Abstract:Exploring stable two-dimensional (2D) crystalline structures of phosphorus with tunable properties is of considerable importance partly due to the novel anisotropic behavior in phosphorene and potential applications in high-performance devices. Here, 21 new 2D phosphorus allotropes with porous structure are reported based on topological modeling method and first-principles calculations. We establish that stable 2D phosphorus crystals can be obtained by topologically assembling selected phosphorus monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer, and hexamer. Nine of reported structures are predicted to be more stable than white phosphorus. Their dynamic and thermal stabilities are confirmed by the calculated vibration spectra and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulation at temperatures up to 1500 K. These phosphorus porous polymorphs have isotropic mechanic properties that are significantly softer than phosphorene. The electronic band structures calculated with the HSE06 method indicate that new structures are semiconductors with band gaps ranging widely from 0.15 to 3.42 eV, which are tuned by the basic units assembled in the network. Of particular importance is that the position of both conduction and valence band edges of some allotropes matches well with the chemical reaction potential of H2/H(+) and O2/H2O, which can be used as element photocatalysts for visible-light-driven water splitting.
Three-Dimensional Covalently Linked Allotropic Structures of Phosphorus

Abstract:The discovery of new phosphorus allotropes has attracted continuous attention over recent decades, partly due to the importance of phosphorus in life and their fantastic structural diversity. Generally, phosphorus allotropes consist of covalently linked substructures, stacked together with van der Waals interactions, and a few phosphorus allotropes possess three-dimensional covalently linked structures only at high pressure. On the basis of first-principles calculations, five new phosphorus allotropes with three-dimensional covalently linked structures are predicted by assembling phosphorus units at ambient pressure, which are energetically more favorable than white phosphorus. Particularly, three of them share the same structures as those of previously reported three-dimensional nitrogen allotropes. These new allotropes are semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.52 to 2.39 eV, and the Young's modulus varies from 39 to 72 GPa. The structural stability of the new phosphorus allotropes are confirmed with a phonon spectrum and Born Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulation at temperatures up to 700 K. Our findings enrich the phosphorus allotrope family with three-dimensional covalently linked pressure and versatile electronic properties.
Phosphorus Pentamers: Floating Nanoflowers form a 2D Network

Abstract:<p>An experimental investigation of a new polymorphic 2D single layer of phosphorus on Ag(111) is presented. The atomically‐resolved scanning tunneling microscopy images show a new 2D material composed of freely‐floating phosphorus pentamers organized into a 2D layer, where the pentamers are aligned in close‐packed rows. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal a semiconducting character with a band gap of 1.20 eV. This work presents the formation at low temperature of a new polymorphic 2D phosphorus layer composed of a floating 2D pentamer structure. The smooth curved terrace edges and a lack of any clear crystallographic orientation with respect to the Ag(111) substrate at room temperature indicates a smooth potential energy surface that is reminiscent of a liquid‐like growth phase. This is confirmed by density functional theory calculations that find a small energy barrier of only 0.17 eV to surface diffusion of the pentamers (see Supporting Information). The formation of extended, homogeneous domains is a key ingredient to opening a new avenue to integrate this new 2D material into electronic devices.</p>

Abstract:Elemental two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibiting intriguing properties have great potential applications in next-generation electronics. However, controlling single-phase synthesis might be challenging due to the existence of various allotropes with comparable stability. Here, low-dimensional phosphorus (P) is used as a prototype for the understanding of the competition among a series of 0D–2D allotropes upon adsorption. With a combination of theoretical calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the formation of P allotropes significantly depends on the bond angle, coordination number, and atomic density. As a result, P atoms tend to form black phosphorene (BP)-like chains and pentamer molecules at low atomic density and 2D buckling blue phosphorene at high density. In particular, a trigonal nanoribbon-like phase is observed with the confinement of the BP-like chains. The comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the elemental allotropes in low dimension could provide fundamental guidance for the construction of polymorphic quantum materials with novel functionalities.

Abstract:We propose previously unknown allotropes of phosphorus carbide (PC) in the stable shape of an atomically thin layer. Different stable geometries, which result from the competition between sp2 bonding found in graphitic C and sp3 bonding found in black P, may be mapped onto 2D tiling patterns that simplify categorizing of the structures. Depending on the category, we identify 2D-PC structures that can be metallic, semi-metallic with an anisotropic Dirac cone, or direct-gap semiconductors with their gap tunable by in-layer strain.

Three Dimensional Graphdiyne Polymers with Tunable Band Gaps

Abstract:Four three-dimensional graphdiyne polymers, namely Tri-C18, Hex-C36, Tri-C54, and Orth-C72, are predicted with first principles calculations. These carbon allotropes are constituted with interlinked sp3-hybridized carbon pillars and sp2-hybridized graphene-like nanoribbons. Graphdiyne polymers are energetically more stable than C60 and graphdiyne, and show lower phase transition energy barriers from AA-graphdiyne than that of graphite–diamond transition. Except for the semimetallic Tri-C18, these polymers show narrow direct (or quasi-direct) band gap of 1.55–1.74eV. The porous structure and the high in-plane Young’s modulus of graphdiyne sheet are inherited by these polymers. Meanwhile, a greatly enhanced Young’s modulus as high as ca. 1TPa along the direction perpendicular to graphdiyne sheet and high hardness are developed in these systems.
A New Phosphorus Allotrope with Direct Band Gap and High Mobility

Abstract:Based on ab initio evolutionary crystal structure search computation, we report a new phase of phosphorus called green phosphorus ({\lambda}-P), which exhibits the direct band gaps ranging from 0.7 to 2.4 eV and the strong anisotropy in optical and transport properties. Free energy calculations show that a single-layer form, termed green phosphorene, is energetically more stable than blue phosphorene and a phase transition from black to green phosphorene can occur at temperatures above 87 K. Due to its buckled structure, green phosphorene can be synthesized on corrugated metal surfaces rather than clean surfaces.

Abstract:Based on the crystal structure prediction, we propose a new allotrope of phosphorene, psi-phosphorene (psi-P), with a porous structure, which is both thermally and dynamically stable in comparison with the previously reported allotropes. Due to its unique atom configuration, psi-P has highly orientation-dependent mechanical properties and excellent flexibility. Calculations using the HSE functional predict that psi-P is semiconducting with an indirect band gap of 1.57 eV and possesses anisotropic transport properties. Particularly, the electron mobility along the x-direction is up to 1.3 x 10(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is comparable with that of black phosphorene. Considering its intrinsic porous structure, the performance of monolayer psi-P as a gas purification membrane was investigated. The calculation demonstrates that psi-P could be used for hydrogen purification from the mixture of CH4, CO2, N-2, CO, and H-2 with high selectivity. Furthermore, combining a suitable band gap with high carrier mobility, a MoSe2/psi-P van der Waals heterojunction is predicted to be a good solar cell material, whose power conversion efficiency is estimated up to 20.26%. Finally, we demonstrated that the Au(110) surface could be a suitable substrate for the synthesis of psi-P.

Abstract:Great efforts are dedicated to studies the synthesis, structure, and properties of carbons and phosphorus. However, as the promising and highly‐focused materials after silicon, the development of carbon and phosphorus allotropes is still undiscussed. Herein, a systematic review, comparison and the possible future perspective of carbon and phosphorus allotropes, is provided based on the classification of different dimensions. As the promising and highly‐focused materials after silicon, carbon, and phosphorus promote the development of nanotechnology due to its allotropes with unique structures and properties. The carbon allotropes of 0D fullerene, 1D carbon nanotube, and 2D graphene stimulate the investigation of structures, synthesis, properties, and further applications of carbon nanomaterials. Analogous to carbon, phosphorus is demonstrated to have a rich phase diagram. 0D phosphorus fullerenes, 1D phosphorus nanotubes and fibrous red phosphorus, and recently 2D black phosphorene and violet phosphorene have unique structures analogous to carbon fullerene, carbon nanotube, and graphene, is developed. The photoelectronic properties and further applications of the phosphorus allotropes as semiconductors, energy storage materials, biomaterials, and sensors are also investigated. Great efforts are dedicated to studies of the synthesis, structure, and properties of carbons and phosphorus. However, there is no systematic review of the structure of phosphorus allotropes compared to carbon allotropes. Herein, the structures along with possible future perspective of carbon and phosphorus allotropes review and compare in this work based on the classification of different dimensions.

New Phosphorene Allotropes Containing Ridges with 2-and 4-Coordination

Abstract:In all of the phosphorus monolayers reported to date, phosphorus is 3-fold coordinated. However, flexible chemistry of phosphorus allows it to have varying coordination number up to 6. Here, we report three new phosphorus monolayers (labeled alpha-P-6, beta-P-6, and 558-P-6) having 2-, 3-, and 4-fold coordination, which can be observed in epitaxial growth where flakes merge forming ridges at the boundaries. On the basis of state-of-the-art theoretical simulations, we show that these three new monolayer allotropes are thermally and dynamically stable, and they have comparable energetic stability with some reported monolayers such as delta-P, gamma-P, and e-P. Because of their special atomic configurations, they exhibit exceptional properties, including extremely high electron mobility, anisotropic Young's moduli, and optical absorbance in visible and ultraviolet regions. These findings can extend the family of phosphorenes with novel properties and potential for applications.
One-Dimensional Pnictogen Allotropes Inside Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes.

Abstract:The discovery of phosphorene, a single layer of black phosphorus, has accelerated the investigation of pnictogen nanomaterials, leading to the recent identification of arsenene and antimonene. These two-dimensional nanomaterials display physical properties superior to those of graphene for some applications. Recently, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been filled with P-4 molecules from the melt and As-4 molecules from the vapor phase. Confined within SWCNTs, polymerization reactions yielded new one-dimensional pnictogen allotropes. Here, we show using high-resolution electron microscopy that such nanostructures can also be observed upon filling SWCNTs from the vapor phase using red phosphorus as the source material. Using larger-diameter SWCNTs, the vapor phase favors the formation of double-stranded phosphorus zigzag ladders observed here for the first time. Overall, however, SWCNTs were generally found to fill more efficiently with liquid phosphorus; substantial decreases in the filling yields were observed for both phosphorus and arsenic filling of narrow SWCNTs using the vapor route. Attempts to extend the pnitogen series using molten antimony gave very low filling yields. However, the antimony zigzag ladder was observed on two occasions, suggesting that this structural motif dominates across the pnictogens. Computational predictions of the encapsulation energies of the various pnictogen nanostructures are consistent with the observed experimental trends, and band gap calculations predict that the single-stranded zigzag chains of all investigated pnictogens are fully metallic. Using SWCNTs with diameters of >1.5 nm revealed a plethora of complex new phosphorus nanostructures, which highlights an exciting new avenue for future work in this area.
A New Two-Dimensional Semiconducting Carbon Allotrope with Direct Band Gap: a First-Principles Prediction

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) carbon materials with an appropriate band gap play important roles in the various electronics fields. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we predict a new 2D carbon allotrope containing 32 atoms, consists of pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal and decagonal rings. This new allotrope is named as Po-C32, which possesses P4/MMM symmetry with a tetragonal lattice and has a vertical distance of 2.22 Å between the uppermost and undermost atoms. The cohesive energy, phonon band structure,ab initiomolecular dynamics simulations and elastic constants fitting confirm Po-C32 has high stabilities. The fitted in-plane Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio alongaandbdirections areYa=Yb= 244 N m-1andva=vb= 0.14, respectively, exhibiting the same mechanical properties alongaandbdirections. Interestingly, Po-C32 is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 2.05 eV, comparable to that of phosphorene, exhibiting great potential in nanoelectronics. Moreover, two stable derivative allotropes are also predicted based on Po-C32. Po-C24-3D is an indirect narrow band gap (1.02 eV) semiconductor, while Po-C32-3D possesses a wider indirect band gap of 3.90 eV, which can be also applied in optoelectronic device.
Theoretical prediction of sandwiched two-dimensional phosphide binary compounds sheets with tunable bandgaps and anisotropic physical properties

Abstract:New allotropes of two-dimensional (2D) GaP and InP binary compounds were predicted from the structural optimization and dynamical stability analysis in the framework of the density functional calculations. These stabilized GaP and InP monolayers possess unique high buckled orthorhombic lattices symmetry with their cohesive energies of ~0.14 and ~0.17 eV/pair lower than those of 2D low buckled honeycomb GaP and InP binary compounds, demonstrating that these newly predicted 2D GaP and InP binary compounds are energetically preferential. More interesting, their energy band gaps are even ~ 0.52 eV (for GaP) and ~1.49 eV (for InP) wider than their bulk counterparts. Such band gaps are also tunable under the strain along armchair/zigzag direction, and the direct/indirect band gap transitions occur under certain strain, providing their promising applications in band gap engineering for nanoscale electronic and optoelectronic devices. A feasible way to synthesize these novel 2D phosphide compounds is also provided in this study.

Phosphorus K4 Crystal: A New Stable Allotrope

Abstract:The intriguing properties of phosphorene motivate scientists to further explore the structures and properties of phosphorus materials. Here, we report a new allotrope named K4 phosphorus composed of three-coordinated phosphorus atoms in non-layered structure which is not only dynamically and mechanically stable, but also possesses thermal stability comparable to that of the orthorhombic black phosphorus (A17). Due to its unique configuration, K4 phosphorus exhibits exceptional properties: it possesses a band gap of 1.54 eV which is much larger than that of black phosphorus (0.30 eV), and it is stiffer than black phosphorus. The band gap of the newly predicted phase can be effectively tuned by appling hydrostastic pressure. In addition, K4 phosphorus exibits a good light absorption in visible and near ultraviolet region. These findings add additional features to the phosphorus family with new potential applications in nanoelectronics and nanomechanics.
Changing the Phosphorus Allotrope from a Square Columnar Structure to a Planar Zigzag Nanoribbon by Increasing the Diameter of Carbon Nanotube Nanoreactors

Abstract:Elemental phosphorus nanostructures are notorious for a large number of allotropes, which limits their usefulness as semiconductors. To limit this structural diversity, we synthesize selectively quasi-1D phosphorus nanostructures inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that act both as stable templates and nanoreactors. Whereas zigzag phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably in CNTs with an inner diameter exceeding 1.4 nm, a previously unknown square columnar structure of phosphorus is observed to form inside narrower nanotubes. Our findings are supported by electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy observations as well as ab initio density functional theory calculations. Our computational results suggest that square columnar structures form preferably in CNTs with inner diameter around 1.0 nm, whereas black phosphorus nanoribbons form preferably inside CNTs with 4.1 nm inner diameter, with zigzag nanoribbons energetically favored over armchair nanoribbons. Our theoretical predictions agree with the experimental findings.
A new polymorph of white phosphorus at ambient conditions

Abstract:Phosphorus exists in several different allotropes: white, red, violet and black. For industrial and academic applications, white phosphorus is the most important. So far, three polymorphs of white phosphorus, all consisting of P4 tetrahedra, have been described. Among these, β-P4 crystallizes in the space group P1 and γ-P4 in the space group C2/m. α-P4 forms soft plastic crystals with a proposed structure in the cubic space group I43m with the lattice constant a = 18.51 (3) Å, consisting of 58 rotationally disordered tetrahedra and thus is similar to the structure of α-Mn. Here we present a new polymorph, δ-P4. It crystallizes as a sixfold twin with the cell dimensions a = 18.302 (2), b = 18.302 (2), c = 36.441 (3) Å in the space group P212121 with 29 P4 tetrahedra in the asymmetric unit. The arrangement resembles the structure of α-Mn, but δ-P4 differs from α-P4. DFT calculations show δ-P4 to be metastable at a similar energy level to that of γ-P4.
Two-Dimensional Carbon Allotrope With Strong Electronic Anisotropy

Abstract:Two two-dimensional carbon allotropes comprised of octagons and pentagons are proposed based on the first-principles calculations. The two carbon allotropes, named OPG-L and OPG-Z, are found to have distinct properties. OPG-L is metallic, while OPG-Z is a gapless semimetal. Remarkably, OPG-Z exhibits pronounced electronic anisotropy with highly anisotropic Dirac points at the Fermi level. A tight-binding model is suggested to describe the low-energy quasiparticles, which clarifies the origin of the anisotropic Dirac points. Abstract:Elemental phosphorus in its various allotropes has received tremendous research attention due to its intriguing electronic and structural properties. However, the understanding of the physical phenomena of allotropic modification is still lacking. In this review, the basic principles and importance of theoretical studies are discussed, followed by a summary of recent advances in the first principle study of elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials. Finally, the challenges and potential future research directions for further theoretical and computational development of phosphorus‐based nanomaterials are outlined. Elemental phosphorus in its various allotropes has received tremendous research attention recently due to its intriguing electronic and structural properties. Notably, the application of nanostructured materials to overcome the inherent flaws in bulk materials is promising. However, many challenges need to be addressed before its widespread implementation. Thus, a specific tenet to design novel and robust nanomaterials is a decisive factor in the desired outcome, and the most daunting task before realizing this is solving the Schrödinger equation. First principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations have emerged as an insightful and accurate design tool to investigate the structural, electronic, and possible synthesis scenarios of yet undiscovered materials at atomic levels. In this review, the basic principles and the importance of DFT are discussed, followed by a summary of recent advances in the first principle study of elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials. Elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials and their allotropes have attracted growing interest in the renewable energy community due to their modulable product selectivity. However, the understanding of the physical phenomena of allotropic modification is still lacking. Therefore, the aim is to motivate experimental researchers to conduct DFT studies and experiments to comprehend relevant engineered nanomaterials better. Finally, the challenges and potential future research directions for further theoretical and computational development of phosphorus‐based nanomaterials are outlined.
