Abstract:Elemental two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibiting intriguing properties have great potential applications in next-generation electronics. However, controlling single-phase synthesis might be challenging due to the existence of various allotropes with comparable stability. Here, low-dimensional phosphorus (P) is used as a prototype for the understanding of the competition among a series of 0D–2D allotropes upon adsorption. With a combination of theoretical calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy, we find that the formation of P allotropes significantly depends on the bond angle, coordination number, and atomic density. As a result, P atoms tend to form black phosphorene (BP)-like chains and pentamer molecules at low atomic density and 2D buckling blue phosphorene at high density. In particular, a trigonal nanoribbon-like phase is observed with the confinement of the BP-like chains. The comprehensive understanding of the evolution of the elemental allotropes in low dimension could provide fundamental guidance for the construction of polymorphic quantum materials with novel functionalities.

Abstract:Exploring stable two-dimensional (2D) crystalline structures of phosphorus with tunable properties is of considerable importance partly due to the novel anisotropic behavior in phosphorene and potential applications in high-performance devices. Here, 21 new 2D phosphorus allotropes with porous structure are reported based on topological modeling method and first-principles calculations. We establish that stable 2D phosphorus crystals can be obtained by topologically assembling selected phosphorus monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer, and hexamer. Nine of reported structures are predicted to be more stable than white phosphorus. Their dynamic and thermal stabilities are confirmed by the calculated vibration spectra and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamic simulation at temperatures up to 1500 K. These phosphorus porous polymorphs have isotropic mechanic properties that are significantly softer than phosphorene. The electronic band structures calculated with the HSE06 method indicate that new structures are semiconductors with band gaps ranging widely from 0.15 to 3.42 eV, which are tuned by the basic units assembled in the network. Of particular importance is that the position of both conduction and valence band edges of some allotropes matches well with the chemical reaction potential of H2/H(+) and O2/H2O, which can be used as element photocatalysts for visible-light-driven water splitting.

Abstract:Since the discovery of graphene, two-dimensional (2D) materials have paved a new routine for designing high-performance nanoelectronic devices. To facilitate the device applications, there are three key requirements for a material: sizeable band gap, high carrier mobility and robust environmental stability. However, for the hottest 2D materials studied in recent years, graphene is gapless, transition metal dichalcogenides have low carrier mobility, and black phosphorene is environmentally sensitive. So far, these three characteristics can seldom be satisfied in one single material. Therefore, it becomes a great challenge for finding an ideal 2D material to overcome such a limitation. In this work, we theoretically predict a novel planar 2D material: Penta-Pt2N4, which are designed by the fantastic Cario pentagonal tiling as well as the rare nitrogen double bond. Most significantly, the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 exhibits excellent intrinsic properties, including large direct band gap up to 1.51 eV, high carrier mobility up to 105 cm2V-1s-1, giant Young's module up to 0.70 TPa, and robust dynamic, thermal and chemical stability. Moreover, Penta-Pt2N4 is a global minimal with PtN2 stoichiometry in 2D, so we also propose a CVD/MBE scheme to enable its experimental synthesis. We envision that the 2D Penta-Pt2N4 may find a wide application for future nanoelectronics.

Abstract:Elemental phosphorus in its various allotropes has received tremendous research attention due to its intriguing electronic and structural properties. However, the understanding of the physical phenomena of allotropic modification is still lacking. In this review, the basic principles and importance of theoretical studies are discussed, followed by a summary of recent advances in the first principle study of elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials. Finally, the challenges and potential future research directions for further theoretical and computational development of phosphorus‐based nanomaterials are outlined. Elemental phosphorus in its various allotropes has received tremendous research attention recently due to its intriguing electronic and structural properties. Notably, the application of nanostructured materials to overcome the inherent flaws in bulk materials is promising. However, many challenges need to be addressed before its widespread implementation. Thus, a specific tenet to design novel and robust nanomaterials is a decisive factor in the desired outcome, and the most daunting task before realizing this is solving the Schrödinger equation. First principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations have emerged as an insightful and accurate design tool to investigate the structural, electronic, and possible synthesis scenarios of yet undiscovered materials at atomic levels. In this review, the basic principles and the importance of DFT are discussed, followed by a summary of recent advances in the first principle study of elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials. Elemental phosphorus‐based nanomaterials and their allotropes have attracted growing interest in the renewable energy community due to their modulable product selectivity. However, the understanding of the physical phenomena of allotropic modification is still lacking. Therefore, the aim is to motivate experimental researchers to conduct DFT studies and experiments to comprehend relevant engineered nanomaterials better. Finally, the challenges and potential future research directions for further theoretical and computational development of phosphorus‐based nanomaterials are outlined.

Abstract:Great efforts are dedicated to studies the synthesis, structure, and properties of carbons and phosphorus. However, as the promising and highly‐focused materials after silicon, the development of carbon and phosphorus allotropes is still undiscussed. Herein, a systematic review, comparison and the possible future perspective of carbon and phosphorus allotropes, is provided based on the classification of different dimensions. As the promising and highly‐focused materials after silicon, carbon, and phosphorus promote the development of nanotechnology due to its allotropes with unique structures and properties. The carbon allotropes of 0D fullerene, 1D carbon nanotube, and 2D graphene stimulate the investigation of structures, synthesis, properties, and further applications of carbon nanomaterials. Analogous to carbon, phosphorus is demonstrated to have a rich phase diagram. 0D phosphorus fullerenes, 1D phosphorus nanotubes and fibrous red phosphorus, and recently 2D black phosphorene and violet phosphorene have unique structures analogous to carbon fullerene, carbon nanotube, and graphene, is developed. The photoelectronic properties and further applications of the phosphorus allotropes as semiconductors, energy storage materials, biomaterials, and sensors are also investigated. Great efforts are dedicated to studies of the synthesis, structure, and properties of carbons and phosphorus. However, there is no systematic review of the structure of phosphorus allotropes compared to carbon allotropes. Herein, the structures along with possible future perspective of carbon and phosphorus allotropes review and compare in this work based on the classification of different dimensions.

Abstract:<p>An experimental investigation of a new polymorphic 2D single layer of phosphorus on Ag(111) is presented. The atomically‐resolved scanning tunneling microscopy images show a new 2D material composed of freely‐floating phosphorus pentamers organized into a 2D layer, where the pentamers are aligned in close‐packed rows. The scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements reveal a semiconducting character with a band gap of 1.20 eV. This work presents the formation at low temperature of a new polymorphic 2D phosphorus layer composed of a floating 2D pentamer structure. The smooth curved terrace edges and a lack of any clear crystallographic orientation with respect to the Ag(111) substrate at room temperature indicates a smooth potential energy surface that is reminiscent of a liquid‐like growth phase. This is confirmed by density functional theory calculations that find a small energy barrier of only 0.17 eV to surface diffusion of the pentamers (see Supporting Information). The formation of extended, homogeneous domains is a key ingredient to opening a new avenue to integrate this new 2D material into electronic devices.</p>
