Abstract:So-called "delamination destruction" is often observed on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) used for artificial knee components. We reported that the grain boundary becomes the place at which destruction takes place and the addition of D,L-α-Tocopherol (Vitamin E:VE) prevents crack propagation. However, This mechanism was not clarified. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of VE on mechanical properties of UHMWPE using the image correlation method and raman spectroscopy with tensile-testing. The results obtained form image correlation method showed that the sample added VE has both clearly high area strain and low area strain. From the crystallinity measurement by raman spectroscopy, VE added sample and γ-ray irradiated sample had high crystallinity after strained. But on the VE added sample, the domain which has low crystallinity before strained had tendency to be high cystallinity domain after strained. There is the possibility that both VE addition and γ-ray irradiation increase chain mobility but each mechanism is different. We hypothesize that VE addition, which may exist at non-dense molecular chain region such as amorphous phase, increase chain mobility and have effect on improvement in mechanical property.
