Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) is a unique two-dimensional material with excellent conductivity, and a widely tunable bandgap. In recent years, its application in the field of energy has attracted extensive attention, in terms of energy storage, due to its high theoretical specific capacity and excellent conductivity, black phosphorus is widely used as electrode material in battery and supercapacitors, while for energy generating, it has been also used as photocatalyst and electrocatalysts to split water and produce hydrogen. Black phosphorus demonstrates even better stability and catalytic performance through further construction, doping, or heterojunction. This review briefly summarizes the latest research progress of black phosphorus and its composites in energy preparation and storage, as well as ammonia nitrogen fixation, and also looks into the possible development directions in the future.

Abstract:Black phosphorus is a potential candidate material for next-generation energy storage devices and has attracted tremendous interest because of its advantageous structural and electrochemical properties, including its large theoretical capacity, high carrier mobility, and low redox potential. However, its practical applicability has remained low owing to its difficult of preparation, large volume expansion during cycling, and poor electronic conductivity. To this end, there have been significant efforts to improve its synthesis methods and electrochemical performance. A number of black-phosphorus-based composite materials have been developed and investigated. Herein, we provide an up-to-date account of the recent progress made in research on black-phosphorus-based materials for use in rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors. We review the available synthesis methods and basic properties of black phosphorus and discuss its applicability in Li-, Na-, K-, Mg-, Al-ion and Li-S batteries as well as supercapacitors. We also summarize the existing challenges and future opportunities and offer our perspective on the possible directions for future research in this area.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, the design and development of advanced catalysts for efficient energy conversion technologies have undergone extensive study. Black phosphorus (BP) is considered to be one of the most promising catalysts, exhibiting remarkable performance and drawing significant attention, because of its extraordinary physicochemical properties: a unique layered structure, anisotropic structure, tunable direct bandgap, and ultrahigh charge mobility. In this review, the fundamentals of bulk BP, single‐ and few‐layer phosphorene, and BP quantum dots are briefly introduced, along with their crystal structure, optical and electrical properties, stability, and synthetic methods. Furthermore, recent progress toward diverse BP‐based materials for photo‐ and electrocatalysis for renewable energy is summarized, specifically focusing on water splitting, CO 2 conversion, and nitrogen fixation. Finally, the challenges ahead for these BP‐based catalysts are also emphasized, alongside and perspectives on their further development as part of the this fast‐flourishing renewable energy field.

Abstract:The successful isolation of phosphorene (atomic layer thick black phosphorus) in 2014 has currently aroused the interest of 2D material researchers. In this review, first, the fundamentals of phosphorus allotropes, phosphorene, and black phosphorus, are briefly introduced, along with their structures, properties, and synthesis methods. Second, the readers are presented with an overview of their energy applications. Particularly in electrochemical energy storage, the large interlayer spacing (0.53 nm) in phosphorene allows the intercalation/deintercalation of larger ions as compared to its graphene counterpart. Therefore, phosphorene may possess greater potential for high electrochemical performance. In addition, the status of lithium ion batteries as well as secondary sodium ion batteries is reviewed. Next, each application for energy generation, conversion, and storage is described in detail with milestones as well as the challenges. These emerging applications include supercapacitors, photovoltaic devices, water splitting, photocatalytic hydrogenation, oxygen evolution, and thermoelectric generators. Finally the fast‐growing dynamic field of phosphorene research is summarized and perspectives on future possibilities are presented calling on the efforts of chemists, physicists, and material scientists

Abstract:As a rising star in the family of two-dimensional (2D) materials, black phosphorus (BP) has recently attracted tremendous attention all over the world and demonstrated great potential in energy applications owing to its direct and narrow bandgap, high carrier mobility and theoretical capacity, as well as anisotropic structure. However, some critical issues remain to be studied before scalable production of BP for applications, such as preparation methods and performance. To fully explore its penitential applications, investigations based on BP are maximally covering from its intrinsic properties to energy conversion and storage. In this review, the significant advances recently made for the mechanism and application of BP in solar cells, Li/Ka-/Mg-/Na-ion and LiS batteries, supercapacitors, nanogenerators, solar water splitting and oxygen evolution reaction/hydrogen evolution reaction are summarized and discussed. Benefiting from the solid research in this field, the possible improvements and constructive suggestions regarding BP for enhancing its energy applications are provided.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional black phosphorus (2D BP), well known as phosphorene, has triggered tremendous attention since the first discovery in 2014. The unique puckered monolayer structure endows 2D BP intriguing properties, which facilitate its potential applications in various fields, such as catalyst, energy storage, sensor, etc. Owing to the large surface area, good electric conductivity, and high theoretical specific capacity, 2D BP has been widely studied as electrode materials and significantly enhanced the performance of energy storage devices. With the rapid development of energy storage devices based on 2D BP, a timely review on this topic is in demand to further extend the application of 2D BP in energy storage. In this review, recent advances in experimental and theoretical development of 2D BP are presented along with its structures, properties, and synthetic methods. Particularly, their emerging applications in electrochemical energy storage, including Li − /K − /Mg − /Na-ion, Li–S batteries, and supercapacitors, are systematically summarized with milestones as well as the challenges. Benefited from the fast-growing dynamic investigation of 2D BP, some possible improvements and constructive perspectives are provided to guide the design of 2D BP-based energy storage devices with high performance.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) was firstly and successfully synthesized in 1914. But it has given a new life after many years until the rediscovery of two-dimensional (2D) BP in 2014, which inspires the craze for studying BP once again. This review begins with the preparation of BP, which is divided into two parts: the preparation of bulk BP and 2D BP. This review highlights its catalytic potential on Oxygen Evolution Reaction no matter the morphology such as bulk BP, 2D BP and atomic doping, compared to that of the precious metals with high price. In addition, BP has excellent performance in sensors due to its special direct band gap and excellent electron mobility. BP owns specific high capacity making it stand out as a bright star as the electrode materials applied in Lithium battery. More importantly, the application restriction of BP is delicately analyzed and some suggestions are put forward. Finally, the outlook including future and development trends and application prospects lying in the road ahead of BP research are simultaneously discussed.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) as a rising star among 2D materials has attracted attention for a wide range of applications due to its fascinating properties. The key point for the real application of phosphorene depends on its exfoliation technique to produce high‐quality nanosheets. In recent years, tremendous efforts have been made in the preparation and energy storage application of phosphorene and phosphorene‐based hybrid electrodes. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art liquid‐based exfoliation and characterization of phosphorene fabricated by sonication, anodic and cathodic electrochemical exfoliation, and bipolar electrochemical exfoliation in diverse solutions and conditions are discussed. In addition, the electrochemical properties and storage mechanism of phosphorene‐based electrodes for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors are discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of phosphorene nanosheets in terms of exfoliation and energy storage applications are addressed. The emerged 2D black phosphorus has captured attention owing to its distinctive properties. Herein, the state‐of‐the‐art liquid‐based exfoliation of black phosphorus into phosphorene nanosheets via sonication, electrochemical cathodic/anodic exfoliation, and bipolar exfoliation are comprehensively summarized. Moreover, the electrochemical properties of phosphorene‐based electrodes for rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors and the challenges and opportunities for the future endeavor are highlighted.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) is rediscovered as a 2D layered material. Since its first isolation in 2014, 2D BP has triggered tremendous interest in the fields of condensed matter physics, chemistry, and materials science. Given its unique puckered monolayer geometry, 2D BP displays many unprecedented properties and is being explored for use in numerous applications. The flexibility, large surface area, and good electric conductivity of 2D BP make it a promising electrode material for electrochemical energy storage devices (EESDs). Here, the experimental and theoretical progress of 2D BP is presented on the basis of its preparation methods. The structural and physiochemical properties, air instability, passivation, and EESD applications of 2D BP are discussed systemically. Specifically, the latest research findings on utilizing 2D BP in EESDs, such as lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and emerging technologies (lithium-sulfur batteries, magnesium-ion batteries, and sodium-ion batteries), are summarized. On the basis of the current progress, a few personal perspectives on the existing challenges and future research directions in this developing field are provided.

Abstract:As a new type of single element direct-bandgap semiconductor, black phosphorus (BP) shows many excellent characteristics due to its unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, which has great potential in the fields of optoelectronics, biology, sensing, information, and so on. In recent years, a series of physical and chemical methods have been developed to modify the surface of 2D BP to inhibit its contact with water and oxygen and improve the stability and physical properties of 2D BP. By doping and coating other materials, the stability of BP applied in the anode of a lithium-ion battery was improved. In this work, the preparation, passivation, and lithium-ion battery applications of two-dimensional black phosphorus are summarized and reviewed. Firstly, a variety of BP preparation methods are summarized. Secondly, starting from the environmental instability of BP, different passivation technologies are compared. Thirdly, the applications of BP in energy storage are introduced, especially the application of BP-based materials in lithium-ion batteries. Finally, based on preparation, surface functionalization, and lithium-ion battery of 2D BP, the current research status and possible future development direction are put forward.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP), a promising two-dimensional layer material, has attracted increasing attention due to its high carrier mobility, thickness-dependent tunable bandgap, in-plane anisotropy, and other advantageous characteristics. Because of these excellent characteristics, BP has been considered for applications in optics, electronics, optoelectronics, sensors, and energy storage. However, early studies found that BP has high chemical activity due to the lone pair electrons of P atoms on the surface and edges, resulting in rapid degradation under ambient conditions and limiting many applications. Recently, these thorny issues have been alleviated through superior physical and chemical passivation techniques, and passivated BP can be used in various devices under ambient and water conditions with excellent performance over a long period. This review, highlights the critical problems addressed in solving the serious instability of BP in a harsh environment by effective passivation technology. These unique strategies can provide more researchers with a fundamental study of the fascinating properties of BP. Finally, we found that passivated BP not only showed good stability under ambient conditions but also exhibited excellent performance compared with the original BP. Therefore, it is anticipated that this overview can contribute to the application of BP.
Formation of Stable Phosphorus-Carbon Bond for Enhanced Performance in Black Phosphorus Nanoparticle-Graphite Composite Battery Anodes

Abstract:High specific capacity battery electrode materials have attracted great research attention. Phosphorus as a low-cost abundant material has a high theoretical specific capacity of 2596 mAh/g with most of its capacity at the discharge potential range of 0.4-1.2 V, suitable as anodes. Although numerous research progress have shown other high capacity anodes such as Si, Ge, Sn, and SnO2, there are only a few studies on phosphorus anodes despite its high theoretical capacity. Successful applications of phosphorus anodes have been impeded by rapid capacity fading, mainly caused by large volume change (around 300%) upon lithiation and thus loss of electrical contact. Using the conducting allotrope of phosphorus, "black phosphorus" as starting materials, here we fabricated composites of black phosphorus nanopartide-graphite by mechanochemical reaction in a high energy mechanical milling process. This process produces phosphorus-carbon bonds, which are stable during lithium insertion/extraction, maintaining excellent electrical connection between phosphorus and carbon. We demonstrated high initial discharge capacity of 2786 mAh.g(-1) at 0.2 C and an excellent cycle life of 100 cycles with 80% capacity retention. High specific discharge capacities are maintained at fast C rates (2270, 1750, 1500, and 1240 mAh.g(-1) at C/5, 1, 2, and 4.5 C, respectively).

Silicon has shown some promise for replacing graphite because of its exceptional capacity, but the dramatic volume change during lithiation-delithiation processes often leads to failure. Abstract:Black phosphorous (BP) is a novel composite material. Its carrier mobility can reach more than 1000 cm2·V−1·s−1 and has a direct bandgap adjustable from 0.3 to 1.5 eV with thickness, so its photovoltaic performance is good. These properties show great potential for applications in many fields, such as energy storage, sensors, biomedicine, and environmental treatment. With the deepening of research, it is found that the instability of BP under natural environmental conditions and the limitations of its preparation limit its development, while combining with other materials can further optimize its performance, which not only improves the mechanical properties of the material but also gives it new functions. Based on this, this paper summarizes the preparation and optical properties of highly stable metals and their compounds/BP-based nanomaterials in recent years, highlights the progress of their application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and gives an outlook on the challenges and opportunities for the future development of BP in photocatalysis.

Abstract:2D materials have experienced rapid and explosive development in the past decades. Among them, black phosphorus (BP) is one of the most promising materials on account of its thickness-dependent bandgap, high charge-carrier mobility, in-plane anisotropic structure, and excellent biocompatibility, as well as the broad applications brought by the properties. In view of the electron configuration, the most unique feature of BP is the lone-pair electrons on each P atom. The lone-pair electrons inevitably cause high reactivity of BP, particularly toward water/oxygen, which greatly limits the practical application of BP under ambient conditions. The other side of the coin is that BP can serve as an electron donor to promote the construction of BP-based hybrid materials and/or to boost the performance of BP or BP-based hybrid materials in applications. Here, recent advances in passivation and application of BP by addressing the interaction between the lone-pair electrons of BP and the other materials are discussed, and prospects for future research on BP are also proposed.

Abstract:The polymorphism of phosphorus-based materials has garnered much research interest, and the variable chemical bonding structures give rise to a variety of micro and nanostructures. Among the different types of materials containing phosphorus, elemental phosphorus materials (EPMs) constitute the foundation for the synthesis of related compounds. EPMs are experiencing a renaissance in the post-graphene era, thanks to recent advancements in the scaling-down of black phosphorus, amorphous red phosphorus, violet phosphorus, and fibrous phosphorus and consequently, diverse classes of low-dimensional sheets, ribbons, and dots of EPMs with intriguing properties have been produced. The nanostructured EPMs featuring tunable bandgaps, moderate carrier mobility, and excellent optical absorption have shown great potential in energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. It is thus important to have a good understanding of the differences and interrelationships among diverse EPMs, their intrinsic physical and chemical properties, the synthesis of specific structures, and the selection of suitable nanostructures of EPMs for particular applications. In this comprehensive review, we aim to provide an in-depth analysis and discussion of the fundamental physicochemical properties, synthesis, and applications of EPMs in the areas of energy conversion, energy storage, and environmental remediation. Our evaluations are based on recent literature on well-established phosphorus allotropes and theoretical predictions of new EPMs. The objective of this review is to enhance our comprehension of the characteristics of EPMs, keep abreast of recent advances, and provide guidance for future research of EPMs in the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Abstract:Black phosphorus is a two‐dimensional layer material with promising applications due to its many excellent physicochemical properties, including high carrier mobility, ambipolar field effect and unusual in‐plane anisotropy. Currently, BP has been widely used in biomedical engineering, photocatalysis, semiconductor devices, and energy storage electrode materials. However, the unique structure of BP makes it highly chemically active, leading to its easy oxidation and degradation in air, which limits its practical applications. Recently, researchers have proposed a number of initiatives that can address the environmental instability of BP, and the application of these physical and chemical passivation techniques can effectively enhance the environmental stability of BP, including four modification methods: covalent functionalization, non‐covalent functionalization, surface coordination, physical encapsulation and edge passivation. This review highlights the mechanisms of the above modification techniques in addressing the severe instability of BP in different application scenarios, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method. This review can provide guidance for more researchers in studying the marvellous properties of BP and accelerate the practical application of BP in different fields.

However, the applications of BP in photo/electrocatalysis are hampered by the instability as well as low catalysis efficiency. Recently, tremendous efforts have been dedicated toward modulating its intrinsic structure, electronic property, and charge separation for enhanced photo/electrocatalytic performance through structure engineering. Simultaneously, the search for new substitute materials that are BP‐analogous is ongoing. Herein, the latest theoretical and experimental progress made in the structural/surface engineering strategies and advanced applications of BP and BP‐analog materials in relation to photo/electrocatalysis are extensively explored, and a presentation of the future opportunities and challenges of the materials is included at the end.

Abstract:The development of cost-efficient and high-performance electrochemical materials is very important to promote clean energy storage and conversion. Very recently, the phosphorus-rich (P-rich) metal phosphides (MPs) emerge as the cutting-edge materials in energy storage and conversion due to their significant advantages for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), sodium ion batteries (SIBs), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and solar cells (SCs). This review summarizes the up-to-date advances of P rich MPs in energy storage and conversion from typical structures, main synthetic methods and diversified advanced applications. The corresponding electrochemical reaction mechanism, composition/structure designs and desired performance of P-rich MPs are conjointly discussed to deliver an insightful perspective of the theory-composition/structure-performance relationships and reveal the reasons behind the excellent electrochemical performance. At last, several potential challenges and inspiring outlooks are highlighted to serve guidance for the future research and applications of P-rich MPs. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
