Abstract:Phosphorene, a novel 2D material isolated from bulk black phosphorus (BP), is an intrinsic p-type material with a variable bandgap for a variety of applications. However, these applications are limited by the inability to isolate large films of phosphorene. Here we present an in situ chemical vapor deposition type approach that demonstrates progress towards growth of large area 2D BP with average areas >3 μm2 and thicknesses representing samples around four layers and thicker samples with average areas >100 μm2. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy have confirmed successful growth of 2D BP from red phosphorus.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) was firstly and successfully synthesized in 1914. But it has given a new life after many years until the rediscovery of two-dimensional (2D) BP in 2014, which inspires the craze for studying BP once again. This review begins with the preparation of BP, which is divided into two parts: the preparation of bulk BP and 2D BP. This review highlights its catalytic potential on Oxygen Evolution Reaction no matter the morphology such as bulk BP, 2D BP and atomic doping, compared to that of the precious metals with high price. In addition, BP has excellent performance in sensors due to its special direct band gap and excellent electron mobility. BP owns specific high capacity making it stand out as a bright star as the electrode materials applied in Lithium battery. More importantly, the application restriction of BP is delicately analyzed and some suggestions are put forward. Finally, the outlook including future and development trends and application prospects lying in the road ahead of BP research are simultaneously discussed.

Abstract:Black phosphorus, which is a relatively rare allotrope of phosphorus, was first discovered by Bridgman in 1914. Since the advent of two-dimensional (2D) black phosphorus (which is known as phosphorene due to its resembling graphene sheets) in early 2014, research interest in the arena of black phosphorus was reignited in the scientific and technological communities. Henceforth, a myriad of research studies on this new member of the 2D world have been extensively emerged. Fascinatingly, 2D black phosphorus exhibits a distinctive wrinkled structure with the high hole mobility up to 1000 cm2 V−1 s−1, excellent mechanical properties, tunable band structures, anisotropic thermal, electrical and optical properties, thus leading to its marvelous prospects in device applications. This review firstly introduces the state-of-the-art development, structural properties and preparation routes of black phosphorus. In particular, anisotropy involved in mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, carrier transport as well as optical properties is comprehensively discussed. Apart from discussing the recent progress in black phosphorus which is applied to devices (i.e. field effect transistors and optoelectronic), the review also highlights the bottlenecks encountered by the society and finally casts an invigorating perspective and insightful outlook on the future direction of the next-generation 2D black phosphorus by harnessing its remarkable characteristics for energy production.

Abstract:One hundred years after its first successful synthesis in the bulk form in 1914, black phosphorus (black P) was recently rediscovered from the perspective of a two-dimensional (2D) layered material, attracting tremendous interest from condensed matter physicists, chemists, semiconductor device engineers and material scientists. Similar to graphite and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), black P has a layered structure but with a unique puckered single layer geometry. Because the direct electronic band gap of thin film black P can be varied from 0.3 to around 2 eV, depending on its film thickness, and because of its high carrier mobility and anisotropic in-plane properties, black P is promising for novel applications in nanoelectronics and nanophotonics different from graphene and TMDs. Black P as a nanomaterial has already attracted much attention from researchers within the past year. Here, we offer our opinions on this emerging material with the goal of motivating and inspiring fellow researchers in the 2D materials community and the broad readership of PNAS to discuss and contribute to this exciting new field. We also give our perspectives on future 2D and thin film black P research directions, aiming to assist researchers coming from a variety of disciplines who are desirous of working in this exciting research field.

Abstract:Owing to its high charge-carrier mobility, tunable direct-bandgap and unique in-plane anisotropic structure, black phosphorus (BP), a rising star of post-graphene two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, has been intensively investigated since early 2014. To explore its full potential and push the limits, research into BP-based novel functional nanostructures (i.e., nanomaterials and nanodevices) by means of hybridization, doping, and functionalization is rapidly expanding. Indeed, the cutting-edge developments and applications of BP nanostructures have had a significant impact on a wide range of research areas, including field effect transistors, diodes, photodetectors, biomedicine, sodium-ion batteries, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, memory devices, and more. This tutorial review summarizes the recent advances of BP nanostructures and outlines the future challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Phosphorus is a nonmetal with several allotropes, from the highly reactive white phosphorus to the thermodynamically stable black phosphorus (BP) with a puckered orthorhombic layered structure. The bulk form of BP was first synthesized in 1914, but received little attention until it was rediscovered in 2014 as a member of the new wave of 2D layered nanomaterials. BP can be exfoliated to a single sheet that acts as a semiconductor with a tunable direct band gap, a high carrier mobility at room temperature, and an in-plane anisotropy. The development of BP applications is hampered by surface degradation, thus efforts to achieve effective BP passivation are ongoing, such as its integration in van der Waals heterostructures. BP has been tested as a novel nanomaterial in batteries, transistors, sensors, and photonics. This Review begins with the origin of the BP story, following the path from a bulk material to modern few/single layers. The physical and chemical properties are summarized, and the state-of-the-art of BP applications highlighted.

Abstract:Phosphorene, especially black phosphorus (BP), has attracted considerable attention due to the unique characteristics, such as tunable direct bandgap, high carrier mobility, and strong in-plane anisotropy. Recently, a new modification strategy for black phosphorus has been developed by alloying black phosphorus with the congener element arsenic. The elemental composition tuning of black phosphorus with arsenic can not only maintain its special crystal structure and high anisotropy but also modify its electrical and optical properties for the further applications of multifunctional devices. The achieved two-dimensional (2D) black arsenic-phosphorus materials exhibit outstanding optical, electrical, and photoelectric properties, such as very narrow band gap, anisotropic infrared absorption, and bipolar transfer characteristics, presenting great potential in infrared photodetectors and high-performance field effect transistors (FETs). In this review, we introduce the recent progress made in the synthesis and applications of black arsenic-phosphorus, and provide an outlook and perspectives on the current challenges and future opportunities in this field. We hope that this review can bring new insights and inspirations on the further development of 2D black arsenic-phosphorus based materials and devices.

Abstract:Phosphorus is one of the most abundant elements preserved in earth, constructing with a fraction of ~0.1% of the earth crust. In general, phosphorus has several allotropes. The two most commonly seen allotropes, white and red phosphorus, are widely used in explosives and safety matches. In addition, black phosphorus, though rarely mentioned, is a layered semiconductor and have great potentials in optical and electronic applications. Remarkably, this layered material can be reduced to one single atomic layer in the vertical direction owing to the van der Waals structure, known as phosphorene, where the physical properties can be tremendously different from its bulk counterpart. In this review article, we trace back to the 100 years research history on black phosphorus from the synthesis to material properties, and extend the topic from black phosphorus to phosphorene. The physical and transport properties are highlighted, aiming at further applications in electronic and optoelectronics devices.

Abstract:As a new type of single element direct-bandgap semiconductor, black phosphorus (BP) shows many excellent characteristics due to its unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, which has great potential in the fields of optoelectronics, biology, sensing, information, and so on. In recent years, a series of physical and chemical methods have been developed to modify the surface of 2D BP to inhibit its contact with water and oxygen and improve the stability and physical properties of 2D BP. By doping and coating other materials, the stability of BP applied in the anode of a lithium-ion battery was improved. In this work, the preparation, passivation, and lithium-ion battery applications of two-dimensional black phosphorus are summarized and reviewed. Firstly, a variety of BP preparation methods are summarized. Secondly, starting from the environmental instability of BP, different passivation technologies are compared. Thirdly, the applications of BP in energy storage are introduced, especially the application of BP-based materials in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, based on preparation, surface functionalization, and lithium-ion battery of 2D BP, the current research status and possible future development direction are put forward.

Abstract:Structural engineering is crucial for tuning the properties of artificial materials. As one of the most important two-dimensional (2D) materials, black phosphorus (BP) has been rediscovered in 2014 and attracted tremendous attentions all over the world. It shows great potentials in optoelectronic and integrated photonic applications due to the direct and tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, and intrinsic anisotropy. However, some deficiencies are yet to be settled before its large-scale applications, such as the massive synthesis methods and structure-property relationship. To investigate the influence of structural engineering on the performance of 2D BP-based devices thoroughly, recent studies on deformation, atomic defects, superlattice, alloying, thickness and phase transition are maximality summarized in this review covering from the intrinsic properties to optoelectronic applications. Benefiting from the broad research in this field, challenges and opportunities of 2D BP for advanced integrated photonic applications are also provided, which supplies a useful reference to realize large-scale 2D BP-based all-optical communications in future.

Abstract:<p>2D materials have experienced rapid and explosive development in the past decades. Among them, black phosphorus (BP) is one of the most promising materials on account of its thickness-dependent bandgap, high charge-carrier mobility, in-plane anisotropic structure, and excellent biocompatibility, as well as the broad applications brought by the properties. In view of the electron configuration, the most unique feature of BP is the lone-pair electrons on each P atom. The lone-pair electrons inevitably cause high reactivity of BP, particularly toward water/oxygen, which greatly limits the practical application of BP under ambient conditions. The other side of the coin is that BP can serve as an electron donor to promote the construction of BP-based hybrid materials and/or to boost the performance of BP or BP-based hybrid materials in applications. Here, recent advances in passivation and application of BP by addressing the interaction between the lone-pair electrons of BP and the other materials are discussed, and prospects for future research on BP are also proposed.</p>

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP), a burgeoning class of two-dimensional semiconductors, possesses favorable properties such as large specific surface area, high charge carrier mobility, and thickness-dependent bandgap. In particular, the lone pair electrons of phosphorus atoms are highly reactive, and the structural anisotropy leads to many unique anisotropic physicochemical properties. The electronic structure and properties of BP are sensitive to external fields. In this respect, the surface and interface of BP can be modulated to adjust the optical, mechanical, magnetic, and electrical properties, but the relationship between the surface/interface structure and properties must be well understood to optimize one or more of these properties. In this review, recent progress pertaining to surface and interface control of BP is described. The topics include: (1) intrinsic characteristics of the BP surface and interfaces, (2) strategies to tailor and optimize the BP surface and interface, and (3) challenge and prospective.

Abstract:Abstract Black phosphorus (BP) has increasingly attracted scientific attention since its first applications in biomedicine due to its unique properties and excellent biocompatibility. In particular, its layer‐dependent bandgap, moderate carrier mobility, large surface‐area‐to‐volume ratio, biodegradability, intrinsic photoacoustic properties, and biocompatibility make it an ideal candidate for use in photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, drug delivery, 3D printing, bioimaging, biosensing, and theranostics, which are reviewed here. In addition, the article discusses strategies to overcome challenges related to surface instability due to chemical degradation, a major obstacle for its application. This review not only provides a comprehensive summary on BP preparation and biomedical applications but also summarizes recent research and future possibilities.

Abstract:<p>Owing to their tunable direct bandgap, high charge carrier mobility, and unique in‐plane anisotropic structure, black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) have emerged as one of the most important candidates among the 2D materials beyond graphene. However, the poor ambient stability of black phosphorus limits its practical application, due to the chemical degradation of phosphorus atoms to phosphorus oxides in the presence of oxygen and/or water. Chemical functionalization is demonstrated as an efficient approach to enhance the ambient stability of BPNSs. Herein, various covalent strategies including radical addition, nitrene addition, nucleophilic substitution, and metal coordination are summarized. In addition, efficient noncovalent functionalization methods such as van der Waals interactions, electrostatic interactions, and cation–π interactions are described in detail. Furthermore, the preparations, characterization, and diverse applications of functionalized BPNSs in various fields are recapped. The challenges faced and future directions for the chemical functionalization of BPNSs are also highlighted.</p>
