Abstract:Oxynitride Li2SrSiON2 was synthesized by introducing N3− into the Li2SrSiO4 lattice, which is suitable for Eu2+ doping. It crystallizes in an trigonal structure with the space group of P3121 (152) and cell parameter a = b = 5.0131(0) A, c = 12.4270(1) A and V = 270.46 A3. Under blue light (450 nm) excitation, the representative sample Li2Sr0.98SiON2:0.02Eu2+ exhibits a bright broad band orange emission peaking at 586 nm with an external quantum efficiency of 52.7%. Its emission intensity at 150 °C remained 78% of that measured at 25 °C. Warm white light-emitting diode 1 (W-LED1) was prepared by combining a blue LED chip and LSSON:0.02Eu2+. High color rendering index (Ra ∼ 90) warm W-LED2 was fabricated by combing a blue light chip, BaSi2O2N2:Eu2+, and Li2Sr0.98SiON2:0.02Eu2+. The chromaticity coordinate and correlated color temperature (CCT) of W-LED2 are (0.3625, 0.3539) and ∼4386 K, respectively. Excellent optical properties allow it to be an attractive orange phosphor for warm W-LEDs.
Luminescence and Energy Transfer of SrMgB6O11:Eu2+,Mn2+for White Light Emitting Diodes

Abstract:The SrMgB6O11 glass samples were synthesized by a solid-state reaction route. Luminescence of SrMgB6O11:Eu2+,Mn2+ shows a broad blue emission band and a red emission band, which originates from Eu2+ occupying the Sr2+ sites and Mn2+ occupying the Mg2+ sites, respectively. The obtained samples exhibit a tunable color emission under an ultraviolet source by adjusting the relative proportion of Eu2+/Mn2+ properly. The energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ in SrMgB6O11 is observed to be very effective. The optimal composition of SrMgB6O11: 0.02Eu(2+), 0.12Mn(2+) generates white light, indicating that the obtained glass would be a good candidate for white light-emitting diodes applications. Abstract:A novel red-emitting oxonitridosilicate phosphors, Sr2SiNzO4−1.5z:Eu2+ (0.7 < z < 1.2), was prepared by solid state reaction in NH3–N2 atmosphere. The crystal structure was determined by Rietveld analysis on powder X-ray data. Sr2SiNzO4−1.5z (0.7 < z < 1.2) crystallizes in an orthorhombic structure with the space group of Pmnb: ba−c (no. 62), and cell parameter a = 5.67366(5) A, b = 7.09777(4) A, c = 9.75112(1) A. Sr2SiNzO4−1.5z:Eu2+ (0.7 < z < 1.2) exhibited broad-band red emission centred at ∼620 nm (FWHM ≈ 95 nm) under blue light irradiation with a high QE value of 78.0% and good thermal stability, its emission intensity remains 87% at 150 °C of that measured at room temperature. The outstanding luminescent properties allow it to be an attractive red luminescent material for white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:Series of Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 red emitting phosphor were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra showed that the phosphors could be efficiently excited by near ultraviolet to blue light from 350 to 470nm to give bright red emission. There were four emission bands peaking at 591, 615, 655, and 700nm, due to the transition of the Eu3+ (5D0→7Fj (j=0, 1,2,3,4)), respectively. After using the 3.5% Li2CO3 as the flux, the sample's emission intensity increased obviously. White LED was obtained by combining blue LED chip (InGaN-based 460nm emitting) with Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 and YAG:Ce3+. As the x has the value of 0.5, the InGaN-based Ca(La0.5Eu0.5)4Si3O13 WLED presented intense white emitting and good color rendering of over 89.

Abstract:A series of nitride solid solutions (Ca1-x,Sr-x)(16)Si17N34:0.03Eu(2+) were successfully synthesized through the conventional solid-state method. The electronic crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics were studied in detail. The excitation in the near-ultraviolet and blue regions of the samples shows a broad band in the 250-550 nm range, which can match well with the n-UV and blue lighting-emitting diode chips. Partial substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+ results in a redshift emission, and the impacts of Sr content on the luminescence were researched in detail. Under 410 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibited tunable red emission from 616 to 653 nm by changing the concentration of Sr2+. Based on the crystal data, the emission can be fitted into three distinguished Gaussian components, which are attributed to the different Eu2+ luminescence centers occupied in three disparate Ca2+ (Sr2+) lattice sites. The temperature quenching property of the phosphor was also investigated, and the good thermal stability of the phosphors was analyzed through the activation energy for thermal quenching. And the obtained CCT values from 2642 to 2817 K are suitable for a warm white light region. All the results indicated that the phosphors have possible application in the warm white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A series of white-light-emitting NaSrPO4:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction and their photoluminescence properties were investigated. The NaSrPO4:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphor system exhibits a broad excitation band in the wavelength range of 250–420nm, which is well-matched with ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting-diode (LED) chips (typically 365nm). As a result of fine-tuning of the emission composition of the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions, warm-white-light emission can be realized in a single host lattice under 365nm excitation. Efficient resonant energy transfer from the Eu2+ to Mn2+ ions has been observed. The energy transfer efficiency and critical distance were calculated. The results indicate that the developed phosphor can be used as a potential candidate for white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of quaternary nitride solid solutions with a general formula of Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ (1 atom%) were synthesized by the carbothermal reduction and nitridation (CRN) method. The XRD patterns confirm the formation of a solid solution of Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ (0 <= x <= 0.5). With an increase in x, the emission spectra shift from 540 nm to 564 nm under n-UV excitation. In addition, the temperature dependence of the PL intensity was investigated. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial (Ba,Sr)(2)SiO4:Eu2+ phosphor. All the results indicate that the solid solution Sr1-xCaxYSi4N7:Eu2+ UV LEDs for solid-state lighting.

Abstract:A novel oxonitridosilicate phosphor host Sr3Si2O4N2 was synthesized in N2/H2 (6%) atmosphere by solid state reaction at high temperature using SrCO3, SiO2, and Si3N4 as starting materials. The crystal structure was determined by a Rietveld analysis on powder X-ray and neutron diffraction data. Sr3Si2O4N2 crystallizes in cubic symmetry with space group Pa3̅, Z = 24, and cell parameter a = 15.6593(1) Å. The structure of Sr3Si2O4N2 is constructed by isolated and highly corrugated 12 rings which are composed of 12 vertex-sharing [SiO2N2] tetrahedra with bridging N and terminal O to form three-dimensional tunnels to accommodate the Sr2+ ions. The calculated band structure shows that Sr3Si2O4N2 is an indirect semiconductor with a band gap ≈ 2.84 eV, which is close to the experimental value ≈ 2.71 eV from linear extrapolation of the diffuse reflection spectrum. Sr3-xSi2O4N2:xEu2+ shows a typical emission band peaking at ∼600 nm under 460 nm excitation, which perfectly matches the emission of blue InGaN light-emitting diodes. For Ce3+/Li+-codoped Sr3Si2O4N2, one excitation band is in the UV range (280–350 nm) and the other in the UV blue range (380–420 nm), which matches emission of near-UV light-emitting diodes. Emission of Sr3–2xSi2O4N2:xCe3+,xLi+ shows a asymmetric broad band peaking at ∼520 nm. Abstract:Yellow-orange oxynitride Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors with the compositions of Ca0.8Si9.2Al2.8O1.2N14.8: xEu2+ (x=0–0.24) were obtained via carbothermal reduction and nitridation method. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with triclinic space group P31c (159) were obtained by XRD refinement as a=b=7.8859(3)Å, c=5.7336(2)Å, V=308.7915(3)Å3, Z=1. The resulting phosphors can absorb light in the range of 300–500nm efficiently and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 500–700nm with maximum intensity at 580–601nm. The chromaticity coordinates of the synthesized Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors can be tailored by simply controlling the activator concentration. All the results show that Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors can be a candidate for warm white LEDs.
Cathodoluminescence Properties of Ba3Si6O9N4:Eu2+ Phosphors

Abstract:Ba3-xSi6O9N4:xEu(2+) (0.03 <= x <= 0.10) phosphors were successfully synthesized by a solid state reaction method. Under electron beam excitation, the cathodoluminescence intensity reached a maximum at x = 0.07. The corresponding emission spectrum peaked at similar to 493 nm (full-width at half maximum approximate to 46 nm) with CIE coordinate of (0.101, 0.418). The results show that Ba2.93Si6O9N4:0.07Eu(2+) phosphor exhibits high brightness, high color purity, and a higher thermal stability compared to the commercial green Topstar, LMS520B phosphor, which indicates that it could be a candidate for field-emission displays (FEDs). Design of Eu2+‐activated broadband orange‐emitting phosphors with excellent luminescent performance for warm WLEDs

Abstract:We report orange‐emitting Sr8La0.5Na0.5Mg1.5(PO4)7:Eu2+ (SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+) and Sr7LaNaMg1.5(PO4)7 :Eu2+ (SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+) phosphors with broad emission bands covering from 450 nm to 800 nm. The phosphors can be excited by n‐UV and blue light efficiently. Their crystal structure, diffuse reflection spectra (DRS), photoluminescence spectra, fluorescence decay curves and thermal stability were investigated systematically. Under the excitation of 365 nm and 400 nm, SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+ and SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+ both exhibit better photoluminescence properties and contain more red emissions than SMPO:Eu2+. CIE coordinates of SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+ and SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+ under 365 nm excitation are (0.460, 0.497) and (0.457, 0.494), respectively. Furthermore, high‐quality warm white light can be generated by fabricating warm WLED devices with 370 nm LED chips, BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ commercial blue phosphor and orange‐emitting SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+ (or SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+) phosphor. The CCT, Ra and color coordinates are 3880 K, 94.05, (0.3895, 0.3922) and 3736 K, 91.73, (0.4005, 0.4078) for the fabricated WLED devices with SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+ and SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+, respectively. The excellent performances indicate that SLNMPO‐0.5:Eu2+ and SLNMPO‐1:Eu2+ have great potential to be attractive candidates in the application of warm WLEDs. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:A series of SryCa1−x−yAlSiN3:xEu2+ (x = 0–0.01, y = 0–0.8) phosphors have been successfully prepared by solid state reaction under atmospheric pressure. All the phosphors exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure similar with CaAlSiN3 structure. It is found that the emission bands for all Ca1−xAlSiN3:xEu2+ phosphors are centered at ~650 nm and fluorescence quenching has been observed along with the increase of Eu2+ concentration in host materials. Through substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+, an expected red emission peak (625 nm) and enhanced luminescent intensity can be achieved. The obtained Sr0.8Ca0.192AlSiN3:0.008Eu2+ phosphor was further used as efficient red component to fabricate white light emitting diodes (LEDs). Under the optimized condition of LED packaging, the white LEDs own the excellent optical properties with luminous efficiency of 90.6 lm/W and an ideal color rendering index (Ra = 82). Furthermore, the color correlated temperature of white LEDs can be simply adjusted through changing the red phosphor concentration and dispensing package saves time.

Abstract:The luminescence of Li2SrSiO4: 0.01Eu, xCe (x=0.0025, 0.005, 0.0075, and 0.01) is studied as a potential ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) phosphor that is capable of converting the ultraviolet emission of a UV-LED into white light with good luminosity. There are broad blue and yellow emissions peaked at 413 and 575nm, respectively. The two emissions come from d–f transitions of Ce3+ and Eu2+, respectively. The emission intensity of Li2SrSiO4: 0.01Eu, xCe reaches its maximum at x=0.0075. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ is demonstrated to be the type of electric dipole–dipole interaction with considerable spectral overlap and nonradiative transition is calculated to dominate. The Commission International de I’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of Ce3+/Eu2+ substituted compounds is also discussed.

Abstract:Eu2+–Mn2+ codoped yellow-emitting Sr9Sc(PO4)7 (SSP) phosphors have been synthesized by solid-state reactions. The synthesis, structure refinement, and luminescence properties of the obtained phosphor were investigated in detail. The obtained phosphor exhibits a strong excitation band between 250 and 450 nm, matching well with the dominant emission band of a near-UV light-emitting-diode (LED) chip. Upon excitation at 365 nm, the Sr9Sc(PO4)7:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphor shows strong yellow emissions centered at 510 and 610 nm. The energy transfer mechanism from Eu2+ to Mn2+ in Sr9Sc(PO4)7:Eu2+, Mn2+ has been studied and demonstrated to be a resonant type through a dipole-quadrupole mechanism based on the decay lifetime data. These results indicate that yellow-emitting Sr9Sc(PO4)7:Eu2+, Mn2+ can serve as a promising candidate for application in white-light LEDs.

Abstract:The crystal structure, photoluminescence properties, thermal stability and corresponding mechanisms of the novel Bi3+, Eu3+-doped La2SrSc2O7 (LSS) phosphors have been measured and analyzed in details. The emission spectrum of LSS: 1.0%Bi3+ phosphor shows a novel green emission centered at 530 nm under 340 nm excitation, which is attributed to the 3P1→1S0 transition of Bi3+ ions. By designing Bi3+→Eu3+energy transfer strategy, luminescence colors of LSS: 1.0%Bi3+, yEu3+ (y = 0–5.0%) phosphors can be tuned from green to orange with increasing Eu3+ concentration, which achieve multiple emission colors in LSS host. The photoluminescence decay curves, average decay lifetimes, energy transfer efficiency and time-resolved emission spectra of LSS: 1.0%Bi3+, yEu3+ (y = 0–5.0%) phosphors prove the existence of energy transfer from Bi3+ to Eu3+. The prototype pc-WLED device with green-emitting LSS: 1.0%Bi3+ possesses high color rendering index (CRI = 96.0) and low correlated color temperature (CCT = 4306 K). These results provide clear evidences that LSS: Bi3+and LSS: 1.0%Bi3+, Eu3+ phosphors would be novel promising green-to-orange tunable phosphor candidates for pc-WLED applications.

Abstract:A series of Sr-rich phase nitride phosphors, Eu 2+ doped Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 , were synthesized by the solid state method under atmospheric pressure condition. It was found that Sr can substitute Ca in the CaAlSiN 3 lattice with the maximum solubility when x≤0.95. Under the excitation of 450 nm, the photoluminescence spectra of Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphors presents a blue-shift from 594 nm to 574 nm with increasing x value. The results indicate that Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 :Eu 0.001 phosphor can be a promising orange phosphor which could replace silicate orange phosphor for white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:A single host phosphor Ca3(SiO3)3:Eu2+, Mn2+ (CSO: Eu2+, Mn2+) with good monodispersity has been synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction combined with precursor, using porous silica as template and raw material. The phase, size and surface morphology of the phosphor were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Luminescence properties were characterized by photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission spectra from room temperature to 480 K. CSO: Eu2+ has strong excitation band in UV region and emits blue light. To compensate for the lack of orange-red emission region and avoid using multiple phosphors, Mn2+ ions are introduced into the Ca2+ sites. The remarkable enhancements of the orange band attributed to an efficient nonradioactive energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+, which has been testified by the photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence decay dynamics. The emitting light of Eu2+, Mn2+ co-doped CSO could be modulated from cool white to warm white by changing the molar ratio of Eu2+ and Mn2+.

Abstract:A novel red-emitting phosphor Li2SrSiO4:Eu3+ was synthesized by gel-combustion method,using the metal nitrates as raw materials,and tetraethoxysilane as silica source.The formation process,structure and luminescence properties of as-synthesized Li2SrSiO4:Eu3+ were investigated by FI-IR,XRD and fluorescence spectrophotometer respectively.The results show that the goal product Li2SrSiO4:Eu3+ can be obtained after the precursor obtained from the combustion of dry gel was calcined at 700℃ for 3h.The as-synthesized sample has hexagonal crystal structure and P3121 space group,and unit cell parameter is a=0.5012nm,c=1.2360nm.The excitation spectrum shows a broad band,and the strongest excitation peak is at 396 nm.The strongest emission peak is at 618 nm,which is ascribed to 5D0→7F2 characteristic transition of Eu3+.When the mole fraction x of doped Eu3+ is in the range of 0.04-0.24,the luminescence intensity of the sample increases gradually with the the increase of Eu3+ concentration.It is interesting that no concentration quenching occurs.The synthesized phosphor can absorb near-UV light around 396nm effectively,so it is a suitable red-emitting phosphor for white light-emitting diodes excited by 350-410nm InGaN chip.
