Abstract:A Li2TiO3 modified LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode material is prepared by a novel coating method of Li2TiO3 nanoparticles. Compared with a coated material prepared by synchronous lithiation, this coated material shows an unchanged LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 bulk structure and a dramatically reduced lithium residue amount on the surface. As a result, the electrochemical performance of this coated material is improved markedly, especially for the cycling stability at an elevated temperature (60 degrees C), at which the capacity retention after 200 cycles at a rate of 1 C is 91.32%. The performance enhancement for this coated material can be mainly contributed to the less formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and a lower degree of structural changes during cycling. Abstract:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology is used to deposit TiO2 coating on the nickel-rich material LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2. The ultrathin and thickness-controlled coating shell serves as a physical barrier which protects the structure of the core and thereby enhances the electrochemical performance of the coated material. Coating shells of TiO2 with different thicknesses corresponding to different ALD cycles are obtained and detected via transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis. A TiO2-coated sample with 138 ALD cycles reveals optimal electrochemical performance in the voltage range of 2.8-4.5 V. After 100 cycles, discharge capacities of 171.36 and 154.69 mA h g(-1) at room (25 degrees C) and elevated (55 degrees C) temperatures are observed, with higher cycle-ability of 90.21% and 73.21%, in comparison with those of 50.13% and 43.97% for pristine samples at the same temperatures. The improvements in electrochemical characterizations are ascribed to the stable structure and interface modified by the high-quality dense, ultrathin and amorphous ALD TiO2 coating layer, which can protect the cathode particles from hydrofluoric acid attack.

Abstract:LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode material has been surface-modified by coating with ultrathin TiO2via atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology to improve the electrochemical performance of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathodes for lithium ion batteries. Within the cut-off voltage of 2.5-4.3 V, the coated sample delivers an initial discharge capacity of 187.7 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 C and with a capacity retention about 85.9% after 100 cycles at 1 C, which provides a significant improvement in terms of discharge capacity and cyclability, as compared with those of the bare one. Such enhanced electrochemical performance of the coated sample is ascribed to its high-quality ultrathin coating of amorphous TiO2, which can protect the active material from HF attack, withstand the dissolution of metal ions in the electrode and favor the lithium diffusion of oxide as proved by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests. TiO2 coating via the ALD process provides a potential approach for battery factories to surface-modify Ni-rich electrode materials so as to realize improvements in electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Al 2 O 3 was successfully coated on LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 cathode material by a heterogeneous nucleation-and-growth process with a core-shell structure for Li-ion battery. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were used to indicate that the crystal structure of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 had no changes and no impurity phase existed after coating. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed differences of surface morphology between coated and uncoated samples. A thin and bright coating layer was visually observed through transmission electron microscope (TEM). It reveals that the thickness of coating layer is 7 nm approximately. Electrochemical measurements were also carried out. Although the initial discharge capacity of the coated sample decreased, the 1-wt.% Al 2 O 3 -coated sample showed improved cycling performance at room temperature (25 °C) and elevated temperature (55 °C). It provided higher capacity retention of 71.7 and 70.1 % for 1C at 25 and 55 °C after 100 cycles, in comparison with 55.3 and 55.8 % for the uncoated sample. Meanwhile, interfacial resistance between active material and electrolyte decreased detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test. These enhancements in electrochemical characterizations are attributed to the improved stability of interface and the coating layer which served as the physical barriers to protect the active material from electrolyte attack.

Abstract:The LiCoO2 particle with TiO2 coating presents improved columbic efficiency, overcharge performance, rate capability and cycling stability at high voltage. To gain deeper insight into the performance improvement mechanism of the TiO2-coated LiCoO2 cathode materials, the first-principles calculation combined with single particle microelectrode technique are employed in this work. The first-principles calculation is firstly used to simulate the bulk structure, electronic properties and lithium ion diffusion of TiO2-coated LiCoO2 at different delithiation states, while the microelectrode technique is used to evaluate the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of TiO2-coated LiCoO2 on a single particle level without interference of binder, conductive agent, and porous structure of the electrode. It has been revealed that from thermodynamics point of view, the improved electrochemical performance of TiO2-coated LiCoO2 can be ascribed to the reduced surface oxygen activity and surface oxygen loss, which should suppress the electrolyte decomposition and layered structure degradation of LiCoO2 at high voltage. From kinetics point of view, the increased Li-slab space and decreased Li ion transfer activation energy barrier facilitate Li ion diffusion in the solid state of LiCoO2 and Li ion transfer across the solid/electrolyte interphase.

Abstract:Ni-rich cathode materials always suffer from serious side reaction and irreversible phase transition leading to capacity fading and thermal instability, which could be improved by surface coating and elemental doping. However, it is difficult and cumbersome to carry on the coating and doping at the same time. Herein, a facile method of bi-functional Ti modification has been employed on LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 to enhance surface and structural stability via heterogeneous layer coating and bulk doping. The mechanism and synergistic effect of Ti modification has been investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM and the half-cell test in details. The existence of Ti occupancy in Ni site of the transition metal layer has been confirmed. Besides, a 22 nm heterogeneous layer has been detected on the particle surface and the composition has been analyzed. Ti bulk doping can reduce the cation mixing degree, and stabilize the lattice due to the pillar effect and charge compensation. Moreover, the heterogeneous coating layer could protect the cathode particles from hydrofluoric acid attack and reduce the decomposition of electrolyte during cycling. With the synergistic effects of heterogeneous layer coating and bulk doping, NCA-T2 exhibits the highest initial capacities of 162.9 and 182.4 mAh.g(-1) at 1C and 0.1C, and the discharge capacity retentions of 1C cycling reach 85.0% after 200 cycles. Abstract:Surface coating of LiNi[Formula: see text]Mn[Formula: see text]Co[Formula: see text]O2 (NMC532) is an effective approach to improve the capacity retention and energy density through increasing cutoff operation voltage. In this work, NMC532 electrodes are directly coated with Ta2O5 via atomic layer deposition (ALD). The 5 cycles ALD-Ta2O5-coated electrodes have the significantly enhanced capacity cyclability. The high-quality amorphous ALD-Ta2O5 layer retards the interfacial reaction between NMC532 and electrolyte, and prevents the dissolution of the active materials, improving the phase stability of the NMC532 materials.
TiO2-coated LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 cathode materials with enhanced cycle performance for Li-ion batteries

Abstract:Ni-rich cathode material is one of the most promising materials for Li-ion batteries in electric vehicles. However, fading capacity, poor cyclic stability and high pH value are still major challenges, which suppress its practical application. In this study, spherical LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 powders with 0.4 wt% TiO2 coating layer were prepared by impregnation–hydrolysis method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that TiO2 is uniformly coated on the surface of LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 particle and slightly embedded into LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 particles. After 100 cycles at 2.0C, 0.4 wt% TiO2-coated LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 electrode delivers much higher discharge capacity retention (77.0%) than the pristine LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 electrode (63.3%). The excellent cycling performance of 0.4 wt% TiO2-coated LiNi0.9Co0.08Al0.02O2 electrode at a high discharge ratio is due to a TiO2 coating layer which can effectively reduce the direct contact between cathode material and electrolyte, suppress the oxidation of electrolyte, improve electrical conductivity of the electrode and increase the stability of the structure.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3> With the increase of current density, TCNC sample clearly exhibits enhanced cycling performance with higher capacity retention, and the capacity retention of TCNC increases by 22% at 2.0 C.

Abstract:A novel method to improve the cycling performance of LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 in lithium-ion batteries by TiO2-coating with an in situ dipping and hydrolyzing method was presented in this work. The microstructure of the TiO2-coated LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 was characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM, and their electrochemical performances were evaluated by EIS and galvonostatic charge–discharge test. SEM and TEM images show that the TiO2 are pasted on the surface of the LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 with nano-size. The XRD patterns indicate that the crystal structure of the TiO2-coated LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 shows no obvious change compares with the bare material. The TiO2-coated LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 possesses improved cycle performance and rate capability. The capacity retention of 1.0wt.% TiO2-coated material is more than 99.0% after 12 cycles at 3.0C while that of the bare sample is only 86.6%. The capacity of coated material at 5.0C remains 66.0% of the capacity at 0.2C, while that of the bare LiCo1/3Ni1/3Mn1/3O2 is only 31.5%.
Surface Coating with Li-Ti-O to Improve the Electrochemical Performance of Ni-rich Cathode Material

Abstract:LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, high energy density and low cost. However, LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 suffers from an aggressive side reaction with electrolyte, resulting in poor cycling performance, large polarization and fast voltage degradation. To overcome these drawbacks, we use an acid coprecipitation method to prepare rod-shaped LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2, and introduce a thin and uniform lithium titanium oxide layer on the surface by a solvothermal method. The 3 mol% lithium titanium oxide-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 exhibits a much higher capacity retention (88.6%) than the pristine material after 100 cycles, and the polarization and voltage degradation of the Ni-rich cathode are largely alleviated. Furthermore, at an elevated temperature of 65 degrees C, the capacity retention of lithium titanium oxide-coated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 is 81.1% after 50 cycles, which is much higher than that of pristine LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (only 52.0%). These results suggest that the surface doping of Ti4+ and the introduction of the lithium titanium oxide layer help to improve the structure stability and mitigate the side reactions on the electrode-electrolyte interface, resulting in good electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 was prepared using a coprecipitation method and modified with Li4Ti5O12. The sample coated with 3wt% Li4Ti5O12 exhibited the best cyclability and mean coulombic efficiency in the voltage range of 2.0–4.75V. These improvements are attributed to the effective Li4Ti5O12 coating layer, which stabilizes the host structure, protects the electrode surface from electrolyte attack, and prevents the formation of a thick passive film on the electrode surface. The initial irreversible capacity loss was eliminated by blending with 10wt% Li4Ti5O12, in the larger potential window of 1.5–4.75V. It was confirmed that the irreversible capacity loss decreased with increasing Li4Ti5O12 content; this is because Li4Ti5O12 offers a larger number of available sites for insertion of extracted lithium.

Abstract:Uniform C-Al2O3 composite coating with homogeneous thickness was adopted to improve the electrochemical properties of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 by the pyrolysis of molecular layer deposited alucone in argon. Compared with LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 coated atomic layer deposited Al2O3, C-Al2O3 coated electrode delivered high discharge capacity, good rate capability and durable cyclic stability, even at elevated temperature. Such enhanced electrochemical performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect between the amorphous Al2O3 and conductive carbon in the dual-functional C-Al2O3 composite coating, resulting in the improved structural stability and electrochemical kinetics of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode. The network of carbon in C-Al2O3 composite coating supplied high electrical conductivity, and lowers the charge transfer resistance on the surface of electrode. Meanwhile, the uniform amorphous Al2O3 with its flexible structure improved the structural stability of cathode and favored the diffusion of Li+ ions.

Abstract:A method to improve the electrochemical performance of Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 for high voltage lithium-ion battery by Co Al2O4 coating was present in this work. The effects of Co Al2O4 coatings on the structure and electrochemical properties of Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 were investigated in detail. The results show that Co Al2O4 forms a thin layer of 8 nm on the surface of Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 without destroying the structure of the core material. The Co Al2O4-coated Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 possesses better rate capability and cycle performance than the uncoated sample. The excellent cycling performance can be obtained even with1%(by mass) Co Al2O4 coating, for example, the capacity retentions at the 100 th cycle increase from 74.4% to 93.7% at room temperature, and 17.7% to 77% at 55 oC, respectively. It was also confirmed that the Co Al2O4 coating could depress Mn ions dissolving into the electrolyte, and could lead to the enhancement in the structural stability and the thermal stability of Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, suggesting that the Co Al2O4 coating is an efficient way to improve the electrochemical performance of Li Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2.

Abstract:Ultrathin ZnO coatings with different thicknesses are successfully deposited onto the layered Li-rich oxide Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 via atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology, followed by annealing in Ar. The influence of ZnO layer on the structural and electrochemical performances of Li12Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 cathode material is systematically investigated. In comparison with the pristine one, the ultrathin ZnO-coated electrodes exhibit the significantly improved discharge capacity and cycleability, particularly the LMNCO@ALD-ZnO-20 sample. The remarkably improved electrochemical performance of the coated sample is ascribed to the homogeneous ZnO coatings with high-quality, which could improve the electrode/electrolyte interface stability and the structural stability at high voltage, suppress the increasing charge transfer resistance during cycling, and favour the Li+ diffusion. Abstract:LiCo0.2Ni0.4Mn0.4O2, as the cathode material for lithium ion batteries, was modified by TiO2-coating. The effect of TiO2-coating on the structure and electrochemical performance of LiCo0.2Ni0.4Mn0.4O2 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. The results suggest that a small amount of TiO2-coating does not change the crystalline structure, but considerably improves the electrochemical performance of LiCo0.2Ni0.4Mn0.4O2 in terms of capacity delivery and cyclability. XPS measurements confirm that the improved electrochemical performance is most possibly attributed to a decrease in interaction between the layered material and non-aqueous electrolyte during the charge-discharge processes.

Abstract:Although there have been many studies on atomic layer deposition of Al2O3 to improve the electrochemical performances of ternary cathode materials, few studies considered the harsh conditions such as high temperature and high voltage at the same time. The Al2O3 coated LiNi0.68Co0.10Mn0.22O2 presents superior cycling stability and rate capability than the pristine at the cut-off voltage of 2.7-4.4 V under room temperature. Furthermore, under the harsh condition at high temperature of 60 degrees C or at high voltage of 2.7-4.8 V, the Al2O3 coated LiNi0.68Co0.10Mn0.22O2 also shows significantly improved performances than the pristine. The superior electrochemical performance of Al2O3 coated LiNi0.68Co0.10Mn0.22O2 could be attributed to the enhanced interfacial stability, the mitigated side reactions with electrolyte and the better maintained lithium ion diffusion kinetics. Manipulating the surface coating chemistry and evaluating the performance under harsh condition provide a useful approach for fast screening of effective surface modification technology, which might significantly advance the development of high energy density cathode materials.
Improving Electrochemical Cycling Stability of Ni‐rich LiNi 0.91 Co 0.06 Al 0.03 O 2 Cathode Materials through H 3 BO 3 and Y 2 O 3 Composite Coating

Abstract:The nickel‐rich LiNi0.91Co0.06Al0.03O2 cathode material has attracted wide attention due to its high energy density and appropriate thermal stability; however, its practical application has been greatly restricted by exorbitant residual LiOH/Li2CO3 and poor cycling performance. In this work, we have reduced the residual LiOH/Li2CO3 by washing the LiNi0.91Co0.06Al0.03O2 fabricated through a high‐temperature solid‐state method and improved the cycling performance with a composite coating process. The results show that the amount of residual LiOH/Li2CO3 in the washed materials is significantly decreased, which is very favorable for the processability of materials. LiNi0.91Co0.06Al0.03O2 with 0.1 wt% composite coating exhibits optimum properties: the discharge capacity reaches 217.4 mAh/g at 0.1 C, the cycling retention still remains at 93.7 % after 100 cycles at 1 C, and the cycling retention of the soft‐packing battery remains as high as 81.7 % after 800 cycles at 1 C. The excellent electrochemical performances are attributed to the synergistic effect of excellent fluidity of H3BO3 and outstanding stability of Y2O3, mitigating the interface reaction between electrolyte and cathode material.

Abstract:LiTiO2 film-coated layered LiNi0.815Co0.15Al0.035O2 (NCA) material was successfully synthesised through in situ hydrolysis-lithiation to improve electrochemical properties. Herein, NCA was synthesised using solid state reaction, coated by hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate and subjected to lithiation process. The optimal molar ratio (LiTiO2: NCA) was found to be 1.0 mol%, and the thickness of LiTiO2 film Coated on the surface of NCA of 18 nm was observed through HRTEM images. Compared with pristine NCA, 1.0 mol% LiTiO2-coated NCA demonstrated better electrochemical performance with larger capacity of 20 mAh g(-1) under 1 C after 100 cycles. Its related capacity retention was 90.8%. The 1.0 mol% LiTiO2-coated sample exhibited high discharge capacity of 157.6 mAh g(-1) at a current rate of 10 C, whereas the pristine sample only presented 145.3 mAh g(-1). The considerably improvement of the rate and cycling properties of the NCA cathode material is achieved using LiTiO2 as a Li+-conductive coating layer. These new findings contribute towards the design of a stable-structured Ni-rich material for lithium-ion batteries.
