doped lead oxyfluorosilicate glasses may be a potentially useful material for developing upconversion optical devices.
Fabrication of Er3+-Doped Laocl Nanostructures with Upconversion and Near-Infrared Luminescence Performances

Abstract:LaOCl:Er3+ nanofibers and nanobelts were prepared by electrospinning combined with a double-crucible chlorination technique using NH4Cl powders as chlorinating agent. X-ray powder diffraction analysis indicated that LaOCl:Er3+ nanostructures were tetragonal with space group P4/nmm. Scanning electron microscope analysis and histograms revealed that diameter of LaOCl:Er3+ nanofibers and the width of nanobelts respectively were 161.15 ± 18.11 nm and 6.11 ± 0.19 μm under the 95 % confidence level, and the thickness of nanobelts was 116 nm. Up-conversion (UC) emission spectra analysis manifested that LaOCl:Er3+ nanostructures exhibited strong green and red UC emission centering at 525, 548 and 671 nm, respectively attributed to 2H11/2 → 4I15/2, 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 and 4F9/2 → 4Il5/2 energy levels transitions of Er3+ ions under the excitation of a 980-nm diode laser. It was found that the relative intensities of green and red emissions vary obviously with the changing of concentration of Er3+ ions, and the optimum molar percentage of Er3+/(La3++Er3+) ions was 5 % in the LaOCl:Er3+ nanostructures. The LaOCl:x %Er3+ nanobelts have higher UC emission (both red and green) intensity than the counterpart nanofibers. Moreover, the near-infrared characteristic emissions of LaOCl:Er3+ nanostructures were achieved under the excitation of a 532-nm laser. Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage analysis demonstrated that color-tuned luminescence can be obtained by changing doping concentration of Er3+ ions, which could be applied in the fields of optical telecommunication and optoelectronic devices. The UC luminescent mechanism of LaOCl:Er3+ nanostructures were also proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Real-time color-tunable upconversion luminescence of lanthanide ions has recently attracted increasing attention. To date, at least two different excitation wavelengths are required to obtain tunable upconversion colors containing the three-primary-color components (Red-Green-Blue). In this work, for the first time, we demonstrate that it is possible achieving tunable three-primary-color upconversion luminescence using a single excitation wavelength, on the basis of the photon-order dependent uponversion nature. A core-shell-shell nanocrystal was synthesized, with rational designed compositions of Er/Yb and Tm/Yb in the core and the outermost shell, respectively, responsible for the green/red and blue emissions. By increasing the power density of the 980 nm continuous-wave excitation laser, the color of the emitted luminescence of the core-shell-shell nanocrystal evolved as green → red → blue, corresponding to 2 → 3 → 4-photons involved in the upconversion process.

Abstract:LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers were synthesized for the first time by calcinating electrospun PVP/[La(NO3)3 + Er(NO3)3 + Yb(NO3)3 + NH4 Br] composites. The morphology and properties of the final products were investigated in detail using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicate that LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers are tetragonal in structure with a space group of P4/nmm. The diameter of LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers is ~ 147 nm. Under the excitation of a 980-nm diode laser, LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers emit strong green and red up-conversion emission centering at 519, 541 and 667 nm, ascribed to the (2)H11/2, (4)S3/2 → (4) I(15/2) and (4)F9/2 → (4)I(15/2) energy-level transitions of Er(3+) ions, respectively. The up-conversion luminescent mechanism of LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers is advanced. Moreover, near-infrared emission of LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers is obtained under the excitation of a 532-nm laser. The formation mechanism of LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers is proposed. LaOBr:Yb(3+)/Er(3+) nanofibers could be important up-conversion luminescent materials.

Abstract:The upconversion luminescence of Y2O2S: Yb, Er under 1550 nm pumping has been investigated. It presents excellent red emission under 1550 nm excitation with an upconversion brightness of more than twice that of Y2O3: Yb, Er under 980 nm excitation. Upconversion luminescence spectrum shows that the strongest NIR peak is situated at 1020 nm, the second strong peak is red emission centred at 690 nm, and the third strong peak is a green band. The red/green fluorescence branching ratio dramatically decreases with an increase in the Er3+ ion concentration or 1550 nm excitation power. Y2O2S: Yb, Er presents green upconversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation. Therefore, red and green two-tone upconversion colour can be created by 1550 and 980 nm excitation, respectively. Moreover, a very wide range of emission colour can be continuously tuned by the joint contribution of altered composition and excitation power. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Erbium-doped ytterbium fluoride compounds with different crystal phases and morphologies have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal route assisted with EDTA. Tunable upconversion emissions can be obtained by replacing Na+ with Li+ in NaYbF4 microcrystals. An interesting blue shift is observed and a mechanism based on a weakened polarization effect is proposed.

Abstract:Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Na 5 Lu 9 F 32 single crystals with different concentrations of Yb 3+ ions were prepared to investigate their phase structure, up-conversion (UC) properties and mechanism of UC luminescence by Bridgman method. Under 980 nm near-infrared (NIR) excitation, three sharp UC emission bands topping at green ~525 nm, ~548 nm and red ~669 nm were obtained in Er 3+ /Yb 3+ doped Na 5 Lu 9 F 32 single crystals which are attributing to the transitions of 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 , 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 , respectively. The quadratic dependence of pump power on UC emission indicated that two-photon process is in charge of the transition from excited state of Yb 3+ ions to lower state of Er 3+ ion in Na 5 Lu 9 F 32 single crystals. The long-accepted mechanism for the production of red and green emissions through up-conversion (UC) under 980 nm excitation in Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped materials apply in the Na 5 Lu 9 F 32 host was displayed. The enhancement of the red emission was observed due to a cross-relaxation (CR) process of the form: 4 F 7/2 + 4 I 11/2 → 4 F 9/2 + 4 F 9/2. Furthermore, an ideal yellowish green light performance could be achieved with 1.0 mol% Er 3+ doped certain Yb 3+ concentrations samples, and its external quantum efficiency approached to 6.80% under 5.5 Wcm −2 980 nm excitation which can be applied in developing UC displays for electro-optical devices.

Abstract:For the first time, undoped and Yb3+/Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm) codoped orthorhombic lutetium oxyfluorides have been fabricated via a facile stepwise route involving room temperature co-precipitation and a subsequent thermal decomposition procedure. The phase formation, crystal structure, particle morphologies and up-conversion (UC) luminescence were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, IR, thermal and luminescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the intermediate Lu(CO3)(1-x)(OH)(y)F1+2x-y precursor plays an essential role in the formation of the final metastable LunOn-1Fn+2 Vernier phase. Multicolour up-conversion has been achieved in the Yb3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ codoped samples under near-infrared excitation (lambda = 980 nm) and, notably, the Yb3+/Er3+ codoping yields an almost single-band red emission at about 660 nm. A short Ln(3+)-Ln(3+) distance combined with the multiple doping sites in the low symmetry (C-1 and C-s) host lattice are considered responsible for the effective energy transfer and, therefore, the intense up-conversion emission. The present work, together with previous studies on the UC performance of Vernier phase yttrium oxyfluorides, illustrates that the Vernier phase oxyfluorides are promising up-conversion host materials for lanthanide ions in a variety of applications such as bioprobes and chromatic displays.

Abstract:The Er3+ and Yb3+ co-doped Sc2O3 nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method. The phase structure and up-conversion properties were investigated using XRD, FESEM and up-conversion spectra. The nanoparticles with the size of about 40 rim emitted red and green light. Yb3+ ions are crucial to adjust the intensity proportion of red and green emission as a sensitizer. In Er3+, Yb3+ co-doping samples, the red emissions are much higher than green and the intensity ratio is up to 56.43, while the green to red intensity ratio is 11.21 with Era(3+) single doping, which both show excellent mono-chromaticity. Strong red emissions are attributed to the cross-relaxation energy transfer and energy back-transfer processes. High Yb3+ ions concentrations induce the red up-conversion saturation, resulting in a near linear laser power dependence, and it can be illustrated based on steady-state rate equations. Synthesis and Luminescence Property Research of LaInO 3 : Er 3 + /Yb 3 + Upconversion Materials

Abstract:The novel upconversion (UC) luminescence phosphors Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped LaInO3 were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UC luminescent spectra, as well as the UC emission measurements on sintering temperature and Er3+ concentration were employed to characterize the resulting samples. The optimum synthesis temperature of LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ was 1,400 degrees C, and the optimum Er3+-doping concentration was 2%. Both green (527 nm, 549 nm) and red (665 nm) emission bands were observed in LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ under 980 nm laser excitation, which can be assigned to the characteristic level transition of H-2(11/2)-> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2)-> I-4(15/2) of Er3+, respectively. The dependence of the UC emission on pumping-power indicated that the energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+ in the LaInO3 host is a three-photon process. The possible UC luminescent mechanism in LaInO3: Er3+/Yb3+ was discussed in detail.

Abstract:Lu2O3:Er3+ powders were synthesized by chemical coprecipitation. Ultraviolet, violet and blue upconversion properties of Lu2O3:Er3+ powders as a function of Er3+ concentration were investigated upon 514.5nm laser excitation. The cross relaxation of 2P3/2+4I15/2→2H9/2+4I13/2 was supposed to be responsible for the adjustable spectral distribution of upconversion emissions. Based on spectral, concentration and pump power dependence analyses, the upconversion mechanisms were proposed. Moreover, Stokes luminescent properties of Lu2O3:Er3+ powders were also observed upon 514.5nm laser excitation. These spectra showed the same concentration-dependent characteristics, and the dependence of emission spectra on Er3+ concentration could be well explained with the cross relaxation of 4F7/2+4I11/2→4F9/2+4F9/2.
